Great videos. I find the Angel wing Begonias to be one of the nicest plants, easy to care for, and propagate. It was my first plant as I got the Plant Bug some years ago. I have a suggestion about using Clay pots. It’s very important before using them to soak them thoroughly in a bucket of filtered water until the bubbles stop escaping from the pot. The bubbles show that the pot was dry and the pores of the clay were open. Through soaking the pot, it puts moisture back into the clay which helps the plant absorb the watering and not the pot. Most times if this isn’t done You will notice that the plants soil is always dry. This is because instead of You watering the plant, you are essentially watering the POT!! It’s also important for all your plants to use filtered or rain water. If not you will notice a white residue on the pots. This is calcium and other impurities from the hard water which aren’t beneficial to the plant. Through leaf cutting, stem cuttings, and also by placing a piece of cut leaf on moist soil are all methods to propagate this plant. The Original AWB is a very difficult plant to find and there’s 2 types of this Begonia. One is the Maculata Begonia and it’s a Hybrid of the Angel Wing Begonia. Although both have the typical silver spots, pink or white flowers, and the Angels Wing formed leaves there’s a few noticeable differences. The Maculata leaves are narrower as the broader AWB, and the silver spots are larger. Also the leaf color is different. ThevAWB leafs are a dull green and the Maculats are a darker green. Both enjoy humidity, but the Maculata doesn’t like water and should not be misted. On the other hand the AWB loves to be misted. I believe because the Hybrid was made by combining elements from the original AWB it lacks some of the abilities to fight off root and leaf rot and other illnesses. Try finding an Original AWB and compare the 2. The Original AWB is uncomplicated and beautiful when they Blum. Thanks for the video.

I have a question: I have tried multiple times to proprogate these in water and the stems always turn brown within a couple of days...any tips to remedy this?
Hi Misti It might be the leaf that is chosen. I would suggest a leaf that is mature with no damage to the leaves. Let me know how you go. Thank you for watching and your support. 💖
Hi Michaela, l use Brunnings Horticultural Charcoal and any brand is fine. I buy mine from Bunnings in Australia but can purchase it online at ebay or amazon ❤️
Hi Gem Oh no ! The stem that snapped off l would place it in water to grow new roots, replace the water once a week. Make sure no leaves are in the water just the stem. Place the water propagation in a warm area with bright indirect light to grow roots. If you have any single leaf then you can propagate those in water as well but they will take longer to grow. I hope that helps you save your Begonias! 💖
I just got my maculata 2 days ago and there are few leaves that have problems like they're burned and curly maybe due to intense light or maybe damaged during transportation. What should i do? Any advice pls🙏
Hi Great question. Once the leaves are damaged there is nothing that can be done to reverse the damage. I would not recommend to propagate the damage leaves immediately as it may place the plant under stress as the plant still needs to accumate to your home. I would place it in lots of bright indirect light and let the plant produce new leaves then you can prune the damaged leaves and see if the leaves are worth propagating then. Propagating from leaves takes alot longer then stem propagation. I hope that helps. ❤
I've had a leaf for about two weeks now in soil, it was looking a bit sad and droopy, I watched your video and decided to try water propagation... however I cut at a new spot just a tiny length away from the original cut instead of just placing the already cut stem in water, do you think this will harm it? Have I made a detrimental mistake? It's the only leaf I have from my mom's plant, hoping it will be okay🙌
Hi Annie No, that should work fine. The only thing about leaf propagation it takes a long time for plantlets to sprout when transferring back into soil, its always worth a try. You can also place the cutting it into sphagnum moss or water and perlite to grow stronger roots. Hope that helps ❤
@@PlantNationMinh I will definitely try water and perlite, and see about finding that moss as well. Anything for this little guy to thrive:) thank you so much, and for such a swift reply.
I wish I have thought about propagating when my Begonia Maculata was bushy last year. I was also afraid of trimming and pruning! Beautiful red flowers came out last April. Now, I am only left with 5 long stems with only 1 or 2 leaves at the top of each stem! I do not seem to see any growth for some time and the remaining leaves are hanging on to their life! Don’t know what I could do now or whether I should just cut the whole canes to the soil!
Hi Christine Thank you for watching the video and subscribing to the channel, truly appreciate your support. Good issues. You can propagate via stem cutting. They will grow alot faster then leaf cuttings. l would gradually cut one stem with at least 2 nodes (more roots) and propagate it in water. When you see the mother stem shoot out at least 2 new leaves then more to the next stem. I would not cut all 5 stems at once as this could stress out your plant and it could die. Hope this helps. Let me know how you go. ❤
Many thanks for your prompt reply. I shall try to look at my plant more closely and decide which stem is more suitable for cutting as I have difficulty of finding one with 2 nodes! My plant is in a rather bad shape! Will let you know.
Hi The leaves will grow back on the stem of the original plant. I would not remove all the leaves as the mother plant will not have any leaves to photosynthesis. I would do a stem propagation as they grow alot faster. I would leave about 2-3 leaves on the stem propagation as too many leaves will make the plant focus on maintaining the leaves rather then growing new roots. Hope that helps. ❤
Hi, so I put my plant in water and once it started growing roots I put it in soil but it seemed to dry out so I put it back into water and the roots don't seem to be growing but it is growing new leaves, idk what to do next do you have any advice?
Hi Anahi If the roots are 2-3 inches long its enough for it to grow in soil and make sure the soil is moist. If the cutting it left too long in water then it will be harder to acclimate it into soil. The cutting will end up being a water plant and it will then produce leaves rather then roots. Hope that helps. Happy Begonia Gardening ❤️
Hi, I was wondering if the leaf cutting actually works, since it will have no active node on it, so it will just root and then die after a while. Ive seen people saying that it wont work, only a stem cutting, what do you think?
Hi Thanks for watching the video. Yes the single leaf has produced another leaf. Its winter in Melb so its growing very slowly atm. It takes a good 4 month for the plant to start to grow from a single leaf. however faster if the household is warmer with lots of bright indirect light. ❤
Hi, I don't callous the leaf. I dip it in rooting hormone to give more chance of propagating and reduce risk of end becoming rotten. Happy Begonia Gardening ❤️
I had always heard that a "cane begonia" without a node (just a leaf) would never turn into a full plant. would forever just be a single leaf. Is that not true?
That is false. Cane begonia can grow a plant from leaf cuttings. It would be faster with a node perhaps but you can grow a plant just by laying the leaf on the soil with the veins cracked open a bit and it will grow baby plants from those points. It's very similar to starting Peperomia or Africa Violets from leaf cuttings. No node required.
Hi Donald Thank you for watching the video and your suggestion. I plan to do an updated version of this video with close videos of what lm doing. Happy Begonia Gardening and ❤
Hi Adrian Thanks for watching the video. The time that the roots take to grow depends on the condition the cuttings are placed in. The more bright indirect light and the more warmth and changing the water once a week will promote faster roots. For mine the single leaf cutting took 3month for good size roots to grow. I saw signs of new roots after 6 weeks. If you enjoyed the content and my reply please consider subscribing, truly appreciate your support in growing this channel so l can create more planty content. ❤
@@lowadrian5565 Its worth it tho. If you would like a faster new plant then l would recommended to do a stem propagation with 2 leaves on the stem rather then a single leaf propagation. Decent size roots tend to grow in 2 month as long as its in the right condition. Also stem propagation will root faster and once transferred to soil will grow faster. Hehe l think l just wrote a book as a reply. ❤
@@lowadrian5565 Water propagation does take a long time. I would strongly suggest propagating in long fiber sphagnum moss. It will have roots in about 2 weeks. It is super fast.. I hate water propagation it takes way too long.
I was just gently touching a beautiful new leaf that is about 2.5 inches long and it popped right off the stem and I wanted to cry. Now I'm here to see if I can save the leaf 🥺
@@bendietrees Aww sorry to hear about your begonia leaf. Yes, 2.5 inch is not worth saving. The good news is this plant if given the right conditions can grow quickly. Thanks for watching the video, have an amazing day! ❤

Place the water propagation in a warm area with bright indirect light to grow roots. If you have any single leaf then you can propagate those in water as well but they will take longer to grow. I hope that helps you save your Begonias! 💖
@@PlantNationMinh THANK YOU SO MUCH! You’re a life-saver 🥰🥺
@@gemsantos9607 Your welcome. Keep me updated on how you go. 💚
Thank you so much.

Hi Annie
No, that should work fine.

Hi Christine
Thank you for watching the video and subscribing to the channel, truly appreciate your support.
@@tonyabe88 If there isn't two nodes then one node should be fine as well. Good luck and have fun propagating. ❤
Great, I will go ahead and give it a try! Thanks a lot indeed!
@@tonyabe88 how did it go? Is your plant alive
If I remove all the leaves will they grow back or do I have to actually prune the stem ?

Hi Anahi
If the roots are 2-3 inches long its enough for it to grow in soil and make sure the soil is moist. If the cutting it left too long in water then it will be harder to acclimate it into soil. The cutting will end up being a water plant and it will then produce leaves rather then roots. Hope that helps. Happy Begonia Gardening ❤️
@@PlantNationMinh thank you! I'll give it another try 😁🤞
Hi, I was wondering if the leaf cutting actually works, since it will have no active node on it, so it will just root and then die after a while. Ive seen people saying that it wont work, only a stem cutting, what do you think?
by leaf cutting I mean the one that you showed first in the video
Hi Arthur
Stem will definitely work. I find leaf is hit and miss and takes ages. Only tine can tell if it will sprout plantlets.
Have a great day ! ❤
can i know that single leaf cutting have plantlets now?
Hi Thanks for watching the video. Yes the single leaf has produced another leaf. Its winter in Melb so its growing very slowly atm. It takes a good 4 month for the plant to start to grow from a single leaf. however faster if the household is warmer with lots of bright indirect light. ❤

So you don't have to callus the leaf before putting it in water?
Hi,
I don't callous the leaf. I dip it in rooting hormone to give more chance of propagating and reduce risk of end becoming rotten. Happy Begonia Gardening ❤️

Hi what soil u use?
Hi My soil mixture consists of 60% premium potting mix and 40% perlite. Thank you for watching. 💚
How longe until the roots are ready to Go to soil?
Hi Depends on your home conditions. Mine took about 6-8 weeks for roots for decent roots. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching ❤
I thought cane Cane begonias needed nodes to grow and that you cant propagate from leaf only
This is a great video, but it would be helpful if we could actually see what you're doing. Thanks!
Hi Donald Thank you for watching the video and your suggestion. I plan to do an updated version of this video with close videos of what lm doing. Happy Begonia Gardening and ❤
Can you _really_ grow a whole new plant from just a leaf and half the petiple? Doesn't it need a node?
I didn’t know I could prop with the leaf. I thought it needed a piece of the stem with a node
Happy Begonia Gardening ❤️
Hi, how long does it takes for the root to come out?
Hi Adrian
Thanks for watching the video. The time that the roots take to grow depends on the condition the cuttings are placed in. The more bright indirect light and the more warmth and changing the water once a week will promote faster roots. For mine the single leaf cutting took 3month for good size roots to grow. I saw signs of new roots after 6 weeks. @@PlantNationMinh wow 3 months that's a long wait. Nowonder this plant is so expensive. Thanks for the answer.
Ah ok I guess I may not be able to save it cause it's too new 🥺😰
@@bendietrees Aww sorry to hear about your begonia leaf. Yes, 2.5 inch is not worth saving. The good news is this plant if given the right conditions can grow quickly. Thanks for watching the video, have an amazing day! ❤

This is a stem cutting, not leaf cutting. It is possible to propagate from a leaf ? It torn off accidentally…. Caption may be relabeled?
Thanks for watching and your commenting. The video shows 2 type of propagation leaf and stem propagation. The leaf propagation just takes a lot longer time to grow plantlets compared to stem propagation. ❤
How often do you change the water when propagating?
Hi Elsa l change the water once a week. Thanks for watching the video.❤
