Thank you Julie, You answered all of my questions. I have a 5" tall specimen in my garden, thriving but yes, I do want to propogate. In Hawaii most of us don't know that much about begonias but your video basically shared everything I needed to know. I am going to have poka-dots all over my gardens. Aloha from the Big Island - Hawaii
One thing I have found out in all my years of growing plants and I'm 70 years old now is that the closer than nodes are the better the chance of getting something to root. That first cutting you took is from a newer shoot and sometimes I found that they tend to want to rot rather than root sometimes. So sometimes it's better to take a cutting where the notes for the leaf scars are closer together. Also I found that a more successful taking cuttings during a full moon right before during or right after. It also works when planting seeds. And when is the highest tide at the ocean during the full Moon the Moon does have a pull on water on Earth. So I guess that's why it works there's some things like in patients that I take cuttings from and if it's during a full moon they usually don't wilt if it's not a full moon I need to put a plastic bag over them to help the humidity level so they don't Wilt and die.
My Grandmother swore that planting anything including seeds needed to be done on the NEW MOON. She was a very successful gardener that grew all the vegetables in her garden that way. We all never went hungry. ✌🏻❤
Really good video, it helps when you are comfortable that the presenter is knowledgable about the subject, there are too many videos out there that you question if the presenter is competent . She gave me the confidence to ‘have a go’
Thank you for this video, the best I've seen. Not much information about the subject in UA-cam. Can you please do a separation from the roots versus a cutting from the top of the plant. My Angel Wing Begonia is tall and leggy, not bushy at all. I would love to make it fuller and keep it a little smaller.
What if it's already super leggy, and there are only leaves at the end of the stems. All my stems are about 2' long and half an inch thick with leaves only growing at the last 6" or so..
In case you never found any answer to your question, if your begonia has multiple stems then try cutting a single branch down to the height you want it. Root the cutting and then see if the old branch sprouts new leaves below the cut line. My begonia only had a single stem but has leaves the full 24 inches. Then again it's also been living outside almost year-round. It sits on my deck in full sun a good portion of the day in summer in California. Southern exposure with light and great reflected off the house. There are trees but they don't shade it much. It only comes inside for freezing temps at night or snow. It has been outside for as low as 33 degrees.
Wow! Thanks for the details on leggy begonias. I recently received one, from a friend. Got a section of the plant, with roots & 4 stems. All leggy. Should I try some cane cuts with soil wrap?
Ohh, I figure it out! You have to take a cutting with at least 2 nodes (not just the leaf and a bit of stem) and put it in water..at least one nodr should be in a water, but if its more than even better. Hoped helped someone. 😊
You can actually propagate from just one leaf with the stem cut off (and rooting hormone!) but success rate is lower than the method shown in this video. I’ve have 100% success with this method, but using only one leaf is like 50/50.
You can definitely propagate with even just the leaf! Plant it directly in the soil. If you also have a bit of stem , you can either propagate in water or also burry it in soil , keep it nice and humid.
@@metasymphony Propagating from leaves only work for rex begonias, cane begonias need at least some stem to work, but it's true that you don't need nodes!
This worked for my accidental begonia snowcap cutting from when it fell down my rack 😂It didn't even have a node so I'm really happy. Thanks for this video!
@@julienicole92 yes the begonia. Not all of them yet (cross fingers) Is it too much water or too less water? I can't figure it out. It does gets plenty of light too.
Based on my experience you don't need to do all of the extra work, I just cut mine on top of the node and put it in a water and that's it. I have mine in a vase, some are in a fish bowl with just water in it, been there for a year or so, along with photos plant. I just change the water from time to time sometimes every 2 weeks or longer. I placed it on an island counter top where there's no window and they are still thriving, the photos that I put in the same vase keeps growing longer with new leaves. I'm in Washington zone 8b.
Thank you so much for this video. I have an Angel Wing Begonia I would like to know if I can propagate where there are no leaves and where it is I need to cut I have about three feet and would love to find out if that area can be propagated since it has no leaves on it. Thank you for your help
Say I have a super tall, leggy begonia. Can I snip it like you say to do, but snip the cutting again in half, essentially making two cuttings out of one? My begonia has just gotten away from me and I hate to waste it.
Cool ! So you don’t have to let the cuts heal before you stick em in water ? I am having to repot mine cuz some odd fungus was growing in the soil and I was getting holes in the leaves . Didn’t see bugs . Even under the microscope. Dunno what the holes were all about. But the leaves were looking yellow and ugly anyway. Have you experienced holes in the leaves ? These holes are pinhole sized .
How far back can you prune? I have a begonia that's already grown to be quite leggy and am wondering if it's safe to chop it right back to try and get a more full plant, or if I just have to work with I now have... thanks in advance!
This is an old question but let me just answer it anyway to anyone reading it. I chopped my very long leggy polka dot back to the first two leaves to start over fresh and cut the cutting up into single/double leaf stems too and put them all in a vase under bright indirect light. They rooted super easily (no hormone no plastic bag) and I potted them next to the formerly leggy mother plant. I now have a super nice bushy pot of polka dots. All of them took to the soil and all of them have new leaves coming out.
hi, should I also put this in a bag if I'm using the water method? I have had a cutting in water for about 2 weeks & its growing a little bit of roots but the leaves are getting dry 😳
Thank you for such an awesome video! I have a flamingo queen begonia which needs pruning so this was really helpful. Just wondering about the propogation misting - my begonia doesn't like wet leaves, was there any adverse effect from the water in the bag? TIA!
You should try! Most commercial garden centers propagate using the bag method with all types of begonias. I'm not sure how you would create humidity without misting. I guess you could mist towards the base of the plant instead and try to avoid hitting the leaves
The leaves of my spotted begonia are drying out. It was next to a window with blinds down most of the time of the day to keep the room cool. I am not sure what kind of light it needs. Is a window where the sun goes down better?

drawitoutlady . I wish someone had answered this. I was given an angel wing begonia and it was from an outdoor neglected garden. It has long canes and some leaves on top with just a couple below. I’m very uncertain about pruning it cuz if I cut off the top I’ll be left with a bare cane. But it’s healthy and beautiful. Nice leaves on top. I don’t want to kill it. Hmmmm. What to do
When I repotted my begonia a very old stalk broke, probably 8 years old. I placed it in some water with some trimming I took off the top of other branches. The younger branches took about 6 weeks to root where as the older stalk took about 6 months!!! It lost a few leaves but it’s now thriving and making babies in the soil.
THANKS. I have an Angel Wing begonia as well - there was one particular 'leg' that shot up pretty quickly - this is a simple countertop plant and the one leg was at least 3'. I have them in individual pots right now...just planted. Hoping they take root. Is this a lost cause??
Hi, I have let my begonia get too leggy. I can cut the ends and root them, but I am wondering if the stems in the pot will be viable since there are no leaves as far back as I need to cut. Do I just need to root my ends and let the rest go? Thanks for the help!
Hey Julie! I've already grown roots in water and just potted my cutting. Would you still recommend putting the plant inside of a plastic bag for a humid environment after you pot? Or is that too much? I'm out of town for about 4 days and don't want my new cutting to die.

Hi Julie, great videos! I’ve just found your channel while searching for Angel Wing Begonia care tips. My mom just pruned hers and propagated the clippings to give to me (YAY!). She used the water method so I have the clipping back at my house sitting in water. I don’t have time to get it potted this weekend so I will have to do it next week. Do you have a recommendation for the amount of roots that would be too much or too little for transferring to soil? Thanks!

Hello! So I have inherited a 15 year old angel wing begonia and it hasn’t been pruned for quite some time. There are no leaves very close to the base, and it stands about 4 feet tall, all the leaves being in the top half. Should I prune back down or will that harm it?
My angel wing begonia plants just suddenly started getting giant holes in the leaves and I'm not sure why.. Do you have any tips to prevent this and what may be causing it?
thank you so much for this info! My angel wing begonias are crazy tall (nearly four feet). I will do this today! I am also looking to buy a cutting of the cotton candy , maculata whitie begonia, please advise where to find one. many many thanks
They are crazy expensive right now, which surprised me because they used to be everywhere. I found one on Etsy - it’s a piece about like what she rooted. It cost me $10 and is doing beautiful
Thank you for the video! Someone left me a very sickly looking angel wing begonia on my front porch among my flowers last fall, I knew it was going to die but I vowed to try to get it through to the end of the season, imagine my surprise as I was able to carry it out at the beginning of spring the following year! Now at the end of our first full summer I have repotted him and he has even gifted me with beautiful pink flowers! My question is, some of his arms are quite long and some still have damage from his previous lifestyle....I want to help him, not hurt him, is there a better time of year to prune? And is there a limit to how much you should do? This is the first plant (plastic ones included) that I have not killed - please help me keep him happy and healthy! Many thanks 🧡💛💚

Is there a time of year that is designated for pruning, or does that not matter?
Hello! So I have inherited a 15 year old angel wing begonia and it hasn’t been pruned for quite some time. There are no leaves very close to the base, and it stands about 4 feet tall, all the leaves being in the top half. Should I prune back down or will that harm it?
Yeah I would try pruning it! They are very easy to propagate :)
Great video
Thank you Kathleen!
Long as the leaf has a node it will root :) hope that helps. Dont have to be many leaves just as long as there is one node!
Why do my angel wing begonias have smaller spots than these? Also I have 10 inch pot, how many plants can I put in one pot? I currently have 3.
great video 👍💖
Thanks Ashley :D
My angel wing begonia plants just suddenly started getting giant holes in the leaves and I'm not sure why.. Do you have any tips to prevent this and what may be causing it?
Will the leaves bruise in the baggie?
Thanks for sharing ...
Awesome, thank you so much!!
Which method is usually more successful for propagating?
Can I still start when theres no leaves
thank you so much for this info!
My cutting hasn't grown roots and the leaves are getting crunchy and the edges, what should i do?
Can you do this with alocasia? Both pruning and water propagating?
I'm not sure! I actually don't own alocasia
Thanks for making this video 🤗🤗🦋
No problem! I hope you found it helpful :D
I cut mine anytime i think its needed and haven't noticed any harm. ☺
Do you have a video of the potting mix you use?
I just use regular espoma indoor potting mix :)
