  • In this video, which is part of the wine collecting 101 series, John Jackson, DipWSET aka Attorney Somm, identifies 10 of his favorite wines that cost around $40. These top $40 wines all offer excellent quality for the price, are wines that are consistent year in and year out, and are also excellent cellar defenders.
    Attorney Somm buys each of these wines for his own cellar. These wines are from a variety of different countries and regions and should appeal to a variety of wine tastes and preferences.

    I didn't even finish your review of the Roero Arenis before I bought a bottle online! I know little about the varietal beyond dimly recalling it was a Piedmont white.
    Piedmont wine + your recommendation = smashing the buy button in my shopping cart. Didn't hurt that the price was £16.99 for 2019.
    I can find Kumeu River Estate Chard for around £22 from The Wine Society (2020 - 2019 sold out). Yet another wine where I have had good reviews, and like the Roero Arenis above, at a good price point. Added to my 'wishlist', which we know is a commitment to a future purchase!
    Good to know that the Chard can age. Sad to say with Climate Change, I'll probably be buying more NZ Chard

    What a stellar selection for that price point, John! You cannot beat the 2016 Brunello for $40.00! The Syrah and the other wines sound delightful. I appreciate all these options from different regions of the world. Enjoy your winery visits in Priorat! Well done! Bravo!

    This is a fantastic video for wine enthusiasts. I’m amazed watching you John, wonderful presentation. I’ve actually watched it at least 5 times consecutively because I started taking notes. I have been drinking and trying different wines for many years and it’s always exciting to learn and get exposed to a number of wines by an expert. Outstanding in-depth wine information of each wines. I’m now gonna go look for some of these wines you mentioned at my wine shop and expanding my palate. This is a great, very informative and educational video. 💫 I learned so much. Thanks so much John! Cheers!

    The Little Rascal is my favourite Italian white wine (and probably in my top 5 favourite whites of the world). I have some of the 2020 Giacosa Roero Arneis, which I picked for a song at £21 per bottle ($26.50). I haven't tried them yet, but looking forwards to an excuse to crack open a bottle 😀

    Honorable mention, Lloyd Chardonnay, Carneros, any vintage, always constient. Robert always crafts a homage to big ballistic 80's Chardonnay, but elegant, balanced with a finish that makes it all worth the while.

    Hi Attorney Somm, I also like the Piper. It wasn't until 2014 when I came to appreciate champagne. We won a champagne tasting dinner for 10 at a fundraiser where they sent a rep from Moet Hennesey to our house with 10 hand picked vintage Champagnes from their cellars in France. Dinner was catered and both the food and the wines were out of this world. It was an educational experience where we learned all things champagne and now I'm hooked! P.s., Great video. I will try to find your $40 recommendations and give them a try!

    Nice list. Kumeu is very good value and their Estate wine is more like $25-30. You can buy their single-vineyard wine (e.g. Coddington, multiple vintages) for about $40.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks very much. Completely agree re: Kumeu River! You described my recollection as well, but I did a search before publishing and found that the Village Chardonnay is about $23, the Estate was $35-$39, and the single vineyards were closer to $50 (at least in my market), so I erred on the side of caution (but nevertheless recommended the single vineyard bottlings as well).

    Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay is $30 in Sweden, we have really cheap quality wine here thanks to the state monopoly. I have it on my wish list for when it releases next week =)

    Jaboulet, Thalabert, Crozes Hermitage is one of my favourite northern Rhone reasonably priced wines. I am still drinking the 2012s - excellent. I don't know what, say, the '15s or '16s would retail for in the States. I find St Joseph a bit more variable than C-H.

    Thank you for your detailed and informative videos, they do put one in the mood to enjoy a great bottle of wine and treasure one’s collection.
    Striking to me is the consistent “elephant in the room” aspect, the sure-handed stearing clear of white and red Burgundy wines.
    It feels, as if the most prestigeous (and to me delicious) Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs in the world most of the time somehow do not enter the contest. I would be curious about an attorney’s reasoning here..

      Thanks for watching and the thoughtful comment. A Burgundy video is definitely on my short list. In fact, I started out attempting to write the script for a Burgundy video last week, but ultimately did this instead. I don't taste as much Burgundy and when I do it is much more costly than what I feature in these videos. It will happen though. Perhaps later this summer after I return from Spain.

    What is your favorite wine shop in Dallas? Why is it Pogo's Wine?

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  2 роки тому +1

      Roots & Water Wine Room is probably my favorite. I purchase from them most frequently. A person from Pogo's is in my tasting group and often brings bottles for me to taste blind for my tasting group that are on my WSET exams. But I buy from other places as well, including a store closer to my house as well as online.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  2 роки тому

      Thank you. Yes, unfortunately the pricing structure is so much different there. But these still should be relative values compared to other wines imported into Canada. I remember last time I was in Canada, I tried 1-2 local wines but otherwise stuck to cocktails. I was shocked at the pricing for wines, especially with the restaurant markup.

    • @arnemcradu6499
      @arnemcradu6499 2 роки тому +1

      @@AttorneySomm yes you are right. The concreto which I have had ( a lot) is the same price - around $40. The rest no. Now, British Columbia does now produce some excellent wines - many whites are world class and the reds are getting up there. The whites ( except Chardonnay) are relative bargains but reds ( for the most part) are not. But there are relative bargains in the reds as well if you are in the “ game”.

    Why do all wine channels on youtube lack timestamps and don't list the wines they discuss in the description?

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  2 роки тому

      I keep the box checked for UA-cam to divide into chapters and it does do for many of my videos. That serves the same function as time stamps. I suspect most don’t list the wines in the descriptions because then many would not watch the videos.

    • @MrJustCallMeJames
      @MrJustCallMeJames 2 роки тому

      @@AttorneySomm I tried the chapter function on one of your other videos now and have to say its inferior to the timestamps in description. You have to click more and scroll further to get them and you cant copy the names of the bottles from the chapter titles for some reason. Al thought if they are truly 100% automatic I have to say the timings are great for automated system.
      I have to say I'm stunned if not listing the wines is because they think they will get more views. That is insanely disrespectful to the viewers time. And self admission that the creator thinks they are providing zero value to the viewer in which case they honestly should not upload in the first place.

    • @AttorneySomm
      @AttorneySomm  2 роки тому

      @@MrJustCallMeJames Appreciate your feedback. I saw a video from a YT guru saying not to allow the chapters. I do that because I agree with you and think it’s important.
