In this video, I discuss my favorite wines in the Wine Spectator top 100! ua-cam.com/video/DMPswTLpkTA/v-deo.html
Have fun in Dubai!
@@sanjaypatelmd4669 Thank you kindly! Cheers!
John,
Drinking 92 chateau Margaux with Hatel... Thinking about you.
@@sanjaypatelmd4669 Sounds terrific! Is it showing well? Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
@@AttorneySomm yes sir... It's amazing. I still have good nose... Holding well. I still have few good bottles to share with you when you come to my Lake house in Austin.
HUGE Lopez de Heredia, Brewer Clifton, and all the others you mentioned… nice work. That Emmrich Knoll will show up soon on my channel 😅… Enjoy Dubai
Thanks very much! Greatly appreciated. That is an epic Riesling!
Nice video. Thanks. Have already located several of the wines in local stores, so looking forward to hopefully trying some of them.
Glad to hear it! Hope you enjoy them too. Thank you!
I've been watching your videos. Subscribed. I really like the information you provide. A bit of background on its production, the price, when to drink, a description of the taste profile, and most important, what you like about it. Helps me learn about new wines to try.
Thanks very much for the support and kind feedback! Much appreciated. Very glad the content is useful. 👍🍷
🙏🏻Thank you dear John for these educational videos about wine 🍷 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
My pleasure! Thank you for watching, and the thoughtful comment!
Thank you for video on these great wines. I will be purchasing some of the value selections. I did purchase the Double Diamond 2018 Cab as you recommended, and look forward to enjoying those. I do love the Spanish wines also for their earthiness and value. You must be tasing a lot of wines, so keep up with your recommendations, I really enjoy your presentations.
Thanks very much! Yes, definitely taste through many wines! Very glad that you enjoy the videos. So many outstanding Spanish wines! Many excellent values too. Cheers!
These are my favorite videos. I agree with your selections and will more than likely pursue them over the list as being a top 100 wine affects the value from increased demand.
Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed them. Hope you enjoy the wines as much as I do. 👍🍷
Excellent suggestions again👏
Thank you kindly! Cheers! 👍🍷
Thank you for this stellar video that shows some of the glaring and unacceptable omissions of WS in their latest Top 100 list. There are so many more that should have been included in that list but I understand that coming up with just 100 is extremely tough. So critiques and additional recommendations like these are highly appreciated - especially from the best wine connoisseurs and influencers like you. So thank you for doing this very helpful video. Your evaluation and suggestions are much appreciated, trusted, and relied upon. It’s great that you mentioned Clos des Papes, Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia, Ben Marco Malbec, and Produttori del Barbaresco. And, haha, that pause after the mention of the football player gave me my first LOL of the day. Merci beaucoup et felicitations, John! Santé!
Ha! Glad you enjoyed the long pause and the recommendations! Thanks very much! Definitely some excellent wines in my view. Hope you enjoy your weekend! Santè!
@@AttorneySomm My pleasure! That long pause is, indeed, one of the highlights of this video.😂 Hope you enjoy your weekend, too, John. Santé!
I lived in dubai for 20 years so before you wrote on the screen that you were recording there I was like…. “ I KNOW THAT BACKGROUND!!” 😂 great vid as per always! 💯
Well done! Thanks very much! 👍🍷
In my opinion wines from Spain are so underrated comparing to another Countries in USA!Keep the great content, thanks and cheers🍷
Thanks very much! Completely agree. I visited Priorat and Rioja in June and was extremely impressed! I did videos about each region. Happy to send them to you if you are interested and have not seen them yet. Cheers! 👍🍷
But that keeps the price down so we can enjoy the wine more
@@brucetodd443 A fair point!
yes,i watched them
both!very good, thank you!Hope in future can back to Spain and go to Ribera del Duero,Toro,Rias baixas Albariño and many others!thanks a lot for the great content
@@lcarlos1980 Thank you! Yes, and Jerez as well. That trip is definitely one I want to do and one I have already thought about.
Nice choices ! A lot of under the radar wines ! And great tip do Riesling lovers like me with the Knoll! Cheers !
Thanks very much! Appreciate the kind feedback!
the vina tondonia is such a great value. if you hear where i can buy the gran reserve i would be all over it! this wine is one of the best values on the market. your taste is exquisite! i bought a case of the chateau talbot when the list came out and im aging most of them ! Elegant wine that deserves top 10. the double diamond i cant understand was numero uno!
Thanks very much! The gran reserva is always a bit of a challenge to locate. Try checking wine searcher dot com. You can filter by ship to location to see what is available. Glad you enjoy the Talbot too! 👍🍷
You recommended Lopez Heredia wines in an earlier video. I always have some Lopez Heredia Tondonia at hand ever since. Beautiful wine.
The Bosconia is also worth mentioning as a cheaper alternative. Also sensational.
Thank you! Completely agree with you. Mention Bosconia in my Per Se wine list video. Cheers!
John the Lewin Estate Art series is one of my favourites. Western Australia does really well with the gin gin clone and I am pretty sure that it's a no Malo chardy.
I'll look for the Rioja and the Chateau Laroque... Keep the recommendations coming.....
Thanks very much! Completely agree with you. Even at the low price points there are some nice Chardonnays. Cheers!
Should include the bottles and video times you mention them in the video notes. Thanks for another great video
Thanks for watching and the suggestion! Much appreciated.
I came across your "short" video on breaking out of your wine comfort zone right after completing WSET Level 2 (results pending). Our instructor provided a tasting of a New Zealand Pinot Noir that I, and most of the class, found to be horrible. Ok, "unacceptable" in WSET terms. Yet she told us the wine was actually "outstanding" as it met all the SAT requirements. That experience reinforced the need to look past my personal preferences and try to objectively evaluate each wine on its own merits. - Ed
Thanks, Ed. Appreciate you sharing that experience! It is definitely important to evaluate wines objectively. Hope that your studies are going well!
Excellent list ! I have several of the ones you mention. López Heredia Viña Tondonia, Laroque, and Tour Saint Cristophe. You asked about wines I would include in the WSTop 100. I think the Lilian Ladouys at $22 is a beyond MUST buy. Ch. La Conseillante seems that got the ball out of the park with its 2019 wine which although is $250+ today I had the opportunity to buy at $170 en primeur. Clinet seems to be also in track to be amazing. I have not tried this last 2 wines yet, but it seems all pros are going crazy. Thanks John !
Thank you! Yes those are all excellent! I have mentioned Ladouys in a couple videos lately and agree that is exceptional. 👍🍷
Fully agreed on the R. Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia and will certainly restock! I also felt that Italian wines were given the snub by WS and there were too few of them. Loved the pause after the 90-point footballer wine.. The shade!!
Ha! Thank you. Yes that Lopez is hard to beat! I hardly ever have pauses in my videos so it seems even longer. 😅 Cheers!
@@AttorneySomm Btw is it just me or is your video a day early? I usually look forward to Sunday evenings when your videos drop but was surprised to get a notification yesterday!
@@Docbyday Yes! Did publish a day early. Heading to the airport before my usual publication time today and wanted to be around to respond to the first wave of comments.
Love the Diatom Chardonnay, although 95 and 96 points might be a little high. Maybe more like 93, in my opinion. Still a great value, and I’ve been drinking it for the past 6 months or so.
Also, haven’t opened a bottle yet, but have been excited about Chateau Laroque for a while now (too early to try a 2018?).
Thanks! Yes, Diatom is excellent for the price. If you enjoy Bordeaux when it is younger and have a number of bottles, you may want to give one a try! I’d just give it plenty of air and ideally enjoy with a meal.
Had the Nipozzano in rome great wine for the price 🍷
Thank you! Completely agree. An even better deal in Europe than in the US.
Im happy i bought 2019 Laroque en primeur. Its an outstanding wine and im sure you are right it will be much more expensive.
An excellent decision! Think you will be very pleased. 👍🍷
Could you please list all the wines discussed in the video (and all future videos) in the respective video description? Maybe together with the designated time point where the respective discussion begins in the video?
Thanks! I’ll definitely try to do that. About to travel for 30 hours straight to get home so can’t do it now, but if you send me an email to AttorneySomm@gmail.com I can send you the wines for this video when I have a moment. Cheers!
I have visited first winery tour st Christophe and agree with you 100% though I disagree with Vina tondonia.
Thanks very much! Cheers!
Excellent advice here - thank you! My only criticism is that you didn't list the wines in writing in your notes. Now I have to watch again with pencil and paper in hand before I go shopping!
Thanks very much! Glad it was helpful. I’m still in Dubai so was scrambling to get this one published.
PS, if you send me an email, I can send you the names. AttorneySomm@gmail.com.
@@AttorneySomm No problem - watching again was fun and helped me decide which to search for. I'm probably going to pass on the $100 whites (I mostly drink red wine), but I may have to search out that Diatom and give it a try.
@@Stanvansandt Yes that one is an incredible value! Can’t go wrong.
2010 Vina Tondonia Reserva is amazing. 2009 is also excellent but the edge goes to 2010 for me.
Thank you! Agreed! Enjoy both but prefer the 2010.
Great choices. It would be interesting to see the relationship between the top 100 and fees charged to score the wines along with advertising dollars spent. Not that I’m cynical, at all.
Thank you! Yes I was wondering about that as well. 👍🍷
I have been saying the exact same thing for decades.
@Carl--"Not that I’m cynical". Then you should watch Matthew Horkey.
I’m from the UK. I am going to a party soon and I need an expensive and hood tasting wine. I know nothing about wine. Do you have any recommendations? Please
Sure. Would you like red, white or Champagne? What is the budget?
Red or champagne. It’s for a corporate event. Unlimited budgets
@@Homelessnomad Some of the top reds are not ready to enjoy right away, so I would go with Champagne. Being from the UK, you might go with the Pol Roger "Cuvee Winston Churchill". One of the top Champagnes. Otherwise, Salon or Krug are good choices. Dom Perignon is always well received as well, although I prefer it with more bottle age.
Yes, but Charles Woodson won a Heisman Trophy and you are only an expert in wine! Stay in your lane! A wonderful time of year in Dubai, you missed a dreary week in DFW. Thanks for another great video.
Ha! Yes turned out to be excellent timing. Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🍷
what would you recommend 2 bottles of wine for new years eve i like burgundy and Bordeaux
Do you need to source or are you picking from options in your cellar? Do you enjoy wines older or younger?
@@AttorneySomm I will source more of a drinker than collector
@@mcrayfourd Understood. What is the desired price range?
@@AttorneySomm I think 250 - 300 a bottle range
@@mcrayfourd For the Bordeaux I would try to find a 2009 Pontet Canet. For the Burgundy, I would check for a Domaine Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Champans 1 er
I am not a particular fan of league tables with something so subjective as wine. But here is my two penn'orth anyway: Ardanza 2010 (the '12 is excellent as well); Le Gallet Blanc, 2013, Cote Rotie (one of the best I have drunk); and, for value, 2014 Chateau Beaumont. No idea if any of these make the list but they have given me enormous pleasure lately. I have a couple of bottles of 2018 Prodottori del Barbaresco but decided on the Rizzi, 2018 Barbaresco for this evening. Love Rufina too - great value.
Dubai? Work or pleasure?
Thanks for weighing in! Some excellent wines and compelling values. Here for pleasure mostly and to make sure I don’t lose my airline status. Still wanted to keep the videos going though so did this one while on vacation.
@@AttorneySomm Thanks, John. We will have dinner after the rugby in about an hour (hope the rugby team performs better than the football team did last night against your country but the signs so far are not good) but I have had a sneak taste of the Barbaresco: bursting with red fruits but also laden with tannin - needs food, so will hold off for a while. Rizzi Langhe Nebbiolo, of which I have one '18 and two '19s left is high class, especially for the price. Are you familiar with this producer?
@@AttorneySomm--You should have spent all your time at FIFA-Qatar. With the Alcohol Ban, you could be as miserable as the rest of us, who live vicariously thru your tastings!
@@stevenholt4936 Do not recall trying Rizzi. I’ll have to see if I can locate it in Texas.
@@ronmcmartin4513 Ha! Yes, that would not be my ideal itinerary. 😂 Did enjoy an impromptu rally by rowdy Team Mexico supporters at Heathrow.
FOFURA!!!!!!🥰🥰🥰🍷🍷🍷
Muito obrigado!
As your resident curmudgeon, THIS is what I was looking for. Not because I agree with your choices, but for Contrarian Satisfaction purposes!🤣
Ha! Thank you. Yes, it was quite satisfying. 😂
45 years of lees ageing for the Gosset! That's quite extended indeed.
4 to 5.
@@AttorneySomm Ah! My apologies. I tried to be witty as it appeared you misspoke years for months.
Nice selection anyway. However the focus on points may be deceiving. But then I'm not a reader of wine spectator's.
@@zaphod333
Sorry, just finished the 25-hour trip back from Dubai so I’m a bit off. 😂 I’m not overly preoccupied with points but am confident the wines I discuss would stack up better than many on the WS list.
What were you doing in Dubai?
Still here now. Primarily rest and recreation.
Thanksgiving in Dubai, huh? Sounds saucy! Bet you had some great wine 😉
@@DanForbesAgain Yes! Perfect to maintain status on my preferred airline. 16,000 miles roundtrip. They have a generous allowance for bringing wines in - 4 L per person. Enjoying an 08 Delamotte with caviar I purchased at the mall for a fraction of what it costs in the US. Definitely not roughing it here.
LOL very nice 😉 Mom likes Sauvignon Blanc, so we had a 2020 Massican from Napa and a 2021 Pastou Cote de Sury from Sancerre. I also opened a 2019 Palm Steinberg Riesling Spatlese Trocken from the Mosel and a 2016 Pierre 1er from St. Emilion. All enjoyable!
@@DanForbesAgain Very nice lineup! Well done!
Some fine corrective in your list. That's the nature of lists I suppose. You can't please everybody but it makes me wonder what the panel was and what was their judging criteria. I'm a stuck record I know, but when the omissions are greatest it's always Spanish wine. How many Spanish wines score 90 - 95 from so many people and cost below $50 euros? No other country gets close. I still detect a snobbery when it comes to Spanish wine with a lot in the industry. In fact the term 'Spanish' wine indicates an issue in itself when there is huge variety. Don't get me wrong, I love wine from other countries as well but I think France gets an easy ride if I'm honest and is that justified any more? Spanish wine score of 94 is $25 euros but a French score like that is $125 euros minimum. I have friends that are still snobby about Spanish wine because they think it's common. Should we have to spend 100 pounds/dollars/euros to get excellent wine these days? I don't think so. WT
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Very much agree re the value proposition for Spanish wines. My goal was to include a broad variety here, but easily could have included all Spanish wines. 👍🍷
@@AttorneySomm I appreciate that and there are some good ones on that list that I'll try to get my hands on. I agree that the list should reflect a global variety. 🍷
Those wines aren't overlooked by wine lovers, they are amazing wines. Those are wines overlooked by average consumers who shop by going for recognizable labels (whatever that boils down to in their heads).
Thanks very much for weighing in.
You need to put a list in text
Thank you. I have added the wines that I discussed to the description.
Mostly rated foreign wines,😢
I discuss wines from all over the world in my videos, but also do some focused videos that target certain countries and regions. Which country are you interested in?
