You really do not understand how much I love this video The music, the imagery, the explanations, the hook in the beginning of the video, the speaker’s voice, the little story about the 2D square, and the little part at the end where the speaker says, “Doesn’t that blow your little spherical mind?” I LOVE THIS VIDEO
Actually, u can only see 2 dimensions. Just like a 2D shape can only see a 1D shape and a 1 D shape sees nothing. Only 4 dimensions can see 3D. Just imagine if u could see everything around u at every angle. U cant. But that's how actual 3D is viewed
If a 1 dimension line doesn't make a shadow, a 2 dimension square makes a 1 dimension shadow, a 3 dimension cube makes a 2 dimension shadow, de 4 dimension hypercube must make a 3 dimension shadow
So basically, when a 3D sphere passes through the Flatland (2D plane), a 2D being such as the mentioned square will only see a 1D line changing sizes. But as we 3D beings can see from the top, they are actually 2D circular cross-sections. .. Similarly, if a 4D sphere passes through a 3D world, we 3D beings can only see a 2D circle growing and shrinking, while in actuality it would be 3D cross-sections.
Ok I saw a video on this and it says 2 dimension species can only see thorough 1 dimension 3 dimension species can only see thorough 2 dimension Implying 4th dimension species can see thorough our 3d world This leads to an infinite series (This also implies that we really are seeing the 3d world through 2d but with the help of light and it's perceptions we could figure out what 3d looks like, that sounds crazy)
Yes. But remember, that while the visual plane of the flatlanders is 1d, they still perceive and understand space as 2d, because they can perceive depth as brightness. Similarly, we can also only see in a 2d plane, but we to can easily perceive depth because of our two eyes and our brains.
This summary is incorrect. 3D object visiting 2D plane, you see 2D object changing size. 4D object visiting 3D plane, you see 3D object changing size. So if you see 4D hypersphere in our dimensions, you’ll see a sphere changing size.

When we have reached the temperatures needed to open a wormhole, a new universe is born and we could escape our own universe trough that same wormhole. If we want to survive than we have to escape in hyperspace in the end.

Yeah, like how people cannot describe or explain what "green" is to a person who is color blind to green... Colors and other sensory perceptions are molded by the the "data" the brain processed from the inputs the sensors received from the outside world, I wonder how we, humans, a three dimensional species, can somehow perceive higher dimensions with our three dimensional mind. I am not talking about the hypercubes, or 4-spheres (4 dimensional spheres) that mathematicians (geometrists? Like how "geologists" are from "geology + -ist + -s") have come up with. I think those are more of "approximations" of the 4-D figure, like how we approximate a 3-D figure on a paper...
We can't see a 4th dimension substance same with that a 2D can't see a 3d object. So, we can't say that we are the only living beings in this whole universe.

This is going to sound dramatic, but I'm about to cry from joy. I've wanted to know for months how we would hypothetically visually experience reality if we were shifted to a 2-d universe. I can't believe I'm alive in a time where I have the access to this answer in an "explain like i'm a 10 year old" at my finger tips, on such an incredibly animated video.
"Carbon stars with ancient satellites colonized by sentient fungi. Gas giants inhabited by vast meteorological intelligences. Worlds stretched thin across the membranes where [the] dimensions intersect... Impossible to describe with our limited vocabulary!" -Dr. Breen
This is beautifully done-- from the music to the animation to the narration. I've read Flatland and enjoyed it, but I think any reader can skip the book and watch this instead because it makes much more sense. Thank you!!!
Honestly this is such a massive distortion of the book though. Flatland is actually quite horrifying, but got some reason the educational folk don't want to talk about the oppression, the genocide, the indoctrination, etc. that the book focused so heavily on, and so you only get a fraction of the books content.
I had genuine tears when I stumbled upon this video when i had smoked weed. So beautiful. I had always wanted to know what life would look like if we were confined to a 2D universe. The little characters are so cute and the music is so warm and fuzzy.
This video is not just about dimensions and mathematics, its about a bigger question, in that what is out there? We are very comfortable in our relatively limited way of thinking but if we open our mind to more possibilities, and that the unknown could be known if we are able to look outwards a bit more. Curiosity is not a crime, its the first step to knowledge.
I watched a "scary" movie about a poltergeist, during witch the experts on the matter were talking of the ghosts being lost in another dimension, where there are no straight lines, ect. And then I thought the exact same thing. I think I have a new personal belief. Just think, in higher dimensions, time can actually be represented as a physical space. Knowing that, could our 4d (3 spacial dimensions and time )universe be inside a 5d space, where every moment in time is a physical area? so people who in our 4d universe who have been dead for a long time could still exist in a 5d world, hence why when they pass through our dimension, they look strange? IDK, but I know this rant is what I'll repeat when somebody asks if me if I believe in ghosts.
It is impossible because it would break all the rules of physics and math(any 4D object has infinite mass and any 2D object has 0 mass). In a 4D world, a 3D "world" would only be a slice of the 4D world and 3D objects wouldn't exist
Everything that's ever happened in your life up to this point has lead to you reading these comments and stopping on mine in particular, you can do great things with your life, that's why it was given to you as an experience. Be kind, save a life . Pay it forward!
I love this concept! Just like the 2D people couldn't see 3D around because of their perception, maybe 4D and even higher dimensions are all around us but we can't see them with our 3D eyes. Maybe it's right in front of our eyes, hidden amidst the floating dust particles.
+ToadStar100 No cause, the hypercube it still got just lenght, height and direction, three values so it's still being a 3 dimension object, it's impossible for our mind to think about a 4 dimension object unless we see it.
+Naim Bensaed Zian Thats not true, no. As per the demo in the video, you have to stretch the cube in a 4th dimension, giving it more than just length, height, and width. You are correct though that it is extremely hard to comprehend without seeing it, which is impossible with our senses.
+ToadStar100 I saw a video (I think it was Matt Parker's Royal Institution talk) which showed the 3D net of a 4D hypercube. It was 8 cubes. I think there were 4 on top of each other and then 4 around a single cube.
+ToadStar100 Nobody does, thats the nature of it. It is mentally and physically impossible to know what it looks like. Its super annoying I know. I have been interested in 4 dimension theory for several years now and I have read a number of books looking for an explanation. The unfortunate fact is we can only understand the 4th dimension through mathematics. We cannot visualize it. It sucks.
String theory? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that is just a theory where we almost got everything, we almost can understand our universe but it needs 10th dimension to begin with?
I watched this video a few months ago and now I'm basically making a game about a square fighting to get to the 3rd dimension... thanks for the great video

It just leaves you feeling great ... :) In the era we live in now, it's important not to lose the gift of 'imagination', the thought of possibilities and magical ideas which our ancestors had but we now feel to be completely crazy...
Fun Fact: Humans *can* see in 3d, the brain has trouble processing visual data without at least trying to reconstruct it in three dimensional space. Its why you are able to imagine the space you are perceiving from different perspectives, and memorize the layout of a building.
No, humans can't "see" in 3D, but they can "visualise" in 3D. There's a difference. Whatever we see, is ultimately just a print. Our brain is just able to differentiate objects into 3D easily by looking at their depth, distance. I hope you have heard of how many games print 3D worlds with 2D printing. If you are into coding, you will understand it very well.
@@hritviknijhawan1737 Can we settle this debate? is there any scientific conclusion on this topic of how does human vision works regarding dimensions?
@@kashutosh9132 yeah, the debate is indeed already settled for us by others. Just think about what actually happens when we see anything. Light bounces of the object and enters our eye, where it forms an image. A 2D image. Think of it like a projector maybe. A projector cannot project light into 3D. We all see the world around us in a 2D image but our minds are capable enough to perceive it in 3D. It's the exact same thing as looking at a picture. Tell me, when you look at a photograph or a movie even, it is on a 2D surface, yes? But by looking at the picture or movie you can tell which object is where, and that they represent an image of something 3D. If we were to see in 3D, we would be able to see all sides of an object all together. We would see an object's length, width and height all together from all sides. Right now, we see only 2 out of these 3 dimensions when we look at a 3D object, which also hides 50% or more of the information of the object. Similarly, if we were to see in 1D for instance, which, talking hypothetically, a life form living in 2D would see, we would only see an objects length, just a tiny tiny infinitely thin slice of it, if you get what I mean. I hope it's clear to you now. :)
Then maybe President Sphere would try and kill you for trying to preach the gospel of 4 dimensions. (Only people who have actually watched Flatland the movie will get this)
Its a 3D representation of it. Kinda like if you take a photograph of someone and lay that photo on the table, its actually just a 2D polaroid thats representative of the original
What if I draw a square shape on a paper is it already a 2 dimensional? And what if I created a shape using lego and shaped it in 4D is it already in 4 dimensional? Literally?
ive always thought of writing a book about a 1 dimensional world where the social hierarchy is based on how far up you are and since there is no way to go around others you are stuck in your section from birth to death. the story would then follow a dots journey of entering the second and third dimension to advance his species understanding and abolishing the 1d social hierarchy. but then i would always remember that i cant write.
wait, I have a question. Even if the ball lifts the square high in the air, the square still shouldn't be able to see the third dimension, just one dimensional projection( the same type that is sees) just from a different angle, different perspective, or should it?
Correct, there is no such thing as a 2d shape because if we draw a line there will be length, width and also height because of the led that is on top of the paper. Even a shadow is 3d because are eyes would not be able to see a 2d object. If it has no height, then that means it would be flat down, therefore there would be no 2d (or 1d) object that we can see through the human eye.
There's no such thing as "2d object" in practice, in theory anything with width 0 would mean 2d, but that means its volume would be 0, and it's mass would not exist.. and that thing doesnt exist, anyways 2d is a thing humans defined so literally if you mean something with width close to 0 as 2d, then yeah, a line, paper, shadows would be 2d (It's weird, shadows have mass and can "push objects around just like light"
1:37 I think Edward Abbott overlooked something here. The 2D creatures would have depth perception if they had 2 eyes instead of one. A single eye only sees a 1D line segment (like how one eye only sees a 2D image in our 3D world), but two eyes would create a parallax effect, allowing flatlanders to directly perceive the second dimension just like our two eyes allow us to directly perceive the third! Interestingly, creatures living in an n-dimensional world would always need exactly two eyes to have depth perception in their n-dimensional world no matter how high n goes. For example, 4D creatures would not need three eyes (as one might assume) to see properly in 4D, because each eye would see a slightly different "flat" 3D image, so two eyes side by side would produce a parallax effect that would add the perception of 4D depth.

Everyone thinks of shadows as something special. Quite frankly its not even there, its 'existence' we have given it is just an illusion. They are just an absence of light, like how cold doesn't exist either, just an absence of heat. That is why we have absolute zero and maximum darkness because they all depend of the absence of something. E.g. you cannot add more 'cold' to make an object go beyond absolute zero.
+QuantumBeing That is not the point -_-, imagine replacing every 3D object in the world with a 4D object and replace every 2D picture of an object with a 3D picture of an object O.O

+Evelina Stankevičiūtė yes!!! you are absolutely right. good way of thinking
I think those are more of "approximations" of the 4-D figure, like how we approximate a 3-D figure on a paper...
you are getting too philosophical here, calm down.
We can't see a 4th dimension substance same with that a 2D can't see a 3d object. So, we can't say that we are the only living beings in this whole universe.
Of course. There's animals and bugs and plants and the whole shebang
You are acting as if this is real. LMAO

But those dimensions don't really exist
@@Tom-id7zr just if it passes through their world. The fact that we just see 3 dimensions means that we can just see a tiny fraction of our universe. The past and the future are an example of this, we can't see them no matter what because we can't move through the 4th dimension
The music is like I think it was called “Thomas was alone” really good game.

What if paranormal activity, things appearing and reappearing (ufos, supernatural phenomena) is something 4d accessing and exiting our 3d plane?
This idea is also a main idea in the movie 'Interstellar'
Wout Kops kind of. the 4th dimmension in that case is time. and the tesseract allowed cooper to access the bookshelf
+Barron Risling Well everything they do will happen at the same time. He will be both dead and alive.
It is impossible because it would break all the rules of physics and math(any 4D object has infinite mass and any 2D object has 0 mass). In a 4D world, a 3D "world" would only be a slice of the 4D world and 3D objects wouldn't exist

I love this concept! Just like the 2D people couldn't see 3D around because of their perception, maybe 4D and even higher dimensions are all around us but we can't see them with our 3D eyes. Maybe it's right in front of our eyes, hidden amidst the floating dust particles.

A line is made of 2 points.
A square is made of 4 lines.
A cube is made of 6 squares.
So a hypercube is made of 8 cubes?
+ToadStar100 No cause, the hypercube it still got just lenght, height and direction, three values so it's still being a 3 dimension object, it's impossible for our mind to think about a 4 dimension object unless we see it.
+Naim Bensaed Zian Thats not true, no. As per the demo in the video, you have to stretch the cube in a 4th dimension, giving it more than just length, height, and width. You are correct though that it is extremely hard to comprehend without seeing it, which is impossible with our senses.
Eric "Ozzy" Osburn Well, yeah, I haven't got a clue of what the 4th dimension would look like.
It sucks.
This is the best video on higher dimensions yet! even better than 11 dimensions of String Theory

@@hritviknijhawan1737
Can we settle this debate? is there any scientific conclusion on this topic of how does human vision works regarding dimensions?

The animation, the narration and the music are all excellent.
wait, I have a question. Even if the ball lifts the square high in the air, the square still shouldn't be able to see the third dimension, just one dimensional projection( the same type that is sees) just from a different angle, different perspective, or should it?
Yeah. And his brain wouldnt be able to percieve 3d too.
Does anyone know any real 2D shape? Like we can draw a line. But even that line has length, breath and width (though negligible).
Chaitanya Bhardwaj look at a shadow
a line is 1d not 2d. and thene we draw has 2 dimensions. a line with 0 hieght it is 1d. And btw a cartoon is the best exaple for a 2d object.
Farid The Dancer a shadow isn't 3D the frick? The final casting(the lack of lit on the surface) is what we mean by the shadow
There's no such thing as "2d object" in practice, in theory anything with width 0 would mean 2d, but that means its volume would be 0, and it's mass would not exist.. and that thing doesnt exist, anyways 2d is a thing humans defined so literally if you mean something with width close to 0 as 2d, then yeah, a line, paper, shadows would be 2d
(It's weird, shadows have mass and can "push objects around just like light"
I like that background music!

Exactly! I was about to comment that. Which, by the way, is a great game :)
I knew it sounded like video game music! I'd have said it was a really good game track otherwise.
Morty Face thank you!
