I think what could improve this even further is to provide a simultaneious projection of multiple 3D slices of 4D objects. Like, split your 16:9 screen to 20 squares, and in each square traverse set the value for 4th dimension from a range. All 20 squares depict same scene, but at different 4D depths. Therefore when a cube "disaapears into 4th dimension" in square 1, it should be popping up in square 17 for example. Watching your interactions this way could provide invaluable intuition

It's a 4th spatial axis: you can't imagine it and neither can I, our brains aren't capable of it. We can deal with left-right (x), up-down (y), and forward-backward (z). The objects in this video are, as well as moving in those three spatial axes, also moving through a fourth - But just like the imaginary being on a 2-dimensional plane can't see or imagine a 3rd dimension, we 3-dimensional beings can't see or imagine a 4th. You can describe it mathematically, but you can't display it in a way that makes sense to humans (yet!)
So how did he program it? z-axis moves away from us into the depth. The 4th axis he programed and controlled with a lever to right. I'm fine not seeing it physicaly but explained, yes please.
I’ve been to one of those “4d” movie theaters which are named so stupidly because ADDING A FOG MACHINE TO THE MOVIE DOES NOT ADD A WHOLE NOTHER FREAKING DIMENSION TO THE UNIVERSE
4D in terms of movies usually means adding an element that makes you feel part of the movies world, adding smells, moving seats, soon we might have virtual reality movies
Speaking of the 1st dimension, I have actually thought of a 1D game. Yes. Sure, my thoughts are to keep the GUI 2D, but basically it's an 8 bit-ish style game, where you have a line of pixels and the color of the pixel indicates what is there. A black pixel might be a pit that you have to dash across, a brown or yellow pixel is an enemy you attack, and there are ground pixels and a player pixel.

SRS Secret Rogue Society thats kinda an improbable theory considering spatial dimensions beyond 3 only exist in math, or in theory as suggested by string theory. that said, these different higher dimensional objects or spacetimes dont interact with lower dimensional objects or spacetimes. so ur really just throwing out a whimsical idea that doesnt mean much. its basically impossible by the definition of dimensions for a lower dimensional object to leave its plane for a higher dimensional one. for example, if a square with measurements 1x1 were to leave its two dimensional plane and enter a three dimensional plane, it would have to become a cube with dimensions 1x1x0. but then it isnt two dimensional anymore it now has a third dimension which has no width. but still three dimensional. this is also why it is impossible for us three-dimensional beings to see into four spatial dimensions at one time. because we are bound by three dimensions and always will be.
Hezrayta Bast Brandão this is something incomprehensible to the human mind, this feeling is when it’s compared to something you can understand, but you know behind the 4D plane, there’s something going on that you simply can’t express, it’s physically and mentally impossible, the only way this game was possible to make was some fucking amazing coding, and by god would I love to see it.

"A 2D character can only see 2 dimensions" Actually, from what I remember about dimensions is that from your little stick figure's POV, they'd only see 1 dimension, up and down. 3D characters, like us, can only see in 2D but we live in a 3D world. A 4th dimensional being could theoretically see in 3D (all sides of an object at once) while living in a 4D world, by this logic.
That's because we never see a 4d in our lifetime, so it's nearly impossible to conceive what it looks like. Just like the colors outside our visible spectrum and it's impossible to imagine the unseen colors.

thats not how it works, this game isn't a true representation of 4d, it's impossible to make one this is just a projection of 4d objects onto a 3d space, which is why all the disappearing and reappearing happens if you could actually see what living in a 4d universe would look like then none of that would happen, but of course that's impossible because ours is only 3d, so a representation like this is the best thing we have

Both the premise and interpretation are entirely correct. It's simple math--the same math which defines all n dimensions. You can create a 3D object by taking 2D z-stacks, and a 4D object by taking 3D w-stacks. And no, time is not the fourth dimension. Time is not a spacial dimension at all, and it applies the same to all spacial dimensions no matter how many.

as other people have said, this is actually one of the best videos i've seen on the topic. way easier to understand when you realize that you can't actually "see/visualize" the 4th dimension no matter how hard you try. But you CAN conceptualize knowing that the cube isn't actually disappearing or changing shape, just the part of it you can't see is extended into the W-Axis and the new part that you can see came from the W-Axis into your point of view (probably at W=0, where our 3d plane exists). This is way more interesting and makes a whole lot more sense too when you see them as a solid. All the other videos make the tesseract etc with wireframes which seems like it would helpful but actually makes it more confusing.
I have no clue why, but watching these hyper-objects seemingly change shape as they bounce about the fourth dimension gives off the vibes to me of eating Smarties. This is interesting. Usually, 4D is explained by shadowing 4D objects to get 3D lookalikes. Instead, this is made by taking slices of the 4D space and viewing it in 3D.

This is such an excellent tool and demonstration; I just have one quip. You keep saying "it has moved into the fourth dimension" This isn't correct language. This makes it sound like the dimension is external to the other 3 when it is equally orthogonal. Better phrasing would be to say the shape has moved along the 4th axis (and out of sight if explanation is need). Again, great demo. Minor quip.

@@biopticbl00d It works like any other dimention greater than 1, any aditional axis is orthogonal to all previous axis. we have to imagine it above 3, a 1D character sees a point projection of their reality which is a 0 thickness and width line, a 2D character sees a line projection of their reality which is a 0 thickness plane, a 3D character sees a 2D projection of their reality which is a 3D volume and so on higher.

You say, that for 2d person it's not possible to see 3d objects, but as we can see 3d objects can be visualised on 2d screen thanks to tricks like shading - imitating perspective. Wouldn't it be possible to visualise 4d objects the same way - by shading, or showing wireframes of object in next iterations of 4th coordinate? I'd love to see that and would be very grateful if you could show it to us!
I was thinking just this as I watched. Another trick might be to utilize VR. Show 3D in 2D planes, but have a 3rd dimension of planes to represent the 4th dimension.
For an actual 2D being to be able to see that projection entirely, it would have to be able to see "inside" the 2d image that is created. Same for us, we would need to be able to see inside objects. Although it would probably look a bit messy, I guess we could use a transparent material to represent it. It would be an interesting thing to try
Tobiasz B - The computer graphics and mathematical term for what you are referring to is called “projection”. The term “slicing” refers to what is done in Miegakure and 4D Toys, in that you are literally taking an (n-1)-dimensional slice of the source object along a plane (in the case of 3D to 2D) or volume (in the case of 4D to 3D) or hypervolume (in the case of higher dimensional slicing). That much is intuitive. The way to think intuitively about what projection refers to is as though it’s a shadow, and actually you don’t need a computer to do it. Just hold a box up near a wall sometime and observe how the cuboid distorts into something weird on the wall if you think of yourself living in that 2-D space, with the line segments growing and shrinking for no apparent reasons and all the right angles bent out of shape. That’s the same thing. Or consider Enceladus’s shadow from the Sun on the cloud layers of Jupiter if you want to consider a spherical example. Same thing. Then you have the choice of what projection transform you‘d like to use (with perspective and isometric projections being most common), and whether shapes should be solid or semi-transparent or merely wireframe as shading choices are significant to the reality your portraying. This would be an addition to 4D Toys I’d really like to see… a button which would be able to switch you from a sliced to a projected view of the space. However, I would say that might be a lot of effort as it would rely on a completely different rendering support code and such a capability wouldn’t be appropriate for the Miegakure game (it would make it too easy to spot things nearby which were temporarily out of your view because of your position and orientation). In any case… great question. Wikipedia has a great entry cataloging a variety of such spatial transformations (collect ’em all in your graphics libraries!): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_projection
Instead of taking 3D slices of your 4D toybox, you could wire-frame the shapes and build a virtual 4D camera that takes 3D photos. Then we could see all 16 corners and 32 edges of a tesseract at the same time. If a smaller tesseract passes inside a larger one, it's really just farther from the camera in the same 4D direction. With enough computing power you could do shading and ray-tracing in 4D, but a 1000x1000x1000 output image would contain a billion voxels and be very hard to view.
This is absolutely the best visualization of 4D I have ever seen. I already understood the concept but seeing how the toys changed so dynamically made some click in my mind. Thank you thank you!
I love it how ABSOLUTELY NOBODY can understand what is going on or what the 3d cube looks like, as four-dimensional life can see an entire 3d plane, however our vision is 2D
Why? We’re not supposed to know what 4d looks like. Similar to how a 2d plane (or piece of paper) is a SLICE of a 3d object. A 3d object is basically PART of a 4d object.
"I knocked over this pile, and some of the cubes fell into the fourth dimension, so I can't see them anymore" Never before has anyone said something so cool, so casually.
I wouldn't say "it moves into the 3rd dimension" or "it moves into the 4th dimension" because they are already in there .. It moves within it not into it ..
For a 2D being there is no third dimension. Because we see their entire world (we're 3D beings) doesn't mean that 2D beings have a third dimension. The same applies to forth dimension so his wording is right.
@@shayanmoosavi9139 For the 2D being there was no 3D dimension, but we could see there was and that objects were just moving through it and not in and out of it.
I think the best way of putting it would be to say that it moves out of our current 3D slice of the 4th dimension. (The same way that the 3D objects were moving out of the 2D character's 2D slice of the 3rd dimension.)
4:34 this is disturbing, imagine “4D beings” creating a portal to our “3D world”. They could rip our organs, muscle, and bones out of our skin without dropping a single blood drop.
That might not be possible, because we 3 dimensional beings are bound to our respective planes. Since 4D beings aren’t bound to us, we might be unable to be harmed by them because they might have no choice but push our world around in the fourth dimension when they try to interact with it. Like if there was a two dimensional universe in our universe, we might not be able to stick our hands into it, because it has less dimensions than our hand, so we’d just push it through the third spatial dimension instead. However this means they’d be able to harm us by just ripping our universe apart which is way worse.
Some mistakes: a 2d character can only see in 1d, we have two eyes that make an illusion of 3d,but we actually see only plane views of a 3d shadow of 4d objects.
Yeah. 2D beings would actually see an object growing taller on a single axis instead of it expanding. So maybe we’re the ones who would see a shape expanding, and from everyone else’s POV, their 2D vision would see the 4-D object changing and growing in different ways.
finally, the type of game I have always wanted. I would try making this myself if I was better at programming. Another 4-dimensional game I'd really like to try would be a fps or similar, exploring a doom-like hell level, but there are obstacles you can't go around in 3d so you have to move "heavenwards" to get around. There would be a continuum of 3d layers between "heaven" and "hell", with the level design being gradually morphed from one extreme to the other
There's no distinction between the third and fourth dimension to a 2d guy. Anything that moved in one direction would be indistinguishable from something that moved in the other. It's merely a plane of travel that is skew from his plane.
Have you played around with 4D ray-casting? It is how 3D objects are rendered on a 2D screen. (with 3D ray-casting) You basically have point from with a bunch of rays(lines) that go through a rectangle. Each pixel on the screen gets the color the ray, that goes trough the rectangle at that position, hits first. (the rectangle is mapped to the screen). By moving the rectangle relative to the point you zoom (moving it closer/further) and rotate (moving it on a sphere) and by moving them both (but not relative to each other) you move the camera. (actually it's not a rectangle but a part of the surface of a sphere but that doesn't really mater here) You could do a similar thing by moving around a cuboid in the 4th dimension. And mapping it to pixels in a VR world. (again it's actually the surface of a hyper-sphere) Or you could try to go down 2 dimensions (in 3D it's moving around a line, in 4D a rectangle) (the line is a segment of 1 of the circles on the surface of the sphere, the rectangle is a segment of one of the spheres on the surface of a hyper-sphere) This should contain more information that just showing 1 3D slice and ray-casting that to 2D. It should also look less weird (because objects actually hit the ground ect ( for a 3D being it's already confusing if you just see a slice of a 3d world but not confusing to see a ray-casted version). So it could be less confusing) Also I want to see a Klein Bottle in your 4D toy box.
Interesting idea, but you would have to project the voxel structure you get onto a 2D screen. I think I'll experiment with that. (the problem that arises is the following: if your scene is full enough, most of those voxels won't be transparent. So you can't do the normal projections, but have to do something else, even though that would break the symmetry that would arise: a 3D shape would still look normal, as long as it is rotated correctly)
@@Mreoewwmrow In fact they would see ALL points of 3D space as just a single line, or a string, they would need some kind of 4D viewing device that can show 3D (the way we have screens to see 2D pictures) to get a slice of the string, which would appear to them as a VR world fully 3D (not the way we see the world which is just 2D pictures with a framerate as fast as our brains can process) They would see 3D immersive still images as fast as their brains could process
@Stale Bagelz yep, it's more like 2d beings would see a 'line', but just conceptually. This line only has one dimension so it can't even be visualised as a line you could draw.
Imagen you're in your bedroom and this floating sphere just comes out of nowhere and starts randomly growing, shrinking, and moving... then you realize that the sphere is controlled by a 4 dimensional baby
To me, this is absolutely fascinating, but it is also very difficult to comprehend. For what I gathered, after watching other videos on the matter as well, one can see the 4th dimensions as a place where an object has all of its possible shapes stored/represented in. A 4D sphere might have any diameter variation between a minimum and a maximum diameter.Inside the objects is a collection of vertices and the many ways this vertices are connected to each other is stored in the 4th dimension. By moving back and forth thru the dimension, we can visualize each of said "ways of connecting vertices", and thus the various possible shapes.
@ryan7351 ryan7351 well think of the 2D world 3D object example in this video. It was probably not extremely difficult for you to get your head around how and why stuff behaves like it does there. A 4D being should equally be able to understand what's happening a lot more intuitively just seeing the 3D slice of a 4D object.
I enjoyed this video, but I do have one issue that kept bugging me throughout the entire thing. Whenever an object "disappeared", you said it "moved into the 4th dimension". They're all already in the 4th dimension, they're just moving along the 4th axis, which we can't visualize. Just a note, otherwise, great video, really entertaining and a pretty comprehensible explanation of an extremely complicated concept.

Cassandra Bankson isn't this basically show how wormhole would work in 3d, it knocks thing into higher dimension.

I have had struggles with the 4th dimension to, I lost my entire school project because it hit a hypercube and made a weird bounce into the 4th dimension.
that would be like a 2d square getting bounced upwards into the 3rd dimension by a cube (and only being a square, and not secretly a cube)
So, a better term would be that it "fell" through the fourth dimension.
That's why dude, never play with a Tesseract
"A 2D character can only see 2 dimensions" Actually, from what I remember about dimensions is that from your little stick figure's POV, they'd only see 1 dimension, up and down. 3D characters, like us, can only see in 2D but we live in a 3D world. A 4th dimensional being could theoretically see in 3D (all sides of an object at once) while living in a 4D world, by this logic.

Both the premise and interpretation are entirely correct. It's simple math--the same math which defines all n dimensions. You can create a 3D object by taking 2D z-stacks, and a 4D object by taking 3D w-stacks.

@JBryan314 Nah, the bull's hypercube is, not yours.
as other people have said, this is actually one of the best videos i've seen on the topic. way easier to understand when you realize that you can't actually "see/visualize" the 4th dimension no matter how hard you try.

Greeeeat question, sir. I will love to know that, too
I was thinking just this as I watched.
Wikipedia has a great entry cataloging a variety of such spatial transformations (collect ’em all in your graphics libraries!):

Instead of taking 3D slices of your 4D toybox, you could wire-frame the shapes and build a virtual 4D camera that takes 3D photos. Then we could see all 16 corners and 32 edges of a tesseract at the same time. If a smaller tesseract passes inside a larger one, it's really just farther from the camera in the same 4D direction.
With enough computing power you could do shading and ray-tracing in 4D, but a 1000x1000x1000 output image would contain a billion voxels and be very hard to view.

This was from another video, I think a vsauce video I forget lmao
Why did you say that
Thank you for sharing this beautiful possibility
That might not be possible, because we 3 dimensional beings are bound to our respective planes. Since 4D beings aren’t bound to us, we might be unable to be harmed by them because they might have no choice but push our world around in the fourth dimension when they try to interact with it. Like if there was a two dimensional universe in our universe, we might not be able to stick our hands into it, because it has less dimensions than our hand, so we’d just push it through the third spatial dimension instead. However this means they’d be able to harm us by just ripping our universe apart which is way worse.
I want to see it! The rings becoming untangled are related to the timetravel paradox, in 4D there is a path around all sides of a binary fork 😮
Some mistakes: a 2d character can only see in 1d, we have two eyes that make an illusion of 3d,but we actually see only plane views of a 3d shadow of 4d objects.

@@mericaman6388 why
@@mericaman6388 not nerd, but god
Yeah. 2D beings would actually see an object growing taller on a single axis instead of it expanding. So maybe we’re the ones who would see a shape expanding, and from everyone else’s POV, their 2D vision would see the 4-D object changing and growing in different ways.
Merica Man what have you done all your life clown
finally, the type of game I have always wanted.
I would try making this myself if I was better at programming. Another 4-dimensional game I'd really like to try would be a fps or similar, exploring a doom-like hell level, but there are obstacles you can't go around in 3d so you have to move "heavenwards" to get around. There would be a continuum of 3d layers between "heaven" and "hell", with the level design being gradually morphed from one extreme to the other
If you watch their other videos they're making something similar to your idea
Fun fact: doom was a 2D game creating a 3D illusion.

J.Escape | “Imagine a pair of directions you can never go to. Now do that 2 times! That’s the 5th dimension.”
(with 3D ray-casting)
You basically have point from with a bunch of rays(lines) that go through a rectangle.
(actually it's not a rectangle but a part of the surface of a sphere but that doesn't really mater here)
You could do a similar thing by moving around a cuboid in the 4th dimension. And mapping it to pixels in a VR world.
(again it's actually the surface of a hyper-sphere)
Or you could try to go down 2 dimensions (in 3D it's moving around a line, in 4D a rectangle)
(the line is a segment of 1 of the circles on the surface of the sphere, the rectangle is a segment of one of the spheres on the surface of a hyper-sphere)
This should contain more information that just showing 1 3D slice and ray-casting that to 2D.
It should also look less weird (because objects actually hit the ground ect ( for a 3D being it's already confusing if you just see a slice of a 3d world but not confusing to see a ray-casted version). So it could be less confusing)
Also I want to see a Klein Bottle in your 4D toy box.
I wrote a simple rasterizer in 4D, but a true ray-tracer (for each pixel) would be very difficult to make efficient...
Interesting idea, but you would have to project the voxel structure you get onto a 2D screen. I think I'll experiment with that. (the problem that arises is the following: if your scene is full enough, most of those voxels won't be transparent. So you can't do the normal projections, but have to do something else, even though that would break the symmetry that would arise: a 3D shape would still look normal, as long as it is rotated correctly)
just like the old wolfenstien thats a good idea

4th dimensional beings could literally see any point of 3d space of an object
@@Mreoewwmrow In fact they would see ALL points of 3D space as just a single line, or a string, they would need some kind of 4D viewing device that can show 3D (the way we have screens to see 2D pictures) to get a slice of the string, which would appear to them as a VR world fully 3D (not the way we see the world which is just 2D pictures with a framerate as fast as our brains can process) They would see 3D immersive still images as fast as their brains could process

@@Ziegenhainy Well, he was talking about a specific part in the video, so he sort of did.
I don’t understand that one. Wouldn’t it still be attached in the fourth dimension?
To me, this is absolutely fascinating, but it is also very difficult to comprehend. For what I gathered, after watching other videos on the matter as well, one can see the 4th dimensions as a place where an object has all of its possible shapes stored/represented in. A 4D sphere might have any diameter variation between a minimum and a maximum diameter.Inside the objects is a collection of vertices and the many ways this vertices are connected to each other is stored in the 4th dimension. By moving back and forth thru the dimension, we can visualize each of said "ways of connecting vertices", and thus the various possible shapes.
I don’t understand what people are saying, everyone here can see what is going on, is simple, what are you guys, blind?
Wait... wrong dimension
