Let me guess…you were born in early 70’s.? I love allot of 80’s music, but I wouldn’t call it the most diverse decade…..70’s an 90’s were pretty damn diverse.
Steelheart was 90's actually. That's why they didn't really take off. By the time this song charted in 1990, grunge and alternative rock were literally on the cusp of taking over the music world. Smells Like Teen Spirit was released barely a year after this song came out.

I'm 54 years old, and many, many vocalists have blessed my ears, mind, and ❤, and Miljenko has earned his place in my life's soundtrack.
His mother is an Opera singer. He still sounds AMAZING!!!

If you should ever watch the 2001 movie Rock Star, staring Mark Wahlberg, this singer (Miljenko Matijevic) is the one who does Wahlberg's singing voice. The "band" Wahlberg ends up singing for is made up of Jason Bonham, son of the drummer from Led Zeppelin on drums, Jeff Pilson formally of Dokken, now with Foreigner on bass, and Zakk Wylde of Ozzy Osburn fame on guitar. It's a silly little movie, but it's fun.

Drummer here :) - those are actually single headed bass drums mounted way up high - a somewhat common thing back in the late 80s and early 90s. You also may notice he's set up for left handed playing - the toms go from small to large left to right instead of right to left . RIP John Fowler and the drums from the Grand Canyon....

I was never a Steelheart fan, but they were definitely a solid band. Miljenko Matijevic has a ridiculous vocal range.

This guy's voice is like a laser beam- pure, focused, and powerful. Every single time I hear this song I am impressed and awed. SO glad you got around to this one, and I am so glad you liked it!!
This whole album is fire!!! So under rated. I bet if they put this out in 87 instead of 92 it would have been massive. Just a few years late imo.

I saw Steelheart live in concert back in the 90's and let me tell you, the lead singer sounds even better live. He hit every note and then some! He never went off key and the band put on an amazing show. The vocals were insane! It was if his vocals got stronger and stronger as the concert went on. He sounded even better during the last song of the encore...

Mili stills sings really good. He can still hit those notes but has lost the ability to sustain them but he still sings better than most singers who are in their prime ! He does not use falsetto... He used Straight up power ! Listen to a live recording from that era. This was not recording tricks. He sang those songs live just like the album !!!

I’m 52 years old. I’ve seen over 200 bands. Hands DOWN, Miljenko has the BEST VOICE in rock. His range is UNMATCHED!! And YES, he sounds JUST LIKE THIS live!!
One of the greatest 80s Hair Band songs and vocals. When he was younger, he could hit those notes, now older, the song is structured differently, but still good.

I interviewed Mike (the name I knew him by) and he said he was driving down the highway when the song "Angel Eyes" by Jeff Healey came on the radio. He said he was so up set, he had to pull over and calm down. Hence the name for this song is "I'll Never Let You Go (Angels Eyes)". Songs had to have a unique title back then. I also asked him how many Octaves he had, but I forgot his answer!! but it was more than 5. He can go crazy low and easily hit an E5.

I absolutely love watching reactions to this absolutely powerhouse rock ballad! Especially when he blasts off into the stratosphere with that amazing range! You guys did not disappoint 😂 Miljenko has a true god given talent with a heart to match and can still hit those notes! Sadly, the drummer, John Fowler passed away in 2008 from a brain aneurysm 😢 He was definitely a great drummer and very entertaining. Watch a few more of their videos! ❤

This was one of my favorite songs back in the day. "Everybody Loves Eileen" is a really good one, too! Loved the whole album!!

This song captures the 80s vibe perfectly. High pitched male singer, slow and soft at first, then power ballad rocks out.

What totally blows us away as listeners is THAT IS HIS ACTUAL VOICE, not falsetto. That is vocal talent right there!!! I can hit those notes with falsetto. When a guy can sing like that without resorting to falsetto, you know he has a special gift.

"My Love Is Gone" is Mili at his best even though he's in his fifties he still hits those notes. Love you guy's so much.You make me smile.
He had such vocal range. What I love about him is he sings the high notes and it shows.
"I'll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)" peaked @ #23 on the Billboard Pop Hot 100 chart in 1991. Their next single was "She's Gone (Lady)" which peaked @ #59 in 1991 also. That was it.
That was it because that was when the lighting truss fell on Mili he had to learn how to sing again....such a shame they would have been huge.
The political establishment within the music industry chose to drop 80s music. They dictate what people listen to.
They have a some great music. Try “Sticky side up”and “Can’t stop me from loving you”. His voice is amazing.

This band is absolutely amazing and sooo underrated. His voice was used in the 2001 movie “Rock Star” starring Jennifer Aniston and Mark Walhberg.
Steelheart has other great songs as well, check out She's Gone and Sheila as well, vocals are off the charts ! Btw, this dude still sings great today

That's the other song I was thinking of with singers who go high at the end! I think it held (holds?) a record for longest-sustained and highest note at the end of a song.
The singer, Freddie Curci, also sang in a band called Alias. You can easily find them on YT
One of the last hair metal hits from the Summer of 1991. A few months later Nirvana and grunge/alternative took over and overnight bands like Steelheart were instantly obsolete.
Grunge/alternative instantly killed our local club scene.
@@lesliebolick2407 Saigon Kick, Ugly Kid Joe and Jackyl somehow were able to have hits and Wayne's World was a hit movie in late 1991 and early 1992 but it pretty much over by then. It reminded me of when Disco died in 1979. Overnight it was over but Funky Town was a hit in 1980.
More grunge and rap imo. The industry discovered they could get far less talent for far less money, plug money into marketing, and sell it. And they did. There's actually been studies done on the objective loss of talent that hit the music world right around 1990. In 1989 we all thought the 90's were going to be unbelievable...instead, the exact opposite happened.
We used this as our couples dance at our wedding in 1993. Got a lot of weird looks but a lot of people also liked it. My mom still reminds me of my terrible choice of 'that screaming song'. I love it!!

The drums were programmed in the studio and it was called 'gated reverb'. That trend was popular in the 80's.

We're lucky Milijenko is still with us. A heavy light bar fell on him during a concert and as I understand it, he barely survived.
The drumming is amazing his voice is amazing! This is what it was like growing up in the 80’s. This is also why you should check out April Wines-She’s a roller and see how many lead guitarist in this band.
To me, the most beautiful singer of all times--not just his voice and his looks, but his entire being, his entire soul is in his every note and move. Really.... just an absolutely graceful, strong and phenomenally beautiful singer.
When the vocals started he gave his wife the look ;) lol. This is a great song for any guy to play for his girl, wife, love interest, or whatever they're called lol. Love the review, definitely a POWER ballad for sure. The fact Milijenko can still bang this song out very well in his late 50s is a testament to his dedication and wellness. RIP to the original drummer John Fowler who passed away too early, in his 40s...
I recently saw your reaction to Luther's "Here and Now", if you react to him in the future, I would suggest "A House is not a Home", live at the 1988 NAACP Awards...you'll see why he's considered the best r&b male vocalist ever by many.
Whenever I think about range, Chris Cornell always comes to mind for me. The Day I Tried to Live, Rusty Cage, Fell On Black Days, Spoonman, Jesus Christ Pose, Birth Ritual, Hands All Over, Cochise, I Am the Highway, and so many more!!!

Two good friends of mine were roommates with the lead singer, Mike. I had a chance to meet him at the apartment in Greenwich, CT, and he did a 12-string acoustic version of this song in the living room. Really nice guy and a huge talent.

Love my 80s music. Still rockin my long hair at nearly 53 lol. Altho Steelheart never got as big as bands like Poison an Whitesnake. That voice is arguably the strongest of all back then. mayb even still.
