They’re probably going to wait another 2 years to get every clear and obvious upgrade in one go. Kinda like finally getting all of the features from the normal apple earbuds (triple and double tap, pause and volume increase) in the AirPods Pro 2nd gen.
They can absolutely still do all features in one go without doing this "experimental phase". They just do this so that people would buy more in the end. When they finally do all features in one go fans would cream their pants for apple being "Smart". thus Apple can keep them like obedient little dogs.... Im still getting the Ipad air 5 though XD
It also goes a long way when you recommend the right product to a customer without all the extra bells and whistles they dont need. And most of the time theyll spread the good word and gets you more business.

You're the first person I've seen to give a potential explanation as to why the Gen 2 pencil isn't supported, and it finally makes sense when I think about it as a direct compromise between the camera on the long edge and new pencil support (although it making sense doesn't quite make it any less annoying). No, no, no, it has to do with the technology. It might seem like a new iPad but it’s using previous hardware, that screen will not work with the 2nd gen newer pencil because it’s different technology. Older screen, older pencil. Personally I like the older pencil better, it has heft, weight. The newer model iPad Pros that work with the 2nd gen pencil, have a different kind of screen technology. Its an entirely new patent. Now for a 3rd example, think of how Wacom tablets can use a pen that needs no battery power because the screen tech and pen use a sort of mesh and static. Its been a while i forget. But its a great video opportunity just waiting for someone to make interesting on how these three types of screens work with their type of stylus. Watching this from my iPad Pro 3rd gen (12.9”, 1TB storage, a monster, and makes me not miss my laptop)…I bought it over 3 years ago, and have been using it almost daily since. I won’t need to be replacing it for atleast a few years. Also love the 2nd gen pencil, it still works perfectly. Only thing I need to replace soon is the keyboard folio.
I have an iPad Pro 2nd Gen (12.9") and I'm convinced everything is trying to tell me my iPad doesn't exist, but it's still new enough to get updates and be treated like it exists. I don't even know anymore man...

This iPad + keyboard attachment ($850) costs as much as a brand new Macbook Air M1 (discounted to $899 all the time now, $600 for unopened box/brand NEW on eBay).

Once you upgrade the storage and add the keyboard, you are flying close to MacBook Air territory, which would be a better choice for anything but drawing. And for digital art, the iPad Pro is definitely a better choice. Good points. Thank you.
the ipad is also better for taking notes at university, writing with the pencil is so much better than using a laptop especially for maths, engineering etc but of course if you use an ipad you will also need a laptop for heavier stuff
I think the iPads could be used more and more for educational purposes. And the simple advantage of being able to write and draw with a pen makes the iPads more effective
An ipad that made sense would be this new ipad with 128 which is what people actually need now. at the same price with the magic pencil 2 being compatible.

Why can’t they just move the webcam on the iPad Pro to the correct spot and put the magnet charger for the pencil on the top/left where the camera used to be?
They could just move the camera a bit either to the right or the left (2-3 cm) to make space for the Apple Pencil charging module. Older generations of iPhones have the camera slightly to the side to make space for the front speaker.

Why didn’t you wait till the 4 mini wasn’t able to get updates anymore 15.7.2 update was literally just released and I found out there good till 16. Over all I thought my mini was finish when it comes to updates so I purchased the 10 and thought it was a piece of garbage so I took it back, as returning from the store I thought I’d check one last time to see if there was any update and holy crap 15.7.2 popped up, so over all I’m good for another year.
@@joewatson3261 I'm fixing to upgrade from the mini 4 as well. Only reason I am doing it is because I use it every single day while at work and it has gotten insanely slow. If it wasn't so slow, I would just keep it. But it takes like 30 seconds for my app to open now.
@@joewatson3261 From experience once your iPad or iPhone is on the last of the updates the device is slowing down. Still usable but lags and often has a degraded battery. Still usable but time to upgrade.
I’m glad that it supports the gen 1 pencil, since it’d be ridiculous to have to get another one. But not supporting the gen 2?! You’re right, I don’t get why this exists. They could’ve just revamped the 9th gen camera and port, and integrated all of the newer functions into a new iPad Pro

@@STORMFIRE07 I mean that they can’t really change the fact that the gen 1 pencil has a lightening charger, that pre-dates the change in EU regulations, so it’s naturally going to not be directly compatible going forward. Short of having a gen 1.2 with a USB C charger to fit, an adapter is the easiest option
@@Lex_brooke personally, imo they would have easily solved the non compatibility issue just by making iPad compatible with Apple Pencil 2 instead, by removing the keyboard connector from the bottom and making the iPad keyboard Bluetooth only, and putting the magnetic charger for Apple Pencil there instead And for the people who already had Apple Pencil 1, they should have held an upgrade program for them to update to Apple Pencil 2 instead (like charging $30 bucks for upgrade, since Apple Pencil 2 costs $129 vs $99 for Apple Pencil 1), so everyone wins
The base ipad was always the #1 tablet I reccomended to anyone who asked because the value at the $329 price tag was impossible to beat. Now at $449 it's a much harder sell, and I hope they keep the "old case new chips" system like with the iphone SE around for it and just make it the iPad SE.

I believe it's to keep the new features exclusive to their "pro" lineup, they do that all the time. Also theres a rumor of a USB-C Apple Pencil coming soon. (edit: usb-c pencil is not real but possibly a new version soon)
Great insight! I bought a 9th-generation iPad a week before the 10th was announced (my 7th-gen fell on a tile floor and smashed into a thousand pieces). Once I heard about the 10th-gen, I deliberately avoided torturing myself by looking at the tech that I barely missed out on. However, after watching this video and hearing your absolutely fair criticisms and questions, I don’t feel so bad anymore! 😀 I won’t lie, the webcam on the long side would be really helpful because I use my iPad (in landscape mode) for Zoom pretty regularly. I also don’t use an Apple Pencil, and I do have a USB-C charge cable already, so the 10th-gen would have some clear perks. Still, I’m not super keen on the $100+ price bump, and I am utterly dependent on my iPad keyboard (I didn’t have to buy a new one because the 7th and 9th are the same dimensions). Given the huge price bump, I probably would’ve stuck with the 9th-gen anyway, so I feel good that I made the choice I did! 😀 Thanks a lot for the video! Made me feel better!

I went with a last-gen ipad air, and feel much the same way. Hardly any improvements, and absolutely no sense of missing out on the cool new thing with it. My old ipad still does everything I need/want it to do, and does it as well as ever.

I just got the iPad 9th gen for school and I love it. Honestly for just taking notes and doing the basics, nothing more than the basic iPad is needed. I do like the design of the 10th gen, but at that point just get the iPad Air 4th gen.
Fun fact, in Indonesia there are many apple pencil “dupes” which offer palm rejection with prices as low as $15-20. They are shaped like the 2nd generation apple pencil, with magnetic sides and type c charging plus tilt sensitivity. You don’t have to pair anything either. If you double tap the pencil they’ll work straight away. The only downside is the pressure sensitivity and lower latency. In my opinion if you’re getting the base 10th gen ipad just for school and notetaking, the new squared bezel paired with apple pencil dupe will do wonders! Type c charging + magnetic attachment is something i’d die for. If you’re looking something for art might as well get an ipad air/pro. Just my thoughts 😊
the reason I got the new 2022 iPad instead of the last gen is for note-taking in school. The new screen without the home button seemed to work better as a "notebook", and I did not need the features of the iPad pro or air, which were both also out of my price range. I think in this aspect the new iPad excels, but I do agree that the whole apple pencil situation is very weird.

I was thinking of upgrading my 6th gen iPad to the 10th but after seeing it I think I'll go with the 9th. Even the Air was too expensive for me despite having the better specs.
The new iPad makes the 9th look dated, that home button with huge bezels has been there since the 1st gen. Not to mention the lightning port that will make it very dated when everything Apple sells is compatible with USB-C (except iPhones but it'll most likely be for the iPhone 15). Sure, it's more expensive but it's a much better product than the 9th gen
I got this iPad on sale to replace my 2012 iPad retina that had become too slow. I just want to read books, make notes, stream something, and doodle in some sketching apps. I won’t get those keyboard accessories or any of that. I’m happy with my 10th gen iPad.
I was looking forward to this one because I wanted to ditch my lightning cables, and for the easy USB-C to HDMI support (I'm a teacher so I need to quickly jack-into an A/V setup when I rush into a classroom with only 50 minutes of lecture time). The 64BG storage is even OK for me, as most of the presentations are on the cloud. In my current 6th Gen iPad I'm using only 44 out of 128 available GB. Also I'm in a country that borders China, so $10 knock-off versions of that keyboard and kickstand will probably be out soon enough. But that price... hooooo doggies. Did I mention I'm a teacher? [update] for those asking, I'm in Thailand. The salary is not that bad here, probably about the median for ASEAN countries. So yes I can afford an $800 iPad but... it's hard to pay that much when they've been running $350-$400 up till now. I could also afford to buy a $50 t-shirt and $75 pair of underwear but that doesn't mean I'm going to. I will most likely stay with my Gen 6 since it's working just fine.

True if you are talking about upgrading an entire fleet of iPads, but not true if you are adding additional iPads to the fleet and want to have that feature preserved while slowly migrating things over to USB-C. This is especially true in Europe where USB-C is the law of the land.

My dad who’s really techie and knows plenty more about Apple than me, asked me if it was worth to pick up the new one over an older gen or an older pro. I love my 11inch iPad Pro, it’s absolutely delightful for an in between a laptop and digital art tool. The newer pencil is also my major selling point.

I'm just content that our man Marques beats the subscribers count of that silly Linus Tech Tips. I could agree that Linus has somewhat evolved from the pure nasty clickbait with very poor content to a somewhat reputable brand that attracted good collabs/accolades that helped minor channels grow stronger. But seeing young Marques evolve from teen with no real skills for video making to the perfection he's at now, always providing on point info and genuine tech-loving vibe is something else entirely.
I see 3 reasons for why he can't get 200 mil or probably won't ever get 50+ mil. 1 people usually know what they want or have someone they ask for about upgrades. 2 Not everyone in the world speaks english, hence a lot of chinese, indian and spanish tech channels. 3 tech literacy, most of the people just don't care as long as product does as advertised, or only check reviews once a year or every other year when they need an upgrade.

Right, being from Europe, the iPad prices are bit higher than those overseas, which I kind of get. However, 2 weeks ago I purchased an AiPad Air for €638 (including a teacher discount). Then this new "basic" iPad came out, and when I checked the same retailer's price of the Air including the discount, it said €722. And we are talking about the 64 GB version... They had to raise the price of the Air in order to make the base model worth buying. The base model should start at $399 at most.

Yeah, agree. You’re better off getting the iPad Air if you want something more than the $329 model. If pencil 2 support was there along with 128gb it would be a great in between model between the base and Air but it’s just in such an awkward part of the line up right now.
128gb shouldn't even exist anymore either. They're just milking money out of consumers for storage even tho it doesn't cost them anything to make it 256 or even 512gb
I just got the 9th gen for Christmas. It works great. It’s my first iPad and I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m watching this video on it as we speak. Seems like the 9th gen was a solid choice lol I may upgrade in a few years when they get their act together with the new ones 😂 but we shall see…
I just got the iPad 9th Gen too, and I love it as my 3rd iPad. Sure the pricier models are nicer, but I know I don't need them, as I have a pretty good desktop PC and an old MacBook Pro for my creative stuff. Plus I've never understood the gripe about the bezels... Super thin bezels make sense on a monitor, or even a phone, but an iPad is larger and heavier - you need something to hold on to! The iPad 9th Gen 10.2 will stand you in good stead for many years, my friend, and the base model is a steal at £319 here in the UK (Is it $399 in the US? Can't remember.) Just be frugal with apps as the 64GB storage can fill up fast with today's ridiculous app sizes.

I recently bought the iPad 10th gen with the Apple Pencil, from Best Buy and i bought the version with the adapter included with the Apple Pencil for the same exact price for just the Apple Pencil.
I can’t speak completely to how Marques Brownlee is doing financially, but I love how even with success, he is not losing touch with how the cost to this tablet to the average consumer is not a good price margin. Great video and great advice!
Once I saw the specs on this the first time, I compared it to my wife’s 2020 iPad Air and it’s about the same (difference being camera and pencil mainly). That gen sells for 469 at Walmart currently (if you can find it). I feel like for most you should just find a 4th gen iPad Air for a little more if you’re going to use a pencil. It’ll be far less frustrating for about the same price.
If the display was laminated there would be almost no differences between this and iPad Air so they gotta leave some features out for the iPad Air so it makes sense to buy it
Solution: just place the charging cutout a bit to the side and voila it works. Would need a new Apple Pencil though with the charging receiver not in the middle, so that it still attaches symmetrical to the side and leaves space for the camera on the long side… But that’s up for next year I guess.
It sounds like Apple isn't really investing in the iPad design team. They've made a design that kinda works and they're done for a while. Now, for the next few years they just want to ride this wave and have an ipad at literally every possible price category to ensure that everyone with different budgets interested in an ipad has an ipad to buy. I wonder though where their design team is focused on right now. Hopefully, on some cool brand new product

@@JonahNelson7 lowkey is, most tablets are used for services suchs as healthcare or clothing brands for checkups. Laptops blow out of the water tablets nowadays and theres even hybrid laptops that turn into tablets making the latter even more questionable to buy.
Im still using 7th gen and it works perfectly (no freeze or anything), i like the design more too and gen 1 pen is so ez to use, charging is super super fast so it hanging out from the charging port for a while doesnt concern me (not that i use my tablet for charging, there are outlets everywhere to do that) and i still have the parts of it from the og box cuz i use a offbrand keyboard that came with a magnetic case (i dont even know its brand lmao) that has little carvings for keeping those pieces. That keyboard was 300 turkish liras when i bought it, now its around 400-500 turkish liras so around 20 dolars but it works perfectly, also its adaptable for android and pc too. And I use logitech pebble cuz its super cheap and way better then og mouse. Also lets be honest we have apps like lumafusion that uses external storage (also premiere rush plans to add that feature and the app is free) to edit vids and safari to use shortcuts which when you add them they act like real apps and we have cloud storage (i use both icloud and g drive so i dont even need to pay for extra storage) so we dont really need a pc like storage. My ipad is 32gb yet even tho i have 4 games that are around 1-5gb and other apps (around 10 core apps like pages, collanote and etc.) that are around 100mb-1gb, i still have around 6gb storage left which allows me to edit small vids. Just learn how to handle the storage and use apple's office apps instead microsoft cuz they work with icloud. Drawing apps have no problem too, you can open almost infinite new tabs and etc.
If you want a similar case for the iPad Pro, there’s the logitech combo touch. Funny thing is, it’s literally the exact same case as what apple has released now for the baseline iPad. And did I mention the logitech is only $200?? I’ve been using it with my iPad Pro 2020 now for over a year and I love it. Additionally, no external charging or bluetooth connection is needed. The logitech case is actually endorsed by apple so it uses the smart 3 pin connector to work.
Yes. But for me, 1. It's pretty thick 2. It's still $200, which is still a bit expensive (tho not a big problem for ipad pro users) I have the ipad 9 256gb, the combo touch for that is $150, apple pencil is another $100, so the combined price would be $480 + $150 + $100 = $730, for the most basic ipad mind you... Ipads are great but man, ipads accessories are expensive as hell, but the logitech seems to be the only(?) keyboard that's using the 3pin connector instead of bt...
I have it, but the issue with that one is that it's not magnetic and it's made to be always attached (it's a hassle to remove it), and it you want to use the iPad without a case (as light as possible) it's not a great solution (maybe it's made for those who are always worried that they could break their iPad...)
The storage is really what I don’t understand, 64 gigs is insanely low almost unusable. Also, I like Apple‘s website basically tries to convince you to upgrade storage with the little note underneath it where it says to think long term.
Its marketing. Apple knows 64 is too low for anything. Thats why they have a more expensive version with more storage. They can use the low storage to market a lower price. Realistically most ppl will (idiotically) buy the more expensive ipad

I prefer it as a media consumption device because really we're not past that yet. And if you just use it for media, drawing, or gaming, or whatever less consuming activity you might do, 64 gb could be enough, but even than that's low
1. "Unusable" is relative. Depends on the person's needs and desires. 2. If you don't understand by now that their strategy has always been to entice people with a baseline price then rope them into upgrading to a higher one then I don't know where you've been for the past decade. That said, of course someone that wants this is likely better off getting the previous one for cheaper like Marques said...but my point still remains that some people's use case for a device is quite limited. Typical is irrelevant to an individual making the choice that's best for them.
It's a marketing strategy. The sweet spot is 128GB for most people, so they sell a 64GB version and a 256GB version with a much higher price. This makes the 256GB version a better deal in the mind of the consumers, because they get 4 times the storage for +200 USD
I love how Apple come up with a "brand new design" even though it looks exactly like the Microsoft Surface 1 which was released 10 years ago (2012) and who had the same camera on top, the same 64go, the stand directly included on the device and a keyboard attachment and even had an usb port.
After the reveal of the new iPad I wondered "This is a weird step backwards not having a laminated display and not supporting the second gen Apple Pencil", but never thought about it being because of the webcam housing until watching this. However, Apple being Apple, I have better faith that they would figure out how to make it work before putting something out that...doesn't make much sense. Who knows...
already got mine. really happy with it. I was coming from the 6th gen and wanted a good upgrade for note taking, media, etc. so it fit my needs. paired it with the Logitech Combo Touch and Crayon and it works perfectly fine
Interesting take on it. I came to the same conclusion when shopping for a replacement laptop for my sister. I ended up realizing that she could get a fully functioning laptop for the same price or less! And that's a Windows or Mac laptop... If the keyboard and upgrade to 256GB storage weren't so expensive, then it might make some sense as a mid-range iPad.
This is the anchoring effect. When you buy a 256G basic iPad, you think it's better to add some money to buy an iPad mini. After seeing the price of the large memory iPad mini, you think it's better to buy an iPad air and so on. Finally, you bought an iPad pro.That‘s why basic iPad is weird.

The iPad doesn't need hardware that powerful, right now it's bottlenecked by it's software. I agree because of the price range people will naturally opt for the Pro model rather than the basic Ipad tablet. The stage management (the ability to project to a bigger monitor) is useful. The ability to switch the keyboard to the side free of the keypad while holding it with your hands is innovative. Placing the front camera on the long side of the tablet appears to be useful and convenient for all situation like when video chatting.
I think a lot of people will buy these for their kids, kids usually have bulky cases for added protection, which eliminates the ability to charge an pencil 2. The pencil 1 makes sense for that reason. However many people already have a usb-c to thunderbolt cord for their iPhones charging. Apple blocked the ability to use this cable with the original thunderbolt dongle to pencil 1 with the iPad.

You're the first person I've seen to give a potential explanation as to why the Gen 2 pencil isn't supported, and it finally makes sense when I think about it as a direct compromise between the camera on the long edge and new pencil support (although it making sense doesn't quite make it any less annoying). No, no, no, it has to do with the technology. It might seem like a new iPad but it’s using previous hardware, that screen will not work with the 2nd gen newer pencil because it’s different technology. Older screen, older pencil. Personally I like the older pencil better, it has heft, weight. The newer model iPad Pros that work with the 2nd gen pencil, have a different kind of screen technology. Its an entirely new patent.
Now for a 3rd example, think of how Wacom tablets can use a pen that needs no battery power because the screen tech and pen use a sort of mesh and static. Its been a while i forget. But its a great video opportunity just waiting for someone to make interesting on how these three types of screens work with their type of stylus.

Watching this from my iPad Pro 3rd gen (12.9”, 1TB storage, a monster, and makes me not miss my laptop)…I bought it over 3 years ago, and have been using it almost daily since. I won’t need to be replacing it for atleast a few years. Also love the 2nd gen pencil, it still works perfectly. Only thing I need to replace soon is the keyboard folio.
I have an iPad Pro 2nd Gen (12.9") and I'm convinced everything is trying to tell me my iPad doesn't exist, but it's still new enough to get updates and be treated like it exists. I don't even know anymore man...

the ipad is also better for taking notes at university, writing with the pencil is so much better than using a laptop especially for maths, engineering etc but of course if you use an ipad you will also need a laptop for heavier stuff

Why didn’t you wait till the 4 mini wasn’t able to get updates anymore 15.7.2 update was literally just released and I found out there good till 16. Over all I thought my mini was finish when it comes to updates so I purchased the 10 and thought it was a piece of garbage so I took it back, as returning from the store I thought I’d check one last time to see if there was any update and holy crap 15.7.2 popped up, so over all I’m good for another year.

Short of having a gen 1.2 with a USB C charger to fit, an adapter is the easiest option

And for the people who already had Apple Pencil 1, they should have held an upgrade program for them to update to Apple Pencil 2 instead (like charging $30 bucks for upgrade, since Apple Pencil 2 costs $129 vs $99 for Apple Pencil 1), so everyone wins
The base ipad was always the #1 tablet I reccomended to anyone who asked because the value at the $329 price tag was impossible to beat. Now at $449 it's a much harder sell, and I hope they keep the "old case new chips" system like with the iphone SE around for it and just make it the iPad SE.
The iPad lineup is confusing enough. Please don't add any more complexity.

Great insight! I bought a 9th-generation iPad a week before the 10th was announced (my 7th-gen fell on a tile floor and smashed into a thousand pieces). Once I heard about the 10th-gen, I deliberately avoided torturing myself by looking at the tech that I barely missed out on. However, after watching this video and hearing your absolutely fair criticisms and questions, I don’t feel so bad anymore! 😀
I won’t lie, the webcam on the long side would be really helpful because I use my iPad (in landscape mode) for Zoom pretty regularly. I also don’t use an Apple Pencil, and I do have a USB-C charge cable already, so the 10th-gen would have some clear perks.
Still, I’m not super keen on the $100+ price bump, and I am utterly dependent on my iPad keyboard (I didn’t have to buy a new one because the 7th and 9th are the same dimensions). Given the huge price bump, I probably would’ve stuck with the 9th-gen anyway, so I feel good that I made the choice I did! 😀

I went with a last-gen ipad air, and feel much the same way. Hardly any improvements, and absolutely no sense of missing out on the cool new thing with it. My old ipad still does everything I need/want it to do, and does it as well as ever.

I just got the iPad 9th gen for school and I love it. Honestly for just taking notes and doing the basics, nothing more than the basic iPad is needed. I do like the design of the 10th gen, but at that point just get the iPad Air 4th gen.

Fun fact, in Indonesia there are many apple pencil “dupes” which offer palm rejection with prices as low as $15-20. They are shaped like the 2nd generation apple pencil, with magnetic sides and type c charging plus tilt sensitivity. You don’t have to pair anything either. If you double tap the pencil they’ll work straight away. The only downside is the pressure sensitivity and lower latency. In my opinion if you’re getting the base 10th gen ipad just for school and notetaking, the new squared bezel paired with apple pencil dupe will do wonders! Type c charging + magnetic attachment is something i’d die for. If you’re looking something for art might as well get an ipad air/pro. Just my thoughts 😊
the reason I got the new 2022 iPad instead of the last gen is for note-taking in school. The new screen without the home button seemed to work better as a "notebook", and I did not need the features of the iPad pro or air, which were both also out of my price range. I think in this aspect the new iPad excels, but I do agree that the whole apple pencil situation is very weird.

I was thinking of upgrading my 6th gen iPad to the 10th but after seeing it I think I'll go with the 9th. Even the Air was too expensive for me despite having the better specs.
The new iPad makes the 9th look dated, that home button with huge bezels has been there since the 1st gen. Not to mention the lightning port that will make it very dated when everything Apple sells is compatible with USB-C (except iPhones but it'll most likely be for the iPhone 15).

I got this iPad on sale to replace my 2012 iPad retina that had become too slow. I just want to read books, make notes, stream something, and doodle in some sketching apps. I won’t get those keyboard accessories or any of that. I’m happy with my 10th gen iPad.

I was looking forward to this one because I wanted to ditch my lightning cables, and for the easy USB-C to HDMI support (I'm a teacher so I need to quickly jack-into an A/V setup when I rush into a classroom with only 50 minutes of lecture time). The 64BG storage is even OK for me, as most of the presentations are on the cloud. In my current 6th Gen iPad I'm using only 44 out of 128 available GB. Also I'm in a country that borders China, so $10 knock-off versions of that keyboard and kickstand will probably be out soon enough.
But that price... hooooo doggies. Did I mention I'm a teacher?
[update] for those asking, I'm in Thailand. The salary is not that bad here, probably about the median for ASEAN countries. So yes I can afford an $800 iPad but... it's hard to pay that much when they've been running $350-$400 up till now. I could also afford to buy a $50 t-shirt and $75 pair of underwear but that doesn't mean I'm going to. I will most likely stay with my Gen 6 since it's working just fine.

True if you are talking about upgrading an entire fleet of iPads, but not true if you are adding additional iPads to the fleet and want to have that feature preserved while slowly migrating things over to USB-C. This is especially true in Europe where USB-C is the law of the land.

My dad who’s really techie and knows plenty more about Apple than me, asked me if it was worth to pick up the new one over an older gen or an older pro. I love my 11inch iPad Pro, it’s absolutely delightful for an in between a laptop and digital art tool. The newer pencil is also my major selling point.

1 people usually know what they want or have someone they ask for about upgrades.
2 Not everyone in the world speaks english, hence a lot of chinese, indian and spanish tech channels.

Right, being from Europe, the iPad prices are bit higher than those overseas, which I kind of get. However, 2 weeks ago I purchased an AiPad Air for €638 (including a teacher discount). Then this new "basic" iPad came out, and when I checked the same retailer's price of the Air including the discount, it said €722. And we are talking about the 64 GB version... They had to raise the price of the Air in order to make the base model worth buying. The base model should start at $399 at most.

I just got the iPad 9th Gen too, and I love it as my 3rd iPad. Sure the pricier models are nicer, but I know I don't need them, as I have a pretty good desktop PC and an old MacBook Pro for my creative stuff. Plus I've never understood the gripe about the bezels... Super thin bezels make sense on a monitor, or even a phone, but an iPad is larger and heavier - you need something to hold on to!
The iPad 9th Gen 10.2 will stand you in good stead for many years, my friend, and the base model is a steal at £319 here in the UK (Is it $399 in the US? Can't remember.) Just be frugal with apps as the 64GB storage can fill up fast with today's ridiculous app sizes.

I recently bought the iPad 10th gen with the Apple Pencil, from Best Buy and i bought the version with the adapter included with the Apple Pencil for the same exact price for just the Apple Pencil.
I can’t speak completely to how Marques Brownlee is doing financially, but I love how even with success, he is not losing touch with how the cost to this tablet to the average consumer is not a good price margin.

Once I saw the specs on this the first time, I compared it to my wife’s 2020 iPad Air and it’s about the same (difference being camera and pencil mainly). That gen sells for 469 at Walmart currently (if you can find it). I feel like for most you should just find a 4th gen iPad Air for a little more if you’re going to use a pencil. It’ll be far less frustrating for about the same price.
Biggest annoyance for me is the lack of a laminated display. What the heck?!

If the display was laminated there would be almost no differences between this and iPad Air so they gotta leave some features out for the iPad Air so it makes sense to buy it

Solution: just place the charging cutout a bit to the side and voila it works. Would need a new Apple Pencil though with the charging receiver not in the middle, so that it still attaches symmetrical to the side and leaves space for the camera on the long side…
But that’s up for next year I guess.

It sounds like Apple isn't really investing in the iPad design team. They've made a design that kinda works and they're done for a while. Now, for the next few years they just want to ride this wave and have an ipad at literally every possible price category to ensure that everyone with different budgets interested in an ipad has an ipad to buy. @@JonahNelson7 lowkey is, most tablets are used for services suchs as healthcare or clothing brands for checkups. Laptops blow out of the water tablets nowadays and theres even hybrid laptops that turn into tablets making the latter even more questionable to buy.
Im still using 7th gen and it works perfectly (no freeze or anything), i like the design more too and gen 1 pen is so ez to use, charging is super super fast so it hanging out from the charging port for a while doesnt concern me (not that i use my tablet for charging, there are outlets everywhere to do that) and i still have the parts of it from the og box cuz i use a offbrand keyboard that came with a magnetic case (i dont even know its brand lmao) that has little carvings for keeping those pieces. That keyboard was 300 turkish liras when i bought it, now its around 400-500 turkish liras so around 20 dolars but it works perfectly, also its adaptable for android and pc too. And I use logitech pebble cuz its super cheap and way better then og mouse. Also lets be honest we have apps like lumafusion that uses external storage (also premiere rush plans to add that feature and the app is free) to edit vids and safari to use shortcuts which when you add them they act like real apps and we have cloud storage (i use both icloud and g drive so i dont even need to pay for extra storage) so we dont really need a pc like storage. My ipad is 32gb yet even tho i have 4 games that are around 1-5gb and other apps (around 10 core apps like pages, collanote and etc.) that are around 100mb-1gb, i still have around 6gb storage left which allows me to edit small vids. Just learn how to handle the storage and use apple's office apps instead microsoft cuz they work with icloud. Drawing apps have no problem too, you can open almost infinite new tabs and etc.

If you want a similar case for the iPad Pro, there’s the logitech combo touch. Funny thing is, it’s literally the exact same case as what apple has released now for the baseline iPad. And did I mention the logitech is only $200?? I’ve been using it with my iPad Pro 2020 now for over a year and I love it. Additionally, no external charging or bluetooth connection is needed. The logitech case is actually endorsed by apple so it uses the smart 3 pin connector to work.

Ipads are great but man, ipads accessories are expensive as hell, but the logitech seems to be the only(?) keyboard that's using the 3pin connector instead of bt...
I have it, but the issue with that one is that it's not magnetic and it's made to be always attached (it's a hassle to remove it), and it you want to use the iPad without a case (as light as possible) it's not a great solution (maybe it's made for those who are always worried that they could break their iPad...)

The storage is really what I don’t understand, 64 gigs is insanely low almost unusable. Also, I like Apple‘s website basically tries to convince you to upgrade storage with the little note underneath it where it says to think long term.
Its marketing. Apple knows 64 is too low for anything. Thats why they have a more expensive version with more storage. They can use the low storage to market a lower price. Realistically most ppl will (idiotically) buy the more expensive ipad

I prefer it as a media consumption device because really we're not past that yet. And if you just use it for media, drawing, or gaming, or whatever less consuming activity you might do, 64 gb could be enough, but even than that's low
1. "Unusable" is relative. Depends on the person's needs and desires.
2. If you don't understand by now that their strategy has always been to entice people with a baseline price then rope them into upgrading to a higher one then I don't know where you've been for the past decade.
That said, of course someone that wants this is likely better off getting the previous one for cheaper like Marques said...but my point still remains that some people's use case for a device is quite limited. Typical is irrelevant to an individual making the choice that's best for them.
It's a marketing strategy. The sweet spot is 128GB for most people, so they sell a 64GB version and a 256GB version with a much higher price. This makes the 256GB version a better deal in the mind of the consumers, because they get 4 times the storage for +200 USD
Almost 13GB alone in OS and 10% reserve, bring you down to 50GB. What a joke when 128GB chip for them versus 64GB is probably less than $5 USD.

I love how Apple come up with a "brand new design" even though it looks exactly like the Microsoft Surface 1 which was released 10 years ago (2012) and who had the same camera on top, the same 64go, the stand directly included on the device and a keyboard attachment and even had an usb port.

After the reveal of the new iPad I wondered "This is a weird step backwards not having a laminated display and not supporting the second gen Apple Pencil", but never thought about it being because of the webcam housing until watching this. However, Apple being Apple, I have better faith that they would figure out how to make it work before putting something out that...doesn't make much sense.

already got mine. really happy with it. I was coming from the 6th gen and wanted a good upgrade for note taking, media, etc. so it fit my needs. paired it with the Logitech Combo Touch and Crayon and it works perfectly fine

Interesting take on it. I came to the same conclusion when shopping for a replacement laptop for my sister. I ended up realizing that she could get a fully functioning laptop for the same price or less! And that's a Windows or Mac laptop... If the keyboard and upgrade to 256GB storage weren't so expensive, then it might make some sense as a mid-range iPad.

This is the anchoring effect. When you buy a 256G basic iPad, you think it's better to add some money to buy an iPad mini. After seeing the price of the large memory iPad mini, you think it's better to buy an iPad air and so on. Finally, you bought an iPad pro.That‘s why basic iPad is weird.
While I agree, and thats absolutely the intent, once you get to those price levels, I feel like you'd be better off just getting a Macbook

The iPad doesn't need hardware that powerful, right now it's bottlenecked by it's software. It should be a fun device for playing around on and consuming media and they've turned them into these super expensive psudo-computers. FOR ME, I'd much rather just have a mac than that.

I agree because of the price range people will naturally opt for the Pro model rather than the basic Ipad tablet. The stage management (the ability to project to a bigger monitor) is useful. The ability to switch the keyboard to the side free of the keypad while holding it with your hands is innovative. Placing the front camera on the long side of the tablet appears to be useful and convenient for all situation like when video chatting.

I think a lot of people will buy these for their kids, kids usually have bulky cases for added protection, which eliminates the ability to charge an pencil 2. The pencil 1 makes sense for that reason. However many people already have a usb-c to thunderbolt cord for their iPhones charging. Apple blocked the ability to use this cable with the original thunderbolt dongle to pencil 1 with the iPad.
Still you can tell this Ipad is basically a money grab for Apple, they just know there are people foolish enough to get this
