The Pixies are very unique! A lot of the grunge 90s bands cite them as an influence. Some others of theirs that I really enjoy are "Debaser", "Where Is My Mind", and "Monkey Gone To Heaven".
Bowie was a big fan as he expresses at length in an interview worth watching, as is Radiohead who refused to let PIxies open for them at a festival, saying it should be the other way around. Would love see Alec Eiffel, UMass, Debaser... and more Breeders which was started by their bassist Kim Deals. You've reacted to Cannonball, and I'd follow up with Fortunately Gone, Doe, When I was a Painter...
The bass player is Kim Deal, who hails from my hometown of Dayton, Ohio. She still lives here. Kim and her sister Kelley Deal created the band The Breeders.
I'm so happy you both enjoyed this one! Their songs had a huge influence on the alt rock of the 90s. "Here Comes Your Man" & "Where is My Mind" are the two consistent hits, but also have to give a rec for the sincere "Letter to Memphis."

Nirvana, Weezer, and Radiohead were heavily influenced by the Pixies. The Pixies also have inspired many bands from the early 2000s as well such as Modest Mouse, Interpol, and Arcade Fire. They’re pretty much one first bands from the late 80s that set the tone for the 90s and early 2000s alternative bands. Kurt Cobain has even admitted that they tried copying what they were doing
It is fair to say without the PIXIES, we may have never had the Seattle Explosion and Grunge. These guys were one of Curt Cobain's favorites & one of mine as well. They are just so unique, there's really no one else quite like them. One of my favorite concerts was when I saw them as the opening act for U2 on their Achtung Baby tour. The Pump up the Volume version of their song "Wave of Mutilation," is Iconic & I've always loved their song "Here comes your man," as well.
Little fun fact for y’all the female back up vocals were done by the bassist Kim Deal who is the front woman for the the band The Breeders who y’all have done a reaction to a good while back. Next Pixies song to check out would be Dig a Fire, Gigantic, Monkey Gone to Heaven, and/or I Bleed

Im of the opinion that the pixies and r.e.m. single-handedly invented the 90’s ....kurt cobain LOVED the pixies; this song is super special bc its not exactly typical pixies, but at the exact same time it SOOOO pixies, NO body else could conceive of a song like this, theres no one like them before or since. & part of what makes those strange harmonies so special is kim deal, their amazing, unique female bassist who always takes their trademark high harmonies to a sublime place....now, “typical” pixies is what it is because of their unique way of alternating from verse to chorus back to verse in a loud/quiet way....many bands before them & even classical composers used loudness & then quietness to express something, but the way the pixies utilized it is pretty f’n special; its known as the “loud/quiet dynamic”....and thats really where kurt & nirvana got it from, thats why i say the pixies invented the 90’s....they are truly great, ive been listening to them for 32 years & i always come back to them....great reaction, more please, keep delving the pixies!
this girl's reaction was probably the best most real song reaction I've ever seen. If the guy didn't talk she probably wouldn't have said a word lol. Such a sick song
You two probably don't realize it, but almost a year ago you reacted to Cannonball by The Breeders which is a side project of the woman in the Pixies. It's odd how Kim's first album without The Pixies sold more copies than all of the albums she did with The Pixies combined.
Also, just FYI. I remember you guys reacted to Cannonball by the Breeders. Kim Deal, the lead singer of the Breeders was the bass player for the Pixies. You can hear her singing backup in the chorus on this song. She also handles lead vocals on some Pixies tracks, notably Gigantic. It’s one of my favorite Pixies songs.
Pixies are my favorite band. I'd love to know what you guys would think about their song "Caribou". That was the first song I ever heard by them and was like OMG I need more! Your reactions are so much fun, thanks!
When the Pixies broke up, bassist and backup singer Kim Deal formed a new group with her sister Kelley - The Breeders - and guitarist Frank Black became part of 10,000 Maniacs.
That awesome bass is played by Kim Deal, whose angelic voice is also in a load of Pixies songs. Very much recommended any track and sending big hugs 🤘❤️
Been waiting sooo long for you to get to The Pixies. I guess everyone will say to listen to "Where Is My Mind?" next, and that's a good one for ya. But my favorite songs that you may like too are "Caribou", "Gouge Away", and "No 13 Baby". Just so weird AND beautiful 💚
The Pixies were like Velvet Underground of the previous generation - not super well known at the time to the general public, very eclectic, but seemed to influence many of the major bands that came after.
You put it exactly right when you said ahead of their time. They were a major, major influence on 90s alternative music. They just came along a little too soon to get the public recognition that they deserved.
Check out the Pixie's song "DEBASER" --- another super weird/super catchy song with great scream-y vocals. Or "Here Comes Your Man" for a smoother song with Kim singing lead.
My very first concert with my friends at age 15 when they opened up for Love & Rockets in KC in 1989. I've seen them 5 more times after that and their live shows are really good.
OMG! Love and Rockets! I remember when the lead singer, David J, was in Bauhaus with Daniel Ash! (I would die if J&A listened to "So Alive" by L&R or "Get Out of Control" by Daniel Ash!)
@@Shrykespeare Or Sanity Assassin by Bauhaus, and Go! by Tones on Tail... Daniel Ash's side project before Love & Rockets. One of the most creative guitarists when you look at his entire catalogue. Up there with Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood.
@@csn10And don't get me started on Peter Murphy's stuff. "Cuts You Up" is still as great today as it was in 1990. "The Sweetest Drop" is also still a great listen.
@@Shrykespeare Love Peter's imagery, poetic lyrics, and vocals... with Bauhaus too of course, but his solo work is definitely more accessible musically for a first listen. I'll fall with your knife, Strange kind of love, Marlene Dietrich's favourite poem, and his Pere Ubu cover are to this day on heavy rotation.
thanks guys for basically welcome the beginning of the new era The Pixes were one of the pioneers of the 90S alternative rock although they were formed back in 1986 a year before Nirvana but a year after Radiohead
If you remember reacting to cannonball by the breeders, kim Deal who was the breeders lead singer, was also the original bass guitarist of the pixies. 🤘
If you ever build up enough interest for this group, there's a great documentary film about the band called "Loud Quiet Loud" (which is generally their metier in terms of how many of their singles progress. Old concert footage, their reunion at one of the Coachella shows, interviews with other musicians about how influential Pixies were.
Great to see you see you guys exploring the Pixies and you didn't even start with one of their more straightforward, accessible songs. BTW the thumbnail picture used for this video was not of The Pixies - it's actually a picture of the band Slowdive which incidentally would be a very interesting reaction since it opens up a whole category of alternative music know as 'Shoegaze'.
"Cool in a strange way" is a perfect description of Pixies. Definitely check out the other suggestions. They are a band with a unique sound, but also not one you can necessarily label.
Love that you guys are hearing Pixies for the first time. They were at the leading edge of "Alternative Rock" in the 80s and, as previously stated, a MAJOR influence on 90s Rock. They are known for their Loud-Quiet-Loud song structures & wildly quirky lyrics. Other songs worth hearing: Bone Machine, Velouria, Is She Weird, U-Mass, Planet of Sound, Subbacultcha, The Sad Punk
Frank Black is the lead singer. Two good songs are "Here Comes Your Man", and "where is my mind?" . The Deal sisters,in the band, went on to form the Breeders after the Pixies disbanded. You reacted to their song "Cannonball" a while back
They are basically one of the godfathers of grunge. Tho nirvana, Alice In Chains, soundgarden, Pearl Jam are the ones accredited, it’s the pixies, sonic youth, violent femmes, etc that influenced(heavily) the bands that became known for starting grunge.
Awesome choice! Such a great band. From them we got Kim Deal and the Breeders and also the Amps. Then we got Black Francis and the Catholics. Then there's Pigface. I personally love them, but it is highly subjective, lol.
That's the one and only legend, KIM DEAL on bass. Thanks for reacting to my favorite band. Check out 'Wave of Mutilation' or 'Velouria' or 'Where is My Mind' or 'Gigantic' enjoy.
OK, so... once you get that thumbnail picture changed to the ACUTAL Pixies, we can talk about this band. That bass is being played by Kim Deal, and she was regarded as one of the best bass players in America at that time. She's also the backing vocalist. This is a band from the '80s, but they were harbingers of the sounds of grunge in the '90s. The lead singer, Frank Black / Black Francis, and Kim didn't (and do not) get along very well, and that strife led to the breakup of the band. They got back together, but it didn't last, and Deal eventually just left the band for good. They never had a huge hit song on the Billboard charts, but they were very influential with other bands that did make hit records, particularly Nirvana. I'm just going to list my favorite Pixies songs, starting with the "poppiest" one they ever made: "Here Comes Your Man" "Gigantic" "Monkey Gone To Heaven" "Wave Of Mutilation" "Debaser" "Allison" "Dig For Fire" "Gouge Away" "I Bleed" "Is She Weird?" "Tame" "Silver" and an absolutely awesome song that appeared in the film 'Fight Club,' "Where Is My Mind?" That oughtta give you a good feel for Pixies. That entire album ("Doolittle") is amazing.
Never heard this before, either. The 1990s is my 30s, so too much life to keep up with new bands. I like the music a lot. The vocalist might take a couple of listens, but not bad. I heard alternative music like this in the early 1980s. For post-punk late 1970s alternative, try Joy Division "Love Will Tear Us Apart". A hit in the UK, on college stations only in the USA. After their lead singer committed suicide, they added a new member and became alternative dance band New Order. Huge in the UK, but a few hits in the USA too.
Pixies were a game changer for Kurt Cobain, and many up and coming grunge artists. I personally would’ve chosen another song to start your journey. “Monkey Gone to Heaven “ “Gouge Away” “#13” “Debaser” “Gigantic” “Here Comes Your Man” “La La Love You” “Into the White” Hope you check out a couple & enjoy!
I never heard this song before, thanks for introducing me to it! I get a cross between The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground and The Violent Femmes.
A weird but cool vibe pretty much sums up Pixies. You guys have gotten so good at picking up on details and influences. Amber, you're right on the💲about the indie alternative sound. A number of artists from 90s alternative bands cite them as an influence, especially Kurt Cobain.
YES!,,finally playing a great band!! Check out Kim and Kelly deal’s band. The Breeders-Cannonball Kim and Kelly deal are sisters Pixies guitar and bass
I've always liked such a wide variety of music I never thought I could definitely say that one band was my all-time favorite, but that was the designation I bestowed on the Pixies years ago. Pixies are the best! Joey Santiago's lazy and crazy guitar solo here is an all-time classic, as is Kim Deal's naked basslines. As for the strain on Charles' (aka Black Francis) voice: Wait 'til you hear some of their other hits. "Gouge Away" "Debaser" "UMass". There's even a little grit in the mellow masterwork of Where is my Mind."
One of the great albums from beginning to end. There Goes my Gun is one of my favorites from this Album . The whole album is amazing. Of course my favorite from them is Where is my Mind
Never give up on the pixies! I listened to them on a worn out cassette on a Walkman at 11 years old and this album (bosanova) blew my mind and inspired so many great bands like Nirvana etc. ❤
I had to look this one up - it was off of Doolittle, which came out in 1989. I've heard this before, but never on the radio. Interesting song to start with, but definitely a rabbit hole worth diving into. "Monkey Gone to Heaven" is the one I remember most, as well as "Here Comes Your Man", "Velouria", and "Letter to Memphis". They also did a great cover of "Head On", but I think you should react to the original version of that song by Jesus And Mary Chain first. That is an 80s alternative CLASSIC.
My favorite Pixies quote went something like. "Not many people had a Pixies album while growing up but everyone who did started a band"
That’s what they used to say about folks who saw The Sex Pistols
Formed in the 80’s. It still cranking out bad ass tunes today. One of the all time greatest bands ever.

You can hear her singing backup in the chorus on this song. She also handles lead vocals on some Pixies tracks, notably Gigantic. It’s one of my favorite Pixies songs.
The Pixies discography is incredible. I still haven't been able to get "Where is My Mind" off my playlist for the past three decades.
Maybe because it is wayyy out in the water; see it swimming... ; )
@@Mertztillithurts Your head will collapse

@@datkat6032 Where is my mind?
Pixies are my favorite band. I'd love to know what you guys would think about their song "Caribou". That was the first song I ever heard by them and was like OMG I need more! Your reactions are so much fun, thanks!
When see a group like they are sound track for movies and tv video games transporting
When the Pixies broke up, bassist and backup singer Kim Deal formed a new group with her sister Kelley - The Breeders - and guitarist Frank Black became part of 10,000 Maniacs.
Frank Black was not part of 10,000 Maniacs. He recorded several solo albums after the Pixies split.
@@thisnicelady You are correct, 73 year old memory at work
So ahead of their time, 80's band but sounds like 90's, they influenced so many bands Nirvana included
Kim Deal's killer bass line here is so fun to play. The Pixies had so many excellent songs -- welcome to the rabbit hole!
I think we just found two new Pixies fans! They are different, but in a very good way.
Their best is Gouge Away.
They influenced Nirvana, with the soft and loud approach
Pixies ROCK!
That awesome bass is played by Kim Deal, whose angelic voice is also in a load of Pixies songs. Very much recommended any track and sending big hugs 🤘❤️
this is so surreal...this song is like 30 years old?? i was a fan back in the day, I played in bands back then...omg what happened to the time??
YEAH!!!! FOR more great Pixies check out "Where Is My Mind", "Vamos" or "Caribou".
Here we go. Now we’re talking.
I saw them play the GA Theater in Athens, GA in 1991. Awesome concert. I'm glad you guys are giving them a listen.
This is one of my favorite songs!
Ok now hit “Debaser”, Gouge away, Gigantic, Tame, wave of Mutilation. Bangers!
My favorite band. Btw, the photo isn’t of the band 😀 You can deep dive Pixies albums and you’ll see why they’re so influential.
Great comments below! All great choices, they had bigger songs than "hey" but I love it and was glad you picked it!
The Pixies are so classic and their sound was so unique. Loved this era of music because there was so much diversity and artistic freedom.
My very first concert with my friends at age 15 when they opened up for Love & Rockets in KC in 1989. I've seen them 5 more times after that and their live shows are really good.
Wow! Haven't heard Love & Rockets mentioned in few moons. Still have one of their CD's and some Pixies on an old MP4 player from back in the day.
This is RIGHT UP THERE with any ROLLING STONES song, REAL smoky bar room vibe, Channeling Mick Jagger there....
Other songs worth hearing:
Bone Machine, Velouria, Is She Weird, U-Mass, Planet of Sound, Subbacultcha, The Sad Punk
Subbacultcha is one of my shortlist Pixies favorites, rarely cited by others. This song just tickles me to no end.
Frank Black is the lead singer. Two good songs are "Here Comes Your Man", and "where is my mind?" . The Deal sisters,in the band, went on to form the Breeders after the Pixies disbanded. You reacted to their song "Cannonball" a while back
The lead singer Frank Black did some great solo work as well. Check out his song "Los Angeles."
Wave of Mutilation is a good Pixies song to check out. You have heard the bassist before - Kim Deal and her twin were the front women for the Breeders
The Pixies are so damn good!
Never heard of them Nor this song
But I'm a 60's 70's man
OK, so... once you get that thumbnail picture changed to the ACUTAL Pixies, we can talk about this band.
I'm just going to list my favorite Pixies songs, starting with the "poppiest" one they ever made: "Here Comes Your Man" "Gigantic" "Monkey Gone To Heaven" "Wave Of Mutilation" "Debaser" "Allison" "Dig For Fire" "Gouge Away" "I Bleed" "Is She Weird?" "Tame" "Silver" and an absolutely awesome song that appeared in the film 'Fight Club,' "Where Is My Mind?"
That oughtta give you a good feel for Pixies. That entire album ("Doolittle") is amazing.
Pixies! You might check out some of their other vibes on "Where Is My Mind" and "Monkey Gone To Heaven."
“Monkey Gone to Heaven “
“Gouge Away”
“#13”
“Debaser”
“Gigantic”
“Here Comes Your Man”
“La La Love You”
“Into the White”
Hope you check out a couple & enjoy!
Here comes your man or where is my mind wouldve been perfect but, Hey is one of my favorites so i'm not hatin
The Pixies (and YES you can say "the") were a game changer for everyone.
@@gigistephens4633 i really love UMASS! that rocked!
That’s a good list
@@gaussshawn Thank ya! 🤘🏽
The Deals, Breeders, so much talent
I never heard this song before, thanks for introducing me to it! I get a cross between The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground and The Violent Femmes.
What a great description, yeah, I can see that.
I thought it was just me that got The Rolling Stones vibe 🤭
A weird but cool vibe pretty much sums up Pixies. You guys have gotten so good at picking up on details and influences. Amber, you're right on the💲about the indie alternative sound. A number of artists from 90s alternative bands cite them as an influence, especially Kurt Cobain.
YES!,,finally playing a great band!! Check out Kim and Kelly deal’s band. The Breeders-Cannonball Kim and Kelly deal are sisters Pixies guitar and bass
pixies are soooo amazing you have no frickin idea!!!! please continue this path
You may be ready for Sonic Youth - "Bull In The Heather". Maybe.
this is Paraphrased. but Kurt Cobain of Nirvana pretty much said that Nirvana wouldn't have been without The Pixies
Pixies aren’t for everyone. ‘Where is my Mind’ is good one by them I think you’d like: it is on ‘Fight Club’ which is a movie you should check out.
One of my all time favorite bands! Glad you guys got a chance to check them out. Great song to start!
🤘😎🤘
