Pixies are Nirvana, Radiohead, The Smashing Pumpkins, and Weezer’s biggest influence. A lot of bands were influenced by them. Pixies were the pre cursor of what was to come in 90s and early 2000’s alternative rock and grunge. Pixies were way ahead of their time. Kurt Cobain even said that they were trying to copy them

The best description of The Pixies.
"I discovered a band that changed my life. Then they broke up."
I used to work at a Lazer Tag joint (Q-Zar) in the early 90's. One of my regulars slipped me The Pixies 'Dolittle'..
The next day, I bought all their CDs.
The Pixies are on another level.

!!!!! I never thought you guys would do the Pixies! I figure you would hate it and not even remotely understand why they were so big in the alternative music scene. Normally you are my hero, Lex. But today Brad is my main man! I thought for sure you would hate his high whiny voice, laugh. The first time I ever heard a Pixies song was in the mid 80s. I was out at the lake getting a nice little buzz on with a friend listening to a cassette in his car that he had made of The Replacements. But there was a little room at the end so he put the song Elevator Lady at the end. And I didn't know it was coming and suddenly there's this wall of sound with this high screechy voice but the lyrics were intriguing and hilarious and I loved the feel of it. Immediately went out and bought their first two albums which one of them was an EP anyway called Come On Pilgrim. I immediately fell in love with them.
In addition to the influences listed below, they also state that the Beatles were a heavy influence along with Nirvana and the others and I can hear that. And don't forget that the bass player Kim Deal really has a beautiful voice and she sings some of them and does beautiful descant harmonies on others. And not only that, Black Francis can also sing quite beautifully in his lower range. In fact once the Pixies broke up, Black Francis reverted back to his real name Frank Black and had a very successful solo career and some of that music is incredible. Similarly, Kim Deal went off and started the Breeders and they were a very successful band. I saw Pixies live multiple times back in their heyday, as well as the two of them during their respective later careers Fantastic show.
On some of their earlier albums, you get to hear just some verbal ad-libbing and messing around between the two of them and it is absolutely hilarious. They are very very funny. I would also say that this is earlier Pixies and album-by-album, it's the same sound in the same feel and the same humor but their sound did get more polished and more lush and perhaps a bit more melodic so there is a wide range to choose from. But from the early stuff, you have to hear the song Gigantic. It features Kim on lead vocals and it's so fun. Also Caribou. They also do a quiet melancholy one which is absolutely beautiful and it's their cover of another band's song called Wave of Mutilation. The one off the album is faster and heavier but they did a slow atmospheric version for the soundtrack of the movie Pump Up the Volume with Christian Slater. It is so dreamy and haunting. In some sense though, Elevator Lady remains my favorite because it's the first one I ever heard and it literally blew my mind. I had absolutely no idea what I was listening to and we were listening to it at ear bleeding levels.

I love the Pixies, probably more than any of those bands previously mentioned but they are not directly responsible for alternative rock. An important band and had a big influence on 90s alternative rock but they were not directly responsible for it, many bands played a part in influencing alternative rock in the 90s and beyond.

      Did they influence Dinosaur Jr,Sonic Yourh,'Husker Du,Big Black,Mudhoney,The Replacements?

With the Pixies they write some great alt pop songs with dark lyrics but then they can also write some off the wall songs. Monkey Gone to Heaven and Here comes your man are more immedicably accessible, Gigantic is fun while Alec Eiffel is more straight forward alt/rock.

Pixies, THERE is a rabbithole for you! Everything is totally different for them. They are all over the place. The music is killlllllllller. They're in the rare air of bands like Pink Floyd -- there's just no one like them and they are so inspirational for so many musicians because they broke so many molds. Genres like lo-gi, grunge, grunge-rock, garage rock, alternative, new wave -- the Pixies are considered seminal to them all. You create a pyramid of bands that influenced the most musicians, and the Pixies are gonna be up at the top, above REM, above Nirvana, above so many others that came in the '90s and thereafter.
Just a few to dabble in:

The Pixies come from Boston. I was playing in a band in Boston at the same time as the Pixies...in the mid 80's. Nobody had ever heard of them and then all of a sudden they were the biggest thing ever. Here's how it happened. They got signed to an Indy label in England (4AD) and then their album ended up in the "Imports" bin at the record stores in Boston. It was very "cool" at the time to buy imports. Knowing all the latest underground British bands was important to anyone in the Boston "scene"...so people would always check out the imports section of the record store. Anyway, the Pixies got marketed as an "import" in the stores, rather than a "local" band, and then the local music magazines picked up on them and told us they were the best thing ever. But before that, if you had looked in the local club listings to see who was playing around Boston...you'd never see The Pixies. Like I said, those of us in the live music scene had never heard of them. Nobody had ever done a show with them. Nobody ever saw them live. They came out of nowhere. Then all of a sudden...they were a "Boston Band". It was weird.

It's all about balance. If the song is a regular song Lex will say it reminds her of the bubbles when you open a can of Coke. If the song is weird she'll say she likes the bass. You can't have chaos on both ends.
Speaking of chaos, Brad, if you liked this weirdness then you're ready to go further into the rabbit hole. You guys should react to "Vamos". You're ready.

Saying how the Pixies can make normal songs but then undo those songs to make "Hey" shows they are super talented also applies to visual artists like Picasso, the Abstract Expressionists, and Warhol. All of them could produce "normal" art at a high level but they then broke down that process to create something new and different.

Pixies, oh man, what a band. Back in 1991, in Glasgow's SECC venue, the gig had to be abandoned during Debaser (just the third song in) due to the enthusiastic crowd breaking the barrier in front of the stage. Great support from Cud and Teenage Fanclub, thankfully.

Pixies is probably the most influential alternative bands. When asked about “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, Kurt Cobain said “I was just trying to rip off the Pixies”. He wasn’t joking. If you listen to the Pixies song “Debaser” you can hear the guitar riff from Smells Like Teen Spirit all the way through the song.

  • @JayPhonomancer

The great thing about the Pixies is that some songs of them sounds like you heard before cause all the influence they had in all the grunge/alternative music in the 90s, 00s.
Try Caribou, Debaser, Monkey Gone to Heaven, Gouge Away, Gigantic. They had a bunch of classics

YEAH YEAH YEAH!! "Hey" is such a mindblowingly quirky cool ass song - especially that lead guitar part (siren sound)....gouge away is my fav of the pixies but where is my mind, hey, tame, please don't go, monkey gone to heaven are total vibes songs! I got too see the pixies in Louisville, KY (Kim deal) was still with them back in 2012 but I really wished I could have seen them in the late 80s or early 90s tho!! If you got time another grunge classic from the 90s that you all would enjoy I think would be....local H - bound for the floor.

Pixies redeemed the 80's, music bloomed into Grunge and pop-punk from here, the guy with the top comment mentioned, a few (British) bands were influenced to form bands by attending Pixies concert I know that at least two members of Blur went to the first night and secured tickets for the next night. Different guys from Radiohead may have attended both, I can't remember and can't be bothered googling it! Special mention to Husker Du for sparking the Pixies idea in Charles and Joey's minds!

Pixies were Gen X alternative rock music 😃. We loved em. They along with groups like Sonic Youth (female and male singers like Pixies), B-52s ( same, female and male singers), Dinosaur JR, RHCP, Jane's Addiction/Pornos for Pyros, , Smithereens, Pavement, REM, Violent Femmes, Joy Division ('late '70s- early '80s), 1000 Maniacs, Mudhoney, The Replacements, The Cure, Ween, etc. All alternative rock in the '80s and '90s. And ahead of their time, influenced many alt rock bands in the '90s and '00s. Back in the days was called college radio, modern rock, alternative. Music like this was only played on college radio back then and videos on MTV segment called 120 Minutes ( alternative music videos for 2 hrs) late at nite, finally broke into mainstream radio from underground, college radio around the late '80s - early '90s . Loud/quiet dynamics from groups like Pixies, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur JR, etc were huge influences for alternative rock in the future. Including Weezer, Cake, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse and many others. lol. Early Nirvana years, they toured woth Pixies often. Cobain loved them. 🎸. I could see why Brad likes alt and Indie rock. Lol. Punk rock too. Can picture him playing their music. The Pretenders were alternative rock, new wavish in the 70s and 80s, made mainstream success in the '80s. I was a teen during the early '90s, remember all of this.
Pixies are a surf punk, indie/alternative rock band. See their songs "Gouge Away", "Gigantic", "Caribou", "Debaser" , " No13 Baby", and "UMass" too. Kim Deal (bass guitarist and co-singer) left the band and started The Breeders in the '90s. They were good in the '90s and '00s. Yall have reacted to their song "Cannonball"already, need to see more of their songs like "Saints", "Safari", "Divine Hammer", "Son of Three", etc.
