Agreed. Breaking it out into this format will let them do all sorts of things. They could get their guests to do a few at the in person PPRs when civilization reasserts itself.
I heard "Crack-a-pack backlog" and my immediate thought was "crack-a-packlog". I feel like I should both thank and blame Graham for my affinity for portmanteau
@@TLG1255 I started to design a "what do you mean, when you say color identity?" cube a while back and I think Lifetap was one of the cards that would get you into Izzet Lifegain. It had Dream Trush and Phantasmal Terrain as enablers... Well, if you go against the Orzhov Mill deck, or Rakdos defenders it's probably good enough.
@@bondeulv I abandoned the project quite some time ago, because I couldn't come up with good archetypes for Selesnya, Simic and Golgari, the ones I had with enough cards to go "that could actually make a deck" were Azorius burn, Orzhov Mill (mainly white Fogs and black "search the opponents library" cards, though some mono black Dimir cards mill outright), Broros reanimator (potentially the broken deck with Rally), Izzet Lifegain, Rakdos defenders (With Vent sentinel the obvious star of the show) and Gruul Skies (plenty of insects and baby dragons). The last time I really looked at that was after Battle for Zendikar got released, so my memory if a bit foggy.
I am so pleased these are still continuing. I just came across this particular LRR series and I am obsessed with the casual enthusiasm that is very calming. There is excellent background music chosen through series that contributes to its compelling calm.
I consider it commander playable too, it lets you view anyone's top three and if need be, ruin their topdeck stack. Or use it on yourself to see what your next three are and shuffle if you don't like it.
Showing the time of recording pricing for the cards is what sold me on this being a great video. As a regular viewer of LRRMTG content, I was already on board, but that foil mythic rare inclusion of pricing is what got me. Definitely can see this being a regular series.
Also, getting a revolving door of people cracking packs would a fun way to change it up in this series. Like, have people pick packs from sets that they'd like to crack, and set up a queue. I can see Cam choosing something like Fifth Dawn or Guildpact. Adam would probably choose Khans of Tarkir or Strixhaven. Something with Black/Green representation. So on and so forth. I personally think it would be a super neat take on this style of cracking packs.
I like the intention of this video. Usually these unpacking videos are just dull summaries of the cards contained. Here it is more a calm journey with anecdotes. A quite nice way of doing it. I like it !
fun note: enervate is to weaken, INNERVATE is to strengthen (ok, not directly. its to supply with nerves, but WoW has kinda changed the meaning). so yeah, english is whack
Now I finally understand why the Guild Wars 1 skill Enervating Charge, which inflicts Weakness on its target, has that name. Oh, English. Why you gotta be this way?
If I had any say in MTG card design or naming, I'd have card printed with "flammable" in the name (like "Flammable Tinder", for example), and an identical card printed in a later or the same set, using "inflammable", perhaps with different art or flavor text but identical functionality. Because English is silly and we should lean in to the literary jokes to get back at Japan for all their clever wordplay that doesn't translate well.
Portent is actually pretty good. Of course, it would have been a lot better as an instant, but as a one mana cantrip, it's actually useful, in that it can help you dig three cards deep into your deck and rearrange them, or just screw over your opponent by forcing a shuffle.
I think this series is a fantastic idea to catch up on the backlog, or maybe even as a shorter form of regular content. Really enjoying the series so far, as well!
This was fun. It'd be cool to have different LRR members pick a pack to open, and have a little tidbit beforehand of why they chose that specific pack.
I've been watching LoadingReadyRun since 2006? Something like that. I think I still have a 1337 on my phone and used to watch the old skits at least once a week. Thanks to you I started playing MTG. I'm more than happy to just watch you opening some packs and having fun. Take care!
Also I REALLY like this new series! Fantastic and creative way to get that backlog cleared, and I like the added polish that doing a dedicated episode brings.
@ 3:30 I have it in an old "Weenie Blaster" deck which I guess is vintage now? I have it along side Fireballs, Disintegrates, and mana ramp. If life is a resource, why wouldn't you want more of it to use?
I absolutely love the "prop card up for closeup" thing y'all are doing. I'm sure it's 100% more work compared to card image from scryfall on screen but it's boosted the production value but at least 500%!
(3:31) Yes I actually put it in my Zaxara, the Exemplary deck. I figure I could gain life and get a creature on the board. There's some tinkering and that I have to do but the the deck has about 25 X sorcery spells.😀
one of the things I thought was cool in the olden days of the podcast was the random selection of the packs (back before the backlog became so incredible). I would enjoy again seeing some sort of "how or why we decided on this pack for this" for future content, even if it's just 'I felt like opening this for this video'
Trivia time! Mons's Goblin Raiders is named after Mons Johnson, a developer at Wizards (at least at some time), who was greatly fond of goblins. Cf. Mark Rosewater's Making Magic article "Mons Made Me Do It" from 2002.
This is pure nostalgia. I started in fourth edition and most of the packs I bought before I stopped playing were from 5th Edition, Mirage block and Tempest Block.
I like it, do more :) Having someone to talk with about what you open always leads to fun discussions on TTC, but that might make you run longer than you’re aiming for. So I guess you could just have Beej as your cohost for these.
6:38 Lifetap Me: _"That's amazing and only bb. Time to make all lands also Forests and drain/buff per tap/un-tap-tap."_ Graham: _"That's, quite bad."_ Me: oh.
I honestly wasn't sure how this could take almost 9 minutes without feeling drawn out, but you did it! I enjoyed the pacing-it didn't drag nor did it feel like you ignored cards. :) I also enjoyed the overall presentation, making each card feel important for its moment. The value calculation at the end was also a welcome touch. I do agree with another comment I saw that the number of zoom cuts was a bit jarring at times.
First MTG cards I ever opened was a 5th Edition Starter box (essentially 3 boosters a mini-rulebook and some lands). I got a Ball Lightning and it pretty much changes to entire course of my life in ways I could never predict.
This is the first set that 'changed everything' new artwork for reprints, I think some rarity shifts and I believe first time they took lightning bolt out of rotation.
This is real neat! I'd maybe see if in the future there can be a cohost or multiple pack openings just to beef the video out a little more, but as a chill single-pack video it was still a fun watch
Orcish Artillery was actually a good card back in these days. Especially in Sealed Deck. Fireball gets amazingly complicated when you try to use it for anything except "x to the face. Kill you." "Color hosers" like Gloom or "land hosers" like Lifetap used to be strong sideboard cards back in the day, since the vast majority of decks were either monocolored or a "base" color with one secondary color. As maindeck cards, they were, of course, horrible, but as sideboard cards they were brutally strong against the decks they wanted to target.
Official submission of "Pack-log" for the accepted portmanteau of the show.
Pack-log. Yes! thats it!
What about the 'ack a 'ack 'ack log

I too feel excited about this content, and my associated engagement with it as a viewer!
I like the idea of getting short and simple Crack-a-packs every so often
somehow even the shortest ideas end up as ordeals.
Tune in next week for Pack-a-Krak, when Beej attempts to ship a kraken to Abu Dhabi.

see, i went to "Cracklog" and immediately Agreed with Graham.

This was nice. A sneak peek on how the pack is chosen would be cool.
Didn't Graham just say "we're starting with an old pack"?
Agreed!
i seen them roll a d20 before

Greetings back to you, good sir! Thanks for the pack opening video!
the editing (zooms in particular) are great. they help keep focus and add energy to what is inherently a low energy event.
Thanks!
I love the idea that you’ll eventually crack at least one pack from every person that’s given you a pack. Shows how far reaching magic is.
Really enjoyed the one-off crack-a-pack, as well as the value breakdown at the end. Fingers crossed we get new ones periodically!
Currently: Twice a week.
I like this! Makes me reappriciate that with good production value even a "simple" concept like this is entertaining and worthwhile.
I appreciate the barely contained laughter before "No I'm not taking that shot again".
I would always watch TTC just for the crack-a-packs, so this content is perfect for me. I love it.
