Toshiba TDDP5012ES2 Dehumidifier Failure - Ice Buildup in Summer

  • Dehumidifier stopped working within a year, but it took me a month to notice it. Customer service said that it should be defrosted for 24 hours, but it just frosted up again. The only condensate that it produces is the melted ice, which leaks out the back when there's a lot of it. Multiple reviews on the Home Depot website complain of the same early failure.

    To disassemble, the key is to: remove the bucket, remove the two screws that hold the bottom of upper cover, slide that cover up and remove it. Remove the remainder of 9 screws and lift the complete shell off the top. The display has a ribbon connector plug. Hope this helps.

    My model TDDP7011Es2 just started doing this about a month ago. Luckily, I got 4years and 9 months of operation from it. Every other brand I had prior to this one only lasted approximately 2 years, so this one has been the most reliable.

    Yep, same problem here. Mine froze after about 18 months of use. I have no idea what to do with now, I guess I'll have to buy another one. I'll never buy anything from Toshiba again. If they were smart, they'd allow people to replace the refrigerant using widely available vehicle A/C rechargers, but it's 2023 so the manufacturers love to build stuff they know will fail so we have to buy another one. I agree with other posters, this should be reported to a consumer protection agency, but I doubt they'll do anything.

Buy cheap and toss them when they quit. Yeah you can rip them all A part, dink around, and get it working again but your time is worth something.

      It’s most likely the government regulations that are causing manufacturers to cut corners. I have a commercial refrigerator that “runs” on propane and it’s dead because 4oz of propane can’t handle what 2-4lbs of r12 can🤬🤬🤬 so think of the waste in manufacturing and the environmental impacts of producing so much junk🤔

    Ours lasted exactly 2 years before it stopped dehumidifying. The coil is icing half way up, due to low refrigerant from a leak. New cost was $229 from Home Depot. Original mfg warranty is 1 year. We paid for the "Home Depot Protection Plan by Allstate". A two year extended warranty cost an additional $35, resulting in three years total coverage. We'll see if the warranty is any good; they have the option to repair, replace or refund. It's a waste and an environmental disaster that dehumidifiers aren't more reliable. Or repaired.
    Follow up, after attempts to resolve this online, my wife called in. They are sending us a Home Depot card covering the cost of the unit. We get to keep the old one as a paper weight. I rate Toshiba's quality as poor. I rate the Home Depot Protection Plan as fair, their online claims system doesn't work. This is a wasteful business model.

    The green stuff you see is corrosion and refrigerant loss. Its dead; low refrigerant causes the coils to free, the sensor will trip (you hope) and then the cycle repeats.

    Since this video isn’t much help and finding the problem I thought I’d share my leading theory and how I solve it,
    Basically when water constantly flows in something and doesn’t get cleaned, it’ll experience bacterial growth and you might have a bunch of dust and hair mixed with it that will stick to the fins and tubes where the water flows, if you never washed the bottom of your bucket you’ll see what I’m talking about, there’s gonna be a bunch of mucus like slime stuck to the bottom, so since it does that inside the dehumidifier and fins, the water flow will slow and be in contact with the metal for too long and will start frosting causing the whole thing to just stop flowing
    So what I’ve done to fix the issue is that every few months (of daily use in my case) I remove the filter, bucket and end cap and I put my dehumidifier in the tub, using a spray bottle or the shower head on the most powerful setting I spray the fins pointing down so water doesn’t splash everywhere inside and I usually see a bunch of sludge just falling off all the fins, you might want to use something like a straw cleaner or toothbrush to clean the insides of the tubes that drains the water and the fins, obviously I then let it sit for a while to make sure it’s dry before plugging it back and turning it on just in case water splashed on anything sensitive, although I doubt it does because it’s meant to take on water but an abundance of precautions doesn’t hurt
    Usually after doing this the problem goes away for a while

    I had the same problem. I had already read these portable dehumidifiers fail rapidly and therefore purchased the extended product protection for $30. Failed 3 months out of warranty and the protection plan got me a full refund. I figure $30 for a year of use is somewhat fair. I’f love to know what causes the failure. If its the fan relay or compressor capacitor. I’d really love to try to fix my unit rather than trash it.

    • @thomasseibold4055
      @thomasseibold4055 Рік тому +4

      Everything I see indicates coil icing is (ironically) due to low refrigerant from a leak. When this happens with your central AC, a tech can add more coolant. When it happens with a portable dehumidifier, it becomes scrap metal. Planned obsolescence, sadly.

Avec un jet d'air, envoie de l'air sur tout le mécanisme de refroidissement (serpentins). Dans mon cas, il y avait un peu de poussière et poils de chiens. Ça a réglé mon problème heureusement. Bonne chance!

    Toshiba isn't the only brand with these issues, since I've experienced short life on three prior dehumidifiers in 6 years. No extreme temperature etc where its used in my well insulated cellar. Toshiba had decent reviews (until now) so I gave it a chance. The icing up on mine only occurs on the inlet pipe before the coils as if a blockage is present or is it low on refrigerant??

      This is a case of where the refrigerant has leaked out or is almost completely gone out of the system. Had dehumidefier like this but branded Pelonis. Lasted about 6 months before failure. Had this exact same issue. Based on future research, this unit along with other brands (Perfect Aire, Pelonis, Homelabs) are made by Midea over in china. Midea has had some good equipment when others have failed but it seems even there equipment can’t be trusted much anymore.

      I am not sure there's much of a correlation between price and longevity. I've owned at least 4 of these, and my experiences were:
      1. Failed with compressor not starting at beginning of second summer, just after warranty ran out 😠
      2. Bought an extended 3-year warranty, failed after two summers of operation. Got a new one for free! 😄
      3. Decided to risk it and go without an extended warranty. So far it's almost done with 4th summer. 😄
      4. Decided to risk again and go without an extended warranty. Failed with frost accumulation before end of second season, just over a year after warranty expired.😠
      Besides the cost, annoyance when it malfunctions, a third major issue is that these things are hard to throw away. I wonder if Home Depot will accept it back.

    REMOVING COVERS: I see several comments asking for disassembly help for removing the covers, and I wondered the same thing (for this exact same model). There are nine screws visible around the back and bottom-sides of the unit, but those seem superfluous. After an hour of pinched fingers and using several screwdrivers for leverage and prying, I can tell you that there are three locking tabs on each side that are molded parts of the front and back covers, and one in the center of the top, just behind the control panel.
    Even once those are released, there are two blind screws under the control panel that go through both the front and back cover (one of which also goes through the interior chassis). I ended up breaking off the flanges from the back cover for these two screws, but even on close inspection I see no way to have reached them once the unit was assembled. I strongly suspect that these units were never intended for service, but instead for quick assembly, as it seems necessary to break the covers in order to remove them.

    • @MarshallDudley
      @MarshallDudley 2 місяці тому

      You can get to those screws by removing the filter. Then remove the two screws holding the black filter box, and slide it up and off. That will open up the area above the two screws. I have gotten that far but still don't have it off yet.

      The cause of this, as seen exactly in this video, is low refrigerant. You can tell by how the ice forms at the bottom and works it way up along the path of the tube. And that seems to be the #1 reason of these Toshiba failures. They suddenly develop refrigerant leaks.
      There is no easy solution to this unless you know how to precision weld and at the same time know how to do amateur HVAC work. Professional HVAC services won't touch stuff like these because it's illegal to modify them

    they are all crap. I have been in this place for 15 years and been through at least 7 of them. All different brands.....3 or 4 months of use in the summer time and thats it. They are garbage. Budget for it and just keep throwing the old ones at the end of the driveway for the scrappers. I havent come up with a better solution.

    How do you people get it frozen? If your house is in normal temperature, ice can’t occur? If you leave them in a frozen room, then it’s not the machine but you’re at fault.

      The coils are at freezing temperatures to get water to condense on it. Maybe understand HOW the machine works, before blaming the users.
