It is the hottest day of the year and yet your air conditioner is freezing up. Mark Boissoneault from Tradesman Heating and Cooling shares with you the three reasons why your air conditioner freezes up and what you can do to prevent that from happening.
*So amazingly quiet and **Fastly.Cool** in my room! 42db is at a whisper level. I bought 2 and installed myself.Very sturdy bracket and easy to adjust to fit windows of different size. Absolutely fabulous units!!*
Simple, Clear, Accurate, no blaring background music. One of the best posts I have ever seen on UA-cam.
I appreciate the feedback Brian.
indeed the information was very accurate and my air cond is working properly again
Tradesman Mechanical Services Ltd. My tenant runs the A.C. when it is cool outside and the AC frezzes up. What is the lowest outside Fahrenheit temperature you can run a Central AC unit without doing damage.? Help.
I couldn't have said it better
Thanks for your pleasant comments Brian!
Thank you so much . My air conditioning froze up today. I have change the filter in the air return. But I did not realize there was another filter in the heating unit where the air flows thru. So once I defrost I will check that. My dad died last year. And mom is clueless on everything he did about the house. They just had this unit installed last year before he died. And she can not find her paper work. So you have been so helpful. Thank you very much.
Years later and you just fixed my a/c. Thanks
Thank you so much for making this video! Hot spell in the middle of Feb and we have been burning up in the house for three days waiting for the repair guy... It was the filters of course...we all get a great nights sleep thanks to you...i will sub and like for ya.
Excellent, excellent presentation!
Thanks for a good explanation. I have another reason for Ice-up on my AC unit. My digital thermostat was malfunctioning - turning on the compressor and not the fan. The lack of air flow that you mentioned freezes it up pretty quick. Thanks for confirming that the lack of air flow can cause icing.
Thank you for your thorough explanation! This was very helpful to us when we had difficulty with our a.c. unit.
Thanks. That was perfectly explained.
did it...and its working perfectly fine! Thank you so much!
Useful, thoughtful and easily digestible information. Thank you!!
Thanks allot Mark and team, you just made me find the reason why my conditioner was freezing. It was both air bockage and a dirty filter. Thaks for sharing your knowledge to the world. Greetings from Monterrey, Mexico!
There is only 1 reason an evaporator coil freezes, if the evaporator drops below freezing level. All your answers are the causes of why it's dropping below freezing 😊. Ether way great video.
Excellent video, blazing summer heat and the ac is constantly puddling water under the handler. I changed the filter and hosed down the a pillar which was full of dust(desperate maneuver). I check the drain line and it's clear. I think it's low refrigerant and me having the vent in the second bedroom closed completely. A combination of things. Great video thank you.
Thanks mate. Bloody AirConditioner frozed up twice today. Thanks to you i know what happening 👍 G'day Mate. To hot here at the Tip of Australia 🌞⛅
Thank you for this free information. Seems nothing’s ever free anymore. I had a new heating cooling unit installed in April, this is September and I can’t cool my place any cooler than 80. Finally, today a tech came out and fount it was frozen, no one ever looked before. Had seven service calls. My thought all along was that there is a restriction or a leak, because it’s colder in the crawl than the house. I don’t understand the a/c process, but, now I see why little clearer. Thanks again.
Happy to have helped!
Thank you so much I'm new to the field and had a compressor and sucton line In ice and I knew it was a leak in the system but you also said that if you block all the vents that can be the issue as well.
Great explanation and use of filter and part of evaporator coil to demonstrate. It was simple and not overly complicated. Thanks again Mark. May God continue to Bless your business.
Thank you Sergio for your response. Have a great day!
Thank you very much for helping me to understand my A/C system better.
Yes you are correct. A contactor or thermostat as well as a pinched wire that shorts out Y to R can all be a reason that would cause the system to stay running and over cool and freeze up the evaporator. There are a few other conditions also not mentioned here as well. My intention for this short video was simply to offer a basic explanation of what I consider to be 3 of the most common reasons that most homeowners might encounter.
Thank you for your comment.
Better than 90% of others explanations. Good Job. Now I know for sure what is going on, thought it was pump or drain clog, but air flow problem.
Thank you, for a better understanding
Thank you very much from Smyrna, Tennessee.
Very clear and simple . Thank you .

Very well explained. Wish you would be closer to us, I live in South West Virginia and purchased 22 wall thru PTAC units(heat pump) and brand new units are freezing up while running on the heat setting. Feeling helpless.

Great help. I needed this to figure outs out.
(PS) don't think I don't see that York International patch. ;-) York PA ftw!
Mark thanks your video it was extremely helpful to me. At first when I took the cover off the evaporator looked clean. When I finally figured a way to remove the small cover, so i could see the inside of the evap the crud in there was incredible. I took a toothbrush and a Shop-Vac cleaned it. i wish i could have uploaded photos
I loved it. Exact info I was looking for. Thanks
loved it very helpful thanks
You are awesome, thank you ,your advice was helpful
In most cases it's all about thermostat malfunction. resulting the AC unit to operate without cutout. second is some leaking ( freon) in the system and third is that dirty air filter . Big thanks for this. man! From start to end you deliver it well and it surely does add some information. More power 😉
Thanks
If the refrigerant level is too high, how does it affect the ac performance
Thank you so much for your help and explainations
My Pleasure !
very good explanation...
Very helpful thanks for posting
Thanks for your help!
Thanks for the tips. I was having a lot of issues with my old coil freezing.
Turns out I had some airflow issues. One of the returns was blocked during previous renovation work..
My fan speed was set to low.
The old A/C unit blows ice cold after fixing these issues.. I have a feeling coughing up cash for a new one would have run into the same issues soon enough.
Great answer found my problem immediately
Thanks a lot
great video!
Extremely informative, thank you for sharing
You are most welcome. Have a great day!
Thank you for the info.
Thank u so much, after watching your video I went to check my air filter , WOW!!! It was so far gone, went n changed it ! Worked like a charm!! Thank u again!!!!

Thank you so much for educating the reasons for AC freezing. It happened once to my AC because I forgot to change the air filter.
Happy to have helped. Have a great day!
Good info! Thanks for sharing
Extremely helpful, thank you
Nice! Have a great day.
Thanks. Good information.
Sir THANK'S A LOT !
Hi, thanks for the video! Is there a way to know how many pounds of coolant need to be added to a system to fully charge it, before the coolant is actually added? Do the gauges when checking tell you how many pounds low it is? Also...with a 4.5 ton A-coil, should I expect an HVAC service person to take it out and lug it upstairs and outside to clean it, or is cleaning in place what I should expect?
Thank you for the tips. I have turned my machine off, and I will go to sleep, and hopefully it will have all melted by tomorrow morning. I am one of those people that like to live in a freezer, therefore, I usually have my unit running at 16°. I guess I know now to keep it at 20°. Hopefully that’s the only issue, and that it’s not an issue with the Freon that you mentioned, in which I would need to call a professional to come help me out with that matter.
I appreciate the clear, concise, straight to the point video that you have provided, and I will provide feedback as to whether or not, it was a success for me. Thank you.
This guy is great was about to pay to have someone tell me what he just did thank you so much

Thank you ours is making popsicles. Will try your suggestions.
Thank you very helpful
Thank you.
Thanks for the video man!
My dad has a problem with his unit freezing up. The unit is installed in a concrete basement garage and I have an idea that it doesn't get enough warm air through the system because the basement stays cool practically without air but maybe it actually is low on freon?.
Yes we are having problems with are ac too it keeps freezing up. But I watched this video and it was very helpful so not to turn the ac to 40 degrees but have it up a little bit. I did clean all the filters out up above the ceiling. But I think all the vents are open so what do I do next from there
thank you very helpful
Thank you very helpful. Our A/C is o my two and a half years old since our home was built and it's leaking. I had two bathrooms and two closet vents closed on the second floor. I just opened them and I'm praying that solves it.
Make sure that your drain hose is clear as well. Good luck!
Great info thanks
Have a great day1
Great info!
Awesome! Thank you sooo much, I was freaking out
Nice!
My problem was caused by being a little low on freon. Made sure the filter was changed but was still freezing up. Got the system charged correctly and now back to working perfectly.
Excellent video - 1 question I have a York Aircon installed approx 5 years ago. Always have clean filters, changed regularly. My fear is that the unit is "too small" for the house square footage. Its aYork LX YCJD 13 Seer. My house square footage is 1800 sq ft above grade. Of course the company that sold and installed it have gone out of business. It is freezing up even if I set it to 23C - any thoughts?
Great information
Thanks for your comment. Have a great day!
Thank you sir
