To all the kids out there - Take care of your gen ed classes at community college, finish the bachelor's at an in state school. Work while you go to school. Cash flow it. In nearly 20 years in my career the number of people who have asked me where I went to college is exactly zero. I know there are exceptions. But hardly any employer cares. What you will learn about the “we’re family” companies is that it is absolutely true…right up until they have a couple of bad quarters, then you are handed a final paycheck, some severance and you have to come up with COBRA health coverage. I have worked and been laid off by more of these companies than I care to count. Your loyalty should always be to your loved ones and you. If I sound jaded, it is because I have been in the work world for 35 years (this includes working for an actual family as a PA - they laid me off on Valentines while they were on a wine tasting vacation). You could volunteer some time with this company and find a higher paying main job. Do not waste time on company loyalty. If they valued you truly, they would be paying more for something with a Masters.

You told her, with a second job bringing an extra 1k a month, it will take 6 years to get out of debt. She then was relieved and felt less pressure to get the job because it seemed not that bad. You could have shown her that with her current 300$ a month only, it would take her 27 YEARS!!! to pay it off.

Instead I moved to that state and went to community college, established residency after my first year, got my associates, and then was accepted and transferred into my dream university. I am in my senior year now and I have no student loans due to the many scholarships I got being a transfer student. I am also in the accelerated masters, where all of my senior classes are grad level classes. That means hopefully I will only need 1-1.5 more years to have a masters in engineering. When you're struggling with money, sharing that with your children is just cruel. @@Jane-yg3vz educating and burdening go hand in hand when it comes to finances, there’s honestly no way around it. Privileged individuals grow up with money never being an object, and struggle if things take a turn because money was meaningless to them. You don’t have to slam kids with all the negativity and numbers to let them in on the finances to teach them. There are plenty of ways that it can be taught, but they lose part of their childhood innocence when they start to understand how money works. This can be seen by many as a burden, and why it is often avoided when kids are growing up
Growing up I was expected to do what I was told around the house, and never got an allowance. But if I was wanting something like a new toy or game and it wasn’t my birthday or Christmas, I was able to pick up extra work around the house and was given a price breakdown of how much each hour was worth and it varied depending on what I was doing at the time. This is how I learned about how money worked. Flash forward to when I was 10 and my family became broke, I was unfortunately burdened with a lot of our situation without knowing the exact figures. But I was told how many days without food we would go if we wanted something, helping to choose between cutting internet or cable so we could afford groceries, understanding why my mother told us she wasn’t hungry while we ate, etc. were some of the things I went through.
The first part was a good education that money came from working hard, but the second part drove home how important finances are and how to live on extreme budgets. Although I wouldn’t want anyone to go through that, the lessons were invaluable.

I went from getting paid 50k as a nurse to 70k. I LOVED the hospital I worked at so so much more! The environment, the people, the benefits, everything! The job was not what they advertised it to be and she was developed anxiety over trying to please the bosses, which she never could. This was very sweet of you to say but that was not the girl I saw. She has convinced herself she will live forever and will always be in debt and what Caleb told her gave her hope she will not die in debt. Now she is fine with her current life isn’t looking at what her future can really be. She could make all the money she needs teaching English online nights and weekends but she has to see that the grind is worth it. She is too content after what she thinks are horrible storms in her life have passed. But the truth is she is setting herself up for the next storm to hit with no safety line. I hope her time with Caleb and the comment section helps her see she could have a relief from her stressful life if she pushes herself and learns she will not break. That is resilience.

I bought an art degree, Studio Fine Arts with a minor in PA German, but I didn't do it for the degree itself and didn't go into debt for it -- I just paid cash out of my panhandling and labor money, and was homeless for the whole period, if I didn't make enough I didn't go full time, so it took a bit. I took like 3 classes one semester, then one the next, etc. Took a while but I really enjoyed it. I didn't take advantage of programs because getting involved in gov money freaked me out back then. I feel degree costs should scale with the median income of the graduates of that degree... but that'll never happen, so. Like obviously library sciences make less than anything in STEM and yet they have a similar cost? Make it make sense! Remove the requirement for gen eds and electives ffs.
