I've been watching so many videos on the topic, from all these other youtube doctors, but never really got a down to earth, simple but understandable explanation. The other doctors get too technical and miss the whole picture. This explanation is like from a Doctor that really cares and does not sensationalize the issue. Thanks Dr. Becky
dr Im amazed how easy you explain this tank you they are to many genios on u tube that talk to mach and dont realy know what ther talking abouth god bless you, ! you are my heroe!
Brilliant simple explanation of what might be wrong and how to fix it. No doom and gloom, no preaching - just great information to enable self help. Respect Dr. Becky 🙏🏼😍
Best explanation ever would have included the role of saturated fat (as intracellular lipids) in the development of insulin resistance. I was surprised not to hear this mentioned.
Thx Becky. In 4 minutes your taught me what insulin is, it’s consequences if it isn’t working. And how proper diet, exercise & sleep can keep it working well. I’ve taken out books. Read google stuff and watched 1/2 dozen UTUBE videos that didn’t get me to understand like your short clip. Thank you again
Fantastic explanation As someone learning more about diet, nutrition and the dangers of processed food and sugar this has been invaluable in tyeing it all together
Perfect been a type 2 diabetic since 2005 and I am now educating myself and putting in the work to reverse my type 2 diabetes and have wonderful results no more injectable insulin necessary for ME . I am a work in progress thanks for your videos and expertise they are making a difference in my life.
Thank you Doctor!! You're ways of explaining are really good and short which makes me easier to understand this topic. You saved me! I have to do this for my science assesment😂☺️
I went to my Dermatologist for the removal of skin tags on my neck and shoulders. I asked him if it was true that skin tags are created from eating too many carbs. He said that you are insulin resistant. Eating less carbs and walking more after you eat would help with insulin resistance. Loosing weight, eating less carbs and walking has given me more energy and stamina.
You are beautiful drBecky. I have preeti good health entire my life, but this spring all of a suden found out I have cloged arteries and tipe 2 diabetes.Hate pills so your advices are really helpful for me.Thank you so much!(please excuse my english,is 2nd language)
Doctor, you missed one IMPORTANT point. what causes insulin resistance?is it because of Pancreas is warn off or is it because what exactly? How does it happen?
I thought the same thing: she missed the big pink elephant in the room. She failed to address what was causing insulin resistance in the first place. And nobody but you saw it. Congratulations, you hone your critical thinking. ps: the answer is FAT. That is the cause of insulin not working to unlock the channels for glucose in the cell.
Hi Dr. Gillaspy. I have Type 2 Diabetes but I'm "underweight". What causes me to be "underweight"??? I'm currently taking Metformin (Hydrochloride) - 1000MG 2X daily. I'm so frustrated! Any advice & suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks. This was very easy to understand. I do need some clarification, tho. So the person's body, in a last-ditch effort, releases MORE insulin into the bloodstream to try to get the liver, fat, and muscle cells to "open the door" to the glucose (2:02). Does this work? Maybe initially? Or is it always a big NO at the door? Also, you can test for blood sugar easily with a glucose meter, but is there a test for high insulin? How do you know what your insulin level is? I feel like I'm missing something...
I've always been confused by the term 'insulin resistance', should it not be 'glucose resistance' ? ... after all, the cells are resisting the uptake of glucose.
I teach Human Anatomy and Physiology --- this is a 'simple' way to describe this. Yes, you didn't go DEEP but, for the individuals who doesn't understand IR....this is easy enough.
You are welcome. I teach Human Anatomy & Physiology as well as being a Chiropractor. This is the perfect 'simple' explanation to better understand the basics of what IR is.
how do fatty acids go into fat storage if the cells are insulin resistant? Stil yet to see a video explaining why you gain weight if insulin resistant.
I just received my glucose/ketone monitor. How/when should I test to see if I am insulin resistant? I have hypothyroidism. Is this an issue? I have been living a keto lifestyle for close to 6 months. I still need to lose 15 to 20 lbs but have hit a brick wall in the weight loss (2 months sigh) Edit: Just watched your video on Homa IR but still curious about the hypothyroidism.
This video is 7 years old, but I just found it. I first say nice job of saying food becomes glucose and that insulin comes running in to deliver the glucose to parts of the body that should be getting glucose for energy or storage for later use. The mystery i encountered here and in other people's video's is that presenters say the cells will not accept the food delivery they are getting, but, does not explain why cells will not accept delivery. Then, in this video, like others, nobody explains what happens to the glucose and insulin running around looking for some place that will accept them. Nobody explains why cells will not accept delivery, and nobody explains what happens to the excess. All they say is, exercise a lot and magic will happen. When you exercise, then the excess insulin and glucose will just magically disappear. In my mind, that does not make sense. If you see this comment , and have a better video that addresses this mystery, please share. If you think you have the answer, but no video, please create one. Lots of people are talking about insulin resistance, but nobody is explaining the whole process and functional solutions.
I think I might have undiagnosed insulin resistance (type 2 diabetes) because I have loads of sypmtoms but I DON'T have excessive thirst... I'm dehydrated, brain foggy rashes, dizzy esp after meals but I'm hardly ever thirsty... Is there a test you could recommend? A black and white test that leaves no room for this to evade detection? Thanks for the vid! Great info well presented too.
Hi dog e, if you want a definitive diagnosis, you should go to your doctor. He or she will order some form of glucose test (i.e. a fasting blood glucose test). The exact test ordered will be determined based on your complete health history and symptoms. No matter the outcome, you can start moving in the right direction today by increasing your fiber consumption (i.e. vegetables, beans) and decreasing or eliminating sugar from your diet. If you haven't already, you can watch my free video series over on my website. It will help get you started on your diet. drbeckyfitness.com/4DailyHabits
Becky Gillaspy : A serum insulin test would be more conclusive in that many diabetics can still pass a fasting Blood Glucose test, but the serum insulin test reveals all.

Thanks Doc!
Cogently succinct.🏋🏽
Thank you, doctor
Wow. Thank you. So insulin is kind of like a key 🔑
How does exercise open the door to the muscle cells?

With my patients, I find that balancing their hypothalamus is the key to treating their insulin resistance.
Curious about how one balances the hypothalamus. What is the treatment?
finally understood this
Very nice video Becky. Thank you:)
