How do you get about being totally disrespected as a person throughout the whole episode and get tormented by a giant ass flying killer whale the next?
Let's break down the Priscilla scene and why she turned down helping Subaru, since her scene tends to be commonly misunderstood. Crusch & Anastasia's justification is pretty straightforward: We have nothing to gain & things to lose from helping, Subaru seems unhinged & unstable, his Intel might be unreliable, the whole thing might be a Witch Cult ploy & we have far more pressing matters to attend to with the selection going on. Priscilla is a bit less clear cut, but think its all to do with motivation & natural talent for insight into people's natures. As a side note analyzing her behavior in this scene made me realize how much she reminds me of Gilgamesh from Fate. The first thing we need to establish is that Priscilla is indeed "testing him", but not about whether he will or wont lick the foot, but how he goes about doing it. Body language cues revealing motive & the like. As she said, either decision he could have made would entertain her, but instead he ends up making her so angry she decides that she will make it her current active goal to destroy any political camp that welcomes someone like Subaru into its midst. Why is that? The biggest keys are in her wording just after she kicks him, but as set up: Priscilla said earlier she admired his devotion & loyalty to his "master" (Emilia) despite how poorly he had clearly been treated by them recently. Effectively: she found the idea that he is so wholeheartedly devoted to Emilia's well-being to be endearing & she would probably consider helping him purely out of a sense of affection towards that devotion. She gives him the choice of abandoning any semblance of self-respect or pride he might still be carrying as a further show of his devotion as an opportunity to tip her over the edge into "it might be entertaining to help out this helpless wretch" territory. Even if he decides to hold on to his pride she would consider that to be entertaining in its own way, "even this man will only go so far". But when Subaru actually goes to do it, the way he goes about it seems to trigger Priscilla to have an epiphany about Subaru & realizes that she had his motives all wrong. "What you just displayed was neither loyalty nor devotion. It's something more filthy, like a dog's dependence or a pig's greed. You lazy pig who only knows how to want!" Subaru isn't petitioning for her help out of a deep seated sense of devotion & loyalty to Emilia but out of a toxic dependence on her approval for his own self-esteem, irrelevant of how Emilia actually feels or benefits from it. He wants her help so that he can be Emilia's savior, not so that Emilia will be saved (even if he himself doesn't realize this). This sudden revelation of Subaru being so unfathomably parasitic in his total dependence on Emilia causes her full 180 from moderate affection for unshakeable loyalty to enraged disgust at his total dependence. Total selfishness & total selflessness are two sides of the same coin, and closer inspection has revealed what she thought was one to actually be the other. She immediately throws him out and swears that any group that would allow a disgusting parasite like Subaru to be a part of it is an eyesore to her, and says she will personally seek to destroy any such group in future. So basically she was offering him the chance to show his dedication to Emilia, but instead he ended up revealing his total dependence on her. The Greed Of A Swine.

@@guilhermemeyer5110 Though that is the case, after ep 15, I really don't blame him for bugging the fuck out. He just watched everyone he cared about get slaughtered and he really couldn't do anything about it for awhile. Anyone would freak out after all that
I have to constantly tell myself "Of course they would treat Subaru this way. He isn't the protagonist to them, he's a nobody that's been a douche in their eyes."
To clarify: They mentioned the White Whale a few time throughout the series thus far. It is one of the Great MaBeasts. Anything caught in its fog is purported to disappear. In the last few loops, one of the reasons why it took him so long to get to the mansion, was because the Whale's fog had been spotted on that road. Thus, all traffic had to take a different route. Suburbs forgot that, and leaving early, ran into the Whale this time. ...And do not worry y'all the misery shall have its turnaround point soon enough
The path to the dark side starts with fear .... fear leads to anger and hate .... Subaru is full of fear soo it makes sense that this dark side is revealing itself so profoundly.
It’s funny how the scene is a little different in the light novel . The way the anime portrayed it, everyone in the audience jumps to a different conclusion and gets triggered 😂
@@rasengan124 The funny thing is, whoever watched it for rem misunderstood the entire scene lmao. SPOILER FOR NEXT EPISODE! Subaru was begging to run away with rem but rem rejected him. After her confession, he chose to strive towards Emelia to accept rem's feelings towards him.
im guessing that people get forgotten when they are killed by the white whale, which would explain otto talking about rem and forgetting who she is ten seconds later..
This is some of the Episodes that made Re:Zero my favorite anime of all time. I'm a big Dark/Mystery genre guy, and this show has it all. Especially the season 2, it went darker and horror 🖤
It's amazing how they manage to progress the story through all that suffering. It's like if a Micheal Bay movie had a decent story on top of the explosions.
12:57 I don't know the name of this lady but she knows what's up. There have been many times that she's been able to see things that the other two have failed at.
Subaru supposed heroism and selflessness, while admirable, is not really genuine at this point of the story. While we may like him and sympathize with him, He's weak, useless, extremely selfish and all of his "bravery"/bravado is completely false. All these feelings are only magnified times a million because of "Return to death". These are things that Subaru will continue to struggle with throughout the series. Hope this isn't spoilery. -P.S. Just to be clear, I really like Subaru.
I think you are missing something. From the very start, and many times along the way Subaru could've just left. But time and time again he chose to get in the harm's way to save someone's life, meddle in the business that was not his. If you pay attention you'll notice how he'd pushed himself to those decisions, like jumping off the cliff, or going to save Felt, Rom and Emilia. Simply because he liked them, even knowing too well the pain it's gonna cost him, he didn't give up. If that was not heroic...
@@ЯБезымянный-о5ф I'm well aware that Subaru cares about the the characters and has shown acts of couragesness. Not once did I insinuate otherwise so I don't really appreciate your, "Pay attention" comment. In the episode before this, Emilia was rightfully pissed and extremly disappointed in Subaru, because not only did he not do what she asked of him, he poked his nose where it did not belonged. As a consequence, he not only did he get his ass kicked, he embarrassed himself along with Emilia as well. At this point in his story, Subaru does act heroically in a quite a few instances, but it is empty because he doesn't really even like himself and sees himself as a failure. With that being said, he himself is not a courageous person. This is why in the first episode that they watched, Crusch and the other two girls told him, in so many words, that he comes of as selfish, pretty pathetic and extremely needy, and that's because he is. It's not by accident that Subaru admits these things to himself. Sheera even said that he has a "serious hero complex." That's not a lie and he's written that way on purpose. The story behind this anime is to watch a very flawed person, suffer horribly and tremendously, over and over again, in order to become the true archetypal "hero".
@@Doughboy1027 The way I see it, it's a story about a very flawed and weak human *being* a hero despite his flaws. If you've seen Monogatari, you probably remember the three different views on a question: "what holds more value - an original or a fake?" Some say the original is always better, some - that they are even, if you can't tell the difference. The best girl Kaiki believed the fake to be of much greater value, "In its deliberate attempt to be real, it's more real than the real thing". This fits perfectly what I want to say about Subaru. He is a fake hero, weak, incompetent, arrogant and cowardly. Deep down he hates himself and doesn't believe anyone can love the failure he is. But in his stubborn struggle he overcomes his weakness time and time again. At those moments when he stood to fight Elsa to let Felt escape, or talked Rem into going into the forest to save kids, or faced the pack of dogs on his own - all while knowing the risks and being scared shitless, he was nothing short of a hero. After all, he had the power to prevent those episodes and minimize the danger to himself. All it would take was to give up, which he didn't. So no, I don't think he's ever been "empty" even if he believes otherwise. His mistakes and flaws only amplify the significance of his victories.
I've seen a few reactions of this show and its crazy how everyone forgets that puck calls Emilia his daughter earlier in the show but then again so much shit happens I guess its easy to forget
3:52 More than that, it's that Subaru right now (as a result of his previous loop) cares more about hurting his enemies than protecting his friends, even if the reason he hates them was because of what they did to said friends.
This is an analysis from someone on a website from ep 16 that I thought would be cool to share, it's very long though The desire of a pig. This episode uses its title in a literal sense. It may not seem like it at first but this episode gave us probably the most character development or set up for character development we ever had in an episode. We also dive deeper into a lot of world building involving politics, economics and cultural backgrounds. First of we see how Crusch seems to invite an important person that is controlling the financial situation in the kingdom. Remember in episode 14 when Crusch said that she is gathering forces for something? It’s possibly for that exact same reason that she know invited someone with financial advice. Let me get to the negotiations with Crusch which was in my opinion done brilliantly in terms of dialogue, meaning and cinematography. What I recognized immediately is that we don’t see Subaru’s eyes directly until he more or less explodes. That’s where this glow in his eyes appears that Crusch mentions as a murderous intent that holds no reason for her to support. We anticipate to see the face of the madman that is shrouded in mysteries within the first minutes of the episode. Now to the content of this negotiations which is really interesting. First off we get the information that the presence of the Witch Cult is not something unknown. They also seem to have a grudge against half elvs as well. I mean they were shown eradicating an entire race. In this scene Crusch strikes me as a really realistic replication of a determined ruler. She does not act out of kind heartedness, she demands something to get if she gives and she clearly knows what lies in her responsibility and what not. Subaru is so captured in his hatred he even forgets the relationship he has with Crusch’s camp which is based on a contract. Crusch asks for her profit if she would help out but the thing is Subaru has nothing to give except a debt. By asking him again if he is willing to go as far as risking Emilia’s candidacy for this rescue we see how desperate he is. I mean he is not wrong, she can’t be a candidate if she is dead but he is trying to negotiate with something that doesn’t give Crusch any profit. Emilia with her background is fated to loose, this is no secret and pretty obvious for anyone with a political understanding. Subaru’s reactions shows how two world with two different ideologies and mentalities clash together. Subaru displays the idea of humanity as the reason to save these people. Why would you hesitate if you can save a lot of people from death? Basically the idea that our world follows. The thing is this world follows different rules and she negotiates with a candidate for the throne. Crusch has no reason to help a rival who is incapable to keep her own territory safe and who is incapable to offer something of profit. Then Crusch addresses something that pretty much anyone with a sharp eye and mind would ask. Where would Subaru get all this information? And when he doesn’t reply what stops her from assuming he is affiliated with them? And guess who is claiming that he has not relation to the cult? Exactly, the girl that accused him of the same thing about 9 episodes ago. This showcases the change of Rem’s relationship with him. After this "pointless talk" ( in Subaru’s eyes ) he explodes and we see his murderous eyes for the first time. All the things that happened in episode 15 have accumulated into endless hatred towards the cult and Betelgeuse. The ending of episode 15 makes a good job at portraying that. All this hatred now clouds his reasoning for going against the cult. He wants them death, he wants to kill them all more than he wants to save the people from them. Crusch pinpoints this fact by saying „Not once did you say that you want to save Emilia“. And now imagine what this sentence means to Subaru. In Subaru’s eyes Crusch basically said that all the effort he poured into saving Emilia, that all the suffering he had to endure for her well being was a mere lie to hide his true intentions. Imagine if you died several times to keep someone alive and then someone who has no idea about all of that comes up and claims that all of this was a shallow lie? After hearing that Subaru merely walks up on her. You have to interpret the context of this scene and you’ll realize that he was about to straight up assault her. In the LN he grabbed a spoon and held it as if he was about to stab her but honestly they handled it way better in here. What this scene showed us really well is that Subaru is nowhere near sane or "back to normal". He simply drifted to another extreme within insanity. But above everything else he learned a lesson in that scene. I don’t really have to say anything about the short scene with Rem except the fact that Subaru has so little control over his emotional state that he almost lashes out on Rem when she talks about the upcoming events as if she doesn’t really believe fully in their truth. Well next to Priscilla’s scene. Oh I love that scene, and no not because of Priscilla’s extremely fine body, hm….No I love it because it teaches Subaru the definition of dignity. What Priscilla wants is entertainment, you can’t possibly lure her out with money or goods. So what Priscilla did was testing Subaru if he was different compared to all the other „pigs“ that are below her. The moment he agreed to lick her feet and actually attempted to do so, he proved that he has no dignity and the greed of a pig. To kill the cultists, to get his revenge he was willing to lay down all of his pride in front of an enemy. He sank to the bottom for a selfish and greedy demand. At last we get Anastasia. First off we hear a bit about her world view and how the royal elections influenced the economics in the kingdom of Lugnica. The demand for weapons higher than ever which ties into the gathering of forces that Crusch talked about. By mentioning Russel Subaru gave Anastasia the information she needed. In short: he got played hard. And then Anastasia says something extremely interesting which also has a lot of irony to it. She says that whatever he does the past won’t change. She says that to the person that can undo the past for the most part but has to live with the consequences of what he did in episode 12 & 13. Anastasia and the story itself is rubbing the fact that Subaru has to live with what he has done into his face. Of course as if Subaru wasn’t already enraged enough, being confronted with your mistakes only fuels this unyielding rage. At the end of their conversation Anastasia even summarizes what his mistakes are and through that we see the third lesson he has learned. Reputation and negotiations. There is not really much to say about the part after this. The Witch Cult seems to be a really thoughtful organization since we hear that many unconfirmed claims of activity similar to the witch cult has been reported. If something is reported so many times without any proof or clues it doesn’t take long until it’s given no attention anymore. At least Subaru now managed to gather means of transportation and he shifted his goal from killing to saving right now even though I wouldn’t be sure if he could contain himself from killing if he got the chance to do it. Close to the end mysterious things start to happen. At first we see "Flügel’s tree" ( Flügel is german for wings by the way ) then a carriage is disappearing and only Subaru seems to remember it and then "it" appears. The fact that they ended it at this point means that episode 17 will be insane. I estimate next episode to be at least on episode 15 level if not even better or worse in terms of suffering.
I appreciate the effort for you sharing this. And I should thank you. What interest me the most is what you said about Priscilla. Since im a webnovel reader, I found Priscilla's characterization quite unique. If I can compare her to another popular character i've seen, its Escanor from 7 deadly sins but she's significantly more intriguing and well fleshed out than him. What you wrote above made me realize how incredibly good Tappei is. The side story "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" made me respect her so much that I started rereading Arc 5 and it blew my mind. The hidden genius of Tappei is just wow.. She rose up at my 4th most favorite female character in Rezero. From being the worst bitch, to a misunderstood candidate for the throne. Everything she does and say makes so much sense now.
Yes, puck is the giant monster cat. After a long battle years ago he has contracted with Emilia as a way to save his own life and continue to protect Emilia. Puck takes the form of the more friendly cute little cat to conserve mana and to make others more comfortable with his presence. Puck and Beatrice were both created by Echidna, the witch of Greed, about 400 years before present day Re:Zero world. "Puck is a Great Spirit presiding over Fire Mana. While he was contracted with Emilia, he used to have a number of conditions, one of which was that he would only appear from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon, though he could use her Od to manifest himself in an emergency. Like Beatrice, Puck is also an Artificial Spirit, making him have a terrible mana consumption rate. He used to drain mana from Emilia, who didn't have any use for it until she remembered that she could use magic on her own during the trials, while lying that he was absorbing it from the atmosphere. Puck had a vow with Echidna that forbade him from forming a contract with Emilia on his own, however he broke this vow as he was on the verge of death, both as a means to save himself and to protect her from the effects of his battle with Melakuera. This resulted in his memories of the past being sealed."
Puck watches over Emilia as if he was her father and she depends on Puck as if she was his daughter. He has been guiding her through life for a long time, this is why they have that connection. Earlier when they were joking around in front of the mansions, Puck was like "I will not give you my daughter's hand" to Subaru in a joking manner.
Wait so... they still don't understand it was Puck at the end two episodes ago? I remember knowing right away and THAT was a huge part of why it was so impactful.
I can understand why you guys are a bit annoyed at how he’s not being a little calmer and being too frustrated, however he never asked to be in this world in the first place in this situation
In that situation, Subaru had every right to be upset and mad. The outburst in the royal selection is inexcusable. But the Witch's Cult situation? That cannot be blamed on Subaru, at all. He's the only one who knows that if Emilia dies, a lot of people are going to die until Reinhard shows up. But Subaru can't explain this to anyone because they'll ask for proof how he knows this beforehand.

They are on season 2 in patreon so this won't spoil
@@wizlocks 👌

This is an analysis from someone on a website from ep 16 that I thought would be cool to share, it's very long though
The desire of a pig.

When you watch season 2 and realize how bad Beatrice had it
Omg yesss
9:35 I can't stop laughing at this lmao

Witch of Envy “Lol k, I’ll gladly take the beating heart you have for that girl.”
Wait so... they still don't understand it was Puck at the end two episodes ago?
I love you guys reactions so much and rezero just makes your reactions even funnier because of how crazy, random and confusing this show is.
