This is amazing. He gave Re:ZERO his highest anime review and second highest tv show review with a 95. Critikal said that 95 and 100 are interchangeable and either is a masterpiece. I am happy as hell.
Re:Zero is the deconstruction of an Isekai, and well executed. The MC isn't overpowered, he's emotional, he's vulnerable, and he's dependent on everyone else for help. I love anime like this.
And it takes itself seriously. I'm tired of all isekai happening inside a video game world or some shit. An actual fantasy world for once is a nice change
The voice acting is on point in this series, it's genuinely horrible when a character dies and they're screaming and gargling on their own blood. You'd think you'd get bored of Subaru dying but it's horrible every time.
I wet my panties when Charlie praised re zero so much and I am a guy and don't even wear panties. My choice just got validated by Jesus himself, for Christ's sake
literally watched the entire series because this video came out, only to find that the video didn't spoil practically anything. not complaining tho, I freaking loved it.
@@korieklion I mean he did spoil some, but it was only really Subaru's ability and some other stuff. I guess I was talking about him not spoiling anything for season 2.
Dude same, as soon as I saw Charlie do a video on it I grabbed my popcorn and binge-watched the shit out of season 2. Turned out he spoiled almost nothing about it.
The most depressing part is the feeling of isolation, he went through so much with the people around him, but only he knows. There are a bunch of meaningfull momments he had with Emilia or Ram that only he remembers, and he can never trully share his troubles with the people who want to support him. There are many episodes that seem to happen mostly inside his head, and I think that really shows how alone he feels
And season 2 ep 8 really shows just how much the weight of that feeling he lift off when he is able to talk about it with echidna, it was such a wonderful moment.
It’s so depressing when he tries to save someone but while trying to find a way to do it people just look down on him, hate him, or just feel disappointed in him. I felt so bad for him when Emilia kept dying and every time he came back she would just be mad at him and scold him saying that he was damaging her reputation also how every other candidate would make fun of him, put him aside, or lie to him for their own scheme even at his most desperate. Those episodes hurt badly
THE NEWMAKER even if her intentions were bad, she still gave Subaru an outlet, closure, and opportunity, he’s still grateful to her like how he is to Satella or the other witches.
The reason re:zero doesn't have so many flashy fights is because subaru isn't your typical strong and mighty protagonist, and in my opinion, that's a part what makes this show so good. Subaru is a simple human, with human flaws and clear weaknesses, allowing you to relate more to all the suffering he is going through and magnifying the satisfaction received from when he solves a difficult situation.
KHOKH 69 sure man you keep telling yourself that it is weak to cry when being forced to experience some of the most painful injuries this world can offer.
Interesting. Would he like it more if the females' nipples shot lasers to defeat there foes? Or if the main character shot missiles through his butt hole while singing it's raining men. (Btw nobody steal these ideas they belong to me)
@@justaguyonyoutube1141 Nipple lasers are already a thing in One Piece and specifically female nipple lasers are probably a thing elsewhere. I'll have to look a little harder for the butthole missles.
Ima be honest, I had no idea- I don’t know if we’re talking about the same anime that I saw because it’s had holy firefighter demons slayers & some pretty mediocre side characters._. I’m sorry but yeah, I thought the characters fit at least one anime character trope
The only bad thing (if you can even say it's a bad thing) is the OP/ED only play once every blue moon and they're absolute bangers. Even with 26+ minutes episodes there is no room for the songs and the episodes always end on a cliffhanger that always keeps me coming back for more
@@janogabor7697 I'm glad i forgot about that episode man. I got to experince it a 2nd time and the 2nd time it hit much harder than the first. Requiem of silence is such an amazing soundtrack
Totally agree. And one of the few shows that display real character development. Subaru is sorta shit to start with but his journey brings him to be a better person, whilst also crushing him slowly and eating away at his sanity every step of the way. Another awesome thing this show gets right is him being powerless to do alot of things on his own, hence the literally broken OP supporting characters, he is surrounded by people that could be considered gods compared to him in terms of powers and ability, giving emphasis on how he needs to learn to work/bargain and carefully manipulate the odds to his own favour. Reinhardt literally has plot armour as his power (divine protection) and could wipe the nation from the world if he wanted to, the witches are each incredibly powerful in their own ways, even their lackeys like Betelgeuse prove to be truly formidable to people much stronger than Subaru. A great story with probably the best example of world building and character development, with the right amount of spicy drama and the rare tease of action every now and then really hit it out of the park as a show. My ONLY complaint about it is Fredricas beat transformation which I kinda cringed to see but, apart from that I couldn't complain at all about anything else.
I remember avoiding this show because based on the art and memes, it looks like it's just another waifu war harem bullshit. I've never been more wrong and I shouldn't have judge a book by it's cover. Also, memes are pretty misleading sometimes.
i thought it was a harem as well... until the show showed me a hikkikomori that was trying to escape from his self esteem issues through delusions and getting ironically reality checked by an isekai world in the first episode and then for another 30+ eps. this show isnt escapism. its subtle advice (the situations subaru faces) with examples (how subaru reacts to these situations). the best advice being "love yourself more".
A few things to add to Charlies praise, It also doesn’t rely on fanservice and has some of the deepest most emotional dialogue I have heard in anime. One episode is entirely a single conversation between two characters, and it remains to be one of the single greatest anime episode I have ever seen. So fantastic. Please watch it if you haven’t
@@AbderrahmenLahyani Agreed but Re:Zero dialogue and Gatari's dialogue are really different and great in their own ways. For me Re:Zero dialogue is really great because of how much author thinks about characters emotions, and fleshes them out in their words. I read WN after watching season 1 and now watching season two, i'm amazed at how great the VA's and animators managed to capture atmoshpere of the moments, reasons behind the words and reactions. First trial and Beatrice scene broke my heart into thousand pieces once again even though I already knew what are they gonna say.
And ANOTHER thing, the voice acting is SO REAL. You can especially tell when Subaru breaks down crying, and it sounds like real, ugly crying. Genuinely the best VA I have ever heard of
Also, what's really cool about Re:Zero is that there are plot points where Subaru's morality is being tested. He has to choose over the path of sin or virtue to get an outcome he desires. And obviously, Subaru chose all the correct paths (so far). Also during Subaru's birthday, which is April 1st, the author actually writes these IF stories and it shows what would've happened if Subaru chose the wrong path.
Eh (Edit: I'm sorry it's not a masterpiece? I just said eh about yall's favorite show and the dude responding to me gets ten likes for calling me an elitist xD)

@@sugiroh69 Maybe in the anime fandom but I don't think it's as mainstream as Attack on Titan or every other shounen shows out there. None of my friends even knows about this show. They only watch mainstream anime like AoT, MHA, One Punch Man and etc. I tried recommending Re:Zero to my friends a couple years ago and they thought it was just one of those anime made for otaku losers to jerk off to.
@@jc9622 I can see that, my experiences have been different though. Everyone I know talks about ReZero endlessly, moreso than AoT even (which I do agree AoT is most likely more talked about), even some people I have on Facebook from high school I've even seen some of them who are just mainstream anime fans talk about it. I think the show is a pretty big thing even outside of the anime fandom. Not that that's a bad thing, I thoroughly enjoyed season 1 and season 2 had its moments for me, but it just seems to be the most talked about thing ever atm. Suppose it varies though since there seems to be that disconnect in our experiences.
Respawning means you died but when you come back everything you already did already happened. For example if you say kill 30 monsters and the 31st kills you, when you respawn there aren't gonna be 31 monsters. There will be one. Reloading is the correct term here
There’re spin-offs of Re:Zero called “IF” stories. The “IF” stories are just as good as the main story so if there is a Re:Zero fan who hasn’t read or seen the videos by Echidnut, they should
A big thing about Subaru, and why he doesn't just spam his ability (although he may have done something similar in an IF story, *cough cough*, go read them). It's because dying fucking hurts, and it never gets easier to die. Subaru feels the same amount of pain no matter how many times he dies. So when he ever considers using it, he's putting a lot of things at stake in his mind.
@@SapphireAura subaru went from a kid on a bed watching anime to getting killed over and over having to fix everyones problem and going through mental trauma at this point it only gets worse
I will go feral if we ever get to see Arc 6 animated. For me, this is genuinely a show that has gotten better with each Arc, Arc 5 wasn’t as good as Arc 4 imo but that’s mostly because there’s a lot of action and reading action kinda sucks but i feel like it translates well into anime, so i’m sure it’ll be amazing too. Growing up with this anime makes me feel like i’m seeing a future classic in the making
I'm about 80% of the way through Arc 5 of the web novel, and I agree that the action would probably be better in animated form. I've heard that Arc 6 is fucking fantastic, so I can't wait to get to it.
I’ll be honest, as much as I want to see Re Zero come to an end, I really want the author to write it out completely, even if it takes over 10 more years. I’m willing to wait that long so the WN/LN and anime can run its proper course and end properly. I want Re:Zero to actually conclude as a top tier story that rivals that of Attack on Titan and various Western stories in terms of story telling.
@@slice768 I finished it maybe half a year ago after dropping it for a few months, and it definitely lived up to the hype! Idk if it's my favorite arc, but it's definitely contending with arc 4 imo. Also Subaru is a completely average human in this world. He doesn't really "fight" with strength, he has to use his mind and Return by Death to outsmart his opponents, maybe even circumventing a fight altogether.

I started watching this show based on his recommendation, and I must concur: the show is just really good. Eagerly awaiting the release of the 2nd half of Season 2 next year.
Even when you know that everything can be reset, the stakes never really fall flat like other “time travel” stories or when deaths are retconned. It’s always tense enough, while also cooling down often enough to not make it tiring.
I am so delighted there are so many people really enjoying the show. I was compeltely enchanted by it the very first episode I saw back in 2016, I even made a note in GDrive to my future self to rewatch it but it proved unnessecary since I would come back to it every so often and even read every translation on the this incredibly huge piece of literary fiction (I've once read that in character count, it's about seven times the length that the whole Harry Potter series has). I just want to point out one thing that occurred to me early on and has continued to stick out for me after the second season came out. Subaru is defined by the discrepancy between his self-image (impaired by his low self-esteem) and the judgment others have of him (most of them, even the top dogs of society, view him in an extremely positive light despite his well-known shortcomings). I have a thesis that the Return By Death curse could be understood as a manifestation of this dissonant state of mind he holds: In objectifying himself and his life as a means to an end for others, he violates his own human dignity (Objectification is the core violation human dignity attempts to shield against, at least as Kant understood it). This ultimate and most extreme 'self-sacrifice' proves his own worthlessness to the real world. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. (Obviously, I know that this is not what the creator was thinking about or that it is at least very unlikely, but bear with my pseudo-deep interpretation). Subaru feels terrible guilt and embarrassment when confronted with honest praise, affection, and approval because he feels like his Return By Death tricks them into imagining him as a hero. I am tempted to go into a full tangent about his psychology which I find very intriguing but the main point is that his tragedy is one of self-imposed and unjust (for he is an outsider to the world) suffering for the sake of others. One could even say martyrdom (Wanting to avoid religious implications, I'll leave out the obvious parallel to Christ. I'm not a religious person but I find this very obvious parallel worth exploring.). Because of the nature of his suffering (dying over and over again), the challenge the hero must overcome is not to survive a difficult situation (it is more or less clear that he will manage somehow in the end) but by prevailing in spirit and not surrendering the concept of human dignity itself. One might think that a challenge that one is guaranteed to overcome (infinite tries = 100% chance of winning) is no real challenge. But this is a mistake: Re Zero shows that Death in some sense, is something merciful. There is the unspoken agreement that everyone has to try hard in their lives but only until their dead. The dead are exempt from the suffering of existence. To Subaru, this agreement that is universal to all life throughout the entirety of history is reversed: To him, death only marks a new beginning. He becomes isolated from the sphere of living and every time he is forced to ask himself the most fatal questions: "I, who is so useless and leeches off the false esteem I tricked others into holding for me, am I not morally obliged to use my life for the sake of saving others? Isn't the most meaningful action I can take to die for the sake of those dear to me? Isn't this the only way I can fulfill their expectations? Won't they love me then? Won't my life become meaningful?" And, worst of all, it's even the truth! He is, in fact, otherwise completely useless. In the harsh and extreme world of the royal election, everyone around him is basically a superhuman, he, on the other hand, is a run-of-the-mill social outcast, first isolated in his own world by his poor self-esteem, now isolated in the new world by his poor self-esteem as it has manifested itself in the real world (Return by Death). Thus, one can make a very good case that the best (rational) outcome for everyone is that he gives in to the temptation and uses his life as a disposable means to achieve the happiness of others (this is Echidona's Greed Route [Kasaneru]). Instead, he cannot bring himself to abandon the value of his life, despite the rational argument against holding onto it. As Charlie points out, suicide doesn't come easy to him, and not just because of his mortal fear but also because it would be confirming Echidona's thesis that his life is meaningless. And we can see that the people around him share the sentiment he innately knows, as every time he disgraces himself, they feel estranged and disgusted (notably Emilia who couldn't understand why he would go to such lengths time and time again, Priscilla when he asked for her help, Otto when he tried doing everything alone, etc.). In his existential struggle, Subaru proves to the reader/viewer time and time again that the main goal is not achieving an end (as rationalism dictates) but that some man is moral-bound by certain principles that restrict the means he can change in pursuing his ends and the most important, essential and inevitable principle he is charged with affirming is that of the unconditional value of human life and the fact that it is even not available to free disposition to the person living it themselves. Subaru is not a Hero by the virtue of integrity, bravery. He is a hero by virtue of the fact that he accepts and faces the most gruesome and unjust suffering imaginable accompanied by all the doubts and resentments it generates against fate itself; all in the name of doing something meaningful. I know this whole thing sounds very pretentious and even I myself was reminded of the Rick and Morty copypasta but I just had to get this outta my system, it's been literally brewing in me for years now. I hope if anyone reads this they'll see it as what it is: Just a fanboy babbling about his favorite show.
finally someone fucking gets it. i love the type of people that didnt get pissed after ep 18 because they understood subaru. subaru tries hard because of his past failures and has deluded himself to thinking hes worthless. this series is just reverse escapism with advice. this series shows us a protag that seems like a mirror for us and puts this protag in an isekai that ironically reality checks him frequently despite the fact that the isekai genre is purely escapism. the show tells us what to do and what not to do. it highlights the deadly sins and shows us a better path instead of giving in to these sins. subaru is a mirror for the audience and thats why everytime something bad or good happens to him we either relate to it or feel thankful for him. and this is why "Love yourself more" was so impactful. because the audience also needed those words. RBD is semantics for our hidden burdens and insecurity and thats why when subaru finally released his inner problems we felt joy as well. i love ReZero because its like the reverse version of escapism. we got baited into thinking this is gonna be another power fantasy but in reality its subtle advice with accompanying examples dressed as a "uwu cute anime girls" series.

I don't watch anime like that a lot but my friends told me to pick this one up and Even the likes of God level anime like Death Note, AOT, Tokyo ghoul, FMA Brotherhood, it can hold its own. Glad to see Charlie gave it a 95/100 great anime!
the anime is just a masterpiece, the idea doesnt sound good at first but the execution is brain trembling ;) s2 is the best thing i have watched ever, first few eps were weak, but from ep 4 (that made me cry) to ep 13 it was perfect and re zero is the only anime where i didnt see a plot twist coming
I must be the only 1 that thought FMA brotherhood was a bit meh, and TG had a great season 1, season 2 and 3 were boring, season 4 was ok. Death Note and AOT, definitely god tier though. I’d probably throw in Akame Ga Kill as well, just because I think that’s my all time, although people would disagree.
The thing I really like about this series is how suspenseful it is. For the most part, I know that the main character isn't going to die halfway through the season. In re:zero it's even less of an issue, because Subaru can restart, but in my experience that is what makes the suspense. It's not about Subaru dying, but about him dying and losing all the progress he had made since his last reset. Beating the bad guy but potentially dying and having to start from square one is suspenseful in it's own way.
For me the reason time travel animes get to me is that these characters will have heartfelt conversations and really grow character development all for it to be erased.
I was waiting so long for you to do a Moist Meter about Re:Zero. For all people who are tempted to watch the anime after this video, please do! If you like anime this is definitly worth your time. And I can't recommand the novel enough, it is so well written.
The best thing Re:Zero does is that it never gives the audience the feeling that "oh whatever, this bad thing happened but subaru can just die again". Probably because he usually accomplishes a lot of events in one life and dying during one event forces him to overcome difficult obstacles that he may have gotten lucky overcoming in his previous life.
Maybe then you should recommend your friend SSS Class Suicide Hunter, who has the same ability, going back by 24 hours when he dies. But in this novel (yes, its a novel) the guy isn't afraid to kill himself again and again. It desensitizes dying in a way. I think it currently has 70 chapters or so. I got bored of reading it.

ngl i hated subaru in the beginning, his "doing it for emilia's sake" seemed really selfish especially that episode when he fights the knight. But seeing s2 and the reason why he acts so erratic and why he approaches life a certain way, makes me understand him more. I feel like he was written to be a dislikable person because him changing would be part of his character development, unlike some of the op cookie cutter main characters from other isekais. Really enjoyed this show, can't wait for more! 💜
Yeah well said, he began changing for the best since ep 18 where he was forced to self reflect. To where he actually starts to apply himself, to allow himself the opportunity to excel in strategy. I was happy to see his character be actually preserved for season 2.
Dude grew up as a shut in failure with high expectations from others. After dying he thought he would have a chance to change himself and he ends up finding out he’s a failure. Only thing he has to give him strength is his return by death and since he knows he can save others lives he uses it. Dude wants to become a knight in a fantasy world. Not only did it show how he’s a shut in who likes fantasy worlds and being the main character it also shows why he’d even decide to go through with it.

@@gabeboi3162 Yeah, I think about Mid first season I got a bit thrown off on what was going on but then I did my own little recap to understand it better.
Nope, the exact opposite. In season 2 he gets waaaaaaay better and is pretty good MC, but season 1 subaru is easily my no 1 worst MC ever, of all time. I love dark stories where MC has to suffer and the world is against him, the concept for the show is amazing, and the moments when they show actually human side of Subaru (faking mental illnes to avoid another trouble, because he had enough/delaying suicide even thought it would fix shit, because he was afraid of the pain) are great, but holy shit Subaru is more annoying and retarded than worst of Luffy, Natsu & Naruto put together. When he actually puts up plan to take down the whale (which was full of convinient shit that had to go his way to even gather the party, and all characters changed personalities from worse than devil to pure good between his death and the preparations for plan), it was so 180 degrees from all that he did before that I thought I've skipped some episodes where he finally gets his character developement, but nope. It took him like 3/4 deaths to kind of realise his power? Half of his deaths in S1 are his fault, and he absolutely deserved to suffer for his insane stupidity & being no.1 simp in entirety of anime (I have no problem with him chosing Emilia over Rem, rather I get why you wouldn't want to be with someone who murdered you brutally for smelling bad, but holy shit "Emilia-tan" was half of his dialogue in S1). I literally clapped when Otto thrown his bitch ass from cart, and I couldn't root nor relate for him even tiny bit in S1.
@@nocebo5792 Nothing is convenient when he has to die multiple times to get to that point tho.Imo I actually liked him even when he did all that and saying he's stupider than those three MC's is a big strecth he is way smarter than them tbh and most of his deaths are unavoidable because it is sally out of the blue.
@@nocebo5792 Except he was still pretty relatable and enjoyable to see in season 1. I dont always want to see my main characters doing the right thing, hell, I dont even do the right thing most of the time. It was supposed to be show people “This is REALLY how you guys would act if you got sent to a parallel world”. Which is true, you anime fans are so entitled and selfish and REFUSE to see anything from anyone else point of view. Anime otakus want to see the main character win easily, because they want to escape from their personal faults. Thats why people dont like seeing Subaru fail. Im sure YOU wouldn’t act like Subaru, but thats not the point. The point is, if you or I were in his situation, we would fuck up just as much as him. I’m tired of seeing these main characters without any flaws. Its fucking boring and not realistic whatsoever. He didn’t just randomly get over his faults, he agonized and got reminded by people constantly. And he even reveals in ep 18 that’s hes always been like this. And he felt like he couldn’t change. Subaru had been living a sedimentary life, he got prideful because he got so many accomplishments. It went to his head. Thats why he was able to “get over it”. It was a product of his actions in THAT world. With the support from Rem, he was able to SLOWLY move forward. He still fought with Julius and hated him. He still made mistakes and got angry too much. He still relied on others to do things for him. It wasn’t out of nowhere, he was the same Subaru. It just took him a while to get control over his emotions. Thats why me and so many other people like his character. Look at the people who replied to you, and look literally anywhere else in the community. Most people like Subaru. They find him relatable. He has issues but he’s not entirely evil.

Well worth.
That’s why Echidna is best girl 👑
It’s so depressing when he tries to save someone but while trying to find a way to do it people just look down on him, hate him, or just feel disappointed in him. I felt so bad for him when Emilia kept dying and every time he came back she would just be mad at him and scold him saying that he was damaging her reputation also how every other candidate would make fun of him, put him aside, or lie to him for their own scheme even at his most desperate.

@@AbderrahmenLahyani Agreed but Re:Zero dialogue and Gatari's dialogue are really different and great in their own ways. Can’t believe Charlie, a pro gamer and wife stealer didn’t call return by death respawning
Reloading describes it better than respawning
Subaru doesn't respawn, he loads a checkpoint. Respawn would mean he returns after his death and everyone is still dead.
Respawning means you died but when you come back everything you already did already happened. For example if you say kill 30 monsters and the 31st kills you, when you respawn there aren't gonna be 31 monsters. There will be one. Reloading is the correct term here

And the transition from death to checkpoint is instant, so when he respawns he feels it slightly still for a moment.
Never any easy ways to die as well, so you have to get creative with gravity or sharp implements
and there's no lag when he dies and comes back to the present, he still feels the pain which fucking sucks, it's why at times he losses his mind

Even when you know that everything can be reset, the stakes never really fall flat like other “time travel” stories or when deaths are retconned. It’s always tense enough, while also cooling down often enough to not make it tiring.

Unlike other isekai anime. Ugh

I know this whole thing sounds very pretentious and even I myself was reminded of the Rick and Morty copypasta but I just had to get this outta my system, it's been literally brewing in me for years now. finally someone fucking gets it. i love the type of people that didnt get pissed after ep 18 because they understood subaru.
subaru tries hard because of his past failures and has deluded himself to thinking hes worthless.
this series is just reverse escapism with advice. this series shows us a protag that seems like a mirror for us and puts this protag in an isekai that ironically reality checks him frequently despite the fact that the isekai genre is purely escapism.
the show tells us what to do and what not to do. it highlights the deadly sins and shows us a better path instead of giving in to these sins.
subaru is a mirror for the audience and thats why everytime something bad or good happens to him we either relate to it or feel thankful for him. and this is why "Love yourself more" was so impactful. because the audience also needed those words.

Yes mate I feel the same way oh and the drama too

The best thing Re:Zero does is that it never gives the audience the feeling that "oh whatever, this bad thing happened but subaru can just die again". Probably because he usually accomplishes a lot of events in one life and dying during one event forces him to overcome difficult obstacles that he may have gotten lucky overcoming in his previous life.

Maybe then you should recommend your friend SSS Class Suicide Hunter, who has the same ability, going back by 24 hours when he dies.
