She knew Subaru well enough at this point to know he loves Emilia, and Rem's confession didn't change that. This episode wasn't about setting up their relationship, but about digging Subaru out of the lowest point he'd ever been in.

I watched this show way later than when it first came out, like some time last year. When it got to this episode I had flashbacks in my mind like "OH NO, it's THAT scene/anime". I remember it being on every meme side and you couldn't escape the "I love Emilia" wherever you went. I felt bad for Rem but my standpoint on the matter is still that Subaru did nothing wrong and this is the outcome that even Rem wanted for him, all the waifu war crap was bs ^^
I remember first watching this episode back in January 2019 and completely forgetting the waifu wars existed as I was too caught up in my own emotions and thinking how this has become peak fiction. It was only after that I thought, "Wait a minute..." and sure enough, from hearing other's first hand experiences, I got my answer. Granted, I knew that it was a "slightly tamer" version of DitF, but I never realized the full extent of the toxicity up till this point. Seeing this reaction now and hearing the constant use of the word "trash", it really is an eye opener for me. I now fully understand the frustration true Re Zero fans must of felt back in 2016 dealing with the normies' waifu wars and the rapid spread of misinformation through memes that gave the fanbase a bad rep. What's worse is that one of the comments above stated that on Patreon their saltiness continues to season 2. SEASON 2. I really wanted to spend this time not only analyzing the characters' emotional states/payoff and how its writing solidified itself as a masterpiece, but also detailing how much of an impact it had on my own life as well. I, or anyone for that matter, shouldn't have to explain basic information explicitly shown on behalf of their lack of attention span, resulting in missing the entire point of a scene. To be fair, I don't what I expected coming from a Dragon Ball themed reaction channel, but nonetheless it is still a huge disappointment.

Apparently the anime miss represents the scene a little bit, as he was really just confirming that he was back to his normal self rather than out right rejecting her. What I remember most about that episode was Subaru tapping into my own low sense of self worth and just pouring it all out, rather than some ridiculous waifu war.

A large portion of the point of this arc was that Emilia did not owe Subaru a relationship because he did so much for her, especially when he does stuff that ends up hurting both of them all while Subaru uses Emilia as an excuse for his horrible behavior. That's not how real relationships or love works. As an extension of that, Subaru does not owe Rem a relationship for all that she's done for him. He does not have to accept the confession if he does not want to. Once again, obligation is not a good basis for a relationship, and if Subaru does not feel the same way he just doesn't feel the same way. As for why he loves Emilia.....it's quite simple honestly. She saved him more than a lot of people tend to realize. He gave him a job, a place to live, saved his sanity in episode 8 when he was on the verge of breaking down, saved him from an early 1st death to the thugs during his first life, and is just a very good friend to him. Subaru views Emilia as his savior, just as Rem views Subaru as her savior. Meanwhile, his start with Rem was....(*flashes back to brutal torture and having his head smashed in).....rough. As a final point, I do want to bring up that Rem wanted Subaru to reject her. The Subaru she loves is the one that adores Emilia and everyone in the mansion, not a coward who was about to run away and wanted to take her along with him as a consolation prize. She literally smiles and makes a joke after he says "I love Emilia." This is what she wanted to happen. I apologize if anything I said here seemed rude or disrespectful, I just wanted to pipe in with my thoughts on this. I don't care who Subaru ends up with personally, I just dislike the notion that he's an "idiot" or "in the wrong" for not picking Rem. People almost always talks about how rem killed subaru in other timelines, but that makes no sense. He saved rem in that arc exactly because he decided to forgive and accept rem, ram, etc. He doesnt care for that, he reject her not because he hates or fears her, but because he wants to be with emilia in a relation, even though he loves rem almost as much as emilia (he did not throw her away, after all, he suicided to try and save her, rem is one of the things subaru will always want to be with in his future). Every year on Subaru's birthday (April 1st), the author writes an IF story. Named after the 7 deadly sins, they are branches in the story where Subaru makes different decisions. One of them is if Subaru doesn't reject Rem and they run away together and get married. Its the Sloth IF Story I think. Its pretty good, some new characters are introduced and they end up having 2 kids together, a boy and a girl.

He literally offered everything she couldve wanted with full seriousness, but all she wanted most was for him to be happy and understanding she's there to support him. Even if he cant love her the way she'd dream about, that's not her top concern. She wants to see Subaru stand up again, to push forward, to be strong and confident. She cares more for his emotional well being than her own desires to have him as a husband, and I think that's very admirable.
Yeah He just fell for Emilia first before Rem but he loves Rem as much as Emilia, Season2 is basically how Subaru is doing everything to save Rem after saving emilia in Season 1.

Thats cuz subaru SAVED rem from her past thats why rem’s attachment towards subaru is so strong. In emilia’s case, subaru did help her, but she don’t remember most of the moments spent with subaru cuz that happened in previous loops. Hence emilia says to subaru that the image of emilia in subaru’s head is amazing, she can understand anything, but the current emilia she cannot understand him. Plus emilia’s backstory has not been resolved yet unlike rem’s.

I'm not a part of any anime fan circle so maybe I'm out of the loop with the rest of the "community" but, while I did initially dislike Subaru's answer when this came out I still understood it because I payed attention to the show and picked up on the clues. I personally feel that it's reactors that are particularly guilty of this behavior due to the need to commentate on the episode as it's happening (since it could be considered copyright infringement if they just uploaded a video of them just watching and not providing commentary). They talk over a lot of things and make jokes which is fine but it does cause them to miss out on context clues. Again, I don't talk to or look at forums where the general anime only community would be on so I could be wrong.

Subaru, now back to his senses, told Rem exactly how he feels so as to not give her false hope or lead her on. She already knew this of course, so she brazenly accepted to help him. Just because you do things for the individual you're in love with, does not equate to them owing you jack. This is why Emilia told Subaru to fuck off after he white knighted for her, and that's why Subaru told Rem he loved Emilia.

At the prologue, the whole reason he tried to save her was out of responsibility of knowing she would die, not because he loved her. During the mansion arc, emilia didn't really do anything with subaru except that lap pillow part, and most of the story point is about subaru and the twins. And of course, during this arc, his relationship with emilia got worse, whereas with rem, we get to see them growing a lot closer. Which is why during this part, his rejection comes of tasteless, because we as viewers literally saw no reason why he would love her. Like, take a moment to remember what subaru is with emilia in the past episodes, he literally does nothing but flirting

But at this point he hasn't been in the world for little more then about a week, maybe 10 days. I remember first watching this episode back in January 2019 and completely forgetting the waifu wars existed as I was too caught up in my own emotions and thinking how this has become peak fiction. It was only after that I thought, "Wait a minute..." and sure enough, from hearing other's first hand experiences, I got my answer.
Granted, I knew that it was a "slightly tamer" version of DitF, but I never realized the full extent of the toxicity up till this point. Seeing this reaction now and hearing the constant use of the word "trash", it really is an eye opener for me. I now fully understand the frustration true Re Zero fans must of felt back in 2016 dealing with the normies' waifu wars and the rapid spread of misinformation through memes that gave the fanbase a bad rep.
What's worse is that one of the comments above stated that on Patreon their saltiness continues to season 2. SEASON 2. I really wanted to spend this time not only analyzing the characters' emotional states/payoff and how its writing solidified itself as a masterpiece, but also detailing how much of an impact it had on my own life as well. I, or anyone for that matter, shouldn't have to explain basic information explicitly shown on behalf of their lack of attention span, resulting in missing the entire point of a scene. To be fair, I don't what I expected coming from a Dragon Ball themed reaction channel, but nonetheless it is still a huge disappointment.

Apparently the anime miss represents the scene a little bit, as he was really just confirming that he was back to his normal self rather than out right rejecting her. What I remember most about that episode was Subaru tapping into my own low sense of self worth and just pouring it all out, rather than some ridiculous waifu war.

If anything, good on Subaru for not leading her on and making his intentions clear. He's loved Emilia day one and Rem knows it, his rejection isn't a surprise to her (nor should it be a surprise to anyone else). If anything, Subaru declaring his feelings and conveying the conviction and determination behind them is what Rem *wanted* to hear. It was that determination to never give up on those he cared about that she fell for to begin with, so if anything this is the best answer he could've given her.

A large portion of the point of this arc was that Emilia did not owe Subaru a relationship because he did so much for her, especially when he does stuff that ends up hurting both of them all while Subaru uses Emilia as an excuse for his horrible behavior. That's not how real relationships or love works. As an extension of that, Subaru does not owe Rem a relationship for all that she's done for him. He does not have to accept the confession if he does not want to. Once again, obligation is not a good basis for a relationship, and if Subaru does not feel the same way he just doesn't feel the same way.
As for why he loves Emilia.....it's quite simple honestly. She saved him more than a lot of people tend to realize. He gave him a job, a place to live, saved his sanity in episode 8 when he was on the verge of breaking down, saved him from an early 1st death to the thugs during his first life, and is just a very good friend to him. Subaru views Emilia as his savior, just as Rem views Subaru as her savior. Meanwhile, his start with Rem was....(*flashes back to brutal torture and having his head smashed in).....rough.
As a final point, I do want to bring up that Rem wanted Subaru to reject her. The Subaru she loves is the one that adores Emilia and everyone in the mansion, not a coward who was about to run away and wanted to take her along with him as a consolation prize. She literally smiles and makes a joke after he says "I love Emilia." This is what she wanted to happen.
I apologize if anything I said here seemed rude or disrespectful, I just wanted to pipe in with my thoughts on this. I don't care who Subaru ends up with personally, I just dislike the notion that he's an "idiot" or "in the wrong" for not picking Rem.
I hope my analysis/perspective was at the very least somewhat interesting to read.

One of them is if Subaru doesn't reject Rem and they run away together and get married. Its the Sloth IF Story I think.
Its pretty good, some new characters are introduced and they end up having 2 kids together, a boy and a girl.
The lust one is no good though. That one was just made as a joke and was just a subura power fantasy harem story.

Thats cuz subaru SAVED rem from her past thats why rem’s attachment towards subaru is so strong. In emilia’s case, subaru did help her, but she don’t remember most of the moments spent with subaru cuz that happened in previous loops. Hence emilia says to subaru that the image of emilia in subaru’s head is amazing, she can understand anything, but the current emilia she cannot understand him. Plus emilia’s backstory has not been resolved yet unlike rem’s.

I'm not a part of any anime fan circle so maybe I'm out of the loop with the rest of the "community" but, while I did initially dislike Subaru's answer when this came out I still understood it because I payed attention to the show and picked up on the clues. I personally feel that it's reactors that are particularly guilty of this behavior due to the need to commentate on the episode as it's happening (since it could be considered copyright infringement if they just uploaded a video of them just watching and not providing commentary). They talk over a lot of things and make jokes which is fine but it does cause them to miss out on context clues. Again, I don't talk to or look at forums where the general anime only community would be on so I could be wrong.

She leaves Subaru in Ep 13 because she believes it will protect him, even though she genuinely wished to remain with him, and was frustrated and confused with his actions, yet held no hostility towards him.
Also, Rem did this for Subaru because she loved him and he had previously done this for her.
In episode 8, Emilia basically does the same thing for Subaru, even though it makes her uncomfortable, JUST BECAUSE SHE WANTED TO HELP HIM.

Subaru, now back to his senses, told Rem exactly how he feels so as to not give her false hope or lead her on. She already knew this of course, so she brazenly accepted to help him.
Just because you do things for the individual you're in love with, does not equate to them owing you jack. This is why Emilia told Subaru to fuck off after he white knighted for her, and that's why Subaru told Rem he loved Emilia.

At the prologue, the whole reason he tried to save her was out of responsibility of knowing she would die, not because he loved her. During the mansion arc, emilia didn't really do anything with subaru except that lap pillow part, and most of the story point is about subaru and the twins. And of course, during this arc, his relationship with emilia got worse, whereas with rem, we get to see them growing a lot closer. Which is why during this part, his rejection comes of tasteless, because we as viewers literally saw no reason why he would love her. Like, take a moment to remember what subaru is with emilia in the past episodes, he literally does nothing but flirting

I now think that what I was saying is that once Subaru resets, so does his relationship with the other cast, so if in one loop Subaru gets animosity from a character, in other that character might love him, and with that his opinion on the caracter also changes. Subaru already forgave Rem not long after being killed by her, as seen by him killing himself just to try to save her. And Subaru does love Rem, just not as much as Emilia. So the argument of the oc being "it's okay for him to have rejected her cause she murdered him in different loops" is invalid, as that doesn't matter to Subaru, and so shouldn't matter to the viewer.

After she listed all of her reasons for loving him (one of them being that he never runs away) he realized that he can't abandon the others in the mansion, or his feelings for Emilia. He still loves Rem and cares for her deeply but he fell for Emilia first so she takes top priority even if part of his heart belongs to Rem. Sorry for the long comment but it gets a bit tiring seeing everybody hate on him so heavily for choosing to save Emilia (although Rem is still best girl)

The amount of people that are pissed off because of subaru rejecting rem is exactly what the author wants god damn teppei's writing is just insane, this episode is pretty much a test to see if you will actually stick to the story of re:zero that is a pure masterpiece instead of abandoning the show because the MC rejects a girl for a girl that he truly loves and this eps also shows how many people would have given up half way through everything they do for a mediocre life rather than to actually work and get a far better life than a mediocre one what a truly slothful moments, Subaru is truly one of the best mc in anime of all time

I get why ya'll are mad at Subaru's decision and I felt the same way too but on the real, he stayed true to himself, and he was honest to Rem who he still loves and cares for which is something FUCKBOYS ARE NOT. I also read somewhere that the author didn't want Subaru to conform to the viewers' wishes and change his purpose and himself. He also says the viewers tend to forget all the good he did to Rem and their relationship has been a give and take relationship the whole time. I think we also forget that Emilia also cares for Subaru and tries to help him when she can.
As shafted as Rem was she murdered Subaru multiple times and honestly if I was him I wouldn't have chosen either of them and just went on my own adventures in that world to find my own party that'll ride or die for me.

Nah, she knew he loved Emilia and that him suddenly suggest such a wild thing like run away together was not in his character. That's why she refused to go, dumped her feelings for him, and supported him so that he could realize for himself. It's a fantasy, unrealistic scenario of a bitter sweet conclusion to a love triangle where no feelings are hurt, everyone understands, and relationships grow stronger for it
reminder: rem crushed one of his legs, cant blame him for a little bias.

Although I hate Subaru's crush I respect his loyalty although he was down to runaway at first, Rem is undoubtedly best girl

the subaru that does not give up, the subaru that loves emilia, thats the subaru rem is in love with. the subaru that forces to give up on his love for emilia and run away with rem while leaving everyone to die is not the subaru shes in love with, thats why she was glad subaru reject her and was being honest with his feelings, that meant that just like what he did to her she "reset his time from zero" she saved him like he saved her.

I watched this show way later than when it first came out, like some time last year. When it got to this episode I had flashbacks in my mind like "OH NO, it's THAT scene/anime". I remember it being on every meme side and you couldn't escape the "I love Emilia" wherever you went on the internet. I felt bad for Rem but my standpoint on the matter is still that Subaru did nothing wrong and this is the outcome that even Rem wanted for him, all the waifu war crap was bs ^^

@@reggie1847 I mean bro, Subaru has always wanted Emilia and after several severe traumas after dying multiple times has gone mad and decided he wanted to do some dumb shit, Rem knows he wouldn’t do something like that and figured out something is wrong, gets Subaru back in his senses and they want him to just choose her over Emilia, Don’t get me wrong, I like Rem most up till the latest re zero episode even if she doesn’t exist in season 2 basically, but he’s just a normal dude

He didnt even discarded Rem there, he actually invites her to be with him and make sure he does things right, like how is that trash. Subaru picked the right choice all the way.

Analyze the scene first, Rem isnt even making Subaru choose, Rem cornered him into saving Emilia and made him her hero. Subaru dont need to choose there bro. Rem literally said "no" at the idea of running away right at the start. Rem knew what she had to do to redeem her hero back.
