"If your not in school then draw a lot, if your in school then they're gonna force you to do it." I found that little bit very funny, because its so true. XD
I really want to express my thanks to you Feng, your words always inspire me personally and motivate me, I always come back to your videos just to get that push back to work. Thank you.
This is all really helpful information. It's nice to find someone that puts all this into perspective, tells you what to expect in the field, and how to get better. I just found these videos today and I'm officially hooked. Thanks for taking the time to make and post these!
i love how you geek out talking about those inspirations. Makes me want to spend some money on things that inspire me. It is true, what you surround yourself with impacts you strongly.
Feng, you are probably one of the most inspirational people out there. I can thank you enough for giving us these tutorials man. I swear one day i will walk through the doors of your school man.
Motivation has always been really hard for me keep when it came to working on my art. Feng has managed to condense a pep talk that I've needed for two years in just under twenty minutes! I'm running over to the craft store now to stock up on paper, pens, books and markers. The apathy is dead, I'm finally feeling inspired! Thanks Feng.
Awesome video. There is so much positive advice in this. You gotta listen to someone like this. Find someone you look up to, get the information in their brain, and put it in yours!
Feng, I love how you pack so much important information into every video. A true professional, you are. Needless to say, I was ecstatic when I found out about this channel. I've seen plenty other out there...plenty... None of them hold a candle to this one. Now to go back and watch all of your videos! Thanks again.
This video brings my mind open again. Laziness sometimes got me for about a month. After listen to this great inspiration, I'm back to practice track again. Thanks Feng. Although u are busy, u still take some of your space time to show us some great hint and great advice. Again thx for this great inspiration.
Thanks! Very helpful video!! People think i'm crazy saying i'm too old for buying toys and figures. But the ones I buy are detailed models of tanks, planes and mechas like gundam, it helped me a lot in mechanical drawing and understanding how this machines work. Thanks for the video again you sure helped a lot of artists!
Because of this video, I start my collection, my major is Computer Animation. You really open my eye, Feng. The Concept Art is such an important process in video game and animation industry. I just wanna say many thanks to you. By the way, those books are expensive and hard to find. But I will try to get them as much as I can. These books are really really really nice inspiration stuff. Again, Thank you so much, dude
This guy (Feng Zhu i mean) is a FREAKING LEGEND! Everytime when I watch his videos it's like a shoot of inspiration for me :) great artist, great person great great xd Greetings from Poland !
You definitely have a place among legends, Feng Zhu. Thank you for sharing us some of your knowledge. I'm sure most of us here appreciate what you're doing.
i have been considering heavily on becoming an artist in the gaming and movie industry. within the last few months, i go to barnes an noble 2-3 days out of the week for inspiration. i have not been so sure about something as i am about becoming a concept artist/character/model/level designer, and i totally believe everything you said in this video. about inspiration, and reference. the only thing i need to do now is to keep drawing. i got the inspiriation and the motivation.
oh my gosh i love your little episodes. you are a total inspiration. if you hadnt said that you went to design school in the nineties i would have guessed you were in your early twenties. :p i agree with what you are saying. i love the quote: you dont do something till you get it right. you do it till you cant get it wrong.
Hey guys , the videos are put to good use :) . I personally am in classical animation school and draw a LOT ( in school , in subway , on the buss , at home, in the park and so) My favorite method is to watch arownd me for inspiration . I have maby over 50 sketches done on the road this week just by watching what's around me. It's all nature , just observe nature. This combined with good artbooks is a way to compare how different ppl aproach nature differently and take what you can from it.
Thanks for the information and ADVICE! In fact i dont draw much but i must keep doing it and draw mroe. I was surprised by the 10 pictures per day but now that i think its not so much compared to the idnustry demands. If i dont draw so much then i will never be a concept artist.
Wow! I've been following your channel for ages now. You're definitely my favorite concept artist out there. I had no idea you had a book out. Great news, I'll definitely be purchasing it soon!
i wonder if i can live on the streets and eat out of trash cans while i spend my life savings going to school at FZD. do you think the staff would mind my smell?
To get to 10,000 hours in 5 years you'd need to draw about 5.5 hours every day. 7.7 hours per day if you take weekends off, so essentially a full time job. He really does mean draw A LOT. That said, thanks so much for these videos! I can't think of a better free product that I have ever come across.
thank you so much, that you take the time to show and explain us so many things about drawing and design, i respect you, because of this! Your advices are really really helpful, i think for every one! Nice, and please, keep this video advices going, your such a nice guy! I lean a lot by your videos, thank you very much
Same boat as you but I'm a junior. When Feng started in the industry though it was nowhere near as competitive as it is today and he didn't just jump from high school to concept art. He attended architecture school for a while and then switched over to industrial design. As for advice, just keep a sketchbook with you all the time and draw whenever a chance presents itself.
Thank you for the interest in our book. FZD Art of Book: Foundation 01 is now available. For more information, please refer to FZD School website. Thanks!
Hi @PeterParker, FZD Foundation 01 books are currently sold out. However, do keep a lookout on our Facebook page and website for updates on our future books. :)
I've been replacing coffee with Japanese Matcha tea seems to give me the same amount of energy and help with the dehydration aspect of coffee. Plus its got 7 times the antioxidants as regular green tea.
Oh no! I see it's sold out! I just now found out about the book but Feng Zhu is my absolute favorite concept artist. I show everyone his work and videos I meet. He's definitely a huge inspiration to me and everyone I have show his work too. I sincerely hope it comes back in stock.
Hey Dustin, thanks for the advice. the thing i am worry is that there is not enough time for me to improve.. as there are school works and other non related stuff to commit to, i feel that my improvement is just too slow. Also, the more i dig information through the web reading tutorials and watching livestreams, the more i notice that lots of successful illustrators dont really go to art school. In fact, most of them quit school just to draw. This makes me confuse in what to do..
Congrats!, I was so into anime in my teens that it was my no1 inspiration and IMO that really set me back when it came to progressing as an artist(because the style is to generic, stiff at times).
he's said in one of his videos he has no interest in making an art book, but he did release an art book of the best works of his students from fzd school recently.
Thank you Feng Zhu. Dont forget to start a online school for us lol. All you have to do is record the class. After that all you have to do is check students homewrok and give feedback. I been taking online classes with other pros. Thats what they do. Please cosider it.
Thanks for the great comments everyone. I'll cover the reference stuff on this week's design cinema (recording tomorrow). Everyone has different ways for connecting refs, but I'll share my own personal method. I don't have a book. Maybe one day. :) Too many other projects cooking in the pot right now.
I can't wait to start a school of arts, it'll force me to draw more which is pretty good! At home, I tend to get too lazy and draw once a week, sometimes not even! :S This video was really good, and it motivated me a bit ! :D Thanks!
Makes sense to me. If you claim to be a big history buff, but you don't own any history books (physically or digitally), than people won't take you seriously. The same goes for artists.
i really must ask feng but do you have your own concept book ? i hear you school may be putting one out soon when may that be ? you and your work is what made me want to try be more adventurous in my work and get more into scenes and worlds all that amazing stuff you see in movies
What kind of sucks about drawing is that sometimes you're hyped and ready to draw and then you don't have any idea what to draw. So is it good to build up a visual library first so you can be filled with visuals before drawing them and practicing? Or is it good to try to draw for movies and video games you've seen or played before and try to not copy what was already there but adding on new things so you can design better? I don't know where to really start. Time is money after all
I love how at 8:07 you try to set that book's cover face down to hide the nipples, and it would seem that the backside was perhaps not an improvement, and it's just sorta like, "uh, er, there's no good way to set this... moving on".
Hi Feng! You're a really big inspiration form me :D I decided that I will be a concept artist because of you. Righ now I'll start my second year at The Secondary School of Art at Pécs, Hungary. Anyway, I saw that you sell your book, but I didn't have the money to buy it. Today I went back to the site and checked if I can still order one but it's sold out. Do you know when will be the next time I can buy a copy of the book?

Feng I can't thank you enough for the insight. A few years to go yet.

I learn more from him then i learn from my design teachers in school, because he wants me to learn something and for that i want to say: THANK YOU!
THANK GOD I FOUND THIS CHANNEL! Just when I lost all hope in my one 'talent' (Drawing), I discovered you! THANKS A LOT!
Very Motivational and Intellectually helpful. Thank You!

thank you for your insight, you have helped me understand why I don't improve much. very helpful indeed. Time to crack the whip and draw more.
you are an inspiration...

fantastic, thanks feng

Thanks! Even drawing for a hobby, I find your videos very helpful.
i wonder if i can live on the streets and eat out of trash cans while i spend my life savings going to school at FZD. do you think the staff would mind my smell?
In our currency, their 1year course is more than 1million peso. I'll just practice alone for now.
@@frogwithapickaxe8910 Oh, may I know how you got that information?
To get to 10,000 hours in 5 years you'd need to draw about 5.5 hours every day. 7.7 hours per day if you take weekends off, so essentially a full time job. He really does mean draw A LOT. Hey Dustin, thanks for the advice.

Feng should make his own art book, he is inspiring all of us and if we go far in digital design i would be proud to have his book on my shelf. :3
