The line, "Still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest" is more appropriate than ever. Paul Simon at 82 !
80
Indeed!
The back up should have been back
I wish the Audience sang
Ain't that the truth!
I hope I look that good at 80. Great post.
By golly, the old man can still jam that guitar !!!! I love it !
The greatness of Paul Simon cannot be overstated . And through his wonderful music he will live on long after all of us have gone . Excellent video , Thank You so Much for sharing it .
So True
Hearing such beautiful music in 2022, who knew?
Man, the number of fantastic musicians on that stage is amazing. Lucius (well 2/5ths of them), Rihannon Giddens, Natalie Merchant, Nathaniel Rateliff, just an amazing group.
You know I use to be a freelance writer and had over 200 articles published. But there are no words that can truly convey how great of a song writer, singer and performer. Paul Simon is!
Thanks to Paul and Jerry and friends.
So fine is the music and the minds who create and share it with us all.
Wow Natalie Merchant too! Joni, Natalie, Paul... My TOPS!!! ❤️ I miss seeing them regularly - sending These 3 SO MUCH LOVE and GRATITUDE. I'm Ecstatic 😊
I ❤️ regards from 🇵🇹
Do you know Paul Simon? personaly?
Paul Simon is a true national treasure.

This is ment as a positive, sick is used as good, great,it's was used as slang at one point. SIMON is a great singer song writer,I do like folk singers.
👍👍
Comment s' appelle ce guitariste acolyte de Paul Simon, s'il vous plaît ?
❤️🎶❤️🎶
Nice to hear him at the Newport Folk Festival, but it's too bad he can't occasionally do a program with Art. Seems like renown and fortune shouldn't get in the way of friendship. I suppose it's hard to imagine details. However, a fabulous songwriter and musician.
Where's Garfunkel? Oh that's right, he got tossed off the boat by a giant EGO.
Not sure where you got this one-sided story, but it's very clear if you read through a few articles on the subject that they both had giant egos, and both, at times, said and did shitty things to each other. If you like I can provide links to some articles.
Where’s Artie?
It's really is sad to see Pual Simon on stage he's beyond his prime. And that's easy to see without looking too far. I Love you Simon stay healthy
Wouldn't call it sad.. Perhaps it'll make you sad to reflect that we all grow old, but the man is still singing and performing. I think many of us are very lucky to have witnessed one of the greats no matter their age, and there were many of this era.
This festival has me in a puddle tears, for my lost youth, lost dreams and more
The tenderness of folk music still melts my heart completely. ❤️
And me
You just spoke for an entire generation of music lovers.
We forget that we are all infinite beings in these physical bodies and have capacity to change anything we desire, Jesus still lives and after 2000 years still looks pi damn good. You t what you think 💓😁💓
Hey...same here baby....don't u cry... ;)
I get it. Amen.
Paul Simon is a national treasure. With all his other talents for singing/songwriting, it is easy to forget what a great guitar player he is.
Is a world treasure too
He is a WORLD treasure !!
We need to protect him at all costs! 💛 We can't lose him! The best ever! 🤗
true honor to hear this man play; thank you Paul for a lifetime of songs. these songs are the fabric of my life.
Amy- you are the Great Folk Fest chronicler. Thanks for EVERYTHING
My pleasure. Thank you for caring 🎼❤️
We are in Louisville for Billy. The amazing music and different communities rocking out this weekend is mind blowing.
❤
What did you record this with?
Our greatest songwriter. 60 years of incredible words and music. Thanks Paul!
One of the greatest songwriters without a doubt, but I have to believe the majority will lean towards Dylan as the greatest.
@@mcraft2240 That's why superlatives suck! (you didn't use one-the person above you )Cuz they make people argue! How 'bout we just say both are important, influential, poetic...and SPECIAL, and call it a day? 😀Cuz then a feminist like me will come along, tired of this man's world, and I'd say "Joni" so...I try to avoid "the best, the worst, the..."superlatives, at all costs
Me emocionei muito 😢
@@mcraft2240 I agree with you ,where’s Dylan now ,Simon Greatest American Songwriter EVER.👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
I was fortunate enough to see him live in Glasgow, UK, a few years ago. Despite his age he put on a good show that was unique - he didn't just rest on his past success and songs but made it a special and well thought out concert. Poet and song writer - a rare combination!
Its always better see him at any age than not
Amy , you are so generous to share these magic moments with us- thank you so very much.
The voice of generations! A pivotal musical force! Immortal and immeasurable! His lyrics speak to time eternal! The voice of the common man! That is Paul Simon! Timeless!
This is great. Paul Simon still rocks! Thanks for posting this video.
What an absolute legend. His music has inspired and augmented so many moments of my life and as a musician. Incredible performer.
For some reason, this had me balling like a baby. Positively beautiful.
same
This song has touched my soul since I was 14yrs old...to this day breaks me down at 68yrs. May we all be touched and thereby still have hope for humanity!!!
@@lynnmusiccowgirlely122 "Hope for humanity" may very well be the key takeaway. Like many people, I've been mired in negativity and divisive BS lately. This performance woke something up inside me. Shook something loose. It reminded me of that hope.
@@BrianLarney Love is wise, hatred is foolish. -Bertrand Russell
@@jimmyjambon9206 Love that. Thanks for posting that quote.
NOTHING tops the beauty of the human singing voice (as proven here), nothing
Amy, you did it again! 2nd day in a row that a new day has begun SO special, because you shared these amazing videos. I have dreamt before about hearing Natalie & Paul sing together-AND IT HAPPENED!
The old man sings to us all. His heart pours out the words and brings us to tears. We love you, Paul Simon!
This is a fantastic surprise to see Paul Simon singing this great, classic song with these wonderful artists such as Natalie Merchant, thank you so much for posting this! This is also a great quality video, thank you again! 🎸
Brad in Cleveland
Bob Dylan, Paul Simon & Stevie Wonder.... the Mt. Rushmore of American songwriters in the winter of their years. Oh, how I will weep when they are gone.
Get ready.
😢
Just watched the Joni M videos and then this. It was a great year at Newport!
This song will never die! Paul Simon BRAVO!!!!
Paul is a national treasure.
Legend of legends💚
A National Treasure. At age 80 we don't have a lot of time left with Paul Simon....ditto Bob Dylan (81), Jerry Lee Lewis (86) and legend Brian Wilson (80).
Enjoy them while we can!
Also McCartney is 80
Their legacies will last forever.
@@guy576 I know that. Thanks. I was just talking AMERICAN artists. Sadly, we will probably lose most of these icons this decade.
yep, it looks like the sunset is setting in for good. Enjoy!
im not that far behind them - may they go on beyond me
Amazing sound and footage! I never tire of hearing this Paul Simon (and friends) classic.
Hello how are you doing?
@@Godwinpounds4333 I am fine. How are you doing?
@@karenkaribian2095 I’m doing great, it’s nice meeting with you here. Where are you texting from?
I wish there was a list of everyone up there on the stage playing and singing. Who is playing the dobro? Who are the two women in the dark pink?
I only know the 2 women are from the band, Lucius, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig. I don’t know the others.
Jerry Douglas on Dobro
@@flaviodelladioband127 THAT'S Jerry Douglas? I knew it sounded like his playing style, but others have learned how to emulate it over the years. Wow, it's been too long since the last time that I saw him.
Yes, and he's still n.1 on the Dobro
Groupies.
Great song still. I often quietly sing the chorus “Lie la lie…” while at work, most of my patients instantly know the song and join in with me, smiles all round ❤️
Thank you Paul for not wearing a backwards hat…
Paul Simon is a national fount of creativity. One of our finest artists. Damn good on SNL all those times as well.
Should have been given the Nobel prize along with Bob Dylan
Thanksgiving Turkey - THE BEST!!
Thank you Amy for this wonderful document of history.
This song is a timeless masterpiece. Thank you Paul and Amy
Paul Simon is still perhaps the finest guitar player in the world. His chording is effortless.
Tears of joy, here. What a moment. So glad we have, and have had him. We are all the better for it.
Wonderful to see him on this big stage. He is still at the top!
This was fantastic! Paul has given us some amazing music over the years. But he was in good company on that stage. Especially the guys on stage..
Lukas Nelson is even more so talented than his famous dad, Willie, and his band is phenomenal. Nathaniel Rateliff is a really amazing songwriter, singer and musician and his band is also incredible! There are many amazing artists out there, you just gotta find them! But we can thank Paul for all of his contributions to music in general. He is one of the great legends of our time, no question.
The master at work. Chokes me up, who cares if he misses a few notes.
For sure!! He wrote it right!!
Thank you Mr. Simon! Thank you for what you wrote, for the joy that you brought. Please come back to perform, even if it is only a short session.
My god is this music good
The original studio version of The Boxer has to be the most 'complete' recording ever made - immaculate lyrics, beautiful harmony, a crowd singalong chorus, melody, acoustic warmth, ethereal sound for the solo, the echoing drum hits, and the deep, rumbling sounds coming in right at the end. It's hard to think of another recording which comes close - possibly Good Vibrations, or A Day In The Life perhaps, but none which top The Boxer.
Ever hear the Allison Krauss Shawn Colvin Jerry Douglas version? Pure gold.
One of the most beautiful songs of all times...touching your sould since its day one.
@@chipdayton1625 Just watched it. It's good. 👍 The song obviously works well with a lot of arrangements, even down to one person with a guitar. It's just that that original recording has so many elements which take it to another level entirely. (IMHO 😉)
@@chipdayton1625 Why have so many women recorded this? It's written for a man (a woman would be trying to avoid the punters on 7th Avenue). Makes as much sense as a man singing Testimony by Ferron.
Growing up listening to the boxer made me cry every time and it never made sense to me why. Your comment made something click in my brain and I know why. Thanks for understanding the song so well. It will always be one of my very favorite songs
This was the first song I learned on guitar as a 15 year old some 48 years ago, and I still play it to this day. What a classic it is.
Still one of my favourite songs! Saw Paul live a few years ago in Perth W.A, totally amazing!💙
Jerry Douglas ..one of the best dobro players
I've never heard anyone better, or even as good. The funny thing is, I didn't recognize him at first due to the extra grey hair since I last saw him. So first I thought, wow this guy plays as well as Jerry! Then I scrolled down and saw his name.
Amazing song writer
The Sweats will remember that for the rest of their lives, my fav’ band with the greatest composer of contemporary songs ever, there will never, be another like him.
Pure America music at it best. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video.
Paul has aged graciously
I'm willing to bet this concert saw the biggest concentration of Subaru's in recorded history.
Hope Paul finally has the ability to actually enjoy moments like these. To have all his fame, fortune, accolades, respect & legacy tucked safely into his trunk of keepsakes, and just genuinely ENJOY these moments in his later years.
So sad that he never could manage that in his prime. He had every reason then, too.
Tons of respect & gratitude for the many songs, Paul. A fan for decades now, I've yet to be able to choose a favorite.
Be well, Sir...
One of the greatest songs ever written. It blew me away when it was first released, and it continues to effect me still; "... and the fighter still remains".
La voix est devenue un peu tremblante mais la tenue de la guitare est toujours parfaite.
J' A D O R E !!!
IL a 82 ans...j'adore center chanson!!
Moi aussi, cher(e) cousin/ cousine
This is a perfect song. One of his many!
How do you get all this awesome footage?! Take me with you?😂🤙
this just made me smile......alot
Ah, so very bittersweet. The sense of loneliness and poverty this song evoked so intensely when I first heard it in 1970 at age 14 has smoothed into soft sadness and regret. But the fighter still remains...
Have you all ever noticed there is a timelessness to real works of art?
Beautiful song...never get tired to listen to!!
Now the years are rolling by me, they are rocking me in vain, I'm older than I once was ,and younger than I'll be That's Not Unusual .it isn't strange after changes upon changes we are more or less the same after changes we are more or less the same. The missing verse :they never show. I heard Paul sing this in New York at Carnegie Hall in the 70s.
Thank you, Amy! ❤️
Still remember Paul Simon singing this on Saturday Night Live shortly after Sept 11. Stark, stunning, heartbreaking, yet so very, very triumphant. What America needed that night.
Yes, me too 🙏❤️
I am an old man, been to many concerts and will never forget the reunion tour concert of Simon and Garfunkel held in Dallas. The best concert I ever attended.
Wow!! Amazing, thank you!!
I didn't recognize Jerry Douglas right away, but I thought, shit, that sounds just like Jerry Douglas. He looks a lot greyer than the last time I saw him. He is the best!
Lebende Legende !
You are an absolute angel for giving these to us. Thank you!!!!!❤️❤️❤️
That was awesome ! thank you Amy.
My lifelong friend at 82. Thank you so much for this.
I was 14 when I saw Simon & Garfunkel in Central Park. My first concert, an amazing show.
Génial ! C'est merveilleux de voir Paul, et toujours au top, j'adore dommage qu'il ne soit pas avec Arti, ce serait bien qu'ils laissent leurs différents de côté, ce serait formidable de les voir tous les deux 😍🤝🤞

Thank you Paul!!!! A true poet who can sing and play.
What a legend.
What a beautiful beautiful blessing. Thank you
I Know we probably will never hear Paul and Artie sing together again. I've watched both Paul Simon videos in this show and man !! Listening to the power, purity, vulnerability, beauty of his aging voice makes me wonder if we as humans will be able to contain our hearts and emotions listening to those 2 harmonise again without totally breaking down in tears. Sadly I don't believe music and songwriting will ever get to this level again.
Forever lailalai.... Hymn. Epic. Paul Simon.
My favorite song 🎵 ❤️ sung by all of my favorite artists... so fucking cool 😎 ... namaste 🙏 👋
Beautiful! Jerry Douglas is awesome, too.
Amy, Thanks for these posts of the Newport Folk Festival. So great to see a slimmed down Paul Simon.
Thank you ! So much for posting this.
Saw Dylan's return there in 2002. Paul must have been special.
