When George Michael is singing this song, and he gets to the part 'ladies and gentlemen, Mr Elton John' to this day I still get goosebumps!! Those people at that concert were so lucky to experience that, and I'm jealous of every one of them. And it's a killer version of this song.
I remember this album, Elton John was so huge in the 70's and 80's, he was one of my all time favorites. "Philadelphia Freedom" and "Your Song" are two of my favorites.
"Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding"-- an absolute masterpiece; "Take Me to the Pilot"--one of his early gems that is seemingly always ignored among his great songs.; "Get Up and Dance"--lives up to its title; his rendition from his 1980 concert in Central Park is him at his best in a live format and shows him at his wackiest--he does the song in a Donald Duck outfit.😂
I can think of lots of his great songs that are ignored. Holiday Inn, Razor Face, Tower of Babel, No Shoestrings on Louise, Cage the Songbird, Border Song, Ballad of Danny Bailey, to name a few! 😢
I havnt watched yet but I swear you really need to do the George Michael and Elton John version. George Michael kills this song. Please consider doing it soon. You have no idea what George Michael can do.
I used to lie on my bedroom floor directly in front of my 2ft high solid wood speakers blasting this song. My dad (RIP) played a grand piano in our living room and I would lie under it while he played, so I've always had a heart for piano music. Elton was one of his and my favorites. My dad ever wore glasses and went through a "glasses" phase like Elton did back in the 70's. So much good music came out of that genre! ❤
I used to stand with my mom, ( RIP)we each had a hairbrush make-believe microphone, and would sing ( badly) our hearts out to this. I think this may have been the vinyl I learnt how to use the stereo on. Carefully placing the record on the player, gently lowering that bar thing, carefully pulling the lever forward to activate the stylus… AHHHH memories of the twentieth century
@@craiggillett5985 I'm so sorry for the loss of your mother. It's so nice that you had those beautiful moments together and that they remain fresh in your memory. There are those songs that can touch you and bring you back to these special moments in time and this song being one of them. Elton's songs really touch your soul. It's so beautiful that you could share times together listening to it. I feel your mom is s still watching over you and listening to this song with you. I want to bring out that you have an excellent way of describing things very eloquently. I felt as if I went back in time and was right there with you. Now every time I hear this song I will think of you and your mom and that is so beautiful. Take care ❤️
I used to put a candle in front of a speaker and watch it as the song play. A little touch of 'Skunk' and seeing the flame dance was wow. I noticed that sometimes when violins hit different notes and held them the flame would quit dancing and stand up really tall. Well, the Skunk didn't hurt either. The other thing was getting that flimsy plastic off of clothes from the cleaners. You twist it kind of tight then put a simple knot every 8 inches or so. Tape it to the ceiling and light the bottom with a bowl of water under it. The visual and sounds are very cool. Gotta be at night in a dark room.
I heard it before it’s official release on one of the LA AM radio stations. They had somehow gotten ahold of a tape recording of it. I still remember driving down the 55 fwy in Santa Ana when it came on. I loved it the first time, and every other time, I’ve heard it.
Fun fact. During the 1970s when Dusty Springfield was going through a rough time personally and professionally, she often sang back-up on Elton's songs under the pseudonym, "Gladys Thong". She used this name in the 1960s as well. Dusty, Cat Stevens, and Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys were the original backup singers on this song but it didn't work out so Toni Tennille (of Captain & Tennille fame), and Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys ended up singing on it.
@@brendahhstiles9992 My pleasure. I know Dusty sang background on "The Bitch is Back" and she was Elton's original choice to sing "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart" but she was not in a good place. Her friend and former back-up singer, Kiki Dee, stepped in and the rest is history. I love Kiki but I would have loved to have heard Dusty doing that song with Elton.
Gonna ruin the mood. Playing the song title mashup game, the dirtiest title I came up with was a Dusty Springfield/Elton John mashup: "Don't Let the Son of a Preacher Man Go Down on Me."

There's a song on this same album called "Ticking" that is absolutely epic. Elton's piano is as dynamic as anything he,or perhaps anyone, has ever done. It will seriously blow your mind. It is a kind of a deep cut but it is unforgettable. Please, please, please believe me. It is unlike anything he has done before. It will leave you speechless.
This has and will always be my favourite song. As soon as I hear that first note, there is a shiver that runs through me and then the tears. And why, every single time? You would think by now I would be immune to it, but no. To me, is one of the most gut wrenching songs ever written. Bernie's lyrics, Elton's music - no duo, imo, could ever tap into the genius of these two men. 💞 ✌❤
Another masterpiece from the master. Between Bernie Taupin's lyrics and Elton's unforgettable melody, this is an iconic song in this man's incredible catalogue.
Elton John. So many amazing songs. He has more great songs on individual albums than most bands have in their career. Not many bands/singers come close to matching the quality, innovativeness, and quantity of what he has done. Truly one of the best. He has left us a gift that will live forever.
In my opinon, this is one of many Elton John's and Bernie Taupin's masterpieces and the great thing about this dynamic duo is that even their lesser-known songs are great too! I would recommend reacting to "High Flying Bird" and "Blues For Baby and Me" as well!
One of his greatest, and one of my favorite songs of all time. He could just wring the emotion out of those lyrics with his voice, and play an understated piano that flayed your heart. Ah, well, I'm crying again.
Amber, your comment that it is a whole "production" is so interesting, so astute! It really is like a gripping emotional story, a movie without film or actors, but with a beginning describing the person's current dark and difficult situation and a plot with a series of musical stories, and it rises to a beautiful conclusion with a plea not to let all hope die for him.
There were so many great songs on the radio by Elton John! Everybody could sing them all by heart! So much feeling in his voice and words! So much a part of my growing up!!❤️❤️
A Sad Elton John song " Sorry Sems to be the Hardest Word" . It's about his mom and her not accepting him after he came out. It's so beautiful and sad 😔
This is my favorite Elton song. I became a huge fan back in 95,96...he and Billy Joel were touring together and i loved Billy Joel. The Piano men together, awesome, but Elton stole the show. He blew me away. So thankful i got to experience seeing him live.

You just made my evening. Don’t Let the Sun Go Down is so epic, powerful- and the vocals are stunning. You must react to Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding- it’s even more epic musically. You will love it.
This song in my belief is all about Elton father, who shut him out of his life. The lyric in the song make the mention of it. So beautifully put together.
Elton John is soo amazing! I think there is not one song that I dislike! “These cuts I have need time to heal!” Oh boy! that gets to me! He is a musical genius!
The lyrics of this song like most of Eltons songs were written by Bernie Taupin not Elton. Elton usually wrote the music to fit the lyrics. When they split as writing partners is when you started hearing Eltons lyrics. That period was the early 80's.
@@rogerdaly6326, I’m aware of that partnership. Bernie, continually wrote song about Elton life, his up’s and downs, his turbulent lifestyle. It was and arguably the best musically partnership ever.
Do not even waste time folks Get right to Sir Elton John's collaboration with the late great George Michael of Wham covering this song. Watch the video it's worth it 1000%! And while you're at it, if you want something truly rocking by Sir Elton, watch his cover of Pinball Wizard in the movie Tommy, by The Who... Yep... Powerful.
This song is 50 years old now and it's still as relevant today!
Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding...the first tracks of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
One of the best songs ever written, and the 2nd half is a rocker, they siad they were looking for EJ rockers, they should try this

He did an amazing version of this with George Michael. ( a duet)

They need to check out that version as well.
It's a live version with both Elton and George on stage!!! Huge production!

I was listening to this in the 70s. Love Elton John forever. He is a SIR. He was knighted by the Queen Jay many years ago. Canadian Grandma Lori. C.
His collaboration of this song with George Michael is excellent.

I understand why people like that version but this one is still the best.
I actually think it’s 10 x better than with Elton singing solo

Yes. Please watch.
This original studio version to me, is a masterpiece.

Props to Nigel Olsson on drums. He was with Elton’s band from very early on and doesn’t get enough credit for his contributions. Good singer, too.

I'm growin' tired, and time stands still before me
Frozen here on the ladder of my life
[Verse 2]
Too late to save myself from falling
I took a chance and changed your way of life
But you misread my meanin' when I met you
Closed the door and left me blinded by the light
[Chorus]
Don't let the sun go down on me (Don't let the sun)
Although I search myself, it's always someone else I see
I'd just allow a fragment of your life (Don't let the sun) to wander free
But losin' everything is like the sun goin' down on me

I can't find, oh, the right romantic line
But see me once and see the way I feel
Don't discard me just because you think I mean you harm
But these cuts I have, oh, they need love to help them heal
[Chorus]
Don't let the sun go down on me (Don't let the sun)
Although I search myself, it's always someone else I see
I'd just allow a fragment of your life (Don't let the sun) to wander free
But losin' everything is like the sun goin' down on me

Although I search myself, it's always someone else I see
I'd just allow a fragment of your life (Don't let the sun) to wander free, yeah
But losin' everything is like the sun goin' down on me
"I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues" check that one out, thanks for all you do.
You just made my evening.
Don’t Let the Sun Go Down is so epic, powerful- and the vocals are stunning.
You must react to Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding- it’s even more epic musically. You will love it.
One more of Sir Elton’s beautifully fabulous songs❤
Could be my favorite Elton John song, just love the build up and every single instrument is so spot on and powerful in the end.
The early 70s was unbelievable for Elton+ Bernie. They just couldnt miss, one hit after another...
This has to be one of my all time favorites! In my top 10 for real!
Guys I am surprised you don’t have a picture of the great Elton John behind you. 😐thanks for the song 🎧 👍🏼
Superior pianist! Beautiful voice! Outstanding song writer! Now ther’s a triple threat❤
True though Bernie Taupin writes the songs not Elton
Such a beautiful song, but Elton doesnt have a bad song. Thanx so much, needed that. Keep smilin', Peace
@@rogerdaly6326,
I’m aware of that partnership.
Bernie, continually wrote song about Elton life, his up’s and downs, his turbulent lifestyle.
It was and arguably the best musically partnership ever.
@@johninguanti2051 I'd put it right up there with McCartney/Lennon
@@rogerdaly6326 ……My sentiments exactly!
❤❤❤thank you thank you guys. My favorite my favorite Elton John song
This is my absolute favorite Elton John song. Thanks for reacting to it, and I am glad you loved it.
One of my fav songs. I think this is the first time I’ve listened to it with headphones. You really can hear the individual instruments. Tambourine!
You should watch George Michael's version where Elton comes out to sing with him half way through. Wowzers!!!!
My favorite song from Elton Thanks
Do not even waste time folks
Get right to Sir Elton John's collaboration with the late great George Michael of Wham covering this song.
Watch the video it's worth it 1000%!
And while you're at it, if you want something truly rocking by Sir Elton, watch his cover of Pinball Wizard in the movie Tommy, by The Who... Yep... Powerful.
Magical master of Musicality.
