    2:01 i am gonna signal and not to yield is a classic move everywhere in Canada. In Calgary I had a Karen honking and yelling at me for not letting her getting in front of me. At a traffic stop, she rolls down window and yelled “you cut me off again, I will hit you with my car!” I was like “how am I cutting you off when I am driving in my own lane? Mandam?”

      @@vancouversworstdrivers agreed, those signs do get a lot more prevalent once you escape the lower mainland where cyclists share the highways with motorized traffic. At most exit/entrance ramps to the highway there's those "Cross Here When Safe" signs to direct cyclists to just make a quick B-line instead of trying to say...ride down the exit or entrance/merge lanes. That said Cyclists are banned from highway 1 from I think Chilliwack to West Van..that's suicidal!

    • @louieberg2942
      @louieberg2942 3 роки тому +2

      It's an odd situation. Cars need to stop for pedestrians, because it is a crosswalk. However, if a cyclist arrives while riding their bike... the cyclist needs to yield. Unless they dismount and thereby become a pedestrian.

    • @paddington1670
      @paddington1670 3 роки тому

      "The cross here when safe" sign is there because crosswalks arent usually for cyclists and they arent usually on highways, it's a caveat theyre implementing by simply adding the sign, like they do with so many other things, no turn right on red signs etc, creating an exception for a reason. Crosswalks are not for cyclists theyre are for pedestrians; it's literally called a pedestrian crosswalk in the book. Cyclists must abide by the same rules as vehicles, that's why theyre so annoying. I wish they would just let them ride on sidewalks like we did when we were kids, to get them off the road but they have to be on the road because theyre vehicles - that's why it's still illegal to drink and cycle, you can be cited for it.

Once I had to walk that road and realized how almost impossible it was to check for all traffic before crossing because 1) you couldn't see far enough of traffic coming off the highway and 2) they are moving so fast by the time you step off the curb, there could be a car zipping by eventhough it seemed clear when you checked.

    • @RogerWKnight
      @RogerWKnight 2 роки тому

      Interesting. In Washington, there is no RCW 46.61 provision that specifically addresses this issue. You have the right of way if you are already on the freeway cruising the freeway speed or at least with the flow of traffic. If you are on a ramp entering the freeway, you have the responsibility to find a spot in the traffic to merge. If a vehicle is not yielding for you, then you try to get in behind him. Our speed laws do have some fuzzy language about the "maximum safe speed", RCW 46.61.400(1), which is sometimes less than the number on the big white signs, and that can be interpreted to being unreasonable in allowing a merger on to the freeway. Your maximum safe speed was a little lower as that would allow a safe merger and not a crash. "Speed shall be so controlled as may be necessary to avoid colliding with any person, vehicle, or other conveyance" so keep your brakes and accelerator controls in good repair! If a merging vehicle cannot get behind the vehicle in front of you, then you are following too closely, RCW 46.61.145(1). The moral hazard that comes with disk brakes with anti-locking systems is that people follow too closely at 60 mph! Making it hard to merge or change lanes.
      SoTimothy, the next time you are on our side of Zero Avenue, do avoid following too closely and try to let people merge on the freeways or change lanes. This may require tapping the brakes to slow a bit, or stomping the accelerator to get out of their way. Do the one that is appropraite!

  • @athalc

    The “cross when safe “ is a standard sign on most highways where there are cyclists. Typically at on and off ramps. Obviously it is very dangerous for cars to stop so the cyclist has responsibility here. That said, the crosswalk style lines on the road is really what messes this spot up. They do not belong, cyclists aren’t pedestrians.

      No, a defined crossing is a good thing, but only with the appropriate signage. It should say something like "cyclists yield to traffic and only cross when safe". The problem here is the lack of clarity on who has priority in the intersection.

    • @WestCoastTrafficSignals
      @WestCoastTrafficSignals 3 роки тому +1

      The crosswalk would be for pedestrians. A cyclist would have to dismount from their bike to use the crosswalk as a pedestrian. The "Cross Here When Safe" sign is meant for cyclists who do not dismount as they wouldn't have priority.

    • @spencerquimby4726
      @spencerquimby4726 3 роки тому

    Hi there. at 2:16 you mention that you don't legally have to stop to let someone into your lane.
    Is that the law? I just want to know because we currently have a claim where a truck changed lanes on top of us. There was no time for us to slow down but in case they say we should have slowed down. He doesn't have a case does he?

    • @vancouversworstdrivers
      @vancouversworstdrivers  3 роки тому +1

      Ya unless it's a merge lane they have to yield. Same with someone pulling away from being parked on the side of the road. I see people drive in the bus lane then cut in and cut people off and if they hit someone they would be at fault because you're already established in your lane.

    • @radcliffemike
      @radcliffemike 3 роки тому +1

      From icbc website “The same rule applies when you’re planning to change lanes. Make sure there is a large enough gap so that when you pull in front of another vehicle, that driver doesn’t have to slow down to avoid crashing into you. Legally, you must signal when you change lanes.”

    • @radcliffemike
      @radcliffemike 3 роки тому +1

      Also says this. Whenever you enter a lane, whether you’re pulling into traffic or changing lanes, the vehicles in the lane you’re moving into have the right‐of‐way.

    They are not parked at the light, they stopped at the light; there's a difference. When you're parked, you put your car in park with the P on your shifter for automatic transmission.

    The "cross here when safe", is not confusing. It's obvious that the sign is for the cyclist. The cars that stop to let the cyclist cross are make the situation dangerous. However the truck coming that had to brake hard to ovoid the stopped car should have seen that was slowing/stopping traffic in front of them.

    Cyclists have to yield to cars. But Vancouver has this frustrAting habit of yielding to pedestrians. That truck was paying attention but it was too big to just slam on the breaks and stop safely in that distance. ESPECIALLY if it was full. Trucks take longer to stop.

    I thought dangerous and illegal driving are against the law? ICBC and police needs to get these types of drivers off the road by any means possible. Like maybe using these videos? I mean accidents are accidents, but driving the wrong way, running red lights and hit and runs and so on needs to be stopped. In any other aspects of life you can't break the law and get away with it after especially while being recorded, but you can when driving? How does this make sense?

      The thing is if the cyclist dismounted then they could have the right of way in the crosswalk theoretically, that being said with the sign explicitly saying cross here when safe I'd say the cyclist must yield regardless.

Obviously with turning from the middle lane I think he's also 50% at fault. But the fact that Ruman sent you this makes me think he wasn't driving out of control and does this everyday weaving thru traffic... Just leave 5 minutes earlier guy. 😑 I hope ICBC got this dashcam footage to see how fast Ruman actually was traveling. If I was Ruman I woulden't want ICBC to see the video...
