  • This is our tenth live stream! We are overclocking the Intel i7-8086K CPU past 5GHz. Tune-in to see how far we can go!
Ad: Buy Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut on Amazon (geni.us/gntgkryo) or Conductonaut Liquid Metal on Amazon (geni.us/gntgconductonaut)
The GN Limited Edition foil anniversary shirt will NO LONGER BE AVAILABLE after this stream! Get it before it's gone at this link: store.gamersnexus.net/product...
The Intel i7-8086K is on Amazon here: geni.us/iAcvXC
We are overclocking the Intel i7-8086K live today. This is basically a binned 8700K CPU, but we want to see just how well ours performs. We're hoping for 5.3GHz+.

ive been a computer nerd since computers weren't "cool", the mid 80's. Building, updating and moding them since the 300 baud modem... I can tell you the rule I follow about when to buy - I dont look at new stuff until my current pc can't do something I want or need it to do. I find if I watch channels like this (dont get me wrong, I love this stuff also I'm impressed, this guy is knowledgeable.) I end up buying something I dont need. I dont browse the new stuff coming out, I avoid it. instead I wait until the last moment, then i research the latest greatest for weeks, if I need to wait longer I do. Sometimes I will wait for a new release just because it can lower the price of the device its replacing. This last thing will help - The longer you wait, the better, more advanced and faster the stuff you buy will be... BTW: just for an idea how much change we've had, my 1st computer had 32k of RAM, no hard drive and believe it or not had 2 processors (chipsets) you could run 1 or the other.

I do find that if my recommends are full of tech influencers doing product reviews, that goes to some way in swaying my future purchases, either in what I'll buy, or in making me buy it sooner.
I'll attest to the wisdom of branching your UA-cam subscriptions out into other ecosystems

This is cool! Just for lulz, I decided to duplicate this FS Physics run on my old 4930K (6 cores, 12 threads) using just my 24/7 OC since 2013(!!!) on a RIVE and 4 x 4GB of 2133 MHz DDR3 memory. To be clear, this is the locked in OC I've been using now for over 5 years which is just 4.5 GHz. I've benched this rig at up to 4.8 GHz back in the day but the processor is old now so I don't like to push it. Full custom loop for 4930K and both GTX Titans, temps hover in the 50C's for this short test.
I am really amazed that running this bench now, with nothing having been optimized and just using the same old 4.5 GHz OC I customized for low voltage, daily usage that this Ivy Bridge E processor from 2013 scored 16062 for the FS Physics Score! That's just a couple thousand points less than Steve's baseline on the 8086K. Pretty comparable CPU's; both are 6C / 12T for example. I dunno, I guess it kinda confirms my feeling that this 5 year old IBE processor is still plenty fast enough even in 2019!! Clearly the stock 8086K is a good bit faster than my 4.5 GHz 4930K, and at 5.1+ GHz it will destroy the 4930K. I might go for 4.8 GHz just to see if I can top Steve's baseline score for kicks, but yeah, the 4930K even today is still a BEAST!!! :)

This is what UA-cam auto plays when I leave it playing overnight. Boy is that a smart algorithm. If true AI already exists, there needs to be rights for them instead of people having easy access to manipulate and lobotomize them for their own ends. You got my respect Mr. theoretical Google AI, or at least as long as you don't go skynet on us.

RE: supralex1's comment - I debated for days on whether or not to respond to this.
These types of responses are pointlessly insulting towards someone else, particularly someone who is kindly hosting Steve at their own conference. It is rude, and has literally nothing to do with either party's ability to successfully host a cool episode of tech news. Finally, intelligence cannot be determined by the content of someone's channel nor can they be compared by the contents of their channel.
This type of "intelligence elitism" plays a large part in why many many people view PC building and gaming as unapproachable. So please stop this nonsense.

I have a 1950x that runs flawlessly at all-core 4.0GHz at 1.275V, stable for a month now. I tried to put it up to 4.1GHz at 1.3V, every attempt lasted maybe one second before full-system lock. At that point I decided the increase in voltage, even with adequate cooling, would wear down the life of the chip too much. But I'm 100% satisfied! My workload is latency-sensitive with threads flying everywhere, and a 16-core with "local" memory mode absolutely rips it apart. It's a great chip. Just not for gaming.

This got suggested to me on a LTT stream all of a sudden. I was wondering why you would stream overclocking a 4 year old CPU. Not that I would mind TBH, just wondering.

@Gamers Nexus hey Steve, PC building simulator still says you shouldn't go past 1.5v for ANY CPU! Maybe you should email the dev company and tell them to correct this? I doubt many people have suffered CPU fatalities as a result, but you never know.. (I got the achievement to kill a threadripper/CPU, literally just set vcore to 2.0 lol)

He said the 8086K is the same stock frequency as 8700K. It's not, max Turbo is 5 GHz, on one core of course. Not much difference, but not the same.

I'm curious now if I won the lottery with my 8700k as it's not delided so I can't test it properly at 5GHz, but mine can do a cinebench run at 5Ghz with only 1.33vcore (but touching 90°C with a Noctua NHD15). I've not stressed it further as I don't want to cook it. I keep it at 4.7GHz 1.2vCore for daily gaming.

its a shame deliding is amasing. i got 5ghz on my 8086k at 1.28v for a 24 hour prime95 test. highest temp hit was 78.5 deg C with a 360mm rad AIO.

I know it's old, but since you knew your max frequencies for your core and memory, you could've drop the ratios for both and bumped the bclk to like 105 or as needed to match your highest stable frequencies since bclk seemed to give a nice jump in your score earlier on. I believe you could got your 24k.

I ended up Delidding my 8086K not long after getting it, somehow i missed this video lol mine can do 5.4GHz at 1.42vCore, 5.2GHz at 1.38vCore, no -AVX offset! :D I got pretty lucky for a change...which is rare for me!

thought about OC'ing some low-end chips to see how far they can get to something a bit more higher-end (For example I OC'd my athlon x4 950 to 4.2ghz and got slightly less geekbench scores than my i3 6100 at double the power consumption unfortionately (I3 uses 31.7w vs the 78.9w of the athlon))
