    Anyone who says 'it's" only a pet, is someone I don't even want in my life. We lost our dog of 16.5 years last summer. We have adopted another rescue dog, and she is wonderful. But the grief for the dog we lost, Mickey, will be there for a long time. I love all animals and I wish more humans shared that compassion. I assume those of you on this site feel the same way. Hugs

    Its never easy saying goodbye. Each time we lose a dear friend I say no more…… then we find another best friend to fill the hole in our heart. Each one can never take the place of the one before as they all have their own endearing personalities.

    • @cherylkruisheer3365
      @cherylkruisheer3365 2 місяці тому +4

      This is sooooooo important to say. I have lost only 2 best hearts. I have 2 now , and I DREAD my next lose. The hole in your heart seems unseurmontable, but it does not be so large that another heart can’t come in. The only way it stays open is by your refusal to let anyone else come in. Pain maybe never go away, but love will ALWAYS find its way back into your heart. It’s up to you how long that will take. Why do you chose to be without when there are more hearts out there looking for you to love them❤️. It’s a terrible pain, but living without love and puppy dog eyes is WAY more painful. Someone out there needs you. Say, “Yes”. I will love you too.

Without her, I would never have made it through the grief. God Bless.🧸🐾

    I am so very sorry for your loss, my dear. But, also thank you so much for taking the time to talk about this subject. So many people don't understand the pain. Even some pet owners don't think how badly it hurts. I have had dogs and cats all my life. As an adult with no child maybe it hurts a little more even. I tell people as much as it hurts, but the love and different personalities of each one makes the experience of owing dogs and cats so much worth it. I got my Bella, a beautiful German Shepherd (profile picture) from our local animal shelter and i got her only a few months after both my other dogs passed within six months of each other. I didn't think I can manage the pain, but having Bella helped me so much as I was helping her to feel safe and loved since she was a rescue from a very bad past. Loving a new dog after losing one does not mean you need a whole new heart to love a new dog. You just open a new folder and keep it in file cabinet/heart. Everyone and everything that we love gets their own folder. Sorry for such long comment my dear. Thank you for everything you teach us including how to love and care for animals.

    I lost my best friend of thirteen years. Exactly one month to the day I adopted a new dog. Wow you want to talk about guilt. I'm able to function as a normal person. But my heart breaks every time I think of him. He was a loss that will affect me forever. And now with ella. I find myself feeling guilt. I think I adopted too soon. Ella is here to stay. It's just that I catch myself sometimes. Hard to put in words. But thank you for this video. It's always good when someone understands.

      @gidget8717 2 місяці тому +4

      You shouldn't feel guilty. You aren't replacing your best friend, you are expanding your love to take in another best friend. Think about it like this, I loved my parents equally, loved my grandparents equally, love my siblings equally and I have loved every pet I've ever owned (or who have owned me ) equally. You are capable of great love, giving love to another doesn't diminish the love you have for one that is no longer with you. ❤

      When my 15 yr old Ella (a German Short-haired Pointer) passed I kept seeing her out of the corner of my eye following me about like she had always done. I adopted a new pup from the shelter & Ella seemed to pass over then. I felt she felt I needed a companion/ protector & once I had one in flesh, then she could pass over that bridge & rest.
      Don't feel guilty about loving or enjoying your new pet. Animals are so just & fair. I'm sure your previous pet appreciates that you have some one to keep you company & love you since the deceased pet can't do that in the flesh anymore.

So it won't be long until we'll be doing that again. Pippi we loved you and have missed you for a while since you stopped coming on here less and less. My precious boy had a seizure of many last night. I know his time is near and it is killing me. I love him so much. I've lost many, many pets and all hurt so bad. My current boy was my husbands service and looked out for him in many situations, even the doctors and nurses were impressed with him. Just writing this thinking about losing him has me crying like a baby. I've missed the boy he was, the seizures have taken his sight his hearing, and now it's working on his mobility. But he still loves to eat and drink, no accidents even in a seizure he still seems to have the awareness to struggle to go in the proper place. Today it's as if the seizure never happened thank God. But I know it will take his life maybe in the next one or the next one but it will come and I am not prepared to lose him. When my husband died I was flabbergasted how cruel people can be, "you better go find another husband", "stop crying over him, he's gone and never coming back", "can I have his things", it just went on and on until I withdrew and have now lived a recluse life with my boy. When he passes I won't share it with anyone because I do not want to hear them saying, "go get another one", "stop crying he's gone etc." , it's so painful. We had no children so all of our dogs were like our children and none were ever replaceable. Just like my husband, he was awesome and not replaceable. My dad passed six months after my husband, he was the very last of my family except for my boy, now he'll soon leave me. The grief and mourning for him has already begun. The worry and fear is great. My heart goes out to all who are also mourning.

    My condolences to all who have lost their little friends. I lost my dear feline Marley 5 months ago, and it still hurts. Her vets abandoned us almost two years before her passing. We were on our own and I kept her going with natural therapies during that time. In the last month I followed an unnecessary recommendation from a fear mongering vet which ended up harming her and that has caused me tremendous regret. I've written Marley's eulogy and a feline resources web page in her honor. I am also writing her medical history and life story for a future blog post.

    I lost one of my senior boy cats two weeks ago, today. He was a lovely light orange tabby..I called his color blond.
    He was a rescue from a no kill shelter in 07 who had been returned, twice. It was a military base shelter and when folks get stationed overseas, they can't always bring their pets.
    I wrote a quick email to that shelter thanking them for the 17 years I shared with him. I don't know if they got it.
    I won't be getting another pet unless decent pet food comes back down to pre plandemic prices.

    Such an important topic -- the loss of a pet. Most of us who follow the channel have gone through the loss of a pet. Our grief is our own -- none of us has the exact grief because we are all individuals, as are our pets.
    May I mention that there are articles and books online from Elizabeth Kubler-Ross about death & dying, and she identified the processes that people go through when a loved one passes. One of my undergrad courses was Death & Dying and we studied her valuable work.
    Learning a bit about the psychology of loss and grief helped me some as I worked through the loss of my Golden Retrievers, and my Collie. It also helped when we tragically lost our youngest son.
    It seems to me that we never fully 'get over' the loss of a loved one, be it animal or human...our lives are changed and all we can do is learn to cope with the loss(es).
    Be well, Dr. Jones. You have a wonderfully tender heart and you are so kind to help all of us with our concerns for our animals.

      The dog left behind does grieve, and does help you deal with loss. When my girl passed, I was so grief-stricken. One day, I caught a glimpse of my other dog sitting by the window, shaking. That's when I realized life had to go on, and we needed a new type of normal. He's doing great now, but shows no real interest in other dogs.

Her 6 pups were adopted quickly, she was underweight and someone beat her, we are working through everything but I’m so lucky she picked me and loves me already. I am still mourning Jena I wish I could hold her again, I wish she could tell me she’s ok, sometimes I wish I could be with her in the void or heaven. My cats Eddie and Buddy saved my life. They came into my life after a very serious suicide attempt and me asking the planet 'why am I still here? I'm useless and life is so tough' ... then these two 2 week old abandoned stray kittens came into my life. I knew I was never going to be a parent to a human, but being a mama to these precious kittens was life-changing. For 13 years, I felt so strongly connected to them, I'd always say when your hearts stop, mine will stop as well. But the night Eddie died ... it was life he was still around and was telling me 'remember there are many stray kittens and cats who need you'. Two weeks later Buddy died - same emotions again. Love. I focused more on rescuing stray cats and the love I feel for all of them has only grown. I still talk to Eddie and Buddy every day, they are still in my life every single second of my life. So will all my other animal friends. They are true love. And true love lasts forever. ❤

    I lost my two boys, Jack and Jr. two years ago. They passed 3 months apart from each other. I cry for them every day. I miss them so much ♥️ They were my babies.

    So I DO understand so very well how you feel and the family of Pippi.
    I am crying for you and for them because I know so well what everyone is going through.

    We just lost our Aussie, Baby Boy, to hemangiocarcinoma. He was running and playing with us up until the day it ruptured and he went so quickly. We had no idea because he never showed any symptoms of illness and the tumor was burrowed behind the spleen and undetectable without a sono. He was so full of life. 2/10/24 he went to doggy heaven. We have rescued and loved so many dogs in this life and it never gets easier. Rest in Peace Pippi. ❤

    Condolences to Pippi’s family and friends. I loved watching her on camera and appreciate that her family allowed the doctor to film her for the videos that help us all so much. I will miss seeing her.
    I would love for the doc to talk about what to do logistically when a pet dies and how to prepare for a variety of situations - like planning for illness, sudden death, etc and how to put a dog down, burial vs. cremation and finding a reputable place to do it, how the vet is involved, etc. My service dog is the first dog I’ve ever had, and I hope he will live many more years. However, I would like to know what happens if he were to pass away in my home - like there’s no doggy coroner to call, is there? Or is there a way to plan for a dog’s death? And how do you know if you’re getting a good place to bury or cremate them (there were issues with pet cemeteries in NYC area mixing up dogs, putting them in mass graves, cremating multiple dogs at once, etc.)? I have SO many questions and no answers . . . and it’s always best to have an idea of what one wants to do when their pet passes away in advance, so it doesn’t become an emotional, rushed decision that might come with regrets later on. Can you do a deep dive on this subject? I know it’s not a fun topic, but it’s very important to know what to do and what the options are whether you know that time might be coming vs if it happens suddenly.
    Thanks doc!

    I’m so sorry for your loss. I know this will not take away the pain, but please know that your love for your animal family brought you here. They are not here physically but their legacy can be seen and felt by you and by others - you loved them so much that you were motivated in part by them to start educating others about their pets’ health. They were a part of your videos, your journey as a vet, as a person, as an educator. Every moment this video is glanced at, watched, commented upon - good or bad - it’s impact from the legacy of those you love. I hope the memories you shared stay as vividly with you until you meet again. God bless you.
