Just a few additional tips from someone who has had 2 fatty liver cats before:
    1. PREVENT it! - The best way to never deal with this challenging disorder is to prevent it. Know what and how much your cat's are eating. If they aren't eating at least a minimum of one can of food per day and this happens 2 or more days take your cat to the vet. Cats can get fatty liver with just 2 days of not eating enough. NEVER think that if you buy a new food your cat will just get used to it and you can leave the food down and MAKE them eat the new food - it doesn't work that way. The cat is the boss and if they don't like the food they won't eat and will get fatty liver. If introducing a NEW FOOD, put down the new food AND the old food for a week or two and make sure your cat is eating the new food. I did this once and changed my cat's food rapidly and she wouldn't eat it (I didn't know she wasn't eating it because we have multiple cats) and she got fatty liver.
    2. If you catch FL early enough it will be CHEAPER. If not it is going to cost you $2,000 - $3,000 for your cat to be at the vet for a week on an IV and getting tube fed (that is what it cost me for my cat to stay at the vet). And, it doesn't end there...there will be weeks of meds and home feedings to come.
    3. E-Tubes and G-Tubes are AWESOME - I have used both. I highly recommend them as it is less stressful for the cat and really easy to use. If you force feed a cat, first it is VERY difficult and second cats can develop diversions to cat food after being force fed. Plus, keep in mind you will be tube feeding your cats for a minimum of 2 weeks but it could go as long as 2 or 3 MONTHS and that would be very difficult by trying to force feed them. Get a tube, you won't regret it.
    4. I have used Denamarin tablets, as well as B12 injections and a host of other supplements to help them heal and they woked great.
    5. The nice thing about using an E-tube or a G-tube is that you can gring/crush up their medications and mix them with water and give it to them through the tube - super easy. Get a tube, lol!
    6. You can give them WATER through the E-Tube or G-Tube in leu of SubQfluids. Cheaper and EASY!
    7. If you have to give SubQ Fluids It is much easier to give SubQ Fluids by transfering 60ml at a time from the bag into a 60ml syringe and then using an infusion set to give the fluids under your cat's skin - needle is MUCH smaller than the one shown in this video. Your vet office can show you how to do it.
    8. Be patient and DON'T GIVE UP! It can be heartbreaking and frustrating if your cat doesn't heal/progress as fast as you would like. But, give it time. Your patentience and loving care will be rewarded with a healthy and happy cat.
    9. The good news is that FL rarely happens to the same cat twice. Yea!
Good luck to anyone dealing with this and take care! XOXO

I am so glad you have this channel on UA-cam! You are living proof of the fact that my choice to pursue Naturopathic Veterinary Medicine is not just my weird autistic brain that sees how much the Veterinary community needs more Naturopathic and herbalists working in a CAVM, complementary alternative veterinary medicine. The complementary means working alongside the primary care veterinarian to ensure that all choices are considered and tried from safest for the patient to start with and then only adding more if the previous treatment wasn't working within a prescribed observation period. I can't thank you enough for the work you continue to do in the community

Very informative. I lost a wonder Aby 25 years ago to this disease and at that time the vet had little idea how to treat it. He went from a vigorous healthy cat to skinny and jaundiced overnight and as a newby to cat health at that time I was helpless. I pray never again.

It was a very hard decision, but she was not responding to treatment and wouldn't get up to go to the restroom. She would just go where she layed. She didn't want to eat and forcing it down her throat was too stressful to her. We had her cremated for our 14 yo son. He asked if we could so he could keep her close in a way. Thank you for this extremely important and informative video Dr. Andrew. I've been waiting for this one to keep in my library jic.
Just wanted to add... One of my boys needed dental surgery last week to have some of his bottom incisors removed, not related to our daily dental brushing routine. Something he was born with. The rest of his teeth were in great shape. He's nearly 7 years old. This was his first cleaning. Only one spot had a tiny bit of tartar but I'd never of been able to have seen it with his brachecephalic mouth. Only under anaesthesia could this be seen. Other than that dr said hardly anything on the gumline.. no hard calculus...
I used an arnica SOLUTION with tablets diluted in spring water and gave drops by a VERY small syringe before and after the surgery to HELP with BRUISING in the mouth. It has to done right before and immediately after the surgery to be effective. Not difficult at all!It worked very well! Hardly even a slight bruise at all.
    Arnica works!!! Thank you!😁Have a great weekend!😊

When the blood work came back with very elevated liver enzymes and no clear answer from the vet I decided to research it on my own and came across Dr. Jones video. I know not everyone is able or willing to do this but I have some med experience so was glad that the vet I had at the time was willing to send me home with the right equipment. Not all are....in fact, less and less are open to anything simple or DIY for animal healing. I'm finding this so frustrating... Yes! And thanks for your videos. You are very much like the vet I had in Nehalem, Oregon... A great guy who charged reasonable prices and who was willing to sit there and suss out options with me. I was able to gain a lot more confidence in my abilities to diagnose and treat my cats/dog with herbs and diet after a few years of time spent chatting with him.
BTW, our human medical system is deteriorating too... So much that we feel it's generally not advisable to go to the doc or hospital unless we have to (sucking chest wound?) I put my own shoulder back in after I dislocated it just as I was able to lance an abscess and treat it on a cat. Fortunately medical and vet care is better and way less $$ in central Mexico...where we all plan to move.
Unfortunately, moving the dog/cats there means we have to get all 3 rabies shots for immigration. Which sucks.

We kept her going as long as we could even doing IV cutaneous fluids and careful feeding (raw foods, etc.) Her sister cat was fine but we had to take her to the local shelter so she could be adopted b/c she was intensely bullying her sick sister and we live in a very small space. The healthy cat was among (they said) the most well, trained, healthy, flee free (naturally!) cats they had ever taken in and she found a home really fast with an older couple. My cat Elvis is 20 lb and a diabetic he was diagnosed November 1st of 2018. He is currently being treated with insulin but my own thing that I'm doing with him is giving him a multivitamin supplement. Sometimes I have trouble with him trying to eat but I do get the food in him by keeping after him and saying to him, good boy Elvis chicken dinner, good boy. I'm disabled and I'm able to stay home with him all of the time. He eats a low-carb high-protein canned cat food. This was alarming to me and I am keeping a close eye on him. So, I was wondering even if a cat is eating properly, will they still get fatty liver disease just because they are overweight or is it just the fact that they don't eat well enough or like I said is it just the excess weight itself that can give them fatty liver disease?? Elvis is overweight considerably but I am giving him an extra multivitamin supplement, and I am making sure that he is getting the proper amount of food.

🙏💜 Thank you for the information! I've used chicken baby food (plain with no other ingredients) for cats nd kittens with inappetence. Can try different temperatures too (cold, room temperature or warmed). Even adding extra water. Found that many prefer eating from a metal spoon too. Trying to force feed them can be difficult and may result in food aversion. So, trying to offer small frequent feedings. If accepted by the cat or kitten and stays down (no vomiting and/or diarrhea...GREAT! If not, more aggressive assistance is needed! Feeding tubes sound scary, but their life depends on getting nutrients and fluids! Also, with kittens and smaller cats, a butterfly/winged needle may be easier for subQ fluids. Even when they feel like absolute crap, they can get a sudden burst of energy to jolt and wiggle dislodging the needle. Prayers!! 🙏💜

I've been force feeding my cat with hepatic lipidosis for 2 weeks but she's not any less yellow and she got much worse after leaving the ER (I imagine from the stress). I have been getting about 200 calories in her over a 24 hour period but I am mainly using Gerber Baby Food (Ham). It is 55% protein and she tolerates it well. Other calories come from temptation treats that she will eat on her own, some nutri-cal, and if she does eat on her own it is roasted duck that I pureed for her. I could not afford the feeding tube or FNA. But the ultrasound showed inflamed gallbladder and bile ducts. In general, I do think her body language is better and she has gained weight; before she looked like she was in constant pain and three times I rescheduled hospice to put her down as I could not bear to see her suffer. However, she rarely will eat anything on her own and I wonder if that is because she also has stomatitis. She also has IBD & CKD, so this process has been grueling and difficult. How long am I supposed to be doing this for before the yellow fades and she regains an appetite??

Also, when searching for CBD oils, there are different percentages (I'm guessing it is in relation to how potent the effects are), e.g. 5%, 10%, 15% up to 40%. What percentage would you recommend for cats and which dosage per pound / kilogram?

One of my cats has this now along with Anemia. She lays around nearly all day and when she does get up she does not make it far; very thin. Went to the vet for two nights getting fluids until her blood become like water and he took her off and she’s been brought home. We are now blending canned food recommended by the vet and forcing it down multiple times a day. Multiple pills/steroids to increase appetite and an iron liquid supplement with vitamins in it for the anemia. She has used the cat litter a few times but also wet herself once. It’s only been a couple nights but the future is uncertain and it is scary. And it hurts that I allowed this to get so bad taking for granted she would start eating again after failing to swap to canned food. She is paying for my negligence and ignorance. I just hope it is not too late to bring her back to normal so I can take care of her as she deserves.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with us. My cat was diagnosed with fatty liver disease tonight and I've never been more scared or sad in my life. I couldn't afford to keep him in emergency so I'm trying this at home. I think he will be less stressed here but I am very concerned. I start a new job two days from now so I won't be around as often. Secondly, because of the new job I have to move (only 30 minutes away) but I have a feeling the first move and surgery not long ago stressed him out a great deal. I don't want this to happen again. He loves my dad (who we live with now) but I'm afraid both of us would be heartbroken without each other. I wonder if I should keep him here instead...I have feliway now, catnip and cbd oil-could that prevent this from happening again, if I move him in a couple weeks. Any advice or personal experiences welcome.

Hi Michelle, may I ask how is he doing at the moment? Has he recovered appetite? We have a 12 years old Siamese cat (Marroni) who we believe may be developing a fatty liver disorder (its been now 4 days without eating at all). Its been now 2 days since we decided to force feeding him with a syringe and a puree meal (from Applaws). The problem is this is insufficient in terms of daily nutrition. We will bring him for the 3rd time to the vet tomorrow and this time we will be seriously considering asking for a feeding tube as I've read its probably the best way to treat this condition while avoiding possible aversion to either dry or wet food later.

    • @Stargirl_-wz8ub
      @Stargirl_-wz8ub 4 роки тому +3

@@marcosdtc Hi Marcos, of course! I'm sorry for the delay and the news of your kitty's illness. Mine is doing incredibly well! He had a feeding tube placed in. He's had that for maybe a month now and his jaundice is completely gone. He hasn't lost anymore weight but I'm still trying to get him to gain some. He does eat on his own now without an appetite stimulant and without me putting food in the tube but it's not as much as he should-though that's increasing daily it seems. I stopped giving him cbd oil after the second dose because I read a study on mice had caused liver damage! I'm giving him Applaws too and he LOVES that. He also liked Nulo Salmon and Mackerel flavor canned food. I should add, for tube feeding I started him out on Hills A/D mixed with water and blended, but it kept getting clogged even though I flushed with water before and after. I'm now giving him Royal Canin Renal Support liquid diet in his tube and haven't had problems since. Getting a reusable bandage you can change daily from Kitty Kollar is really helpful and important (at least changing the bandage frequently and allowing the wound to breathe). Not all vets know about the kitty kollar and it can save you time and money. May I ask how your cat is doing? I hope well.

      I don't believe cbd.oil gives mice liver damage .
A lot of times these studies are conducted by the very Industries and companies to have everything to lose by these natural products being used instead of their big Pharma garbage.
They probably found the cheapest worst c b d oil that was not organic and probably had lots of pesticides in it they probably gave those poor little moist millions of doses because that's how they can prove something is not good and that is what they have done with a powerful brain healer that has been used in India for centuries if not thousands of years and yet none of my local Indian Grocers are allowed to carry it here in Texas and yet people can order it online ... go figure .
But they did tests and said it caused cancer but you see they will give ridiculously high doses that nobody in their lifetime would ever have accumulated so you could die from water or good ice cream also at that rate

My 13 year old Maine Coon had high GGT levels in her recent blood test. The vet recommended an ultrasound, that i was reluctant to have, as i hate putting my cat through the trauma of being driven to the vet. And the thought of having to shave her saddens me. However, my vet will not prescribe anything until she has an ultrasound. My cat had irregular liver readings last year and was losing weight. She dropped from 5.6kg to 3.9kg. However, we changed her diet (which has always been wet food), to better quality foods with more natural ingredients. Her weight is more stable now at 4.6kg. She is eating fine, and her pooh looks well formed (not runny), though her urine was too diluted in her last urine sample test. She does drink alot of water from her water bowl and the kitchen tap. My sister asked the vet if he would prescribe some ursodiol before having to go down the ultrasound route, but he refused to prescribe anything without doing an ultrasound first. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated as my cat, Foo Foo, means the world to my sister and I. Thanks

We've been caring for our cat for 5 days, she might have fatty liver, cancer or a liver shunt. shes had blood tests and an ultrasound, we're debating a feeding tube. The ultrasound ruled out anything to do with gallbladder. But her yellowing is still very prominent. How long until you seen SOME kind of improvement? How long until you noticed the yellowing returning to normal? How long until you saw more energy? I know it can take up to 3 months for their appetite to come back.. but when did you know you were *helping* vs making him suffer and prolonging some cats inevitable? Well, I brought her home after a week. She felt stiff and could not walk. I thought she was going to die. I had no other choice but to bring her home. I've been feeding her raw salmon, garden less, brcolli and rice. She didn't have a bowel movement for 3 days. Before she went to the Vet, she wouldn't eat. Now, she eats like a horse. She has been having bouts of nausea and throwing up. Is it ok to give her milk thistle? Also, if f anyone could help with her medical bills go to gofundme Emergency Vet Bills for My Cat (Molly). Hi Dr. Jones, please forgive me for this interruption, I need help with ordering your vitamin addition to homemade dog food and didn’t know how to contact you except to break in here. I would like to order, but I lost the page I was on when I wanted to order. I’m using an iPad so I’m sure it is the reason why this happened. Could you please direct me to the information about the vitamin and how to order. I have been cooking for my dog Aslan, he is about 11 or 12 years old.The rescue didn’t know his exact age. His life before we adopted him is very sad. He was used as a bait dog, he is scared all over his body especially his head, back and legs. He has had heart worm and valley fever before we adopted him. Over the last few months he has been eating dirt from our yard. I don’t know what triggered this, so I thought it could be because he isn’t getting enough vitamins and minerals. Then today he vomited outside in the yard, I didn’t see him vomit, I had just opened the door when I saw him with what looked like at first like a dead small animal. As I got close up I saw an almost solid concoction of the food I gave him earlier of chicken, rice, with mucus and black dirt, or something that looked like it, but upon closer inspection looked like coffee grounds. I picked up the whole thing and took it apart. I’m going to take the black stuff to our Vet to see what it could be. I am afraid that the contents of his stomach may indicate something serious. Aslan has never had his own forever family before. According to the rescue we got him from, no one would adopt him. He was a street dog for a long time. Then was picked up by those who fight dogs. It was never quite clear how he became a street dog again and picked up by “Helping Orphaned Hounds” here in Arizona. They are the people we adopted him from. I tried to contact them last year when Aslan needed to have surgery, he tore the ACL ligaments in his knee. I found out that HOH closed. When he was recuperating from his knee surgery, he developed a problem with bleeding in the intestines. I believe that came about from a medication he was given after he had a mole removed from on the top of his muzzle area just behind his nose that was diagnosed as a melanoma. Since this type of cancer can metastasize, and the margins were clean, but not as large as it could have been due to the place the mole was taken from, he was given a medication to help prevent metastasis. I am afraid that Aslan might have some sort of problem. We love him very much, he has been through so much in his life. I began cooking for him to help him get better, but as I mentioned, he has been eating dirt from the yard! I don’t know if he could have a recurrence of the bleeding, perhaps an ulcer. I did not return to the medication that had originally given him the internal bleeding of the past.
Thank you for any help you could give me in returning to the page that would be for purchasing vitamins. If you think that there might be anything else to add to Aslan’s diet, I would be very grateful for any suggestions. Sincerely, Mrs. Patricia C. Rohan

My 13 year old Siamese mix Jasmine has this. She lost weight and wasn’t eating well. Ultrasound confirmed this diagnosis. She was given 3 weeks of antibiotics and daily prednisolone.
Her liver bloodwork is much better now a month later. Not sure if we’ll put her through another ultrasound under anesthesia. She’s eating and not vomiting like before.
She’s lethargic and has put on too much weight which concerns me. Guessing it’s from the pred. 😕
I give fluids twice weekly to Jasmine. The vet never told me it would be better daily. I’m really good at giving sub Q fluids because we had to do that all the time over the last 12 years for our 21 year old cat who had kidney damage from the pet food recall. I wish I had the resources to do this to my kitty 😢 I don’t have time really and my kitty seems to rather die than eat a thing 😭

Murray is so cute and chill. Thank God our cats are not overweight.

But cats really hate forced feeding compared to dogs. I should know since I have both cats and dogs and that is why it is easier for me to give meds to my dogs compared to cats. Our cats also tend to sniff their food and once they can smell the meds, they will walk away and rather starve themselves to death.

      @@lorrainewheeler5592 believe me , i know what it's like .
We even had one cat decades ago that look like it was growing a horn and it's lower forehead in between the eyes and it turned out to be can't think of what it's called now but some kind of a sinus tumor .
The cat wasn't eating and he described how much worse that cat would get and what a horrible death it would have and it was terrible putting her down because everybody said she was one of the most beautiful cats they'd ever seen .
Also back on July 2nd 1993 my beautiful fawn pug dog died in my arms ; one of the worst days of my life ... took about seven years to get over that .

Dr. JONES WHAT CAUSES MY DOG TO GET FAT SIST ON HE’S SIDE...took him to my vet. And she took a SAMPLE and said not to worry it’s a fat cell but gave me no reason for it???? WAS SO RELIEVED THAT IT WAS NOT CANCER DIDN’T ASK MORE QUESTIONS!!!???

    • @conniekoo
      @conniekoo 5 років тому

Joan Mencl that might be a lipoma. It’s a benign growth of fat cells. Check out Dr Jones’s older videos. I believe he already made a video on that and it might help you.

Hi doc! My cat has gone through a blood test yesterday. And when her results came in, her liver enzymes is at 207.9 😞😞😞 she had a high fever before the test. She’s not exhibiting yellowing and vomiting tho. Should i be worried for her liver?

I think Solution being forced does not seem correct. Only way to lose liver fat is fasting which cat was doing correct. Longer the fast cat will go in Keto and lose liver fat so should have not stopped cat fasting by force feeding. After 1-3 weeks of fast Cats insulin management would have been corrected. After this cat should have been given Fat/Protein( 70%/30%) as One meal a day to get insulin in order and lose fat.
