At first: "Here's a tutorial for people that think tutorials go too quickly"
Moments later: "Press E Left Alt Shift GZ to move V to separate and Left Alt Z to combine these vertices and go into layout to transfer these to the Y axis as you set the local to the outside frame. If you missed any of that, too late, I'm already moving onto the next step."
Yeah, I've seen better tutroials, and they do it with a single mesh.
@@Kindlesmith70 who do you recommend? i def need better quality than this
@@P4TCH5S I could recommend Imphenzia. His channel has a lot of stuff. He has a few videos concerning 3d modelling, along with rigging. He's just one person of many out there, and is about the only person off the top of my head. I generally bookmark a lot of videos for various tutorials. The above isn't terrible, but if I am not wrong, will run into problems with extra faces and such that might hurt rendering if you have a lot of this kind of work. I'm not a genius to this. I am very new to all this myself. I was taught in other places, the fewer extra (unneeded) stuff you have, the better.
Also to say, this definitely is basics, not an all ecompassing tutorial of every aspect one might need to know based on what you will be using this model for. I don't beleive Imphenzia goes into that detail on his YT channel either, but then I've not looked at every single one of his many videos.
I've not been lucky to find an all inclusive video package that explains everything unless it's directly tied to making demo/practice games which, if not require payment, largely are incomplete.
@@Kindlesmith70 thank you
yeah, with the intro I was like, oh cool, this should be do-able. Skip to me pausing every 2 seconds cause he doesn't SAY what he's pressing but only what he's doing and I have to look at the screen or think for a second, which buttons to press. Yes this might be a beginners tutorial (I wouldn't know the difference at this point) but man this ain't slow
You are clearly very talented and experienced with Blender. This might cause you to overlook the things that a beginner might not understand.
Since this is a video targeted at beginners, I would like to mention to the frustrated individuals that cannot follow along with your key presses:
1. Space to search is not on by default in a new Blender 4.0 installation, go the Edit > Preferences > Keymap > Change "Spacebar Action" to Search
2. Tab does not bring radial mode menu by default. Under the 3D view options (also found in Edit > Preferences > Keymap) select the "Tab for Pie Menu" checkbox
Yeah, i am coming from another class and have no idea what certain things are that he is saying.
This is a common annoyance in many tutorials where the UI or settings are customized and the UA-camr doesn't realize this. They just press things and do things without explaining what they're doing. @shpleegames thank you for pointing out these settings
Дякую за пояснення!)
hero
Yeah and the workspace or what ever the views or panels/windows are called are not set up at all...
I just installed it 1 minute ago and only have one big screen, not three.
I guess I've got the scene, cause I see what looks like a camera and in a corner I see the axis, but no idea how to do the rest and it makes me wanna throw my laptop =')
As a blender hobbyist for 5 years this tutorial isn't just for beginners! I saw so many tips that I can use, very efficient process well done!

Nice tutorial, but oh my god its so fast, I cant believe this is real-time. I keep having to go back a redo things because you talk so fast and move from one step to another without any room to breathe. I have to constantly look up how to do certain things that are just not explained in here. I've been on this for over an hour and I'm only five minutes into the actual video. If this was beginner friendly I wouldn't have a headache right now.
I agree, for beginner the video have flaws and I understand we blender veterans don't usually remember our beginners days and it's learning to teach as well. Your comment was on point and constructive and I commented in similar manner as well that his way isn't beginner as claimed by the title and mentioned. In short this is not a beginner level but somewhat like stage 2 level if there are 10 stages
Plus I strongly disagree the use of shortcuts for beginner tutorials. But more precise to context approach is appreciable. Anyways critics always help creators to improve so I am happy you did
Have a Fantastic day :)
@ahmedmalik2856 you have a fantastic day as well :)
Stop complaining because it's not perfect for you. You did not pay for this it's free. It says beginner, not completely new to blender. Don't fault him for your lack of ability
@Justlivin00 My dear mate, I am not complaining. You should read my msg again or maybe use chatgpt to explain it to you. Also google what beginner meaning is. Critics only help creators improve maybe you lack this ability to understand. Plus my points came from 11 students of mine so you can go somewhere else with your nonsense.

I've been working on mine off and on for over a week. I agree, he does go pretty fast. While it's a simple character, I wouldn't necessarily title it as 'beginner' unless he was providing shortcuts before he does his actions. He does say like, "Ctrl + R" for bevel, but not for everything. I'd say be prepared to spend about 30 minutes on every 5 minutes of video LOL
I'm watching this at -2x speed. And also with a lot of pauses. I NEED THAT FLUFFY CAT! *Relaxing sigh*
I really enjoyed going through your shark tutorial the other week. But it did go through things quite quick so having a slower tutorial is super helpful!
I've made many characters even professionally in blender and this video is still wonderful! Thank you for the video SouthernShotty.
Thank you for taking the time to make this tutorial!
Yay I'm so excited!
This cat loos soo cute and brave! Thanks! You are the best!
Great Turorial! I will definitely try this.
Thank you
a lot of good and helpful information, but if its a beginner tutorial, why are you trying to speedrun it. SLOW DOWN PLLLLEEEEEEAAASSEE!
Jeez!!! What an amazing video!!! THANK YOU for sharing your knowledge.
Great work, followed along with the modelling pretty well, only wished the texturing was its own dedicated vid, if not a longer section in this vid, because that highlights reel of the texturing and materials felt like "draw a circle then draw the rest of the owl"
It looks soooo cute!
I followed this tutorial. Was fun and most challenging was the texture paint and trying to get the materials imported. I also made some changes on the fly, giving it my own touch and modeling some extra things.
How did you import the materials?
Now that is amazing, thanks and keep up the great work man!
This was a solid modelling introduction, I subbed like 2-3 mins in.
The unwrap was perfect for these purposes, quick, simple, done.
Then the last 3 minutes were straight to time-lapse speed, beginner lost...
You even reposed to model, it's not complex, but again, beginner lost...
It would have been better to demonstrate the block out for a few areas, showing how to hide and show areas to better paint or basic masking.
At least that way as a beginner the model could be coloured basically.
Then the window of materials just comes from nowhere, a link to your 'Blender 3D Materials Explained - Beginner to PRO' would probably help, but I think a quick and dirty video to setup and get up and running with your free pack would stop people bouncing off to end of this tutorial.
To do this tutorial the viewer only needs to apply existing materials, there is a LOT of (good) information in 'Blender 3D Materials Explained - Beginner to PRO' but for someone that wants to follow this tutorial it's tmi...
This is a great modelling tutorial! (with a 3 minute demo of texture painting and prefabbed materials at the end)
This is a fast and great exorcize, not to mention an adorable character. Great practice.
Nope i saw your short with this character about lighting then stumble across this awesome.
It's a fantastic tutorial I love it but I have few concerns regarding Beginner Title and Mention
I hate to break it to you but this is not a beginner tutorial, I am not talking biased, got feedback from "Real" Beginners (8 ppl) and they struggled a lot (specially in sculpting) instead of sculpting, why not keep it simple with edit mode proportional editing?
More stuff but I believe just keep it minimal simplistic as possible, for me, that tutorial was super simple but just sharing primary research data just to let you know so you can improve videos more ^^
Anyways, nice tutorial. But yeah, you nailed it with how fastly to make really cool stuff haha keep it up!
I've finished two very simple character models tutorials and unfortunately this is still a bit too fast and advanced for me so I'm glad its not just me being a slow learner. I'm going to do a couple more simple options and will 100% come back to this one though!
i clicked this as a super beginner (only done the donut tut) and even tho I understand what he's saying for the most part, he's moving lightning fast on the inputs and it def isn't beginner friendly at least upfront. a beginner would spend hours just trying to pause, decipher, and keep up w what he's doing. though I figured as much when I saw the vid was only 28mins 😅
@xyndigo Yup, once you get bit comfortable with basic blender keys, shortcuts and stuff. Come back and follow it, it's very good tutorial for Intermediate Level :)
For now, you can check casraven3d channel tutorials, he is making beginner friendly tutorials as far as I saw. I hope it might help you learn blender ^^
This tutorial is pure gold. Thanks a lot! Ciao from Italy and long life to Blender :) :)
So 🔥 love your style.
I really appreciate this. I typically run tutorials at .75 to .25 to follow along. This is just nice.
That's genius
Thank you! this tutorial really helped me.
Loved the video!!! Thank you
it looks so cute! i want to try blender.
this is a really great tutorial , please make more of these
Finally! Thanks
Whoaaa, finally, thanks a lot
You're welcome!
loved it
great tutorial!!!
Very good.Thx a lot.!
Perfect.
Great.
Very disappointed that you didn't explain the texturing process more, cuz the texturing was what really caught my eye from the thumbnail. Even so, thanks for doing this
2:52 shift+alt+left click to the line to select it, then v to separate them and L to select the right part (I’ve been 10 minutes replaying this to understand it, so fast XD)
Love these tutorials, Always struggle on rigging and animating them, Any advice or will you make one for this character?
This is kind of art style Ive been going for and texture :)
You said we'll go slow and yet you're so fast! I even thought that I have 1.5 turned on. It's difficult for a complete beginner to follow along( But thank you for the tutorial, I did my best to follow it!
thanks for the lesson
That was good, thank you)))
1:25 if you guys can't use the grab tool, but all the other sculpting tools work, go to texture (where the radius and strength bars are) and delete the texture that you have. the delete has an x icon
16:45 The mirror fodder fire
I was able to solve this problem. Right-click on the cube, select "Set origin" and then "Geometry to origin". I hope I could help
Very nice vid!
Super cool❤❤❤ Can you please make a similar tutorial on the rig and animation of such a character?
I love this look! Thank you for sharing this process.
No problem 😊
emm that great i like it
I subbed as soon as you said 'are you fed up of fast tutorials' YOU GET IT !
and then he made a fast janky tutorial
I noticed part of why your model looks more professional than mine is neatness: it's important to not go crazy shifting things around too much in sculpt mode and relying on the "grab" tool too much because my mesh ended up with a lot of lumpyness. This affected the belt since it was copied from a lumpy and asymmetrical torso and make the buckle noticeably uneven as well.
>"have you watched a tutorial to create a character like this and it just moves way too fast? Well, in this tutorial we're going slow"
>proceeds to go way too godddmn fast
Very good tut, I just finished me little cat. I'm not a full beginner and have a wee bit of experience, so through some other help i added little planes with some transparent textures to make whiskers. It has somehow made it look more mouse-like, but that's okay, as now it's time to learn to convert it to armature and learn how to rig with it... *cracks knuckles*.
I will say, a little bit more on the intermediate side than a full-blown beginner tutorial. But still good, as sometimes it's good to keep beginners(cough, me) on their toes, if a tutorial is too easy they don't learn anything :P
Thanks
16:46 "the mirror forifier"😂😭
helped alot
This is too much, thank yoh🙏🙏🙏
You're really amazing, saw this by recommendations and I'm subscribed 🎉
thanks dude, starting without explaining how to put the image there is just perfect.
Shift + A -> Image -> Reference.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! will you also show how to rig the model in future videos?

I just wandered in off the street at the right time but it’s nice to be here :)
🤚
Let's gooo
As a COMPLETE beginner, I wish it was explained WHY we we're doing things sometimes because I got really confused. I still managed to do it but not without getting very frustrated in some parts.
Sure, here is the translation:
---
I'm no longer a beginner. However, I'm very interested in how others use the tools in Blender. I'm especially curious about the use of Sculpt Mode. So far, I've never really dared to try it because I thought it required a lot of time and in-depth understanding to grasp Sculpt Mode. And, by the way, I also expected long computation times from the computer. But the way SouthernShotty used the mode for corrections here was great. And for me, modeling is now faster. My thanks to SouthernShotty for taking the time to share his workflow and knowledge.
Your style of coloring, texturing and lighting is absolutely stunning and what we’re all drawn towards - however in practically every tutorial and course you’ve done, you *always* speed up this process. Even in this video! It’s a shame because that’s exactly what we all want to see and learn. There are enough basic modeling videos out there.
Finished the modelling section! Really enjoyed this tutorial, would you consider doing a follow up for the rigging/animating?
Edit: just doing the texturing now, mostly done but having difficulty impotring the stitch image into the texture mask, unsure as to how to get that in
I wouldn't call it very beginner friendly. It goes a bit too fast at times, which is ironic considering you talk about too fast tutorials at the beginning. Nonetheless I do like the final effect.
cute
bro went at the speed of light
This video doesn't use the default keyboard shortcuts - be prepared to google every default shortcut if you are a beginner.
It's a great modelling tutorial, specially for learning workflows but I was a little bit dissapointed that the end result looks nothing like the thumbnail, the eyes are obviously done with another software and the suggested zbrush stiches texture looks nothing to the one shown on the tutorial. Would be nice if you could continue this tutorial with a more "advanced" one covering this topics
Really easy to understand, Thankyou!
amazing video this was the first time I attempted to model a character
I wanted to say that I enjoyed the process but it was such a pain to get to the final result (modifiers misbehaving and me accidentally deleting my work :D.)
but I am happy I that I did it
Really nice video! The only part hard to follow for beginners was the last texturing part IMO. Also I hope there will also be an animation tutorial
as helpful as this tutorial is i wish there was something on youtube that had the whole model to rigging
at 2:19 u did ctrl + 3 but also u did ctrl + 2 after that
Great tutorial!
Awesome. Is that fabric material in the full crafty pack? I have the full version, just wondered if it’s already in there or if I need to update 🤔☺️🔥👍🔥
little man is getting a staff and a wizard hat
Great videos. Waiting for rigging part.
If you find it too fast, you can slower the video in the settings ⚠️
Watching the Donut tutorial beforehand is recommended since this is for beginners - intermediate users who can already move around the interface and remember some hotkeys
very cool thank you, love it, really great, only feedback would be that the last part seems very rushed, especially the texture mask stitching part
plss poast another video of how you rig it and put drivers to your character
i dont know why but when i am in the texturing phase , i can paint every part of the body but the head , its driving me crazy
Edit : i solved it by doing the following : go to edit mode > select all faces > alt+n > recalculate outside
to let u understand this , is because there is some faces that are flipped inside the whole mesh wich prevent you from paiting it from the outside
for some reason youtube lacks modelling tutorials for blender, besides the famouse tutorials like the donunt and the real begginners tutorials, we have so little actual good modelling ones, can u make more ?
Hi, good tuto ! I have two questions :
1) What is the process to export it to Unity ?
2) Is it okay to have multiple parts for game characters ? (I am thinking about animations, multiple meshes, draw calls...)
This was very helpful! Except at the end I followed the shader editor exactly but the rendered image does not show the painted texture I made, it's just the fabric cotton material in a silver color. I followed that section exactly so if anyone can help that would be very appreciated!
All the beginners here, focus on the workflow and methods used. And realize shortcut keys are a luxury once you've performed the actions enough. It will be difficult regardless. You can do it!
May you make a topology part where you join ears to head, head to body and arms to body too? Not just ctr+j, but actually connect ears topology to head topology. Please❤
Could you also make a video on Rigging and Walk/Run animation?
Finally, cat in blender!
This is a decent tutorial but it doesnt very explain very well since its like the creator trying to catch a bus, too fast for those trying to learn from it, this is not exactly beginner friendly, cause an example you should hv mention how to place the reference, cause i bet only 5% of beginner know how to do it, try place the commands you use on the video, etc, alot could have been done, but still a decent tutorial.
Can you show how you animated it?
I've noticed in gaming, these are the type of character models, people are drawn to, because there short, not human, round and cute.
I need to make shorter characters. As this looks perfect.
Thank you!
can u do a rigging tut with this character
As a beginner with about 5-10 hours, I had to give up on following this tutorial. I made it about halfway through after a solid 10 hours working on this. The screen layout with 3 windows is very confusing and complicated to follow what you are doing. You move through item sections, shortcut keys, and menus way too fast; even at 0.25 playback speed. I had to watch every section many times to get what you did, and I am still making errors I don't know how to fix. Lots of good techniques but I spent more energy following you than learning. I guess I need to find something simpler.
I'd recommend Blender Guru's donut tutorial before this one if you haven't already
Update: I stepped away from this for a week or so and then tried again and was able to get all the way through it. I learned a ton in this video but for someone with less than 20 hours with blender this was a steep learning curve.
I've been enjoying this tutorial, but I do find it funny that every new piece of the cat that we work on starts with: "alright time to add a cube and subdivide it".
i got lost at 1 minute like how did he add the mirror modifier so fast what
I really enjoyed the tutorial, but I did have to stop and go back or look things up several times. I'm not completely new to modeling and texturing but I've only ever used Maya so this was a bit tough to follow. I made it to 25:09 and I can't progress any further because the color pick tool is not available to me. I have no idea where to find it, the hot keys for it don't work for this step, and there were no helpful answers online. Please can someone tell me why my color picker is missing in the image texture node when I try to add a new color?
How do I get the side screens?
With the same perspective.
Will you make the rigging tutorial for these???
Why does my gridfill fill only horizontal? I don't understand.. I keep trying and it only works before sculpting but if I do it before sculpting the deformity is bigger. But I also don't understand how the ear is so "clean" After sculpting it into place, it keeps deforming the face (big flat one) after all
are u trying to say that when sculpting ear u also sculpt the face ?????
Motto of this lesson: "90% - easy enough, 10% - bloody hell")
