This was a very good test. I'm sure a little extra wind resistance would also effect the mileage range.just a.04 miles/kWh more and 280 mile range would've been achieved, which could've easily been obtained with a little tail wind.
Subscribed. Yes, please do your 70mph range test when it is real cold out (like 15F). This is around the temperatures I would use a truck to go skiing with.
Amazing imo it matches or even slightly beats the purpose built ground up ev rivian r1t in efficiency. Great job fomoco I say. Now go make hundreds of thousands of them and offer us small business owners a reg cab 6.5' rwd option for under 35k please. 😀

Great video...going to subscribe yo see what else you do with the F150 Lightning :) I live watching these range tests. The range test I want to see is how far will the f150 lightning go on a $20 fast charge vs $20 gas fill of a f150 ICE.
270.3 miles real range done mostly at 70mph versus 283 miles (EPA Highway)/324miles (EPA) .....truly impressive...i'll bet hypermiling this car would be fun

These early truck test are setting up the standard atm at what is expected in these early days of electric PU. Comparing them to car stats is all we have atm though. Enjoy your truck and I look forward to seeing more of it.
Great content. Looking forward for a test with a travel trailer. 2 things I’d like to see - first, energy use (kw per mile) and total range, second - a 400 mile trip including charging - basically, how long it takes it to charge in the real world as part of a towing test (should be similar to regular test but might be different due to strain on system right after towing).
You can expect range to be cut in half or more depending on the weight you're towing. An extended range battery will charge from 15% to 80% in around 41 minutes. Everyone that has done any research on the lightning should know this vehicle is not designed for long distance towing. Nor is it designed for long distance travelers who are in a hurry to get anywhere. This is a vehicle designed, for great towing and payload capabilities, if used in your local area and you plan on charging at home.
@@pstoneking3418 I'm well aware as I've towed small and large trailers with the Model X but am still curious how the F-150 does due to it's size, weight and battery. BTW, from my own experience and looking at towing reviews (for EV and gas trucks), towing at high speeds is much more effected by the size of the trailer (it's front and volume) than the weight. Travel trailers and hauling trailers have huge fronts that act like big parachutes (or sails) that cause crazy drag and thus increase energy use dramatically and reduce range significantly (on electric and gas). Still looking forward to seeing anyone doing a travel trailer with the F-150 on a 400-500 mile trip - including the charge time.
Good luck getting your Intelligent Backup equipment! From the forums it looks like you can't really get that hardware if you're just a regular Lightning reservation holder. At least not in 2022.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney I hope you get it because I'm looking forward to your review of the system. I have an Enphase solar array already and SunRun didn't respond to multiple requests about whether it would integrate, even when I told them I wanted them to add to my array at the same time. Same story from many others. I decided to wait on my Lightning since I'm really buying it to be a battery backup for the house (that drives).
Great video as always - you definitely look happy to be in this vehicle. Very interested to see how this does in the winter given no heat pump. That's really the only shortcoming of the truck. Also very much looking forward to info on using it with the Charge Station Pro, and the Intelligent Home Backup install and operation. Would like to see a comparison between pros/cons of using that, versus the ProPower OnBoard for as-needed home backup.
@@brad_wilson I agree that the % of power to propel the vehicle will be greater than heating - especially for this not so efficient vehicle (just by nature of a truck). But every mile counts, and in cold temperature, you'll want to conserve any battery power wherever possible to reduce range loss since it's capacity will already be diminished due to the cold, the aero at cold, etc.
Looking forward to the winter range test. You have heated seats? Heated steering? It would be good to do winter range with and without heated steering and heated seats.
I found with my 2023 Lariat extended range Lightning it needs to do about 2.2 efficiency to match the EPA range. That is about 65 miles per hour on the highway.
Congratulations, Tom! That's a beautiful truck. I know you've been anxious to get it. 2.1 is darned good for a truck going 70. That is plenty of range since it is a good idea to stop for a bit every 2 hours just to stay alert. Your Lightning can go over 3 and a half hours @70 w/o needing to charge. I look forward to your charging test and future Lightning videos.
Lots of issues starting to pop up online with the Ford Charge Station Pro and 80A charging. The EVSE keeps shutting down for overheating. To solve, people have had to set the charge rate lower. Curious to see if you have the same issue when you get to installing yours. Hopefully you will be able to use the full 80A to test with your home electrical.
It would be interesting to see a towing range test. A lot of folks buy trucks to haul stuff or to tow their boat or camper. Perhaps even a high elevation camper tow - can you make it to a campground in the mountains and back again without getting stranded since charging spots aren't as common as gas stations.
Congrats on finally getting your truck! Really good results. Please try to get your hands on a Standard Range to test. This is such an expensive vehicle and i'm trying to decide if the SR meets my needs.
Can you guys do a side by side 70mph range test between the F150 Lightening and Cybertruck? I'd like to see the same exact conditions, terrain, temp, etc. and see the efficiency numbers of each.
That's nice range. I'll be curious what the winter range is. It would be great if they could make them more efficient as 2.1 in the summer is bad for most EVs, but it makes sense for a pickup truck.
You went farther than I thought you would. Highway driving in an EV is one of the least efficient ways to drive an EV. Get that miles per KWH to 2.5 and you got 321 miles. I’ve seen these trucks in person and they are certainly impressive. And they can actually be cheaper than the gas models depending on how you equip them… Now if they will just make my Maverick Hybrid that I’ve been waiting over a year for…
Hybrids are kind of fun, too. I still have an 2009 Escape Hybrid, and the 2021 F150 Hybrid. Becomes kind of game to see how much you can get it to use the electric battery/motor. In a way, when my LIghtning comes, I will miss that... but not much! Then the game will be how much miles I can squeeze per charge with regen.
I think the biggest issue/factor people ignore is the wind resistance that occurs at higher speeds.. you drive that Lightning at 65mph and I’m sure you’ll get closer to your 2.5m/kw maybe even close to 3.. I got my Bolt battery replaced and drove from Las Vegas to Ventura and needed just two quick stops to charge .. Topography and climate then speed
Obviously the Miles / kWh got better later in the test. . . carrying fewer electrons as the battery was depleted!!!! On a more serious note, I do wonder how much juice Bluecruise uses & what the range would be if not using it??
I'd be curious how much range drops off at 75 MPH. Most of the interstates here in Florida are 70 MPH and I set my ICE F150 to 75 and with a 36 gallon take I've gotten over 700 miles out of it many times and average around 630-650 combined. Any chance you'd run a test at 75?
Eventually, yes. But I need to set that up because I don't have a trailer or camper to use yet. I think the next one will be with max payload because I can arrange that easier.
Great review. So the average driver will get between 230 to 250 miles of range as they will not drive to zero state of charge. So how are people having to pay again for that extended battery? Most are sticking with the smaller battery because of the costs. When to make videos for the charging station please let us know how much you paid for that charger and how much it costs to have it installed without the family/friend discount. It’s important for people to know the truth about the cost to own and operate this truck. You have the price of the truck, the price of the charging station, the price for installing the charging station, and the cost to use a public charging station after free charging runs out.
I don't think this would have bothered your test but have you noted the difference between the "Normal" and "Sport" mode? I test drove a pro and with 1-pedal off and I found that the regen in Sport mode seemed very present in comparison. It felt like the difference between "Whisper" and "Engage" in the Mach E. However Lightning Sport mode was more aggressive than Engage.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Did you have any conversations with their engineers about the difference in the mapping? Why did they choose that in Sport? Why didn't they allow for adjustable regen? Just seems like I should drive mine around in Sport all the time.
Great video, Tom. I had been eagerly waiting for this range test. I am curious to hear your thoughts (so far) on the maneuverability of the F-150 versus the Rivian you recently drove. Does it feel bigger when you are parking and getting around town or is it not very noticeable?
Definitely bigger, but overall the size while driving down the road isn't that much... But parking, u-turns would be notably different. the Rivian turn radius is notably better than the F150.
I have a 2017 Nissan Leaf I averaged 60 miles a day to work and back home I used to have a 2015 XLT F-150 traded it in for ASD Edge 2019 for my wife we both miss having a pickup truck which is 3 hour drive I'm thinking about the F-150 Pro Mod I like the price don't need all the other amenities the F-150 Lariat 300 range office I think I'll do fine
Enjoy your vids Tom. A bit curious about your mixing SI units with old English imperial units … miles per kWh? A bit confusing as the US mile is also less than the English mile. Which old mile are you using? Just a dig carry on.
What I'm most interested in is how many kW you needed to add to get the battery back to 100%? Its great that it could go that far but if the on board charging system is not efficient then the overall miles/kW will be much less
Hey Tom, Great video. I always enjoy your videos. I am really interested in the Lightning, could you make a video or describe how your experience was in throughout your purchase of the F150 Lightning. You know, from ordering, purchasing, getting possession. Any tips. Any challenges. Your thoughts. Thank You, for the info. Good Bye from Los Angeles.
You make me laugh because you talk with both your hands "off" the steering wheel! Thanks for the video. Okay, I stand corrected, I see that you are using Blue Cruise :)
Because Ford didn't spend the $ to build in a clutch disengagement pack for the front or rear motors like some other dual motor evs have. Maybe the next gen ground up ev lightning from blue oval city in TN around 2025 will offer that feature? 🤔
Always giving Ford and other legacy autos the full benefit of the doubt. When the range on the Tesla did not meet the EPA estimate, you showed so much disappointment. Can't have it both ways.
Really interesting range test! Ford had its reasons for largely keeping the ICE F-150 platform for the Lightning. I wonder how much efficiency gain would be possible with greater optimizations to the body and chassis, as Chevy is promising with its EV pickup.
I think they made the right call keeping the look the same for now. Make the the move transparent for the doubters. Once people get used to EVs, there’s no going back and they can start optimizing for airflow. If they made a different looking streamlined truck now, it would get the EV stigma.
@@briankensington8459 farley already said publicly that the next gen ground up lightning coming from the all new blue oval city in TN around 2025. Would be controversially styled but also it would go 75-100+more miles on the same size battery pack as this lightning uses. 👍🏻

Tom, It was a pleasure charging next to you while you were filming. We made it to NY and back to MD using the Electrify America in our white lariat ER..
Hey John, thanks for checking in here. It was cool to see both trucks charging side by side and with a Rivian next to us, no less!
This is awesome! I just got a model 3 and your channel has been the most informative about charging and battery usage and info. Thanks! I am also thinking about letting my 2021 raptor go and getting a lighting. Congrats on the Truck!!!
Loved it Tom! We in Australia won't get this truck but hopefully will get it's smaller sibling the Ranger and heard yesterday from Nikki that it sounds like Ford will be coming out with the Maverick & Ranger Lightning editions for overseas markets. Cannot wait to see your other tests you will be doing with your new F150 Lightning. :)
Great vid and a result for such a huge car.
Great test Tom and decent range for this large vehicle.
Amazing imo it matches or even slightly beats the purpose built ground up ev rivian r1t in efficiency. Great job fomoco I say.
Now go make hundreds of thousands of them and offer us small business owners a reg cab 6.5' rwd option for under 35k please. 😀
Another great video, Tom. - Since you will be creating a lot of F-150 Lightning content, I think you need to start each of these videos with you popping out of the frunk! 😉
Great video...going to subscribe yo see what else you do with the F150 Lightning :) I live watching these range tests. The range test I want to see is how far will the f150 lightning go on a $20 fast charge vs $20 gas fill of a f150 ICE.
That’s great mileage for that big ass truck. 🙌
First time watching your videos. I came over from E for Electric
Thanks, stay for a while. :)
I too found Tom through E for Electric. Alex is entertaining. Tom is educational. They're a great mix.
I totally agree
Hey, your Bolt died right outside where I attended MangaNEXT 2010! Such fond memories.
270.3 miles real range done mostly at 70mph versus 283 miles (EPA Highway)/324miles (EPA) .....truly impressive...i'll bet hypermiling this car would be fun
how would you hyper mile an electric? shut it off? LOL
@@02hreblue30 LOL!
Tom Gratz on your new truck. Thank God you didn't get that ugly blue color that everyone is getting. These early truck test are setting up the standard atm at what is expected in these early days of electric PU. Comparing them to car stats is all we have atm though. Enjoy your truck and I look forward to seeing more of it.
I actually really thought about Antimatter Blue. It looks black unless you get close
Let’s try this in the wintertime!
This was really useful. Thanks!
Good luck getting your Intelligent Backup equipment! From the forums it looks like you can't really get that hardware if you're just a regular Lightning reservation holder. At least not in 2022.
I'm about to order mine, let's see
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney I hope you get it because I'm looking forward to your review of the system. I have an Enphase solar array already and SunRun didn't respond to multiple requests about whether it would integrate, even when I told them I wanted them to add to my array at the same time. Same story from many others. I decided to wait on my Lightning since I'm really buying it to be a battery backup for the house (that drives).
Great video Tom!
Great video! It would be great Tom if you could do the same test in a Standard Range Battery to compare efficiency.
I hope to
Town and country Ford did a hwy range test on a base pro lightning. Got around 220 miles before the owner did a leveling kit&34s.
With it's fairly low efficiency, I wouldn't expect heat pump vs. heater to be nearly as noticable as in higher efficiency cars.
Thanks, Tom. Nice choice with the Lightning.
Good to hear your thoughts on TFL with Andre 👍🏻
I found with my 2023 Lariat extended range Lightning it needs to do about 2.2 efficiency to match the EPA range. That is about 65 miles per hour on the highway.
Congratulations, Tom! That's a beautiful truck. I know you've been anxious to get it.
2.1 is darned good for a truck going 70. That is plenty of range since it is a good idea to stop for a bit every 2 hours just to stay alert. Your Lightning can go over 3 and a half hours @70 w/o needing to charge. I look forward to your charging test and future Lightning videos.
that's great news. 275 miles range with 70mph speed. great range for a EV truck!
I Will Follow You videos thank you
It would be interesting to see a towing range test. A lot of folks buy trucks to haul stuff or to tow their boat or camper. Perhaps even a high elevation camper tow - can you make it to a campground in the mountains and back again without getting stranded since charging spots aren't as common as gas stations.
Thank the EV Gods for a big battery, it will come in handy. Nice to see Ford doing a great job!
Thank you very informative 👍 😎
Congrats on finally getting your truck! Really good results. Please try to get your hands on a Standard Range to test. This is such an expensive vehicle and i'm trying to decide if the SR meets my needs.
Getting one soon to test
Great result.
Nice video!
I drove mine 96 miles with a 2300 foot gain in altitude. 65 mph except for a couple 55 mph canyon curvy areas and my mi/kw was 2.0.
Can you guys do a side by side 70mph range test between the F150 Lightening and Cybertruck? I'd like to see the same exact conditions, terrain, temp, etc. and see the efficiency numbers of each.
I wish you would've pulled up the trip screen it would've been nice to see how was actually used for driving and how much for creature comfort.
That's nice range. I'll be curious what the winter range is. It would be great if they could make them more efficient as 2.1 in the summer is bad for most EVs, but it makes sense for a pickup truck.
Please repeat this range test in winter, like you promised. Thanks
About time
You went farther than I thought you would. Highway driving in an EV is one of the least efficient ways to drive an EV. Get that miles per KWH to 2.5 and you got 321 miles. I’ve seen these trucks in person and they are certainly impressive. And they can actually be cheaper than the gas models depending on how you equip them…
Now if they will just make my Maverick Hybrid that I’ve been waiting over a year for…
Hybrids are kind of fun, too.
Thanks Tom! Are you going to do a range test with towing a load like a camper? That's what I am curious about.
Eventually, yes. But I need to set that up because I don't have a trailer or camper to use yet. I think the next one will be with max payload because I can arrange that easier.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney you can use my camper. A bit far from you in pittsburgh.
I wonder what the result would have been at 60 or 65 MPH?
The regular F-150 did really well in its crash tests. How well did the Lightning fare?
I saw a range test towing a moderately sized camper trailer…
85 miles before alarms started going off
Great review.
Yes, Sport Mode increases the lift-off regenerative braking force.
@@StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney Did you have any conversations with their engineers about the difference in the mapping? Why did they choose that in Sport? Why didn't they allow for adjustable regen? Just seems like I should drive mine around in Sport all the time.
Very nice. Hope you take it to the mountains tower how it climbs.
Wonder how efficient the regenerative braking is going down long hills. I bet every EV and hybrid have different %.
Do you think the batteries need to be cycled so many times before you will get optimal mileage per kwh ?
thanks for clarifying fahrenheit. 70 celsius is 158 F. that's unusually hot.
Great video, Tom. I had been eagerly waiting for this range test. I am curious to hear your thoughts (so far) on the maneuverability of the F-150 versus the Rivian you recently drove. Does it feel bigger when you are parking and getting around town or is it not very noticeable?
It's noticeably bigger
Definitely bigger, but overall the size while driving down the road isn't that much... But parking, u-turns would be notably different. the Rivian turn radius is notably better than the F150.
69 miles in the second quarter? Niiiiiice….
Great truck, Tom. Enjoy!
Go hunt Some EV to charge V2L 😉
Assuming 270 miles @ 70 mph and a 131 KWh battery, that's 34 KW (~45 HP) on average out of the battery to get the truck down the road at that speed.
Tom, great content. Would be interested to know what the efficiency would be if you put a tonneau cover on the back, would think it would help.
Sounds like the EPA needs to start doing more honest range tests.
Enjoy your vids Tom. A bit curious about your mixing SI units with old English imperial units … miles per kWh? A bit confusing as the US mile is also less than the English mile. Which old mile are you using? Just a dig carry on.
our pints and gallons might be different but the good ol' mile is just the same!
I wonder if the range would improve if the truck had a Tonneau or some other cover over the bed?
What I'm most interested in is how many kW you needed to add to get the battery back to 100%? Its great that it could go that far but if the on board charging system is not efficient then the overall miles/kW will be much less
That video is coming up soon
Hey Tom, Great video. I always enjoy your videos. I am really interested in the Lightning, could you make a video or describe how your experience was in throughout your purchase of the F150 Lightning. You know, from ordering, purchasing, getting possession. Any tips. Any challenges. Your thoughts. Thank You, for the info. Good Bye from Los Angeles.
You make me laugh because you talk with both your hands "off" the steering wheel! Thanks for the video. Okay, I stand corrected, I see that you are using Blue Cruise :)
I probably should have mentioned that earlier in the video - I didn't realize until I was editing it.
Speaking of range, does anyone know why you can't disengage awd? I assume that would help the range
When will you be doing a tow range test?
The platform is a complete redesign, the body and interior share many pieces.
