Cold Weather Christmas Day Range Test: Can The Lightning Make It?

- I attempt to take my 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning on a Christmas day road trip from New Jersey to Vermont - over 200 miles on a single charge. It's pretty cold (17F / -8C) and I just replaced the stock tires with BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2s which have greater rolling resistance so I'm not sure if we'll make it. Come along for the ride and see if the Lightning can make it without forcing me to stop along the route and charge.

I hope every EV owner understands this was an experiment for an educational video. During 5 years driving an EV with my wife, I would never risk getting to a destination with 5 or less miles range. You never know if there’s a potential traffic jam or detour. The consequences are too high. Kudos to Meredith for staying calm. I recommend stopping for a 10-15 minute charge to guaranty safe arrival.
Hope someone tests it in winter conditions. My M3 takes a lot more power at -30 than 10F.
Understand that normally traffic jams reduce speed and actually INCREASE your available range.
@@GregHassler Agree with slight range increase by driving slower, but it also means resistive heater is on for a much longer time. And a detour could add 5 miles. Do you really want to risk it with your wife or with children? Running out of charge when alone is one thing, but there would be hell to pay if it’s with your spouse.
I sometimes drive my Leaf till the percentage goes blank. Having driven till turtle mode I know that I have 6 miles left plus what's left in turtle mode. I don't make a habit of this since I went into turtle mode only once in six years. When one gets used to driving electric one knows when it's safe to push it. I believe the winter test run was expertly done. There's always a warning when the battery runs too low and Tom nailed it.

My 4 cylinder Mazda SUV goes from 320 mile range to 250 miles in the winter. Between cold mechanical bits and the stupid "winter blend" gas, the mileage drops big time, particularly when they switch gas blends.

Yep same for my 2020 dodge Durango 3.6 v6 it goes from 800km down to 500km in the winter months up here in Canada my house use more energy in the winter it takes energy to produce heat every thing is less efficient when it gets cold so the only thing evs need to get better at is towing and charging but the rest evs already beat ice

Nobody ever gave a thought to winter range until EVs came along. Everyone was vaguely aware that their MPG went down but it wasn't important to figure out why. Because gas stations are everywhere range just didn't matter. On the positive side for ICE cars is that you get some of your money back with heat. 70 cents out of every dollar goes out the radiator in an ICEV, in winter you get to use some of that heat to warm the cabin. With EVs you have to pay for the cabin heat, it's not free the way it is with ICEVs. It wouldn't matter if there were chargers everywhere but that's not the case for CCS cars. In Vermont the only EA is in Lebanon NH, aside from that there are only 62KW CCS chargers. Tesla has Vermont covered from Brattleboro to St Johnsbury so in a Tesla you can go anywhere in Vermont without much worry.

With all the clickbait out there on the subject, it is nice to see an honest and reasonable discussion of the issue.
A pro tip I've found on my Bolt EUV is that you get a slight comfort benefit in the cold by closing the shade on the panoramic sunroof. However, if it's sunny, keep it open. Great to see Meredith in the video and Happy Holidays!
Very good point I made the same observation. It appeared to be overcast, so I would've had the shade closed to help hold in the heat. Which would've also saved on climate energy used.
Tom, cannot thank you enough for this video. We do almost the same exact trip nearly every week (Bergen County to Manchester VT area), and its 200 miles door to door. I've been really struggling with the range drop on the Lightning in the past week or so, but this was encouraging. The DTE meter in the Lightning leaves quite a bit to be desired, but seeing a practical experiment succeed gives me courage! Just wish there were more charging options on the route though :)
Did basically the same this weekend in my Lightning Platinum ER…. GOM said I would be 22 miles short when I left home but drove 65-70 the whole way and had 30 miles left when I got there. Trip home slightly different route estimated me short by 2 miles and had 50 left when home. Sweet spot for my truck is about 65-68mph. Any slower and I get antsy, much faster and the miles per kw suffers.

*All* vehicles lose range in the cold! If you have an ICE vehicle, and do a lot of *short* trips - your MPG will be *terrible*. Warm up times in the summer is only a mile or so - in the cold winter, this can be as much as *6* miles, before the ignition computer can go to the regular "lean" mixture. And like any vehicle, increased aero drag from colder more dense air, and if there's water/snow on the road surface - that's a lotta' rolling resistance and sometimes slippage, too.
This is why you’re my most trusted source of information about EVs. No hype, just straight forward facts. Still waiting for your FCSP review. I just had mine wire yesterday. It’s a nightmare to get it to connect to my network which it has not done yet.

Cool video! My family and I are taking a road trip from Massachusetts to Florida at the end of March! Our lightning has the standard range battery and we figure about 2 full days of driving to be safe. It will be an adventure!

I wonder if this Lightning model would get 10 miles greater range switching to a heat pump system. It’s a shame Ford didn’t start production with a heat pump, but it didn’t seem to hurt sales.
Meredith: Have Tom plant a Robin Holly about five feet off the corner of your home at the newly added service. Find a nursery with one that is around 6 to 7 feet tall already. Tom can then trim them to any girth or height desired over the years leaving you with the perfect size. I coached mine to two stories and a diameter of five feet. They are hardy and not fussy at all. Thanks for putting up with all of Tom’s adventures and projects.

My Lightning Lariat is scheduled to be built the third week of January, so I am watching all of your videos with great interest as to what to expect. Have you noticed any change in range for night time driving? I would expect some loss in range with all of your night driving lights on.
Not really They are LEDs and use very little energy

Great video Tom. Question - since you arrived with such low state of charge, did you plug in the vehicle at your in-laws house? If so, was it just a standard 120v outlet or something stronger? In either case would that even be enough to charge the vehicle high enough for you to head back home the next day? Thanks!
Yes, I plugged right in. I installed a 240-v charger in their garage about 10 years ago.
How long did it take to get back to 100?

So for maximum winter range, you need to precondition the battery and cabin, stick with the all-season tires if you can, and let your wife do the driving.

Awesome video Tom! Your efforts build confidence within the EV community. I can only imagine Merideth rolling her eyes over and over during this trip! All of us range weirdos have a Merideth in our life that we annoy. 27 degrees, I usually lose 30% on my trips. The bonus is hilarious.. Merideth took same trip ended up w/ 10% SOC driving vs. Tom’s 3%! I know, different day, different conditions.. But we all know she had to chuckle about that ending, well done you two.

Great video! I have a standard range Lightning Lariat. I'm in the Hudson Valley and just got back from Okemo where I charged at the mountain twice for free (2nd day got to 100%). Made it back home averaging 2 kWh without having to stop. Ps...Another Lightning was there at the mountain charging with NJ plates (you? 🤔)
Those are really good results, especially with the KO2s! I will be doing a long range (colder) trip next week in mine (Albany NY area to Pittsburgh PA) on the stock Grabbers. It will be an interesting comparison. I have been looking for better tires in the snow and would love it if the KO2s aren't that big of an impact!
Once again very interesting video! Lots of good data points! I picked up my lightning (Pro with SR) a few weeks ago in Texas and drove back to California - 1700 miles! Had some of the same of weather conditions you had... Very low temperatures at night (24f-34f) going across west Texas through the desert. A lot of high winds -and questionable range availability to the next DC charger! After about three days of driving, I made it without any problems. Certainly learned some of the same lessons that you illustrated in your holiday trip. Like the bonus footage - nice to meet the "Boss" behind the scenes! I'm not sure my "Boss" would have dealt with the same challenges as well!

Vermont's charging infrastructure for CCS is pretty poor along i91.
Agreed. There is a new FLO DC fast charger in Bennington that I've used and it works well.
I wouldn't want to go to Vermont in a CCS car, aside from the EA in Lebanon NH all they have are 62KW CCS chargers. Tesla has Vermont very well covered, there are Superchargers in Brattleboro, Rutland, Lebanon NH, Berlin, Burlington and a new one all the way up St Johnsbury.

The noise of that supposedly silent EV meant I couldn't hear him once he started driving.
I have noticed about 10 percent loss of range when it’s 90 to 100 degrees outside. I have the extended range, I can tell when both compressors are running as the range is dropping faster! Almost had some range anxiety today!
I just completed a round trip over Christmas from San Diego, CA to Boulder, CO with my F150 Lightning Lariat. This includes going from sea level (in San Diego), over the Vail Summit (el. 10,662 ft.), and winding up at Boulder elevation of 5318 ft. We went through the very frigid weather, hitting an outside temperature of -22F and basking in -6F temperature in Boulder. By slowing down to around 65 MPH and keeping the cabin temperature at 64F (yes, e-heat was on), the whole trip averaged 2.1 mi/kwh. My standard range battery forced me to charge every 2 to 3 hours which means we had plenty of breaks which greatly cut down on fatigue. All in all, my family agrees that it was a great trip and we are eager to road trip in the Lightning again.

Would love to see a 70 MPH Range test on the BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2s on a warm day. I grew up in NY/NJ and know you'll get a random really nice and warm day some time in the next couple of months that would be comparable to your other range test. I bet it takes a 10-15% range hit.

In my case I've noticed the Ford GOM is very conservative. I did an out and back of 176 km with an estimated range of 177 km when I left. I figured I'd stop for a quick DCFC charger the way home but at my halfway point still had 111 km of range, and by the time I arrived home still had 56 km. I was driving conservatively on the highway, but it just shows you the margin for error.
Great video as always! I’ve found in my Tucson that the cabin stays warmer with the shade closed. Since Meredith was able to average a higher range in her drive home, does that make her the better driver? 🤔

The other factor to consider on a trip like this is where/how to re-charge after arriving. Will your hosts be able to provide you a plug, if one’s available at all? What other options are there? Esp when arriving with such a low state of charge.
Absolutely. I installed a level 2 charger at my in-laws about ten years ago so I plugged in and was all charged up by the next day.

I have a 2022 Mustang Mach E GT Performance: I have seen as much as a 30% range loss depending on how I drive when the heat on at temperatures beneath 30F. Next Month (Jan. 2023) I am driving to Boston so this will be an "acid test" for the car. Although recent tests prove I can make it to my destination (and the parking lot has 4 Level 2 chargers for a 4 day stay) at 197 miles by Google Earth I will take no chances and charge at the halfway point (or a 2/3 way point depending on the remaining range) then finish the journey then charge again at either of those points on the way back where one will be a mandatory stop to make a purchase (CT). The next one will be in April going up to Maine. In that case I will charge up at the halfway point and there are reported chargers at the hotel and there is an EA station 3.5 miles away). Temperatures should be higher then so the range will not be hurting too much.
I'm at minute 4;48 and I'm having range anxiety by proxy 😂

My 2020 Tacoma DC 4x4 has a range of 310 miles under ideal conditions. My personal range behind the wheel is only 120 miles.
Great video, how did you charge at your destination? My Ford mobile charge cord faults out in cold conditions. BTW I’m getting 1.7mi/kWh in cold conditions with my Lariat ER as well.

Tom, great video, as always. I was curious what version of software are you running on your Lightning. There are comments on the Lightning forum that the most recent software updates have negatively effected the range estimator. I have not received the latest software updates on my Lightning, but curious to see what you have seen if you have gotten it. Continue the good work!
Tom do you wish the mi/kWh meter went out to the hundreths on a truck? Because maybe for your math you’d want to know 1.65 vs 1.74, both of which presumably might be simplified as 1.7 mi/kWh in your display. I think Rivian implemented this change recently in an update for exactly this reason.
And for a car like a Kia EV6 I don’t think you really need this extra digit since up at 4 mi/kWh 0.1 is only +/- 2.5% whereas at 1.7 mi/kWh 0.1 is about 6%. Hopefully that logic makes sense.

Good point, but this can be manually calculated. The use of energy was 97% from 131kWh pack. That is 127kWh for the 210 miles.
So it is the value 1.654 miles/kWh or better unit would be 60.5 kWh/100miles = 37.8 kWh/100km.
@@teranova5566 the point is you can not do quick calculations on the fly and you can not discern or monitor your target so you need to overshoot your target by 6% to be safe where as someone in a Mach E or whatever doing the same calculation with the same mi/kWh display will at most be overshooting by 2.5% in the case of a car getting 4.0 mi/kWh. And yes the Wh/mile consumption is fine however this is America no one but an engineer like me is going to look at Wh/km, only Tesla folk in the US are familiar with Wh/mile, so finally Ford should just add a significant digit to the mi/kWh reading and be done with it. If they also want to have these other consumption values available that’s great but they need to fix what’s broken with the efficiency readout (Wh/mileage is consumption while mi/kWh is efficiency of course.)
@@skyemalcolm Volvo EV folks also get Wh/mile (expressed as kWh/100 miles on the display). Probably polestar users as well, but I am only familiar with Volvo. Chevy and Ford do the miles per kWh. Wh per mile makes much more sense mathematically. Drive out and back getting 2 miles per kWh one of way and 8 m/kWh the other way...Average is 5m/kWh? Nope 3.2.
I think it's interesting that many tests are done worst case scenario, so that no one knows what one gets if they hyper mile in an EV.
I do think it's great to know how winter affects range. With the aggressive tires and cold I think it went well.
I wish my Leaf got at least 150 miles with aggressive tires. Unfortunately my Leaf has a 24 Kilowatt battery with 25 percent degradation. It works well as a local daily driver. I have a gas vehicle for distance driving
How many miles on the odometer does your leaf have to be at 25% degradation?

I would like to see how the 12 volt battery in an EV functions and it's importance. What is the chemistry? What is the charging voltage? Does it act like a deep cycle battery where all electrical functions in the vehicle other than propulsion draw from it. Have you checked the digital voltage of the 12 volt after exhausting the main battery? Is the charging rate linear? I hope you consider a video that may answer this or more questions regarding this old school 12 volt battery.
Your wife is kind to let you try experiments with near zero and 17 deg. She's a keeper! Nice information for us, though.
Charging my lightning platinum to 80% in the winter, I'm only getting around 160 miles during the charge. Depending on the temperature, I've been as low as 1.2 mpk, so I might squeeze 192 miles out of it. I've never seen 300 miles at 100% charge.
How do you like the KO2's on the highway as far as noise and ride quality goes vs the stock tires? I've been thinking of getting some more aggressive tires for mine.
Definitely a little louder and a little more harsh of a ride, but still very comfortable

EV are here and great that Ford is moving ahead. This small trip is nice but well below my needs. Add two more people and a few bags of luggage, couple of bikes and or snow and we can't get 120 miles. We are getting there but just not quite yet.

Just for the winter. I'll be doing back to back range tests in the spring

Tom - I would say that from your weather map that was a slight “quartering tailwind”, slightly behind you from a direct crosswind, so it should have had very little effect.
Well I can tell you for sure the wind gusts were pushing the truck to the right. The Blue Cruise was struggling to keep the vehicle centered

How does elevation affect range on an EV? If you think about it, the air is less dense so there should be less drag at highway speeds. Granted an elevation change shouldn't make much of a difference.

Great video. How did you charge at your destination? Was there a level 2 charger you could plug into?
I installed a 240-v level 2 charger at my in-laws about 10 years ago. Been driving these electric things for a while now...😁

When you got to the in-laws with 5 miles left, how did you charge? Do you have a travel charger and do they have a NEMA-1450 or did you set them up with a wall charger?
Yeah. I installed a 240-v level 2 charger there ten years ago. I've been driving my EVs up there since 2013.
