HOW DID WE FIND OUR PROPERTY? Buying a Tractor, Visas & Other FAQs

- It was a great start to the week here on the farm as we worked together to build a rustic fire pit from stone. But after days on end of torrential downpours, work unfortunately ground to a halt 👎
As we were forced to be indoors hiding from the rain, we decided to sit down & get in the Christmas spirit! Victoria got crafty and made a Christmas wreath using foliage from the farm as we sat and answered some of your most frequently asked questions.

Hi I'm Ricky 👋
I moved from the rat race of the UK to a more peaceful life in Portugal with my girlfriend (& dog) & we bought a 3 acre off-grid farm.
Follow my journey as I document our life here in Central Portugal & the MANY DIY projects that I'll be tackling including renovating the 2 stone buildings on our property & converting a 30,000 litre water tank into a swimming pool!

I'm pretty sure Ricky you won't object me saying that your Victoria is the nicest person seen on UA-cam recently ❤
Zero objections. She’s a keeper 😊
.....and that's going some - considering there are around 2,700,000 new uploads EVERY DAY.... !!!!
That's a LOTTA pressure......
Sweet observation, let´s not tell her x
They really are such a cute couple actually.
I agree. Cannot stop admiring her grace and strength. Victoria is a wonderful woman.
The wreath is gorgeous! You're turning out to be one of my fav UA-cam couples. 💛
Ahhh thanks Elsa ☺️
What I enjoy abt Rick is that he is so organised about the work around his projects.
Thanks Farah! ☺️
What a lovely video. There is so much chaos and drama in Australia with horrendous floods that it was perfect just sitting at the table with you and the dogs, watching Victoria make the wreath while you chatted. I feel calm now, ready to sleep. Thankyou for sharing your exploits with us. More please. Hugs from South Australia.🌈❤️🐨
Thanks Jill. I wasn’t aware that there was still bad flooding in oz. Sorry to hear that. Glad we could bring some relaxation 😊
Great job! Wreath is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.Happy New Year!
Victoria, you've made such a beautiful wreath! Nice work on the fire pit.
I agree Victoria is an absolute darling. Lucky man!💖
Noel as in a great - great granny Noel. 😊
Loved the lighting when you were doing the Q&A and Victoria was making that beautiful wreath. Really enjoyed that!
Glad you liked it Judy 😊
Love the wreath Victoria! It turned out beautifully!
As for the name of your channel, how about Our life by Ricky since you do all the filming and narrating it is by Ricky. That way the name is still recognizable but will include Victoria, the puppies and any other additions to the family. The wreath is beautiful and it was made from materials from your land which makes it very special. 🥰🥰🥰
That’s a good suggestion! 👍🏼
Who films the flowers, bugs, and small animals?
Just watching now in Dec 2023. Your wreath is lovely.
Victoria, thanks for the great idea for a Christmas wreath! We have lots of olive and pine trees, but no eucalyptus, but will wander around and see what we can get. Maybe rosemary, since it grows huge here.
LOVE the smell of rosemary! The eucalyptus smelt beautiful too so if you can find some around then it’s well worth it! 😊
Hi, Victoria and Ricky !
Just wanted to say that today I found out and only by chance from another channel that container homes are only good for ten years. Now for quite some time I wanted one of those, but this news has put me off the idea. I can't believe that for 25 years I've been talking about them and nobody said a word. According to these guys in, Canada who just started to build their own container home and they did that insulation you were talking about they would have to go through the whole process again in ten years. I don't think it's worth it and materials will be totally more expensive then. Just a thought.
I wasn’t aware of that either Bill. I know they have a limited lifespan for use at sea carrying cargo but I just assumed they would last forever as a house (if cared for) as the steel would be protected from the elements? I’m guessing it was Tyler & Todd that you watched? I know they’re building a container home. I’ll have to give it a watch
@@LifebyLiving 👍
Yes, it was them, on the episode from 8 days ago. Boy I couldn't remember their names I'm new to their adventures and they caught my attention because of the container home building and I watched two episodes this morning.
🎉❤the wreath! Love your channel and appreciate Ricky’s calm voice
That's a wonderful gate..
Fire pit will be lovely when finished. We are working our way through your video's. The wreath looked gorgeous and I love what you have done with inside seating area with the lights etc.
Thanks!
Aw, you're such a lovely couple. I've enjoyed your videos right from the start. Victoria may be teeny weeny, but flippin' 'eck she sure is strong!! Love the wreath Victoria, natural and organic. Look at Poppy and Ted go!! They're so good for each other🥰 "Life with Ricky"..."two stone buildings & a swimming pool"..."what Victoria & Ricky did next"..."Portuguese Living"..."The good life in Portugal"😘
Victoria, the wreath is very pretty. Ricky, the fire pit looks amazing. You are both very particular with your projects.
Thank you Rick. It is nice to see Victoria in the videos. She is a very nice lady. Well done Victoria on the wreath. I am happy that Poppy is doing better. She had so much fun running around the farm.
The firepit is going to look awesome when it is done. Love and Blessings to you all.
Doris, Penrith 🇦🇺🦘
Poppy seems super excited and happy to whizz around the field. Loving the background when doing the wreath making and Q&A , took me a while to realise that it was the outdoor area under the sail canopy.
It’s actually inside the main house. Confusing because we’ve brought the outdoor sofa inside over the winter 😊😁
@@LifebyLiving haha it was the corner sofa that made me think outside
You two are awesome 😎
You gave those 2 dogs an amazing life and they’re so so lucky to have you as their puppy parents.
Best of luck to you in all you do.
God bless
Your bear and poppie are the luckiest dogs😊😊 that fire pit looks awsome already!
What a lovely video people. Loving the fire-pit. It's going to be fabulous when it's finished. Loving the Christmas wreath as well. What a talented pair you are.
Ahhh thank you Jacqui! ❤️
That was a very entertaining & informative video from both of you, thank you so much guys. The Christmas wreath looked lovely Victoria 👍🤗
Lovely wreath! Lovelier people. ❤
My Dad and Mom acquired a used Kubota along with their 23 acres in central Texas. They used it a lot for 20 years and it was still in very usable condition when they passed in a 2-year period. Whoever bought the property got that as a perk. However, their land (although not all level) was not broken up with a bunch of stone walls.
You might be better off with a mini-Bobcat or equivalent.
Whatever you buy, if is is used, try to get the original owner’s manual or see if it’s available online. These machines need ten or so lubricants (very specific) to keep running. It’s essential to know all the specifications if you want to keep a tractor or mower well maintained and functioning. Best wishes for finding the most useful machine for your land!❣️
All Homesteaders need a 4 wheel handy cart. They are cheap. Carry very heavy loads, like stones. Carry groceries. Carry children, they love riding in the cart.
Nice to see you guys again I really appreciate your responding to our questions 🤗🤗🤗 Victoria you are such an artist 🥰🥰🥰Poppy is looking happy and healthy 🎉🎉🎉 Merry Christmas from Nairobi ❤️
Thanks Michelle! I agree, Victoria is an artist & very talented with all things craft based! Wishing you a fantastic Christmas in Nairobi 🎄❤️
Beautiful wreath made by Victoria, now I want to make one, but mine will be made out of artificial decorations. You both are doing such an amazing job with your land. My only wish is for 2 videos a week instead of 1.
Happy Holidays 🎄🎅
You guys have done such great job in making your home very warm and cozy. Victoria, the wreath is stunning and Ricky the fire pit is beautiful Harriet and I wish you all the best for a great life together. Happy Holidays ! to you and your family🌲🌲 Sending you much love💕💕💕from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki.
P.S. We think should rename the channel simply: Life by Ricky and Victoria
Can't believe you whipped that wreath up in the background of that short video, it looks awesome 🎉😊
Aww Victoria, that wreath is really nice. Clever girl..
Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
i would just like to say that i watch you as much as i can as we have an old farm house which we are renovating , and i find victory as funny a person in the way she may say 's things and it makes me just keep coming back.
Another lovely video❤️. Great to see Teddy feeling friskier and enjoying a good romp with Poppy! I LOVE the mini Stonehenge feature in the rustically beautiful fire pit and look forward to watching its debut performance. Victoria’s wreath is so pretty. Very cool that it’s all from your property, too! Thanks to all four of you for another peek into your Portuguese journey ❤️☮️
Re a name, this might be too long, but this just popped into my head: Victoria and Ricky’s Adventures in Portugal ( or Ricky and Victoria’s…)
Thanks Esme ❤️ Ted has definitely enjoyed having his playmate back! Thanks for the name suggestion too…we’ve really got no idea! 😁
It is good to have a name that is easy to remember so people can find your channel easily. I can't wait to see the finished "tiny house".
Ricky & Victoria in Portugal?
How about Rick and Vic in Portugal? 😆
Hi there , new channel name , What next with Victoria and Ricky/ Ricky and Victoria, you just never know what is coming next , even though you make plans for your next job in and around your land / homestead, you can always be thrown off course and have to concentrate on something else weather and season depending. So great watching polly run around happy and free.xx see you next time
I just had to stop, found your Chanel last night, 5pm next day still watching. You two are doing what l wanted to do fifty years ago, l look back with regret. Must take a break, your a lovely young couple, l know your Chanel may be finalised but l will still wish you luck. Love from a Pom in Oz. XX
I think THEO just bought a mini digger. Maybe you could borrow it when he isn't using it? I could be wrong, though.
That's going to be a magical fire pit. Can't wait to see it in all its glory soon! Your wild river is shaping up to be a charming feature as well 😍
Would love to have a river running through the farm! 😍
Life by Ricky that'd be sick. We had exactly that a few weeks ago after some crazy snow meltage and had to pump away a "surprise pond". It was cute for a minute though 😄
Your wreath is beautiful Victoria. The fire pit is looking great. You guys work well together.
"Life by Victoria and Ricky", that was an easy question😍. Super video, thank you to both of you. All the best to you and your wonderful dogs.
What a great video! I loved the wreath making! I’ve always used a metal wire or grapevine base; I thoroughly enjoyed seeing it come together.
Ricky you are so easy to listen to and explain things so well! I like that you just roll with what happens. It is so normal and refreshing!
Well done, Ricky and Victoria! The
You made carrying those heavy stones for building the fire pit look easy!😊
Loved seeing Poppy and Teddy enjoying their run-about. Put a big smile on my face😆
The fairy lights are pretty and just the right thing for the Christmas atmosphere .... and adding the beautiful hand made wreath is the cherry on top!
May you enjoy a blessed, happy and safe Festive Season and enjoy Christmas lunch.🌲🌲
Special hugs to the hounds 🐶🐶
I love your reef, Victoria. You can always find new additions to add latter. I have seen ribbons, pinecones, and even bent stick spires attached to other cool projects.
Your fire pit is a real art object, that is a serious approach, just great! 🙂
I’m with Victoria, what a beautiful name, why would anyone chose Vickie instead???
I just love your videos. You guys work the way I like to work. So happy you’re on UA-cam ☺️.
Victoria, your wreath is beautiful!!!
I love your wreath Victoria, well done 👏👏👏👍😉🇮🇪☘️
Why did you not use your wheelbarrow to move the rocks. I love the fire pit!
Victoria & Ricky's fazenda is another suggestion. Love your improvised wreath making Victoria so creative. Enjoying following your progress on your homestead
In Texas we make stone firepits but the limestone gets darkened....that you are cleaning them is funny!
Plenty of stones on your land..the abundance of trees will no doubt be a great asset
Thank you for the Q & A session. You answered a lot of questions. Love the wreath Victoria!
Thank you Mona 😊
Wreath looks great and the firepit too!
Love watching you two - and your lovely dogs too
Love your projects, energy, care, and those two dogs. Woop.
Hi friends, plan the work for the digger and lifting beam in same time. Digger can do the most of the work lifting.
Best regards from Wiesbaden Germany
Stay save, have fun
Gerhard
So nice to see both of you - sitting in freezing cold Germany it was a pleasure to watch your Q&A in that warm surrounding.
I've discovered in the last few weeks with all of the rain that we need a French drain too. I'm really looking forward to the digging. 🙄
Back breaking work!
Awwwww….Victoria and Ricky, you are just so sweet together! Along with your lovely ‘fur babies’ you are just a joy to watch!! If I can be so forward, I would suggest “Our Portuguese Paradise”. It just seems like paradise to me, the weather is mostly just gorgeous, and you both are so happy!! I loved your Q and A and am watching the second time around now… Best of luck always…M
Thanks Marsha 😊
How oblivious can one be.....I am living in Lisbon and had no idea about the flooding of Metro stations and the Airport. Thank you for making me aware (it's definitely time to learn Portuguese and watch the news). The wreath looks very nice. Good luck with the fire pit!
I don’t watch the Portuguese news at home but they have a tv in the pharmacy so I watched it whilst I queued 😁
You should ask project kamp about some of their sources for used tractors
Hi, regards from Puerto Rico🌞! Love your videos and the wonderful interaction between you two while you work on improving your property. You were very lucky to find a nice fairly flat farm away from the forest so you should not be exposed to direct fires at least. Wish you the best in 2023!
Such a great Vlog. Thank you both for sharing and taking us on your journey. Glad to see Poppy is doing well and looks like she still wants to be everywhere you are. 😂❤
Ay up mi ducks from Mansfield lol
Lovely catch up, could do with sitting round a toasty fire pit tonight up near Ladybrook it’s freezing ! 👍 best wishes to you both and the furry friends. Lovely to see Poppy run free ❤
Ay up ducky. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏼 Funny that you’re near ladybrook - we used to live close to there too on big barn lane!
@@LifebyLiving practically neighbours 😂 👍
What a wonderful video! I've literally just happened across your channel and I've been watching them continuously and so enjoy them. The wreath is beautiful!
The fire will be nice for barbecues with seating. Nick from Project Portugal is selling a small tractor, check out his Utube.
I thought of Nick's tractor too, when he was talking about it... until he got to the part about wanting one that wasn't too old!!
@@sarahnd Could be a good price... 🤔
Nick already sold the tractor.
We use our hand cart to move all our heavy stuff works great!
Great video Ricky and Victoria. It was good to see Poppy running with Teddy; they're both lovely animals. Good job on the wreath Victoria, looks great. I hope you manged to encounter some dry weather to finish the fire pit. See you on the next video.
Thanks Jay 🙂 Unfortunately still not completed as it’s been day after day of heavy rain
Ashes are a great soil amendment
Don't forget you can use the ashes for planting materials. Really like the fire pit. When its raining again remember the drought period. Victoria did a great job on the wreath. Thanks for sharing
We won’t forget 👍🏼 We used a lot of the ashes from last year
You can also use wood ash to get rid of ants and termites.
@@raymondsmith4401 Good tip! Didn't know that
true. ash keeps the roots from rotting in wet soil (soil that seldom gets a chance to dehydrate).
Here's a trivia about ash. A science journal reported that the reason Roman buildings last so long is that volcanic ash (a form of mortar lava) was part of the mix.
I loved your wreath. Nice job
Such a lovely video! Enjoy watching your talks and activities. Happy to see Victoria more and more in this channel. 😍
Victoria is really handy.
Glad you renamed it "Life by Living" - it's why I was drawn to watch you in the first place! Also, regarding the fire risk - we are in Northern California, which is mostly forest and a huge percentage of which has burned in the past several years including large parts of several cities and towns. And of course this is earthquake territory. And for many years we lived in a part of Mexico which gets significant hurricanes most years. The interesting thing is, those don't scare me as much as tornados, which I have no experience with. "Better the devil you know..." you learn how to reduce risk and just get on with life. There's no risk-free place in the world, so you just have to decide what you're willing to live with.
Love the wreath!
Fun video Guys great to get to know both of you. Looking forward to the next video 😌 from a very wet South Africa 🇿🇦
I totally hope your tractor wish comes true this Christmas …. it would make your lives easier on the farm. I can totally see Victoria on the tractor bringing Ricky coffee, water and snacks! Win Win for both.😁 Mother nature is full of surprises lately, with all the rain, you may need to add a canopy to the tractor!😉🌻💥🚜
A tractor with a cab is the dream! 😁
Beautiful wreath & I love the fire pit. You are such a lovely couple.🥰
Victoria has the BEST personality! Ricky is awesome! Keep up the super attitudes!
Oh! Another name: Victoria & Ricky’s projects & crafts! Or Victoria & Ricky’s Homestead Experiments! Thanks for the videos! Love your adventures as a couple - the projects, wreath, olive tasting - caring for the dogs - love you guys! Blessings on your ventures & thanks for sharing🙏🙋♀️!
Greetings from the LooseNatural farm in Andalusia Spain where we are used to saying: THIS YEAR! Good luck.
I thoroughly enjoy all you are sharing. I look forward to following your projects.
The fire pit looks lovely, even though not finished. Beautiful Christmas wreath, Victoria . It must smell amazing with the eucalyptus and orange💗👏🏽
Thanks Christine 😊 It smells lovely!
Beautiful wreath! Just started watching your videos. Loving them!
Ricki and Victoria….. 😁🎉💥
Love your channel!
Get a QUAD there are loads of agri attachments for them, mowers, tillers, mulches, trailers...🤷🏻♂️ You don't need a tractor for a hectare...
The fire pit is really shaping up! Gorgeous wreath! Love those oranges & cinnamon! Best wishes on the name change for your channel! Off the top of my head: Life with Victoria & Ricky; Victoria & Ricky’s Homesteading Adventure; Getting on with all our projects; Building a Home together; Victoria & Ricky’s Homestead Renovation.
Some good suggestions there Susan! Thanks! 😊
Such a joy to meet you both Ricky and Victoria and the 4 Leggeds. Such a beautiful piece of property with gorgeous trees. I love the natural rick walls with the softness of the sectionals and the outlines of the lights. You look so happy sitting in the center of your charming stone house.
Warmest wishes to the two of you and your animals for a beautiful journey together,
Catherine Friederich

Rock walls.
Great job!!! You too are so cute together love love the smiles.
The fire pit is lovely! You both worked very hard to get the pit done!
I expected a lot of water in the Barn, after you cleaned the stones from algae. So now you are an experience richer Ricky.Perhaps you can do some advantage with it while you are building in the Barn. Victoria, the wreath is very pretty. It became so natural and simple with the oranges and the cinnamon.I love it.
I must say I enjoyed the free running of Poppy perhaps more than she did. She was a kind of a starting gunshot. I really laught to see her running up and down the fields.
I so enjoy watching you two & your ENERGY is amazing! Learning also 👍thanks bunches
I think both very nice person.❤
Thank you 😊
How about " Life in the olive grove". What an amazing thing to look out on. Just for a fun project, you can use an old galvanized tub and build a fountain out of staggered size clay pots & dishes ( with drilled hole in the center for air hose). An inexpensive, fish tank submersible pump with air hose running up the center, makes a beautiful cascading fountain in your courtyard. I made one and loved it. Sitting with coffee, the sound & the water's reflective properties put you in a restful trance.
That sounds lovely Kathleen! Would love to see a photo!
Hi Ricky and Victoria
i'am portuguese and live in london ,just love you guys and your adventures in portugal videos.
