After moving to Porto the advice I give hopefuls now is: DO NOT sell your belongings in your home country unless you have lived in Portugal for a year and know that this is "home". In case things dont work out you wont have to spend extra money starting over. Just pay for storage. DONT believe that Portugal is inexpensive. Some elements may be more affordable that you're used to but there is nothing cheap about living in Portugal....especially where bureaucracy is involved. DO bring portable carbon monoxide and smoke alarms with you. DO utilize your passport timeframe to spend each season in Portugal before taking the leap with both feet. DO realize that a visit, vacation, or sabbatical to Portugal may be all you need to satisfy your wanderlust and that leaving your home base and proximity to friends, family, conveniences, and favorite haunts may not be required.

Hi there, your comment is really an eye opener specifically: 1- "especially where bureaucracy is involved" (is bribery a common thing)? 2- "bring a portable carbon monoxide and smoke alarm with you" (I heard these comments form people moving to Mexico, but Portugal too)? Thanks

I respectfully disagree. We left the U.S. and left behind a small storage shed. A year later we sold everything we left behind and got just enough to pay for the rent it cost to keep. We hardly even remembered what was in the shed. Travel lite guys, it pays off. Life is short and you ain’t taking any of this junk with you!

That is the reason I moved (from the US) to a small vilege close to Tomar.
I get to Lisbon once in a while for a specific reason, in and out. And when I fly somewhere.
I take the train from my house (1;45 min), get off at Oriente, take a 6 minutes cab and I am at the airport.
May be I am just lucky but from my experience is that Portugal is much more efficient than the US. I am from Seattle area.
I am there over 2 years but I am spending about half of my time in the US.
    Absolutely love it!!!!

I love this video, Yulia! I moved to Lisbon 4 years ago in December, and my very first apartment was in Alfama (big mistake :D). I remember the first night, with me using 7 blankets and still freezing, while the garbage collectors yelled around at 1 am. There were SO many things I was not aware of, and even after 4 years, I find myself in situations where I'm just like... what the hell?! Hahah.
I can only agree with the points you mentioned. Lisbon is amazing if you have money/freelance/own business, and if your apartment is not downtown, it needs double-glazed windows, and you need to be extremely patient with basically everything. Sometimes, it's hard to connect with locals when you don't have any touchpoints like work. Also, everything is very dynamic, and it's pretty hard to find (long-term) connections because people come and go; most of them stay for a summer and leave by November. It took me 3 years to create my circle of friends.
On the other side, Lisbon is full of creative people, the expat community is amazing; there are so many different artists, events, and you can find anything on platforms like Meetup. I have learned so much during this time and have gained like 100 more skills now.
I feel Lisbon is ideal for a specific time of your life to enjoy the moment, be present, and see the beauty of the city, but it's probably not your final destination. However, it would be wonderful to meet you one day :) bom fim de semana!

She’s just complaining so much about ppl living their lives (people chatting at the post office, rubbish workers chatting and minding their business while at work). Can’t understand why she’s there if all of that pisses her off so much. Portugal and its people are lovely, you’re just from a country where people are different and found it hard to fit in.

SEF has reported, and verified by two sources, that 50% of expats leave after 2 years and 70% leave after 5 years. This video helps explain some of the reasons why and really drives home the point that people need to do more research and ask more questions. Thanks!

I have my NIF and Portugal bank account, but now being almost 68 yo, I'm slowly coming to the realization that a relocation to Portugal may be a bit overwhelming for me now. I appreciate videos like this as there are hundreds of videos that only talk about the positives, and this is true whether Portugal, Spain, Italy, etc. Thanks!

      I am not surprised.
I think that if a person living overseas goes back home at least once a year, they will be happier staying overseas. Or should I reverse that, spend 8 months back at home and 4 months overseas.
Been out of my country for 5 years on a trip that was supposed to be 6 months, bought an apto too. Just now starting to get totally bored and NEED the interaction I can have back home.
Plan to return for maybe a year to the US to discharge and get what I can't overseas. Then maybe just then, I will go back overseas.
Think of your place overseas as a part time vacation place and HOME your regular life.
NOT to say that some people find joy in doing something overseas and are comfortable with that and stay. You MUST recreate what you loved at home in your new home overseas, OR you are doomed to fail.
Like the old saying - YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY A COW TO GET THE MILK.
YOU can enjoy life overseas WITHOUT buying a place and living there all the time. RENT and leave when you get tired of it.

Good to see someone giving a realistic view of life in Portugal rather than the normal fantasists who think they died and went to heaven. I would give one word of warning to anyone thinking of buying an apartment in either Lisbon or Porto ....... Don't!! You cannot imagine the heap of problems you could be buying into by acquiring a property in a building with joint ownership. Additionally, if you have antisocial neighbours who disrupt your life night and day, the authorities will do absolutely nothing. Far better to just rent....

Great video, obrigado! My wife and I visited Portugal a few years back for a vacation/scouting trip to see if it would be somewhere we would want to move. We rented a car and drove all over Portugal, visited small towns off the beaten path and barely visited any tourist traps (except we had to see Pena Palace and the Initiation Well!). We learned so much about the people because most we encountered did not speak English and our Portuguese is very limited. We are now back and pursuing our visas, but as you said, definitely do your research and focus on finding out what people do not like about anywhere you are considering a move to, it might change your mind before you get there.

It isn't really a problem to fire someone in Portugal. In theory, if you have a long-term contract, it can be a bit harder to fire someone (not nearly as it used to be). Usually the employer will need to give some sort of compensation and the person will have access to unemployment benefits by the state. However, a lot of people don't even have long-term contracts, they may be even working as independent contractors (but are treated as if they have a contract). Yes, there is something called "recibos verdes". It was supposed to be for highly payed independent contractors or for people doing short-term jobs, but doesn't work that way. Also no access to benefits from the State, even though people still have to pay Social Security.
The only ones that seem to be basically impossible to fire are people working in certain areas of the public sector, with long-term contracts (yes, there are also people working with recibos verdes in the public sector) and usually affiliated with one of the big worker Unions.

Thanks for the video. My wife and I will be retiring in about two to three years. We spent 3 weeks in Portugal this past July. A week in Porto, a week in Lisbon and a week in Albufeira. It was a vacation but also a bit of a reconnaissance mission to see if we'd like to do more research about retiring there. We loved being there and will go back for a much longer stay in different parts of the country to see where we'd like to settle, if at all. My wife loved Porto more the Lisbon. I liked all 3 places but would not choose Albufeira as it was a bit too touristy for me. Will try Lagos, Portimao and Tavira next time. I like living near the coast and would like an ocean/sea view from wherever we live or a river view if we're not on the coast. Aveiro and Ericeira also look interesting to me.

Kudos from Boston! Thank you for this very informative and thorough video! I'm half Portuguese, living in US for 35+ years, a lot longer than in my own country prior to immigrating here. Have family in Lisbon whom I visit every year, enjoying the laidback way of living, the social life, the food, all the good stuff... as opposed to my fast paced work-oriented life here, with way less time for social life. So I took early retirement a few years ago planning to relocate to Lisbon, starting with 4-6 months there and the rest of the year here (Winter definitely here! Too cold indoors there :))... I was there for 10 weeks, realizing that the locals cannot afford housing there (cost went up 100-150% in the last 5yrs due to foreigners demand), food n eating out is much cheaper compared to US, but not for their salaries....So yah, I'll continue to visit while waiting/hoping for the housing market to crash now that the infamous Golden Visa program has ended. Great video, Yulia!!

I was just thinking about the cold houses when you mentioned them. Of couse you can overcome this by paying a few hundred euros a month on electricity. Bytheway, AC is the best way to heat up a house here unless you can afford floor heating. Get a dehumidifier too, they work great. Regarding the post office I dont know where you live but I live in a busy suburb and you simply take your number and wait max 15 minutes. I have never seen anyone chat for more than a minute while people are waiting. Regarding the driver's license the best is just to take a whole new one with lessons and exam. It costs about €800 and takes less than 1 year. Finally I will just say that it took me quite a bit more than 2 years to get used to living here but I'm glad. I lived in Canada where I was just not happy. Last word, if someone finds paradise please let me know.

can you please send me the exact minute when I said I don't like Portugal? muito obrigada :) sharing facts and educating others doesn’t mean ”I don’t like Portugal”. it simply means ”here’s what you need to know before moving to this country”

    • @pedrosoaresmendes
      @pedrosoaresmendes 7 місяців тому

Sure. You right. Its not explicit but implicit. Enjoy the good stuff and try to understand why things are as they are and try to change what you can. You can always upgrade your windows, you have to understand that the garbage has to be at night because of the small streets we have and if they would do it at day time will be bad for tourists@@ThisisYulia

I can tell you something. In Lagos there are four different speciality coffee shops selling top quality arabica blends with excellent baristas. I live in Portimao area, not a single one, in Alvor a boutique tourist village, not a single one. If I was opening one it would be in Alvor and I would use black and white cafe Lagos as a blueprint to copy as people literally spill out of that place plus you have to wait often to get a spot. Hope that helps, in general Coffe shops in Portugal are selling cheap Robusta vomit.

      @lxportugal9343 10 місяців тому +1

Don't listen to him unless you want to work just for tourists which in Algarve it's pretty much during summer and what costumers will you have during the rest of the year?
Portuguese people like their "vomit" coffee and the only ones that we see making vomit coffee as good as us are Italians.
But be aware that there are cafés in almost every corner of Portugal.

1.800€ its a luxary for portuguese. Don´t insult us. It´s funny because know, the tourism and all the digital nomads that rize up the prices, are the ones that are saying bad of Portugal.

Im not going to start a discution with you online but, yes, before this discover of how amazing its Portugal to live because of the low taxes we have for foreigners and low cost of living for people that have wages at level of the rich countrys, 1800€ was very high salary for 90% of portuguese and you could live very well on Lisboa as better on Porto. But now its very hard and the problem is that you, tourists and expats, are starting complaining that its also expensive for you. Imagine the poor portuguese that used to live in their native cities and now dont have a choise @@ThisisYulia

basic phrases won't help anyone "navigate their life" in Portugal.
either live as an English speaker with what ever consequences that brings, or prioritize learning Portuguese, which is an absolute b***h of a language, to become part of the community.

Hi Yulia .... nice to see you again
I am a US and Canadian citizen living in Brasil
Agree with you Portugal does suck, too many demands, too much BS
The biggest NEGATIVE for me is the COLD MED waters, could not deal with not being able to spend time in the ocean - MED, in fact I did some research and ALL of the MED waters are COLD by my standards.
Sorry you moved out of Canada
Did you ever think of moving to MALTA ? Easy to get work visa and stay long term
Mexico ? I am researching going there to at least get a Temp Visa. IS SO EASY vs Canada or PT
NO stupid residence requirements and some programs there is NO financial requirement, certainly worth checking out. Mexico has beautiful beaches with warm ocean waters only europeans dream about.
I don't want to live there (as of now) but one day I might want to spend more time there.

Wow, all of these videos I've seen about the cons of moving to Portugal are rediculous. You are going to experince these issues NO MATTER WHERE YOU GO! Life isn't fair honey. Mold? Really? Cold winters?🤣 I think you just need to grow up. Bureaucrats suck all over the planet. How about move to America and try to pay $1400/month for an apartment in a metro area. Even the most dangerous dirty drug ridden cities will be double that for a studio. Make a decent wage and you will be taxed at almost 50%. life is challenging no matter where you go. Just live it without expectations and make the best life you can becuase, here's a little secret, you're going to die some day and none of this will matter so just don your best and don't sweat it.

Hey Beb!! Get a Kelly kettle, it can keep you warm on those cold Portuguese nights. These things will burn anything. Why don't you come back to Canada? The EU will collapse soon an you'll be stranded in a Third World country. I use to go to a Portuguese chicken place, I got sick of going there because as soon as another Portuguese person came in they would have a conversational fiesta. Another thing if you live in Portugal, people don't wear rings in their nose in Portugal. Nice video beb!!
