I am so glad to be a guitar player at the same time that people like Josh, Brian Wampler, Marty Schwartz and Mick and Dan are doing their thing! The absolute golden age of guitar at a time when popular music has completely abandoned the instrument.
yeah.....more of "us" are "all geared up " like never before, but with nowhere to go except the memory hole of inter-nowhere (i.e. a literal technarchic 'utopia" = yup, we're in it right now).
Fuck yeah. I remember back when UA-cam videos were just cool shit like this instead of 30 minute commercials. Love you guys. Thank you for always keeping me inspired to make music. Color box for life
Well that was fun. This vid caused me to dig out my old Daddy O. My son and I then followed your instructions and modded the poor old thing. Converted it from a rather staid, plaid and not particularly pleasant overdrive into a fire breathing hooligan! What a great little mod! Thank you.
Despite being a guitar player with more than 25 years of experience I have not had the experience of trying a lot of pedals. I watched Josh Scott video about the different types of overdrives and I have been on a quest to get one of each kind. My wife gave me an East River Drive as birthday present last Christmas, she rocks! Now Im thinking of getting a Daddy O. Big up JHS you're like my hero and shxt.
This was the first pedal that I modified, and I loved the way it turned out. It was my gateway to me starting my business. Unfortunately I had it in storage and my unit got broken into and a bunch of my collectable pedals got stolen, including this one. This was definitely a walk down memory lane. Thank you Josh.
That was a great episode. I was so comforting to see you just calmly react to the "road blocks" that were thrown at you and you just handle them, your a pro at this and I can definitely keep your level headedness in mind or me when things "just don't go the way I was thinking they should" in the future. Thank you!
So about the 57 minute mark you have now entered into my daily life😜 It's comforting knowing i'm not alone....... btw- fixing the pad was an awesome bonus teaching moment,
When I was getting started with electric guitar, I bought a Keeley Oxblood overdrive which I like to this day. But after several months I noticed the phat toggle switch was becoming intermittent. I contacted Keeley tech support and asked if I should try resoldering the switch to the circuit board before going to the hassle of mailing it to them for repair. I was told to go ahead if I felt comfrtable with doing so. I've been a Extra Class Amateur Radio operator for over 40 years, so yeah, I'm, comfortable with soldering. Sure enough, the toggle switch legs were barely attached to the circuit board. I added a little more solder to the legs and it was back in business. Your struggle with the electrolytic capacitor brought back this memory. Also being 5 hours into a 30 minute project is a familar meme.
I bought a brand new boxed Daddy O when they were first issued, but had to return it after a few days. I lived in East London and the Daddy O was constantly picking up Dutch radio transmissions.
Oh yeah! Short Circuit is back! Im happy to see it. I cant wait to see what we have planned for a circuit to get into! Josh mentioned near the end of the previous series that we would be going through the notorious and revered Fuzz Face and that would be fantastic however I for one would not mind at all if the plans changed, Im just happy to see we are back I cant wait to get breadboarding along with Josh!
“There’s no way in the world this capacitor in a Daddy O shut the power in my home down” goes down as one of those sentences that has never been said before and will never be said again
This was thoroughly entertaining, thank you so much Josh! So many things were great about it. I love that you repaired the pedal and sent it back to Robby. I of course love this pedal (having bought it when it was still pretty much new) and I love learning about it. Glad that you were able to work through the various tuning/power issues and ended up with something you were happy with. I still use my pedal all the time (having modded it a while back with my friend's help). Regarding the price of these on the used market, I agree with Josh in that I don't think they should sell for extreme amounts of money just because of this video. If anything, it's a good reason to investigate other pieces of reasonably priced gear. Don't just stick to what other people have already made famous and potentially expensive.
I love these videos. I have over 50 pedals, and almost all of them I've built myself. Pedal building has to be one of the most rewarding hobbies because at the end of the project, you have a unique and wonderful thing you can love and appreciate forever. I just bought a colorbox during the Ross livestream because I absolutely need at least 1 jhs pedal on my board. Thanks for doing these videos josh.
I find these videos fascinating but then again, I'm not right. Wish there were videos like this in the 80's when I was getting my associates degree in electronics.
The Daddy-O was my first and second OD pedal. The purple echo from the same line was also my first and second echo pedals. It was always the 1/4” jacks that went bad in them for me.
G'day Josh, It's good to see you back in Short Circuit again. I popped into a local pawn broker earlier this year, and found a Daddy-O & an 18v Cool Cat in the music section. In my mind, I know that these pedals are 20+ years old. Twenty years of people stomping on them, turning knobs, beer, cigarette smoke, cat/dog hair, and just general misuse. I know that they're worn out. But, they sound just sooooo sweet. Within a few months, I managed to collect all of the first series Danelectro pedals (except the 9v Cool Cat), and they're all great. All I need to complete the collection is a Danelectro guitar. I have found a 59x12 - it's twice what I want to spend, but it seems to be half the usual price. For future Short Circuit episodes, I'd like to see more pedal mods. I'd prefer to see mods on some of the cheaper pedals, such as DS-1, SD-1, or EH-X pedals. I know I can get them at a reasonable price. Maybe you can alternate between circuit builds & pedal mods. Thanks again for another great video. Andrew
My favorite Dan-O pedal was the 18v Cool Cat chorus. I gigged on it and a Daddy-O for years. I eventually got an overdrive I liked a lot better but I used the Cool cat until it died; it got a distorted fuzzy tail to the notes so I sold it as a project. A shame, because it was the best slow churning Leslie in a pedal I'd heard up to then.
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. Also, I like that you keep rolling when challenges arise. It help me see the troubleshooting techniques and the thought process behind prioritizing the order of things to check.
I wrote to JHS some years ago to ask if you could mod my beloved Daddy O and Dan-Echo, but one of the JHS guys kindly replied you recently dialled back the mod department -luckily for you. So, great to see this now! Thank you for your content, it's precious.
If every day was a perfect day life would be boring and you wouldn't learn anything. The trace repair was great, been there done that. Nothing wrong with note cards. Thanks!!!
1:09:28 for the bass that got skipped. Thanks for the video, I've been meaning to mod my Daddy O. Never done a mod before, other than add a led or switch irritatingly bright leds to reasonable ones, the opposite of what you did. :D
This takes me back to being a kid, guitar shop guy selling me this telling me it will give me the grunge sound. Me getting it home and it sounding like bees in a tin can. Then the depression set in.
The Kirkland sparkling water is the best! oh I had one of these at one point, loved it! Mine is likely the daddy o, but I liked the cool cat chorus also had the echo for a second. Hmm I need to get my Melko echo 616, it sort of stopped working and I just haven't gotten around to having anyone look at it.
Thanks for this! This was actually the first pedal I bought as a teen and was.. kinda disappointed. Found it in a box recently after like 25 years and really appreciate it, but cool to see it can be improved
The Daddio was my first guitar pedal. My first one got destroyed by a flood, but then a few years ago I found another one in a pawn shop for next to nothing.
Heyoh, Josh and JHS! 👋🤓 Just got my black Notaklön! Still haven't assembled my white one, haha! I think I'll give it to a guitar buddy of mine. Thanx for everything; the knowledge and the laughs!
Yep - I really can’t believe I’m watching and enjoying this! I guess that’s what happens when the pedal bug gets you. I have a danelectro chilli dog octaver with a broken / faulty switch. Feels like I should get the back off. Thanks Josh 👍
I had a few big Dano pedals, including this one. They are tanks. I've never modded a pedal, but did build some things in the 80s when I didn't have much money. I must have sent off for some plans (something like Guitar Secrets?). I remember recording on my 4-track cassette using a distortion I made when things started to sound (and smell) funny. I looked over and smoke was coming out of the thing. I bought a few DOD pedals after that. Loved the video and seeing you deal with the various issues. Reminded me of many projects I've worked on.
i still have mine somewhere, from almost 30 years ago.... i learned how to play guitar as a kid with one of these... the entire Nirvana discography on a mexican strat, with this pedal. might have to find it now
The cool cat chorus was a great sounding chorus then and now. They also had one of their super cheap smaller pedals that was yellow and I think it was a tremolo that I really liked. And when I say super cheap, I think I paid $15-$25 for that bad boy brand new that guitar center in 1998 or so.
speaking of fumes, sometimes at work i barely do any welding for a day but when i get home my snot is all black just from people around me welding, extraction and, in the case of welding, fresh air helmet is a must (when i weld all day i'm fine cause of the fresh air helmet)
I'd love to see an episode or 5 on the PT2399. I've seen schematics using this chip for chorus, vibrato, reverb and delay pedals. it's a near universal chip for DIY time-based effects.
Would be a nice if you A/Bd the original pedal to the newly moded one. I'm sure you have multiple pedals of each one in the WORLD! lol. Great mod videos
you should do the pedal kit next. I've built three kits from stewmac, the 1st one was one of yours, the old school fuzz. I later modded it and had NO IDEA what I was doing😄
It's simple opamp gain stage followed by hard clipping diodes, a simple tone stack and then a gain recovery stage. I think the power amplifier chip also overdrives when the amp is cranked and adds to the cool sound
i had loads of Danos in the past - still have a few the Daddy-O. bought one when my original Guvnor started going weird on me. since fixed it by swapping round some of the jacks on the back of the box my favorites are the 18V Cool Cat chorus. its so very good. and the smaller Cool Cat Series Vibe, which i did the mods on i have the Cool Cat series Metal pedal as well. not because its good, because it would not sell during my pedal purge planning to look at modding the Daddy-O next week as I have a week of gardening leave. just need to root through my box of bits to see what components i can upcycle and what i need to buy
Loved your "my favorite mods for a fuzz face" video. Maybe you can show the effect of higher and lower gain transistors for Q1 and Q2. Can you show a mod that makes a fuzz face less sensitive to input impedance without adversely affecting the tone and cleanup with volume rollback on the guitar? I'm guessing that an input buffer with output impedance around a few k ohms would do the trick, but maybe you also need to add some series inductance as well.
I really dont go in for schadenfreude but with the broken cap, possibly trace, chronically out of tune and power outage during episode 13?? I have to admit I had a couple giggles but I was laughing with ya, not at ya! Loved the show and cant wait for more thank you Josh!!
Maybe it's just me, but I think it sounded better with C6 still in before it was replaced with the jumper. It became raunchy in a bad way to my ears. I guess that's another reason to test it after each step; to make sure you like the result of each step. Either way, great video Josh!
Very cool. I have one. It's just sitting around I don't use it for anything so I may give this a go for fun. Then all it will need is a mod so you don't need the world's smallest fingers to operate the knobs and another so you can actually see where the knobs are set when standing 😄 Thanks Josh, as I said I will definitely take a look at this.
You are a very kind man to mod the Daddy O and return it to the sender as a remembrance of his Dad.
That was beautiful and brought a tear to my eye.
I am so glad to be a guitar player at the same time that people like Josh, Brian Wampler, Marty Schwartz and Mick and Dan are doing their thing! The absolute golden age of guitar at a time when popular music has completely abandoned the instrument.
I’m glad to be here now. But I’m glad I got a good 15 years of guitar in before youtube and instagram
yeah.....more of "us" are "all geared up " like never before,
but with nowhere to go except the memory hole of inter-nowhere (i.e. a literal technarchic 'utopia" = yup, we're in it right now).
No music has not abondoned the guitar
Unless you only listen to the radio ..
but since the internet the radio is kinda irrelevant
“Throw away your clipped leads”
“Waste a resistor making a jumper”
😂
Lol. I've gotten into diy pedals and I have a pile of clipped resistor legs which has com in handy in connecting components across a large distance.
Fuck yeah. I remember back when UA-cam videos were just cool shit like this instead of 30 minute commercials. Love you guys. Thank you for always keeping me inspired to make music. Color box for life

Josh, I hope you know you’re a freaking treasure. I’m not crying, you are…
Love the Daddy-O! That’s my Marshall!
Thanks Josh for continuing this series. Really love it.
More to come!
I love watch JHS videos during my breakfest. Thanks Josh, for taking up time that once belonged to Bugs Bunny.
That was a great episode. I was so comforting to see you just calmly react to the "road blocks" that were thrown at you and you just handle them, your a pro at this and I can definitely keep your level headedness in mind or me when things "just don't go the way I was thinking they should" in the future. Thank you!
The dan-echo is like nothing else. I need a new one but I played one exclusively for 20 years. No delay has come close to sounding like me since.
Thanks for leaving the in the trace fix and chaos. Very humble. Makes me feel more confident as a builder, knowing I have had similar issues.
So about the 57 minute mark you have now entered into my daily life😜 It's comforting knowing i'm not alone....... btw- fixing the pad was an awesome bonus teaching moment,
Dear Josh, I relate to your thoughts and emotions about guitar pedals 100% ❤
Love that you left the troubleshooting part of it. It’s the most instructionnal thing of the video!
When I was getting started with electric guitar, I bought a Keeley Oxblood overdrive which I like to this day. But after several months I noticed the phat toggle switch was becoming intermittent. These lives have been awesome! Please keep going, Josh.
My first pedal was the Tuna Melt. Bought it in 2000. Still my favourite term. Still on my board.
I find these videos fascinating but then again, I'm not right. Wish there were videos like this in the 80's when I was getting my associates degree in electronics.
I just started watching this Short Circuit series and knowing that he is continuing doing some more it's really exciting! 🙏🏻
@1:00 this is fantastic. 😂😂😂

Loved this episode… the slip, pit in the stomach everytime
Been waiting so long for this to return!

Replaced the switch on my JHS-modded East River Drive. Felt like a badass.
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. Also, I like that you keep rolling when challenges arise. It help me see the troubleshooting techniques and the thought process behind prioritizing the order of things to check.

When you reached for C9... I couldn't help gasp! A fun episode.
This takes me back to being a kid, guitar shop guy selling me this telling me it will give me the grunge sound. Me getting it home and it sounding like bees in a tin can. Then the depression set in.
I like the Black coffee 😊

....grabs a Strat, adds another "almost done" I don't feel bad for 3 questions, now. Thank you again, Josh. \m/
I'm so glad I caught this video. Thanks for all the real life live fixes.
Thanks for this! This was actually the first pedal I bought as a teen and was.. kinda disappointed. Found it in a box recently after like 25 years and really appreciate it, but cool to see it can be improved
awesome!!! so glad short circuit is back
i did a Monty Allums mod on mine about 10 years back... capacitors, LEDs and diodes across the switch.... quite nice kit
Nice to know someone who's dedicated their entire life to guitar pedals . When you get bitten by the Pedal Bug it's endless .
The Daddio was my first guitar pedal. My first one got destroyed by a flood, but then a few years ago I found another one in a pawn shop for next to nothing.
My favorite Danelectro pedal is the Cool Cat chorus pedal. 🤘🏽
Heyoh, Josh and JHS! 👋🤓

Well now I have something to do on a quiet winter evening.
Thank you JHS for increasing the value of my Daddy O pedal.
I can tell you've never done this before! 😂❤😂
i still have mine somewhere, from almost 30 years ago.... i learned how to play guitar as a kid with one of these... the entire Nirvana discography on a mexican strat, with this pedal. might have to find it now
The daddy-0 and the pastrami I think were my favorite danelectro pedals. In fact the daddy-o is often still on my board
The Tuna Melt Tremolo is fantastic.
I love these videos!
Wooh, another short circuit!
Short Circuit!! Hell yeah!
Hope to see you build the new kit.
Josh, You are important.
Still use this as my only overdrive from mid 2000s, didn't realize it was a cool pedal now..
58:10 my usual pedal building experience
YES we are so backkk
Love it

What is the circuit in the danelectro honeytone pocket amp? The drive from those things (to my ear) is really cool!
It's simple opamp gain stage followed by hard clipping diodes, a simple tone stack and then a gain recovery stage. I think the power amplifier chip also overdrives when the amp is cranked and adds to the cool sound
Thanks for this Josh. Maybe show some love to the Fab Tone and show us some mods for it? Full disclosure, I may or may not have a Fab Tone.
hahahaha
the great prophet.. kelly klarkson XD LMAO dude
1st ever distortion I tried was a fab tone dd1
i had loads of Danos in the past - still have a few
the Daddy-O. bought one when my original Guvnor started going weird on me. since fixed it by swapping round some of the jacks on the back of the box
my favorites are the 18V Cool Cat chorus. its so very good. and the smaller Cool Cat Series Vibe, which i did the mods on
i have the Cool Cat series Metal pedal as well. not because its good, because it would not sell during my pedal purge
planning to look at modding the Daddy-O next week as I have a week of gardening leave. just need to root through my box of bits to see what components i can upcycle and what i need to buy
Loved your "my favorite mods for a fuzz face" video. Maybe you can show the effect of higher and lower gain transistors for Q1 and Q2. Welcome Back to the Bench.
My vote is do a pedal kit as I'm dabbing my feet in doing one for myself.
Blue LED and R17 high brightness is The Way. I had a Badgerplex (EP-3 style preamp pedal) and its blue LED would blind people in other dimensions
I’m 30 minutes into the video and Josh says people who are still watching this we’re all family haha. I also use notecards, we appreciate it
I really dont go in for schadenfreude but with the broken cap, possibly trace, chronically out of tune and power outage during episode 13?? I have to admit I had a couple giggles but I was laughing with ya, not at ya! Loved the show and cant wait for more thank you Josh!!
My first pedal was a Danelectro fab echo I got in the early 2000s. I still have it and the original box.
he has the box
The day I discover this series and watch Episode 1 is the day you make a comeback!
I have waited for you guys to talk about the French Toast
My old favourite overdrive, the Aria pro od-10 has been crapping out, two days ago I put this pedal back on my board.
The change to the clipping was fantastic. Sounds monstrous.
38:59 NEVER a blue LED -- those things burn the insides of my eyeballs with how freakin bright they are.
Maybe it's just me,
but I think it sounded better with C6 still in before it was replaced with the jumper. It became raunchy in a bad way to my ears.
I guess that's another reason to test it after each step; to make sure you like the result of each step.
Either way, great video Josh!
JOSH! How dare you say anything bad about the Fab-tone. 😊
Nice tone ! My question, what's happen if you stack 2 or 3 ? Fuzz overload? Thanks, great video👍🤘🇨🇦
1:01:33 YASSSSSS feel that tho
I'd love to see an episode modding a metal zone with something like the Diezel mod.
Cool cat. Still use it
Very cool.
