      @@thing_under_the_stairs honestly that's one reason why i hope she doesn't get knighted. i hope she's offered a knighthood, but rejects it. for her to accept would be to legitimize the corrupt institution and let it be synonymous with righteousness… to reject it is to affirm a theme of the books: the "ser" before someone's name isn't worth anything. what defines you is your actions.

    Let's not forget that Catelyn made a vow to Brienne: never to ask of her any task that would bring her dishonor. That vow has already been broken, so it's arguable Brienne is no longer bound to her.

    • @bellmel319
      @bellmel319 Місяць тому +14

    Totally agreed on the proposed end point for Brienne. Her knighting was one of the few thematically rich moments in the final season of the show.
    Ser Jaime, one of the last of the traditional line of knights, elevating Brienne to knighthood, then dying, while Ser Brienne helps usher in a new age, would be such a fitting microcosm of everything ASOIAF is about.
    In winter, the old will die, but despite their mistakes and misdeeds, they identify what gives hope for a better tomorrow, the new, and protect it with what is left of their lives. Come spring, the old have died defending the promise of a better tomorrow, while the new help the flowers bloom and melt the snow, for a warmer, brighter future.

    Preston Jacobs' series on Brienne is probably his best and definitely has me convinced that her story leads into the direction of breaking her oath, to kill Stoneheart like how Jaime was forced to kill Aerys II; all the oaths can contradict each other and it's totally Martin's way to show that sticking to your oaths above all else is wrong.

    I always like the Winter is Coming videos. For the next block I would suggest you to the Greyjoy since they have three POVs linked togheter. Daenerys is pretty detached from the other stories, maybe you could put her alongside the Martell block.
    I can see Brienne ending up as Kingsguard like in the series, I hope she can see her father again at least one time.
    One headcanon that I have is that she’ll be the one to kill Petyr Baelish in a trail by combat so a part of Ice can kill Littlefinger in retribution for him to suggest Joffrey to kill Ned.

    Kingsguard Brienne I feel is a punishment for her if it were to be done in the books. It would be confirming all of the trash her septa told her, would see Red Ronnet's words coming true. Yes, you are ugly. No, you will never find a man who wants you, you'll be lucky to be fucked with the lights out, without any love.Yes, the only thing you are good for is fighting. Yes, you are right that your father was left with the strange daughter who will never give him heirs, that it should have been you instead of your brother that died. It would be so *cruel*, Brienne is such a romantic.
    She's the heir to her house, besides, and thinks of her home often, so my biggest hope for her is that she gets to go back home. Preferably with someone who loves her for who she is. Getting that knighting would be cool, but I really, really don't think it's necessary. As you say, she doesn't need it at all, she's already the best knight without it. :, )

    I am a fan of the Golden Wedding (LannisterxFray). I do think the BwB will go on a massacre there, but also that Arya will be present there as a faceless one, also with the same plan as her mother. But when she sees Stoneheart she does recognize it as her mother and gives her a mercy kill. From that point on I think Brienne will take care of her, setting Arya up for her new arc, this also gives Jaime the change to go into another route.

    I know I'm a broken record, but in 7 / 8 of Brienne's POVs, Red Ronnet Connington is mentioned in thought, dialogue, or seen in dreams. His tossing of the rose into Brienne's face, that abandonment and assault on her womanhood, manifests as fears that Jaime will leave her, and I think that will pop up in TWOW. And Brienne is definitely not "over" Ronnet either...he lives rent-free in her head.

As for the Winds of Winter, rest assured that she will be presented with choices that will put her heart in conflict with itself. And, I think she will find the honourable path in that journey.

And this would be a great character growth to her becoming a knight of the seven kingdoms by Jamie's sword

    Terrific video: But George is going to force her to fall in Winds of Winter, pitting her idealism and decency against (1) her love of Jaime, (2) her vows, loyalty, and service to Catelyn Stark, and (3) her own belief in vengeance.
    She’s been primarily motivated by vengeance herself, so how can she deny vengeance to Mother Merciless for the horrific Red Wedding, especially when Jaime also made a vow to Catelyn and fulfilling her own vows to Catelyn save Jaime’s life and allow him to fulfill his vows to Catelyn!
    Breanne is being forced to help Jaime lead the Red Wedding 2.0, while they are essentially both hostages of Stoneheart forcing each other to comply. Jamie will lead the massacre of most of the remaining Lannisters and many if not most of the Freys at Riverrun.
    Let’s also not forget the Jaime and Brienne story began in the dungeons of Riverrun. This is where they were introduced to each other by Lady Stark and sent out to King’s Landing together.

Had she been born within the beauty standards of Westeros (I'm not convinced she's actually ugly as she's treated), I think she would've been a bit more "lady like."
    That being said, I think she might become a beloved, protective big sister to the Stark girls if/when she finds them.

    I agree with the start of the video. Although the books have their dark moments displaying the grim reality of medieval life & of people, the TV show is different n that it’s far more edgy & crass by nature of it wanting to be this stand-out small screen flick that doesn’t play by the rules. The books have far more sweet moments &, perhaps more importantly, regular day to day humanity of people which was still very present in medieval despite what some books/shows will have you think - people weren’t complete savages back, only some people; the same as today. A lot of this is just lost when the books get translated to the small screen & it’s a real shame because it leaves little room for anything but the grit & edge.

    Perhaps Brienne's real quest is in eventually delivering "Oath Keeper" to a time and place where it is re-forged with "Widow's Wail". I would think that would require Jamie ("Widow's Wail is in Kings's Landing... somewhere, not being much of a stretch that Jamie would know where it is, and might take it for some reason). Brienne and Gendry to be together, likely with Jon Snow. It's my belief that "Widow's Wail and "Oath Keeper" re-forged will be "Lightbringer".

    I think the pushback against Martin's complexity and nuanced characters is just as much "popular thing bad actually" as anything else.
    Complexity in characters and storytelling and defined good and evil aren't mutually exclusive and I think it's reductive to say they are. Making an evil character sympathetic isn't muddying the waters as to whether that character is evil, it's making that character feel whole and not just like a superficial villain.

    I think an alternative but equally thematically rich ending for brienne would be to actually remain unknighted. Over and over again we see how corrupt and unjust the knight system is and how - as opposed to their romantic ideals if heroism that Brienne embodies - they are simply tools of violence and war used by the noble houses. So i think it would be beautiful actually if Brienne remained unknighted and thus perhaps unknowledged by the nobility and instead was known as a folk hero to the peasants, who actually come to embrace her even if shes unrecogniced by the system. Why would she need the acknowledgment of a system thats been nothing but cruel to her AND willing to rewards people like Gregor Clegane etc etc. if she can be seen as a heroic figure with out it? It would fit both with her experiences in AFFC but also perhaps be in line with the potential ending the whole series is building towards, where the surviving characters slowly turn away from the feudalistic and opressive system that has kept their world in stasis.

    I think Brienne’s involvement in the second red wedding will be throwing Walder Frey into a well or the river at Riverrun, since it was her ancestor who said that he was surprised that no one had dropped Walder down a well

    I had a thought the other day that maybe well known lifelong lefty GRRM might expedite Winds to somehow soothe himself and his readers in the wake of the 2024 election.
    I don’t know if that’s election cope or Winds cope but either way I was disappointed in myself for thinking it.

    Brienne will kill stoneheart in order to save Jaime, pod and hunt. In doing so she will mirror Jaime’s arc. Just as the two parts of her arc in feast mirrorthe thematic journey of Sansa and Arya, this third journey will mirror Jaime and his journey from dishonourable knight to honourable, which began with his killing of Aerys. Instead brienne began being honourable and by right should become dishonoured by her killing of her liege but won’t become dishonourable by killing stoneheart and in a way it will be redemptive of jaimes story arch in how he never should have gotten flask over his killing of Aery, after all doing so will save innocents. Therefore brienne will be a author deconstruction of the three themes of chivalry, war and honour.

    In my mind i have this fanfic where Jaime or even Brienne asks for a trial by combat to LSH, but a trial of seven like her ancestor. So they team alongside ser thoros, gendry, ser hyle hunt and even podric or ned dayne against Lem and other LSH'men. All in a similar fashion to the Ashford torney. Giving the chance for jaime to knight brienne

    IMO Brienne stands as the clearest example of the inspiration GRRM took from Marvel comics. Her story of constantly getting shit on by life and choosing heroism regardless reminds me a bit of Peter Parker
    PS, at 0:10 the plural of 'opus' is actually 'opera'. 'magnus opus' means 'great work/labor' and operas were works of drama

    Martin did not write his characters so much as being mixes of good and evil but as people conflicted by choices between duty and personal interest. Brienne has a noble character but she, too, has her internal conflicts.

    I think it would play well into the vows and layers of loyalty theme for Brienne to kill Stoneheart in defense of one of the Stark children (probably Sansa). That Stoneheart is so mad with vegence she doesn't recognize or love the daughter who looks most like her, attacks Sansa, and Brienne kills Stoneheart in Sansa's defense.

    Regarding the Tolkien comparison, I've always said the author Martin most closely resembles is Terry Pratchett, although I'm currently speedrunning a theory that he more closely resembles Fritz Leiber, Jack Vance or L. Sprague de Camp.

    • @saraa.4295
      @saraa.4295 Місяць тому

      I don't know the others, but Pratchett...sir Terry really was wittier than george i'd say..
      But then, i never really liked ranking authors. Yes of course they influenced each others, but saying Martin is better or worse than tolkien, for me is like saying Pizza is better chocalate mousse..they are completely different flavors.

    • @josephyoung2593
      @josephyoung2593 Місяць тому

      @@saraa.4295 Rankings and comparisons are only valuable insofar as they reveal something about the author being compared. Pratchett built a career on pointing out knicker-lines; Martin shows you the pants aren't sitting right and invites you to draw conclusions about why.

      @josephyoung2593 nice allegory ;)
      Though i actually think it tells you more about the reader and what he values..
      For me, for example, i notice how both westeros and middle earth have a rich and detailed history that would probably fit so many more stories than one author could ever hope to write..

    Personal theory: I think Stoneheart will send her regards with Jaime to the Freys. Brienne will accompany him there. After that is done, Stoneheart loses purpose and dies. Brienne will then most likely go to Sansa in the Vale if she's been revealed by then. I don't know where Jaime will go if that happens, because he will have removed a major obstacle to Stannis. He'd probably go to Casterly Rock.

    At the End of Winds of Winter, Jon, Sansa and Rikkon are in Winterfell, Arya, Brienne and Jaime know about their attempt to win back Winterfell and are on their way back North. I think Lady Stonehearts final Death will be happening on that Journey, most likely in the last Chapter.

    That comment about Cersei and Jamie swapping as adults made me laugh and think about a new fun crackpot theory:
    They really did swap which is why Cersei was never able to have a true born child of Robert (because she could only impregnate Jamie) and Robert never noticed because he was always drunk when he tried to have sex with her. This is also why she always thinks about what it would be like to be a man because she originally had that opportunity.
    To explain her walk of shame, you could say that Qyburn innovated Westerosi sex reassignment surgery, which funnily feels up his alley.
