actually i wrote a screen play . in it Plymouth/Crysler are thinking lets do a 75th anniversary car. a exec who loves old cars says . lets get back to basics . we need to show some american muscle again.
The exec is we had soemthing with this 1957 Fury. it looks bad ass and . he trails on . leading to soem, cuts . what if we found old furys' and melted them down and use the metal in the new cars. a few scenes where you have old rusted banged up Furys being put on trucks and carted off and a guy at a place talking so this was a Fury. Yep some crazy story it was a killer car but i just think it was a crazy teenager hopped up on drugs . but hey so since this is for one of them new cars give me a discount on one of them new Fury's. The exec hands him a card and says ok when ya buy it have the dealer call me i will take care of it and here is 5k for the block . A old dozer pushes it up a ramp
We go to see Detroit the steel mills firing up. The exec is if this works American steel will becoming booming again enough of this crap fiber glass . he has that make america strong tude . we see the block that was Christine being cut and dropped to be melted . We then see assembly lines as a updated 1957 Fury's being constructed. A guy working on the assem, bly line has teh familiar track Bad to the bone on a smart device playing . a girl walks up so . what color should these be? teh guy is looking at a old catalogue . he says hey there was a color called autumn red used back in the 50's get with ... he is a master mixologist with colors lets make this lot autumn red and that lot midnight black . we see 12 cars in the lot . the girl walks away . You got it . the man has a yes yes we are gonna make ya teh special editions . ya gonna be the baddest mo fo's out there you 12 will take teh world by storm and rip it up out there .
a Montage scene with Bad To The Bone as the cars are painted and A car show
The cars sell great and are all picked up
our main char is a young teen sadly yet a arnie who stylizes himself as a greaser from the 50s . he is kinda out of touch with reality and that makes him a easy target . There is a contest . the hands on a car thing and he last 4 days with no sleep. he is about to fall asleep and lose he mutters to himself . i am gonna beat those assholes with this car. yes darling we are gonna show them who is the real boss wont we . The radio turns on to a 50's song a small shock hits our main char which he sticks to teh car a lil as 3 othere folks get a shock which make them take their hands off the car and our main char wins
He brings it home . he has ok parents but they lose it . thats a gas guzzler its not green . sell that car and get a eco car kinda thing . he says no mom . he says ya know i am sick of ya all trying to make me like you all he says i made enough in my job i can get a place of my own and ya know maybe its time i moved out . we see him gathere soem stuff and packs teh car and drives to a motel for teh night . he falls asleep before checking in in the car and he has a dream a older man says yes you will son . you will show them who is the real boss . Christine and I will help you
The kid gets an apartment moves in and we see him at school . some bullying as he says its ok we are gonna get ya soon enough. a few of teh kids enemies start to mysteriously die.
Soon the kid is kinda seen as a bad ass. rumors abound . one night he is awoken as his car starts up and drives off on its own . he smiles . as he says go get that shitter Christine. He waits outside for his car to come back its on fire he say wow good job my girl . the fire stops . the car was black before but it is now our beloved Christine in her red . he gets ion and says i think our job is done here. a voice says its time to meet the others. he says who , what others . a girls voice says that are 11 other me's out there and we are taking car of teh shitters . Time for you all to meet . he says ok lets go . he heard a old man . just lay back we wil do teh driving kid he smiles as teh set reclines teh windows darken as teh car drives off. ( Keith Gordon could be a ghost and voice of one of teh spirits of teh new Christine )
we cam out as teh car drives down a desert road as we see other cars driving all windows tinted black there drivers all asleep All Autumn Red . leading out to the song The Birthday Massacre Destroyer
This is a fantasy, projecting the vanity
      A quiet delusion, controlling me
It took the best of me
      Dissolving my sanity
      A silent intrusion, destroying me
When night expires across this town,
I'll light a fire to burn it down
The end is here and now
I'll burn it down, I'll light a fire
The end is here and now
Making wishes for me. Causing calamity
      The only solution, abandons me
This is a tragedy. I meet with it gratefully
It's my execution, and you're joining me
When night expires across this town,
I'll light a fire to burn it down
The end is here and now
I'll burn it down, I'll light a fire
The end is here and now
      I'll burn it down
The end is here and now

He's a terrific actor. Check him out in DePalma's "Dressed To Kill," superb. I also admire John Stockwell's work here, and the fact that the film doesn't look MTV 80s, floofy hair and all that stuff. The book was actually set in PA, near where I grew up

@@AAZEDLARC I grew up near there too, and that's why I like the movie more than the book. In the book, it's near Pittsburgh, and all throughout the read, they talk about going home and watching the Phillies, or listening to the Phillies on the radio. As a Pittsburgher, that always gave me a kneejerk reaction, and took me out of the story. NOBODY from that area wants to hear ANYTHING about the Phillies, lol. It's Pirate town! The movie doesn't do that, lol.

I always had the impression that Christine is slowly taking over Arnie and causing his behavior to turn dark. I agree with another comment I saw on here. Christine and Arnie were meant for each other. They were both used, abused, and basically thrown away in the movie version. They met and ultimately rebuilt each other. Both were consumed by jealousy and took out all the s***ers that tried to break them back down. And, yes, this is totally a revenge movie.
Fun Fact: One of the original screen used Christine's is currently on display in Colorado at the Rods and Bods Car Museum in Jefferson County. You can't sit in it, but you can take a picture standing with it.

Sure, the film is creepy yet entertaining and in some ways hilarious, a possessed vehicle, but the book goes much further than a possessed car, that is what is so great about it. It elaborated more on the characters as well as the car rather than just playing something out for show.

Christine and Arnie were both damaged.
As Arnie fixed Christine, the car fixed and protected him...they were soulmates.
Both Arnie and Christine weren't villains in this story...it's more of a tragedy as it reflect bullying, emotional isolation and abuse.
Ultimately, Arnie 'felt' betrayed by everyone, and empathetically, Christine was the only one who understood his pain.
In the final junkyard scene, we see Christine trying to repair itself. If there were ever a sequel, we would find Christine sitting somewhere as we seen it at the beginning of the movie...battered and awaiting it's next lost soul caregiver.
If we were to look at Christine as more of a 'dog' that Arnie nurses back to health, then we would see the parallels.

Don't get me wrong, I do believe that many of them were 'bad' in some way. And even though Arnie 'pushed' his girlfriend and best friend together, in Arnie's eyes/heart, they betrayed him.

Darnell, as gruff and crude as he was, gave Arnie something that only a few had before, and that was trust. I think he truly liked the kid and recognized he was struggling, perhaps seeing something in him that he experienced in growing up that caused him to be the way we see him in the movie. Afterall, he gave him work and trusted Arnie with his own vehicle for running parts. For a lot of people, that's how they are able to show kindness and compassion. one of mintys best reviews!!! i love this movie, as a car guy. imo, christine was arnies freedom from oppression of his parents, bullies, and even dennis. his so called best friend kept him locked down, reminding arnie that he was a nerdy loser, and needed dennis for support. the saddest scene is at the end, as arnie is dying, he reaches out and touches the car one last time. he didnt care about anyone or anything except that beautiful plymouth fury. that car was the only thing in his life that didnt let him down. if a sequel ever happens, i worry that it will be a terrible modern take on this classic film.

actually i wrote a screen play . in it Plymouth/Crysler are thinking lets do a 75th anniversary car. a exec who loves old cars says . lets get back to basics . we need to show some american muscle again.
Time for you all to meet . he says ok lets go . he heard a old man . just lay back we wil do teh driving kid he smiles as teh set reclines teh windows darken as teh car drives off.
we cam out as teh car drives down a desert road as we see other cars driving all windows tinted black there drivers all asleep All Autumn Red . leading out to the song The Birthday Massacre Destroyer
This is a fantasy, projecting the vanity
      A quiet delusion, controlling me
It took the best of me
      Dissolving my sanity
      A silent intrusion, destroying me
When night expires across this town,
I'll light a fire to burn it down
The end is here and now
I'll burn it down, I'll light a fire
The end is here and now
Making wishes for me. Causing calamity
      The only solution, abandons me
This is a tragedy. I meet with it gratefully
It's my execution, and you're joining me
When night expires across this town,
I'll light a fire to burn it down
The end is here and now
I'll burn it down, I'll light a fire

I agree and disagree with your opinion on Dennis. Only because I do think Dennis cared more about him than anyone else did, even in his own way, however, like most friendships, relationships, whatever most are flawed no matter how much you care about someone- Dennis saw things in a certain order/status quo (jock/nerd) and probably felt that once Arnie grew a backbone and confidence he wouldn't need him anymore.
Especially, when Arnie started going out with Leigh, he 'bout lost his damn mind! I don't think he kept him "locked down" no more than anyone else... That said, Christine didn't give a fuck about Arnie! She was evil, she only cared about herself, and she corrupted Arnie. She didn't just give him "love" it all came with a powerful price.

Christine is acctually still her own evil entity to some extent in the book, she does kill out of jealousy while LeBay is alive and does odd things like when the Vetrans hall guys try to play a prank on LeBay by lifting the rear wheels off the ground she still rockets forward as if nothing happened, LeBay and Christine effectively merge on his passing.
George is actually character wise for all intensive purposes Roland LeBay in the movie as in the book he does not appear until Roland's funeral and is a lot nicer, even willing to tell Dennis the full story.
In the book the romance between Dennis and Leigh does happen, alot of the deleted scenes are actually close on to what happens, they come together initially out of fear and end up having a fling (the book ends years later so you find out it didn't last).

Was just going to say this (or something similar). Christine is evil by herself in the book and her evil feeds off of Roland Lebay’s evil. In the book Christine literally reaches out to Arnie and he’s compelled to buy her, Christine sensing another soul that she can corrupt. I love both the movie and the book although they are significantly different. It’s one of my favorite King books.

    • @pokerguvna978

Not to mention the book as I recall it didn't say Roland was POSSESSING Arnie, but more that Christine warped both Roland and Arnie into what it wanted its owner to be. The greaser constantly out to get "the shitters" of this world. Hell, in the movie Arnie even uses the "shitters" phrase like Roland does in the book.

Well, I think you did a pretty good job on your take of whether the cut out scenes helped or hurt. I mostly didn't care for them either. In the opening scene that you covered where all the 58' Furys coming down the assembly line are all identical units of the same colour and same model with the _exception_ of a single random unit amidst them. It's the same model, but a different colour. At first glance, the obvious reason which is to have her _stick out_ from the rest of the Furys on the line, but it was actually to make it even creepier (at least I thought so) In (Real World) 1958, the Plymouth Fury was only available in _one_ colour (buckskin beige)!! Yet, in the film, here comes a lone wolf amougst the pack that is a different colour...Autumn Red. Strangely, Mopar had no "Autumn Red" colour code in 1958! The colour never existed which makes Chrisine even more mysterious!
I do believe Christine "loved" Arnie as much as Arnie loved the car. All you need to understand that is how she reacts when he passes on. Her head-lights fade to black and her last words are in the song "Pledging My Love" she plays thru her eerie greenlit radio (just listen to the lyrics) \m/ Did you know Scott Banjo and Brroke Shields were considered as well?

The fact that (spoilers coming) that Christine slams into can't recall if it was another car or wall and launches Arnie through the windshield killing him makes me believe that this was a demon trying to corrupt a young soul, and during the final confrintation it succeeded and took Arnie. Then proceeded to pursue his friends to kill them too. Afterwards it would continue on to cause more mayham and find another unsuspecting victim to corrupt just as it did with Arnie.

    @meganshaw1949 10 місяців тому +7

From my understanding both in the film and even more so in the novel, the reason why Arnie is (to an extent) nasty to Denis is because Denis is almost the opposite of Arnie. Denis unlike Arnie is sporty, is more attractive, has a higher status of popularity and has a decent relationship with Arnie’s own parents. In other words, Denis is closer to what Arnie desires to be. Denis is almost a 96% percent right turn of Arnie is and how he’s treated. And because of those differences there was a level of jealousy and anger in Arnie too. In the movie it’s more ambiguous as to whether or not Denis is aware of Arnie’s jealousy and anger, but it’s made more clear in the novel Denis knows about how Arnie feels. And as for the reason why Denis hangs-out with Arnie is partly because he feels bad for Arnie and knows that Arnie needs someone to cry to. In addition to that, Arnie is also highly smart and is better than Denis in most academics. However, there might also be a possible third motive for being with Arnie and that’s to make himself look better in comparison which would explain why Denis gets sidetracked when Arnie starts dating Leigh. This possible reason was made clear in the novel, but not as clear in the film. Although if it is true of both, then in neither one is Denis all that good of a friend and it would make him selfish.

Fun fact: the girl who played Leigh has an identical twin sister. To play a prank on the director (on his birthday, I believe) they switched her with her twin during a scene. Prank was on them because somehow he knew it wasn’t her 😂

I always got the vibe from both the book and the movie that Arnie was as much of victim of Christine as the punks she ran over---only in Arnie's case, it was a supernatural seduction rather than the absolute terror of being mowed down by a car with no apparent driver. Indeed, in the last moments of the movie, Arnie himself is killed by Christine in her insatiable rage...and after a few beats, the headlights come back on, the engine revs devilishly, the music starts up out of the radio, and Christine's off again, this time avenging her dead lover in the form of Arnie.
I can't imagine this movie at all with Kevin Bacon. Can't even try. Keith Gordon nailed this part so completely. Just wish I'd seen more of him over the years---feels like he kinda drifted away after this one was done.

Keith Gordon's still around; he just works the other side of the camera. He directed "Mother Night," "The Milagro Beanfield War" and several episodes of "Dexter."

I saw Christine at the drive in with my buddy Tim. We were both John Carpenter fans. We had a great time, but there were a few issues. It was the second of the two movies showing, it was 1984, and we were two 16 year old boys at a drive in together, and the first movie was Prince's "Purple Rain", so every car around us had young couples making out. Being the target of jokes would have been worth it, but luckily we came out unscathed.

Nah, you guys should have made out a bit, it would have been worth it to see the reactions. For example, the scene in "Dude Where's My Car", when Ashton and Seann made out in front of Fabio and the hot model.

Christine is a masterpiece of a movie - thanks to john carpenter. The self-repair scene was perfect, and scared the crap out of me as a kid.

I have been obsessed with this movie ever since it came out. One of my favorite car movies.I read they destroyed like 25 1957 Plymouths making this movie??? (Said it was easier to find 1957s than the actual 1958 Christine portrays...)

so the glass to the stomach. The shop they crash into had glass windows and it makes perfect sense that arnie would land on a pieces of glass from that shop.

    Nice video!
I've read a lot of Stephen King books over the decades and I've noticed that in most of them characters are flawed, even the protagonists. No one is perfect, no one is wholly likeable.
That said, I do like how Carpenter toned that down a bit.

Totally agree with you Minty, I love the theatrical release of this film. The special effects are so awesome in this film. Part of me wishes I didn't know about the sexual references of the transformation with Arnie & the destruction of Christine. Goes to show some things were always meant to be deleted. Because once you know it is hard to delete it from your memory!

I was working at a job where I had to be at work at 2:30 am. However, this was the airport and the crew for the weather bureau had a shift change at 2:00. I had to walk across the parking lot as all these cars were cooling down. Popping, clicking, creakin. If one headlight would have turned on on I would have run the quarter mile to my office exceeding world record times.

Any version of this movie I haven't seen before is a welcome surprise and disappointment. I absolutely love the movie christine. The idea of a car being hunted and killing people, is just an original idea for back in the day when it first came out. And I love Stephen King's inspiration for Christine, when he originally wrote the book.
