Watching this a few years ago. The scene where Selina comes home after the fall. The part where she takes the spray paint to the doll house really got me. In particular the part where she makes a point to spray paint the bed of the doll house black. It's very telling and stunning storytelling through imagery and behavior.
Given how many roles he had in geek culture content I find it a real pity in my opinion Paul Reuben didn't get as much love and respect as was merited. I would be happy to be mistaken.
It's totally a Christmas movie. It's a retelling of the Christmas Carole. Max Shrek is Ebenezer Scrooge. Penguin is the ghost of Christmas past. Batman is the ghost of Christmas present and Catwoman is the ghost of Christmas future.
Between Batman 89 and Batman Returns, I think this is the better movie. Jack Nicholson as Joker was perfect, but I think Devito's Penguin was just as iconic, and Pfeifer 's Catwoman is still the best live action interpretation of the character BY FAR. Also, late 80s, early90s movies like Bettlejuice, Batman Returns, and Addams Family absolutely gave young me a lifelong attraction to goth girls and girls with a darker, more sardonic personality.

I vividly remember how hyped I was for this sequel. Pt 1 came out when I was 9 or 10 and so I was about 12/13 when this was coming out in 92. The notion of it happening in winter cold was a nice change and the posters in movie theaters featured each character close up. Penguin, Bats and Catwoman. It’s hard these days to make people watch these movies. They’re def not as amazing as they were in 1990 - Action and costumes have advanced far. But nostalgia be damned, I’ll never forget these films. Thx for the thorough breakdown.
There are many more nods that could have been added. I think this video could easily be twice as long. The entrance to the Batcave is an iron maiden - a legendary symbol of torture - because, metaphorically, being Batman is a torture for Bruce Wayne. The red triangle is a real-life symbol of anarchism. The statue of Atlas at Gotham Plaza evokes - for me, at least - Ayn Rand's ATLAS SHRUGGED. In that novel, wealthy entrepreneurs are depicted as the true heroes of society. The Shrecks certainly want the people of Gotham to view them in such a light.
Ever noticed the connection between the two instances where youve said 'i dont know why they said it?' Theyre both to do with the films image system of temperature- Catwoman represents Hot (fire, explosions, hell here) whereas Penguin represents Cold (cold blooded, sewers, raw fish). They represent the two sides to Bruces psyche and how differently he has to act to resolve each of them. When Bruce ate the cold fish soup, he was researching Penguin and when he talked to Selina, she said it was going to be a 'hot' time in old town tonight. When Batman finds Penguin hes living in a near igloo yet when hes with Selina, they talk in front of a fire.
I really enjoyed this breakdown and I love this movie. The Grease movie reference was perfect since Michelle was in Grease 2. I wish you had mentioned the infamous kiss Catwoman gives Batman. I remember it being nominated for MTV Video awards for best kiss.
@llayton8466 I'm one of the few that liked Grease 2 better than the first. Her first film role was in The Hollywood Knights, which starred Alexander Knox-himself, Robert Wuhl.
Batman: The Animated Series score during the opening introduction was inspired by Batman Returns. A lot of the musical score from Batman: The Animated Series conducted by the late Shirley Walker were inspired by the first 2 Burton Batman films. David Lea was the lead stunt double for Michael Keaton who helped Keaton in preparation for the role of Batman. Keaton said he had to learn kickboxing for the role. David Lea also went on to appear in Family Matters fighting Steve Urkel as Bruce Lee with the late Jason David Frank appearing as another goon who was the Green, White, Zeo Ranger V, Turbo and Dino Thunder ranger. One of the episodes in Batman: The Animated Series "The Mechanic" with The Penguin hijacking the Batmobile was because of Batman Returns where you see The Penguin hijacking Batman's batmobile for his own amusement. The last conversation I had with David Lea was via email.
So interesting how the designs of both the Penguin and Catwoman were directly tied to this. It makes me wonder how early into development Bruce Timm and company received those demands
@@avace917 What's interesting is if you look closely at the design of Catwoman for season 4 The New Batman Adventures it matches to Batman Returns live action Catwoman.
With every amazing breakdown, We’re growing closer and closer to bat nips and the Batman credit card…. Never leave the cave without it! This movie brings back so many memories, Do u remember those trading cards for Batman during the 90s? It was tied to the comics and the show but this reminds me of when I was a kid, my dad and I would collect those Batman cards until he passed. Still got em to this day. Another killer breakdown brother keep em coming!!! 🤘🔥
I'll never forget riding our boards down to the Inner Harbor in Baltimore from the neighborhood I grew up in to go see Batman 89. It was me and my good friend Joe. It was opening day that Thursday and we skipped school to see the 12pm showing. This was better then going to see RoboCop. When the Batwing flies up into the moon was insane, everyone was standing up and cheering and clapping cause it was just brilliant, such a great scene. That movie was frickin awesome at the time of its arrival. On the verge on losing our childhood as a early teen, the awesome 80's were on their way out and everything in the world was changing dramatically for a city kid like me. Those were great times with friends and family it seems like a thousand years ago back then. Maybe when I die I can go back and live the 80's for eternity. LoudLove
The PR woman was played by Jan Hooks who was suposed to have a scene in the 1st batman as one of the models killed by the joker but the scene was cut however she does appear in the photo during the news cast
Mate, thank you again for all your hard work. Always love your breakdowns . Quite a lot of people are quite clinical with reviews but your love for the movies and comics always comes through! I'd love to have a pint and talk movies with you any day!
It’s a shame that Tim Burton and Michael Keaton never got to do their trilogy. I still believe they should be allowed to do it Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman Keaton as Batman, and Billy Dee Williams has two face and Jim Carrey is the Riddler under the direction of Tim Burton?
One of my earliest memories involves this movie. We were visiting my great grandmother in a nursing home, and someone bought me Batman Returns trading cards.
I hate to correct you. There were plenty of cds around at the time. There was a limited collectors release of the Prince album on cd that came in a very cool metal tin.
I love absolutely everything about Batman Returns. The pitch-black humor, the Christmas setting, the cast, the action, the pacing... My mom had zero interest in sitting through a comic book movie, but this one left her breathless with laughter ("Shit, I picked a cute one" and "Does this mean we have to start fighting now? " made us both explode into giggles every time). Maybe that's a bad metric to gauge a Batman movie, but it's not as though we were mocking it; the script simply managed to navigate between brooding and violent and quirky and unhinged.
Returns is my absolute favorite Batman movie. DeVito's Penguin is still the one I think of first, the cinematography was phenomenal, it had this grim fairy tale vibe that no other Batman movie had. Loved it.
Perfect timing, I just rewatched it the other day in preparation for your breakdown. Hope you cover the animated series at some point as it really is an important part of Batman media.

Great job mate! You really pointed out a lot of stuff I had never noticed. I think I had always looked at the Burton movies as being kind of fluffy, but there is actually more there than I realized.
The greatest quote in Batman Returns is one that I use whenever someone calls me *weird*. "You're just jealous! Because I am a *genuine* freak! And you have to wear a *MASK*!

Don't blame Burton for supposedly hiding under a desk. If I refused a meeting with someone, and they jumped in a private jet with a PR firm to bully me into hiring them for a role I didn't want them in....
This was my fave Batman film when I was a kid growing up. Even at 5 yrs old in the 90s, I gravitated towards the dark, macabre, gothic themes. I saw how dark the Dark Knight and its lore was. Such mature subject matter and thematic storytelling. Name a character that its rogues/villain gallery is just as popular and universally known as the character himself…..go ahead and, I’ll wait….i see batsy as active nihilism (like myself) whereas i see Superman as hopeless Optimism. Different sides of the same kind.
Paul’s so gracious. One and half million subs and he still takes time to thank me for clicking on his video. Of course I’m clicking the video!! If Paul reviewed an Andrex commercial I’d bloody watch it. Do it, Paul. There’s got to be some lore going on with that puppy.
@31:46 The actor also appears in an Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode where Mac and Dennis moves in the suburbs, and he would always make a comment about the weather to Dennis.
I was 10 years old when I saw Batman Returns in theaters. That line was super long but we managed to get in. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. A few days before we went to the theater, I remember watching the behind the scenes clip on television of Cat-woman using her whip to take the heads off the mannequins. I was super hyped after that. lmao
Thanks for this Paul, another brilliant breakdown. I loved this Batman film. I had it on VHS and consider it one of the best. So glad Burton was given full control over this and sometimes wonder what the third film would have been like had he had made it. I'm still confused about the happy meals though; wasn't this film a 15?
I watched this on VHS at my grandad's as a kid several times. Great film, Michael Keaton Danny DeVito, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, plus Michael Gough as Alfred, all good . Plus me & my sister had Batman and The Joker action figures.
You’ve outdone yourself with this one, even better than the 89 ep. Your breakdowns illustrate so much of the hidden care, thought and allegory imbued into “comic book movies.” Shakespeare was for the masses
Champion, thanks for all the hard work and breakdowns. You've covered a lot of films I enjoy. Appreciate your ongoing hard work. Detail is spot on. Bonus points for the Warner Brother fake-out. Psych!
Question... When talking about how Selena Kyle became cat woman, did you possibly get that explanation about Bastet from Batman Beyond with Kevin Smith and Mark Bernardan? It's when they did their commentary of Batman Returns. In that commentary, Mark seemingly at random(at least it seemed random) brought up the Bastet story too for how she got her cat powers I guess.
The soundtrack, the settings, the constant snow, the vivid personalities, the perpetual darkness and Pfeifer's pink apartment oh that pink apartment. This movie creates an atmosphere you could reach out and touch and oh how I would love to live in that version of Gotham.
Not sure if you have broken it down but would love to see a break down of whiplash just finished watching it and jk is a beast in that ......can't wait for the bond breakdowns
This is a close second to The Dark Knight as my favorite Batman movie... I guess sequals can be great after all! The ballroom scene... sooo good, I think about that scene from time to time and have to rewatch the clip on youtube.
I was 11 when returns came out. I remember thinking what a messed up movie, but i love it! I watched both movies (on vhs) over and over again. We didnt have cable, and only got one channel. So all we had was movies, and NES.
Awesome flick and to this day, the eye shadow scene really got me wondering where did it go when Batman unmasked in front of Catwoman. Also Sean Young back in 1992 was crazy and glad she didn't play Catwoman
The sequence where Batman escapes through a small opening after he turns the Batmobile into a thin "car" was done with a full size "vehicle". It's currently sitting in the Dezerland Auto Museum in Orlando Florida. It's part of the room the call "The Batcave"
I remember the cartoon "Tiny Toons Adventures" made fun of Sean Young pestering Tim Burton to let her play Catwoman. Also, I always assumed it was the toxic contaminated water, and broken glass (cutting him allowing the water to further infect him) that killed him. One of my favorite moments/lines in the movie is when Penguin tells Batman, "You're just jealous, because I'm a genuine freak! While you have to wear a mask!" Batman's response was, "You might be right." Also, the Batman Returns 90s comic book adaptation changed some things, like Batman doesn't "defeat" that one bad guy with dynamite, and instead just tosses the dynamite into the sewer.
Speaking for all the bald subscribers, it's ok that your hair is messed up. At least you have hair 😥. Love these classic breakdowns. Cheers to you and MT.
14:14 The penguin, Man or Myth is a Moses’s reference In the Ten Commandments (1956) Ramses was tasked with finding the Deliverer, if he was a myth he would bring him in a bottle, if he was a Man he was to bring him in chains
I always wondered in the scene where Selena meets Bruce she mentions this guy embarrassed her when she was younger, and remarked "he's dead now". Is she talking about the mugger in the previous scene when she "saves" the woman? I always thought why say that line if there wasn't something to it.

As a kid we didnt have a car walked 3miles in the snow to go see this. This movie is quite the memory for me.
Paul’s so gracious. One and half million subs and he still takes time to thank me for clicking on his video. Of course I’m clicking the video!! If Paul reviewed an Andrex commercial I’d bloody watch it.
Do it, Paul. There’s got to be some lore going on with that puppy.
Best Batman movie. I'll never change my mind.
Ahhhhh Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman…. Made my question my sexuality at nine years old😍😍🤩🤩
Nothing wrong with your sexuality. Hot is hot. And that is just about as hot as it gets.
Even if you're straight as an arrow, Catwoman is perfection.
Lol i love how Austin Powers handles the countdowns. Oh and how Penguin's duck sounds like a muscle car!
Still my favorite Batman and Batman movie!
I was super hyped after that. lmao
I literally grew up the same way!! watched this movie countless times.
A greatly superior movie than Batman 1989! This was a great video, informative, interesting and fun!
Another little reference: the iron torture chamber in Bruce’s house is the same one they had later in Sleepy Hollow.
Nice!
Had one of the greatest teaser posters of all time. So simple yet so effective.
The penguins layer is gotta be the most coolest thing in movie history. The caustics going all crazy over the walls and stuff, just so perfect.
@19:57 - It's adult Lock approaching the Toy Store while, interestingly, Elfmans score 🎼 is "Making Christmas" from Nightmare Before Christmas
You’ve outdone yourself with this one, even better than the 89 ep. Your breakdowns illustrate so much of the hidden care, thought and allegory imbued into “comic book movies.” Shakespeare was for the masses
Ey thank you bro 👊
A full Kevin Conroy tribute breakdown would be awesome. What an amazing Batman. “I am vengeance. I am the night. I am Batman!”
Champion, thanks for all the hard work and breakdowns. You've covered a lot of films I enjoy. Appreciate your ongoing hard work. Detail is spot on. Bonus points for the Warner Brother fake-out. Psych!
Thanks, Paul! I feel so much yummier!
Great film totally agree everything about Batman returns great penguin to Catwoman magnificent to be honest
I enjoy your enthusiasm
& appreciation for a film that left a mark somewhere deep in the psyche
8:42 Isn't that the same doctor who fixed Jokers face?
Penguin's parents are reacting 100 times worse than Mia Farrow in Rosemary's baby 😂
Just a thought but could you please look at Pans Labyrinth. I think a breakdown by you and the crew would be exceptional.
43:04 I hope that meeting was exactly like that 😅🤣🤣🤣
Batman Returns is my favorite Christmas movie 😅
The soundtrack, the settings, the constant snow, the vivid personalities, the perpetual darkness and Pfeifer's pink apartment oh that pink apartment. This movie creates an atmosphere you could reach out and touch and oh how I would love to live in that version of Gotham.
Great vid bud.
35:57 😂 I still have those Batman Returns Happy Meal Toys.
Not sure if you have broken it down but would love to see a break down of whiplash just finished watching it and jk is a beast in that ......can't wait for the bond breakdowns
Let’s goooo Paulie this movie was scary as a kid
Ngl the Amazon batman series gave me the bat bug I juss finished 2 of the arkham games and diving into batman lore and then you dropped this
I think the Red Triangle gang member with the sled was a nod to Rosebud in Citizen Kane, one of Burtons faves.
"Desiree" (sp?) also sounds like Making Christmas, another banger from Elfman
This is a close second to The Dark Knight as my favorite Batman movie... I guess sequals can be great after all! The ballroom scene... sooo good, I think about that scene from time to time and have to rewatch the clip on youtube.
I was 11 when returns came out. I remember thinking what a messed up movie, but i love it! I watched both movies (on vhs) over and over again. We didnt have cable, and only got one channel. So all we had was movies, and NES.
The Jordan 6 is my favorite, and this is probably my favorite batman movie. win-win
Are you gonna do all Batman movies? Can you do the animated ones as well like Under the Red Hood and Mask of the Phantasm?
I was about 5 yrs old myself when I first saw this I believe, won't lie, loved it and still do to this day
Awesome flick and to this day, the eye shadow scene really got me wondering where did it go when Batman unmasked in front of Catwoman. Also Sean Young back in 1992 was crazy and glad she didn't play Catwoman
That quick jim carry bill finger bit tho😂😂
My favourite comic book movie ever, and one of my top 10 all films. I love Danny Devito as the penguin!
The sequence where Batman escapes through a small opening after he turns the Batmobile into a thin "car" was done with a full size "vehicle". It's currently sitting in the Dezerland Auto Museum in Orlando Florida. It's part of the room the call "The Batcave"
7:15 no, you don't have Max Shrek. You have Christopher Walken playing himself😂
33:54 Is that "Bull Hurley" from "Over the Top"?
Cool video mate!
While you have to wear a mask!"
Batman's response was, "You might be right."
Also, the Batman Returns 90s comic book adaptation changed some things, like Batman doesn't "defeat" that one bad guy with dynamite, and instead just tosses the dynamite into the sewer.
Everytime I watch the penguin death scene it makes me cry.
Speaking for all the bald subscribers, it's ok that your hair is messed up. At least you have hair 😥. Love these classic breakdowns. Cheers to you and MT.
14:14 The penguin, Man or Myth is a Moses’s reference
In the Ten Commandments (1956) Ramses was tasked with finding the Deliverer, if he was a myth he would bring him in a bottle, if he was a Man he was to bring him in chains
I always wondered in the scene where Selena meets Bruce she mentions this guy embarrassed her when she was younger, and remarked "he's dead now". Is she talking about the mugger in the previous scene when she "saves" the woman? I always thought why say that line if there wasn't something to it.
