    I'm currently in pain due to unconsciously clenching my teeth when sleeping... I've got headaches, my ears and jaw hurt when I swallow

      That sounds awful Stephy, I hope you are able to get some relief soon. Sometimes conservative, easy treatments and remedies like those in this video can be helpful, but unfortunately, there is a point at which you will need to have a professional look at the situation and help you with treatment. I think having a chat with a dentist or pain specialist would be a wise next step to get you some relief.
      Best of luck on your journey
      Dr Rick

    Hi. When you say irreversible, are you saying that there is a point the muscles can get to where the tension is irreversible?

    • @RickIskandar
      @RickIskandar 3 роки тому +2

      Hey Allara, when I say "irreversible" I mean there is a point of tension buildup beyond which no amount of home remedy or conservative treatment that will improve the situation, and professional intervention like physiotherapy or muscle relaxant injections will be required. In treating patients with this type of pain, there is a distinct point at which the muscle tension becomes a vicious cycle, especially if there are other factors that are causing the patient stress in their environment, where the tension itself, and pain from the tension makes more tension. At this point it is best to see a professional to "free up space", then maintain the lessened tension yourself with these treatments.

    I clench my teeth when I sleep and my dentist made a customized mouth guard for me. My jaw clicks when I open it and has done for 3 years. Will I ever be able to go back to no clicking? Thank you.

      I forgot to say that I know the clenching is caused by stress and nightmares. Thank you.

    • @TailoredTeeth
      @TailoredTeeth  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Bethany, thanks for the info. Clicking is usually caused by some form of dysfunction of the jaw joint. The purpose of the mouthguard that your dentist has given you is to reduce the stress on the joint that has caused the dysfunction and clicking. There is a chance that the clicking will stop with consistent use of the mouthguard, however, sadly, this is not guaranteed. Please talk to your dentist about the clicking and if there is any further treatment that is suitable for you if it continues to bother you.

    Is it better to use soft splint or hard splint for bruxism ?

    • @TailoredTeeth
      @TailoredTeeth  2 роки тому

      Hello Your Royal Highness! Great question! Especially while sleeping, a hard splint is better because soft splints can encourage more uncontrolled muscle movement from chewing on the splint, which can exacerbate muscle hypertrophy and tension. Hope that helps!

      I used a soft one at first and it did mess up my muscles more, but the hard one ortho made me and cost 800 bucks back in 2013 cracked my bottom molar and had to have 600 buck cap put on. I have used very thin ones you get online and mkae impression and send in and they make you one. but they don't last long. Doc has me on gabapectin with my ambian and doing neck and jaw stretches at night keeps me from problems at night but day time is when I clench. I chew half piece of buble gum and use it to hold between my molars when doing strenous yard work. But I have had botox which helped years ago but I had over 1300 bucks into it and dentist who did left practice and where he went did not do it? So hard to find dentist now to even do it if I had thousands of dollars to do it.

    Have had night clenching with night guards with related migraines since 1988; had loud clicking sounds then with eating. Earlier had had locked jaw after wisdom teeth removal in 1973 and tonsillectomy in 1987. Always sore from dental exams from opening mouth wide for too long. Have worn many OTC night guards as well as two dentist made night guards through the years. Preferred softer OTC guards over custom made ones that were harder and caused more face and tooth pain. Have cracked nearly all molars and had them all crowned; have had four crowns re-crowned due to cracking the crowns while sleeping (with guard). Dentist told me I microfracture my teeth before the actual cracks appear. No dentist ever let me know there might be any other treatment other than crowns and re-crowns.
    A few weeks ago I saw a video on UA-cam saying there was treatment for this from oral surgeons and I was able to see one within a couple of days who told me he could decrease or stop my night clenching with Botox shots in my masseter muscles! Expensive, but not as expensive or unpleasant as new crowns, the mouth open procedure always hurts my face for days after. What is your opinion on facial Botox? Thank you...

      Hi there,
      Sounds like you've been through the ringer with your bruxism. I think that in certain situations, such as yours, where there have been other conservative methods attempted for the management of the condition and they have not been completely successful, Botox is a really useful tool to get some relief from the constant destructive pattern of advanced bruxism. As with anything, make sure your treating healthcare professional is experienced and knowledgeable in the treatment to be provided and you understand all the risks and benefits of the procedure.
      Best of luck!

      Hi there!
      I'm not 100% sure what you mean by the teeth shivers, but the absolute best thing you can do is to see a dentist asap so they can take a look and give you a diagnosis of the problem and recommend a solution for you.
      All the best!
