    Flat sandals should be a new testing basics!!! I find it so hard to find good quality flat sandals, they all seem to have super cheap, thin soles and last two seconds. Your opinions would be so helpful in finding the perfect pair

    Handwash with a bit of vinegar!! Google the instructions, I have done it many times and it gives the silk a lovely sheen and looks even better than when I bought it!! xo

      Hi lizzy, this would have been my tip for the washing as well. I would add some useful info: buy laundry detergant that ist ONLY for silk (no wool and silk combo as the materials have different needs). Wash cold in the sink and rinse with cold water and white vine vinegar (it does not smell). Roll the shirt in a towel to soak up the water carefully then hang the shirt on a hanger. If you want to iron the shirt ist would ne best to do it when it is still a bit moist. But I often get away without ironing. I did this with the and other stories shirts several times and it always worked. Love your channel and blog. kathi

      Nope!! You can also put your silk in the freezer after you wash it, sounds weird but works trust me!!

    I love silk shirts and have lots of them. You really don't need to dry clean them, especially if they are a solid colour. I wash mine in the washing machine on a hand wash or delicate cycle in a delicates bag, hang to dry and then iron on the reverse. You can also extend the time between dry cleaning expensive patterned silk shirts by putting them in the freezer to kill bacteria- put them in a ziplock bag and freeze for a day then wear them again. My favourite silk shirts are old uniqlo ones, but they don't sell them anymore after that it's Equivalent slim signature because of the boob/button placement issue.

    I'd love to see a testing basics on espadrilles!! Especially now that we're coming into spring/summer. I think both wedge and flat styles would work but maybe only include wrap around ankle styles not slip ons. There are so many popular brands are out there like castaner, sezane, soludos etc. Plus I'd love to see how you would style them.

    There is a high end boutique near where I live. The owner told me that she always washes silk at 30 degrees hand wash, and it has never been a problem for her. And so I tried it and she is right. Also, I have a very expensive silk pillow (for my wrinkles dontcha know!) and I always hand wash that. But I have been told never to use fabric conditioner. For me, a cotton shirt does not have the drape or feel of a silk shirt. Cotton is great, but silk is special. As always, great video.

    Hand wash it. Google the procedure. If you own a clothing steamer, it's easier.
    I have 6 silk shirts that i have been wearing for years. I hand wash them all. From my experience, this is how I rate the quality:
    Celine > Cuyana > Equipment > Theory > Everlane.
    I dont support fast fashion, so havent tried out some of the brands you featured.

    • @eleo_b
      @eleo_b 7 років тому +2

      To Universe With Love --Oh yes, I have a great one from Theory too! I also like Filippa K for silk shirts. I have been dry cleaning them all, but I think I will try hand washing now. I'll start with one I don't like that much anymore ;) I think it's often just manufacturers that want to avoid complaints and wanting to be on the safe side with their instructions.

      I love equipment, but the sizing is very tricky. I like my shirts oversized and their shirts always look on the tight/smaller range on the models! I will check out Cuyana and celine:)

    • @archanapaladugu368
      @archanapaladugu368 7 років тому +2

      I use the Laundress delicates detergent for my silks and bras. Recently switched to an olive oil soap and they wash rather well.
      I have used the washing machine with the shirt in a pillow case + delicates bag on weeks when I couldnt handwash. They can take the once in a while machine treatment I think.

    • @archanapaladugu368
      @archanapaladugu368 7 років тому +3

      Cuyana and Celine use 32mm silk. Its sturdy and lasts ages.My celine is second hand ( its exorbitantly expensive in store) and in my opinion, is well worth it.

    Great vid as always Lizzy :) For those who are interested.... you CAN and SHOULD wash silk rather than dry clean. Silk is a natural fiber like cotton or linen. It can be hand washed and ironed. This will re-plump the fibers and give the silk a beautiful shine. Dry cleaning by contrast uses chemicals which break down the material over time and also rob the silk of it's natural sheen. There a ton of how to vids online showing you just how to do it :)

    hi hi ! looks the aside from the JCrew all the other shirts are silk crepes. JCrew is a satin silk - it's just the way the yarns are woven - not much to do with the quality of the yarns :) feel like the & other stories / equipment shirt might also be sand washed silk - which is a satin weave that's just been treated to feel a little more sueded (usually tends to be heavier as well)

    Great video as always :) i would really appreciate a testing basics on sunglasses. I never know whether to spend more money on a highend one, or to just stick with the highstreet ones, since they are mostly just as good looking. Writing this i realise, that there's propably not enough to say about sunglasses to film a whole video about them, haha - but would still like to know what your opinion on that topic is :)

    I've never bothered to dry clean or hand wash any of my silk shirts and I've tried a lot. they probably don't last as long as they would if I dry cleaned them but they still last at least 5 years. that includes shirts from uniqlo, mango, Ted Baker and other stories and topshop. they can feel a little crunchy after washing (on a cold delicate and very short cycle with washing up liquid not detergent) but feel soft again after a quick iron with a lot of steam.

    Hi Lizzie! Thank you for this one. Generally speaking, your tasting basics show that we can be dressed elegantly with nice fabrics and cuts without breaking the bank. The most expensive items must feel luxurious without a doubt, but the price difference certainly pays the image of the brand for a huge part... As for silk, I put it on a gentle cycle in the machine (with detergent for silk) then iron it on very low temperature. I don't have issues with that. I don't think dry cleaning is so much better (it cleans without water but only chemicals)... For future ideas, I know it will sound strange, but why not socks? :) xx

  • @molliesoldtheworld

    I agree with you, anything that is going to be a pain in the arse to wash or has to be dry cleaned is not worth buying for me because I'd never bother wearing it. Silk shirts look lovely, but I know I am too lazy/cheap to bother with them! Also, not related, but that realisation dress looks incredible on you!

      I hear this a lot but a huge percentage of my wardrobe is silk. I just do a very quick cold hand wash (1-2 mins) in liquid soap flakes. Rinse with vinegar and water (vinegar removes stains and excess soap) and then hang in bath to dry or towel roll dry. Takes no time at all and comes out lovely and lustrous looking, doesn't even need ironing. I understand though that even quick hand washes might be a bit high maintenance for some as machine washing and tumble drying is just so normal.

    Also loved the idea about the espadrille sandals. Don't think that the wrap-around ankle is a necessity though, it limits the wear too much so I'd go for any type of espadrille I think. Plus the Loewe suede ones are the top ones on my wish list right now..! For high end though Chloe always have nice ones and Aquazzura as well. The high street is also amazing though!!

    If you want to soften it, hold at one end and hit against a softish surface (a cushion) silk is actually fairly tough when it is dry. Most silk can be washed, use a silk or wool detergent or shampoo no more than 30c, rinse well. Vinegar is supposed to soften silk but no too keen on using it, Dry-cleaning can actually ruin the silk, silk has been around a lot longer than dry cleaning, the chemicals can make the silk hard, gentle washing is better. I usually put mine on a machine silk wash, 30c with an extra rinse and the fastest spin 1400rpm, line dry, flat drying not necessary, don't usually iron as this can also ruin the silk.

    Hey Lizzy! Just something to think about... silk shirts aren't meant to be dry cleaned after every wear unless you physically get them dirty or sweat stained. All you have to do is put it in the freezer to deodorize it and freshen it up and you will get way more wear out of your silks if you do this! Hope this helps xoxo

    Good review! I kinda love that JCrew blouse and I think the details and fabric make it worth the price. I avoid most button downs due to large chest but it's nice to know that the lapels help. I tend to look for tunic style silk shirts rather than button downs. I also wash all my silks like others here.

    I really liked the J Crew blouse. So much, I tried to buy, but it was sold out in my size! :(
    I was impressed by the lack of gaping in the front. I'm rather generous in the boobage as well, plus broad shouldered. Collared shirts look great on, but it's hard to find one that doesn't gape. Spending more seems to be required for that not to happen as much.

    I have an Acne one and wash it all the time, and it still looks pretty good and doesn't go crunchy or anything... It is pretty expensive fill price, but you i'm pretty sure u can find them on something like vestiaire or even thrift shops (i thrifted mine )

    I never, never dry clean any silk blouses. Even my Equipment blouses. I just hand wash and hang them to dry. The higher quality silk, I never have to iron or steam. I just stretch and smooth on a hanger and they dry beautifully.

    Thanks for another amazing video! I can't believe Equipment is so expensive now, I bought two of them about 5 years ago for half that price I swear (or I was just more spendy as a uni student hmmm...)
    I wish we had and other stories in Australia :(
    I would love to see a trench coat testing basics...I don't think you've done one yet? Although I see you prefer more structured styles to your wardrobe so perhaps you wouldn't be so keen
    Also I love your facial expression when you comment on the guy revving his engine!! Hehe xx

    I own quite a few silk shirts and I just handwash them with silk laundry liquid. They all still look great! You don't have to dry clean them of you handwash them right

    You can definitely hand wash the equipment one. Their material is more resilient to wear and tear and the crepe fiber handles washing better

    Hi Lizzy. I have a silk shirt from &otherstories and I have machine washed them. I haven't noticed any change to the shirt so far, but maybe it will affect its durability long term.
    Absolutely love you channel! I wondered if you could do a video about how you decide which shoes to wear with an outfit or styling certain types of shoes. It's the main thing I struggle with once I put my boots away for warmer months!

    Hi Lizzy, I am pretty sure the EU 38 is a size UK10, and then the EU 40 would be a size UK 12. I would say the Massimo Dutti is then a 12 and the &other stories is a 10, not the other way around. :)

      @nathimaus 7 років тому +2

      could please tell me where are the cami from the beginning and the top youre wearing at the end from please?? ;D

    • @eleo_b
      @eleo_b 7 років тому +2

      Nathi F --It depends on the country of the brand. &Other stories is Scandinavian and therefore their 38 is larger than a French or Spanish size and the Italian 38 is even smaller, that would equal a 34 in Massimo Dutti. www.asknumbers.com/ClothingWomensConversion.aspx

    • @eleo_b
      @eleo_b 7 років тому +1

      That's why brands usually put all sizes in the label, like Lizzy put on screen. But rule of thumb is that the more suth you go, the smaller the sizing wil be.

    • @nathimaus
      @nathimaus 7 років тому

      that makes sense and I have also noticed that about italian/spanish brands. however in many cases they put also the italian size for example in the label. I know for example that the german sizing is also a bit different than the european... of course depending on the brand and where it comes from the cut and fit might be different, but I meant that the european size should be a reference, so that we dont have to think about the million different sizes (italian, french, german, etc).. :) for me at least when I see EU 40 I immediately think of a UK 12.

    • @eleo_b
      @eleo_b 7 років тому

      Yes, that's UK12=40 is French EU sizes, it's how ASOS often translates sizes. But the sizes Lizzy put on screen for &Other Stories are correct, it's what's actually written in the label and on the website. It's because &Other Stories is super big, that's why it's a 12.

    I do not like equipment silk or cashmere. The quality is not that great. The only reason I'm ever tempted to get them is because they have cute patterns. In my opinion they're only worth buying on sale. Another great video Lizzy! Best series on youtube anywhere ever!

    I am enjoying these basics videos...however, as you continue to do these videos, I think you should mention the materials in each item mentioned. Materials make a huge difference in the quality, especially how the item will perform when worn and washed. 🤗
