@WolfOverdrive He just pushes the E string down behind the nut, pulls down on the E string with his fretting hand and releases it slowly, so it's no actually going lower than E, it's just starting at a higher pitch and unbending back down to E. :)
@richiepowa so... you have to remember, there's 2 LTD vipers. one with a gibson P94 and another that had a SD Alnico Pro II that i replaced with an SD Phat Staple which is a P90 style pickup that is retrofit for a humbucker cavity and ringmount. This also applies to the Gibson P94.
@guitartec It's just an ESP LTD Viper. I think it's a 303 or something. They stoped making it. It was all Mahogany (Important) and had two humbuckers. Phil removed the humbuckers and put a P94 in it and the only colour ESP had available to give him was a really ugly brown so he covered it in stickers. It's not a Drills model guitar. :D
Phil Xenidis, better known as Phil X, is a Canadian-born guitarist and co-founder of the Los Angeles-based Turbo pop band Powder. Phil also plays guitar and sings for the band The Drills. Phil is a prolific session guitarist, having played on albums by Tommy Lee,MY Mom,Methods of Mayhem, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Rob Zombie, Chris Daughtry, Alice Cooper, Thousand Foot Krutch and others
@ILookLikealady It is insane, i agree. lol From what it seems like, and somebody please correct me if i'm wrong, but he first pushes down on the strings raising the pitch while simultaneously bending the neck forward (releasing tension on the strings via the neck which is loose to allow bending) so when he releases the tension on the strings at the headstock, it sounds like the strings are "dive bombing" cuz they are being loosened. But that's what i see in the video. Hope this helps a bit.
The Floyd Rose is interesting. Maybe put a Hurst T-handle on it...for burnouts. Good stuff. I have a 1992 '57 Black Beauty with a Bigsby, but I put a 9" Chet Atkins arm on it. It's easier to hold with the pinky and it looks Outrageous. Ha! Thanks for the tour.
Some many guitars, how many were borrowed from the Frettedamericana store? Gotta love the perks of a job, but better question yet, how many made it back to Frettedamericana?
Phil, that ES-330 is cool. Never saw one without the sound hole (f-hole). Kinda like Gretsch made/makes some closed top hollow guitars but they paint on the fake f-hole to give it that vibe. That foam thing on your ES-335 is a great idea and something I do too on some of my hollow bodies. I got that idea from Scotty Moore who played with Elvis from about 1954-1968. I also use plastic grommets that I got at Radio Shack. I think I got the idea from Scotty Moore too but I might be wrong. I line them up on the strings where you have the foam on yours but in a diagonal pattern. Very cool and effective. Try it if you have not yet. See if the foam is better or the grommets.
mine's not a special, it's a jr. and it's not a "this is better than that" thing. it's all preference. i freaking LOVE P90's and this guitar spoke to my heart when i picked it up. Steven Meyers had it at his booth at the Jan guitar show in santa monica and it was the 1 guitar i couldn't get out of my brain when i left. that guit is AMAZING. i love mid 60's standards too but it's all about connecting with the guitar for me.
and really, the 56 les paul with p90´s it´s a monster.And i´m talking of the reissue. I can´t imagine how it sounds that les paul. If you want p90 option, go for the squier (Yes, squier) tele custom II. Amazing guitar. It´s light, and has the simplicity and playability of a tele with the electric setup of a les paul and 2 p90´s "duncan designed" that sounds great. For a ridiculous prize. I love it. It´s my day a day guitar.
@ callyjohnwell obviously, the more you do anything, the better you'll get at it. the turning point for me was having to do bg vocals on a tour years ago and they were really high and i really wanted the gig so i just kept going for the notes and started hitting them. one day, the lead singer turned to me and said, "hey, can you soften those up a little? you're taking over" so i had to find a way to control the power and did just that. although, i'll be the first to say my control sucks.
thanx to phil I discover p90´s. Now I have the RI ofthat les paul 1956 gold top and a fender squier tele custom II (Great guitar, really, it combines the best of tele and a les paul) and now, I only play p90´s. The sound is so superior to any PU that you don´t need anything else.
Whoo! I love P90s too! Got myself one of them new Gibson SG Special 60s tributes. Frikken' amazing guitar for a "cheap" Gibson. Plays way better than many Gibsons 3-4 times the price to be honest! Phil X, will you be my dad?
"I used to switch to Wolverine and got nothing" hahaha! I have the two pickup version of that dano in black. Is yours an original or one of the 90's reissues? Mine is a 60s one but i have heard good things about the reissues so i might treat myself to one.
Hi Phil, Is the ESP strat a painted George Lynch model? ... If so, I totally get why you covered up the paint job. I'm a huge Lynch fan, but the tiger stripes are well ... you know... LOL
Phil, ya got a great line up there. Question...What is the make / model of the Drills guitar? Looks like it's a blast to play, and I'm wondering if they still make them
anyone else like more the gold tops than even the burst LP´s? I love them to death. The 56, the 57, the bonammassa (That´s only the 57 reissue with black parts) and even the slash gold top
i remember way back when Phil told me the wiggle stick on his old strat copy...that looks just like the wiggle stick on the esp, was a support from an old bar chair!!! I think it's vertical angle is for apppearance and ease of use.....but hey, i'm not Phil!!!!
thank you phill for the answer!!!!!i finally bought the viper standard that is Mahogany,do you think it can work with the p94?????i love your sound it's fucking rooock!!!!thank you
Phil X is a KING....
And born in Canada makes us proud up north...Rock on Phil X
you are da man bro
Peace
@WolfOverdrive He just pushes the E string down behind the nut, pulls down on the E string with his fretting hand and releases it slowly, so it's no actually going lower than E, it's just starting at a higher pitch and unbending back down to E. :)
PHIL X gets to use whatever he wants whenever he wants it! :)
Beautiful Apartment by the Drills
Great video and I love the Girl Inlays.
That song at the beginning is great!!!
@sacs1800
i've never had a problem with foam dampening the body resonance. you don't cram it in there. it's just barely touching the strings.
Phil X you are the man.
@richiepowa

Phil, I absolutely NEED to know where you got that scarf! and what it's called?! please!
@ hendrixj72
yes. Great sound sounding & quiet cobalt pickups but like I said in the vid, the neck is just ok.

@ILookLikealady

im guessing the ESP with stickers guitar is the signature og G.Lynch...haha he even gave a clue about it..."its "Scary" lol
Ha!

Phil reminds me of Josh Steely from Daughtry,thumbs up if you agree
i love how phil x shreds but like... doesnt shred. but he shreds. and i love it. but he doesnt shred. wtf y isnt this guy more popular

@ fjrsm
yup. that's my band THE DRILLS
"beautiful apartment" available on itunes
Phil! How does a gibson p94 sound in an acoustically bright sounding guitar? I'm considering replacing the p'ups in my EBMM Silhouette Special HSS
Great !! I like that !
@ retainerbrite2
it's a'60's atlas bass head. i describe it on the amp tour coming out soon.
You're awesome man! let me know when you'll play in Chi Town!
Phil, those guitars are sweet whered you get all those stickers though???
Some many guitars, how many were borrowed from the Frettedamericana store? Gotta love the perks of a job, but better question yet, how many made it back to Frettedamericana?

My drool cup runneth over...
Those stings need to be the next album cover:
Headstock with "Phil X" strings -
"The Drills"

@MacintoshPlus1MB
Pretty sure it's a junior. Only one P90 pickup. Specials have two, surely?
"It says Phil X with the strings" - it's genius! I will actually try this with my name!
Sweet thanks for making this!
I love that Calvin sticker! It wold look great on my bass^^
Whoo! I love P90s too! Got myself one of them new Gibson SG Special 60s tributes. Frikken' amazing guitar for a "cheap" Gibson. Plays way better than many Gibsons 3-4 times the price to be honest!
Phil X, will you be my dad?
U got my guitaaaaaaaaaar! :D
@giggs102 check out our website!!
@royalknight2
no... les paul custom. In a small period mid 60´s the les paul was in fact the sg
that schecter is mighty fine! just like all o' mine!!!
@cfan13 It's a floyd with his Flip Stick, I think.

Dude!!! I just had an ESS 64' gasm!

Hey Phil did you finally sell the 3PU Les Paul(SG)? And did you finally get that gold top you wanted?

Beautiful Apartment
"I used to switch to Wolverine and got nothing" hahaha!

Hey Phil what exactly is a "Strat Deluxe". Is it the Fender American Deluxe with the push button on the volume knob?
This guy's the man
Will He ever do a vid with the Tommy Lee guitar
Hi Phil,
Is the ESP strat a painted George Lynch model? ... If so, I totally get why you covered up the paint job. I'm a huge Lynch fan, but the tiger stripes are well ... you know... LOL

Where's the Rickenbacker Phil!! Hahaha, that's well smart what he did with the strings lol

sorry didn't get it, what are the second guitars that he shows??????? odd bar guitars? old bar guitars? cold bar guitars?
what is the model of the ltd with wolverine ??
Phil, ya got a great line up there. Question...What is the make / model of the Drills guitar? Looks like it's a blast to play, and I'm wondering if they still make them
do you use ear props when you play live and do rehearsals,
or do you just have and huge hearing damage
Phil, what kind of pickups are in your black '58 historic?
The flip stick guitar is the George Lynch guitar isnt it?
@ckfootballman i think its the lynch tiger
anyone else like more the gold tops than even the burst LP´s? I love them to death. The 56, the 57, the bonammassa (That´s only the 57 reissue with black parts) and even the slash gold top
The dani is def a re-issue which has tons of cool tones but I wish it had the original design's bridge instead if the fender style individual saddles.
epiphone sheridan? or sheraton?
Was there chalk or powder on the gold top Les Paul?
i wanna know 2!
WOOW at that Danelectro o0 !
Soooo badass with the Phil X on the Strings hahaaha

what is the model of the ltd equipped with p94???
how much stuff do you have.. do you own all the stuff in studio?
I think it would b cool if u took one of the guitars with the stickers n took em off n showed it to us haha
Wow thats a good idea. what band is your friend a tech for?
question: shoud i change my gibson sg special stock pickup for a p90?
i remember way back when Phil told me the wiggle stick on his old strat copy...that looks just like the wiggle stick on the esp, was a support from an old bar chair!!! I think it's vertical angle is for apppearance and ease of use.....but hey, i'm not Phil!!!!
