I’ve been analyzing Eddies guitars over the years especially the Kramer’s and I’ve never seen or heard of this specific guitar, ed had a bunch of custom Kramer’s built 1983-1989 years and this guitar was most likely a backup on the 5150 tour, I’d say this because the stripe job looks very similar to the 5150 Guitar that Eddie used from 1984 - 1989 on tour and in the studio [ his most famous Kramer ]. The strange thing is that It’s really worn out, after all Eddie only used the 5150 and rarely broke a string during a live show. Definitely not used on the F.U.C.K tour.... he had moved on to Ernie Ball MM guitars.
I was wondering if you could answer a question about that guitar based on your knowledge. Do you think the story behind that guitar is legitimate. A lot of things don't add up to me. That guitar is coming up in an auction in New York this spring. And I don't think the story they have is the right one. Was this curious on your insight, being someone who's done their homework.

Yeah, this guys seems like he either doesn't know what the hell he's talking about or just making shit up.Plus, it's not the "stryper guitar" Anyone who knows anything about VH knows it's called the Frankenstein. The no pick playing in annoying and sounds shitty. Is this guy a Lindsey Buckingham Fan? That would make more sense...
@Eric: Wrong. The Frankenstein guitar (which lots of folks call the Frankenstrat now) wasn't a Kramer at all. It was assembled from a Strat-style body and neck that were made by Charvel. The humbucker was a PAF from a 335. The Floyd was added after the fact too. Lots of other oddities created the scarred and patchwork appearance as well: the chopped pickguard with the vol pot moved, the nailed-on quarter, the eyehooks in place of conventional strap holders, at least 3 different paintjobs, etc. There have been a few replicas of it too, including one made at the Kramer factory with a Kramer neck (banana headstock) that Eddie posed with for an ad in guitar mags, but the Frankenstein predates his involvement with Kramer by many years. Most VH fans call guitars like the one in this video "the 5150" after the reflective decals reading that behind the trem on the most famous example. However, there are several different versions that Eddie played. For example, the real "5150" was a Pacer and had a straight (not angled) pickup. Another version had a Steinberger TransTrem installed on it. Another one reads "1984" instead of "5150." None of them are the Frankenstein though, and anyone who says something like that doesn't know what the hell he's talking about or is just making shit up.
Yeah ,yeah,Frankenstein, Frankenstrat. I know about Eddie's original version with the Charvel neck. I commented that calling any form of this guitar the "stryper" is just a goofy made up name. This guy is obviously playing one of the Kramer copies that Eddie might have used way before the F.U.C.K tour.Eddie was using the Music Man VH by then. You flat out calling me wrong is wrong. I didn't need you to write me a book about what i already know, but at least you may have schooled some of the other ass clowns like this guy who play VH without a pick. Ha, now you got me writing my own book to answer your book! Anyway Van Halen is awesome. This guy is a tool...
Awesome Vidio, for most of us. This is as close as we will get to one of Eddie's guitars ..loved the history behind it ..its great watching real musician's just pick up a guitar and jam a little ..wish the Vidio was longer is my only complaint!
Dude I remember your videos from the 90s or the 2000s.. I can' tbe lieve youre still kickin it. Have you ever met EVH?? You are taking his style and reinventing it for a new generation. Thank you for what you are doing my man!!
Rand al'Thor lmao rumor has it, cliff burton faked his death, completely changed his identity and became this dude. But anyways Rest In Peace cliff burton, if he was still alive, he would’ve been one of the best bassists of all tims
I tried out one of the yellow striped Van Halen edition at the music store, and the top frets were so tall it felt like the guitar neck was scalloped ... sort of like an Yngwie's guitars. But there was no scalloping. Tallest frets I ever played.
Did he really use this on the FUCK tour? I thought he was using Ernie Ball Music Man’s on that tour and used this on the 5150 and OU812 tours? Just curious.
i read an old guitar player from BITD interview that eddie supposedly said he angled the gibson humbucker like that on the original Frankenstrat because the string spacing on fender is wider and angling the narrower gibson humbucker made it so there was some magnet (whether it be screw poles or slug poles) under each string.
I met Zeke in 88 at the hotel, day before the MOR show. We played name that VH tune in his room, he on the 1984 guitar and me on the (actual) 5150 with the Kramer neck bolted on. It has a WAY sloppier bar and the quarter under the bridge. Every second of those 20 minutes, till Eddie called and was chewing him out, is burned into my brain till the day I die. Still have the card he pulled from a magazine with his hand written instructions to get my passes the next day and the Crew Pass he gave me. Like a dope, In put the EVH pick back on the guitar but the next day a roadie have me one of Mikey's.
@@pasqualeporpora Ed never took the Frank on the road by that time. But the guitar had "5150" on it, it was a Kramer and the quarter was beside the low E side of the bridge.
Does anyone know where this "Stryper" name came from?! That's never been used by Kramer or Eddie, but I'm just curious where and why this name was used here?
Nah man, the guitar-amp combination is pretty insane. Squiers aren't that bad but this guitar is something else. Not denying that your ability to play is the most important thing, though.

The one he's playing is Kramer's version of the Frankenstein. Idiot... fuck off
Awesome Vidio, for most of us. This is as close as we will get to one of Eddie's guitars ..loved the history behind it ..its great watching real musician's just pick up a guitar and jam a little ..wish the Vidio was longer is my only complaint!
Man, you got some serious tone in them hands brother!
Dude I remember your videos from the 90s or the 2000s.. I can' tbe lieve youre still kickin it. Have you ever met EVH?? You are taking his style and reinventing it for a new generation. Thank you for what you are doing my man!!
Very exciting and unique style! Good Stuff!
It was inspiring and a perspective freshener to hear this kind of playing with fingers only thank you
Jared, what kind of pickup exactly is in this particular one and how heavy is this guitar..? thx.!
Excellent guitar playing IMO, nice demo.
you right this is an iconic guitar ... being a van halen fan one when i watch thid guitar i see the perfect guitar ... the real dream
Wow is that really claptons sg in the background
Hey man I had the same guitar without the stripes it was called a Stryker though and that lick at the beginning got me to sub haha peace.
Excellent job Mr. Nichols, loved the review.
Dude...Thats like 100% priceless now. Eddie just passed....
Jared is an awesome player, love how he plays it totally with his style. Amazing guitar as well.
Is that the fool SG sitting in the background, so subtly. Man I wanna hear that?
He did a video demo of it
Always a great show! !! Thank you!
is there any way I can get a 'kick yer ass in 17 minutes' cd
Something about his face reminds me of Cliff Burton...
Rand al'Thor lmao rumor has it, cliff burton faked his death, completely changed his identity and became this dude. But anyways Rest In Peace cliff burton, if he was still alive, he would’ve been one of the best bassists of all tims
Yes... I was just thinking he looked familiar! Doppelgänger
I get a ted nugent vibe from him.
Will Jared come back? Where are the new videos? C'mon, Fretted Americana, we need more videos, Jared is awesome!
I'd love to know how much this was up for!
Inspiring to see you play like this without a pick. Great playing.
Just curious.
great playing and great style
Really cool guitar. You guys gonna re-do this with Phil, right? ...You guys HAVE to do this one with Phil.
Andre Amabile this^^^
I've always wondered what the story behind the touquoise ring was. Can anyone tell me?
Awesome brother!! Looks like ur holding Excalibur....
Badass!!!! Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!
When he first started playing, his face. I died 😂😂
Where's Phil X?
You guys still use his pic in the channel, but it's been months since he played here :'/
Great demo and great axe!
I could be wrong, but was this recorded at Sound City? Looks like it.
Really muddy sounding but awesome guitar playing is that a seymour duncan pickup in there?
i read an old guitar player from BITD interview that eddie supposedly said he angled the gibson humbucker like that on the original Frankenstrat because the string spacing on fender is wider and angling the narrower gibson humbucker made it so there was some magnet (whether it be screw poles or slug poles) under each string.
Did you mean Eddie's original Frankenstrat with a Kramer neck? The 5150 didn't have a quarter under the bridge....the Frankie did.
@@pasqualeporpora Ed never took the Frank on the road by that time. But the guitar had "5150" on it, it was a Kramer and the quarter was beside the low E side of the bridge.
This is what the EVH stripe series should sound like...
Always loved this guitar
Awesome demo. I enjoyed the hell out of this.
Does anyone know where this "Stryper" name came from?! That's never been used by Kramer or Eddie, but I'm just curious where and why this name was used here?
Why don’t you post any other video?
You're killin me on the effects smalls.
The sound of this guitar is heavenly. Haven't heard a better tone in a long time.
It's the player, not the guitar. Give him a $90 Squier and he's gonna sound just about the same.
Nah man, the guitar-amp combination is pretty insane. Squiers aren't that bad but this guitar is something else. Not denying that your ability to play is the most important thing, though.
Phil X stated on Twitter that he's done with these videos because they "weren't fun anymore." RIP to this channel, it's been real.
