no dude, i was into "parts guitars" back then. would buy necks, bodies, pickups and throw it all together. sometimes it was awesome and sometimes it was questionable. haha
Yeah found a dumpster guitar ,,, strat style ... Fill in t/ hole w/ bondo 2 make a hard spot 4 t/ bridge ... Thick fretbourd all good ... Many diff elc 2 play with ... Luv tubes ... Luv ur wrk ... Thankz ... D ...
I keep coming back to this video every now and then to remind myself, "Yes - he has always been legendary." You're one of my true guitar heroes, man; have a kick-ass day!
entire song is a masterpiece! Please re-record with modern high def because my ears need juice. LOL. Gross. But you know what I mean. My ears need j-u-i-c-e.
Actually some of the best solo work for guitar I've heard in this genre, it experiments, isn't cliché, is actually written as a piece of music and not an n minute long solo, and at the same time it actually sounds great, something which eludes many people who get the first couple of things right. I really wish you'd do more stuff like this some time Phil :P
Randy Coven on bass & Karim Moussa on drums. This was the only track we ever recorded as it was just to show off the flipstick. Karim & I did a few shows with Randy playing his stuff & covers as the Randy Coven Band.
thanks PHIL for inspiring me and giving me the desire to continue living... Greetings from ARGENTINA... sorry if my English is bad.... PS ... you have many FANS in this country... :D
i remember this guy.I met him in 1988 I think. I was 18 and the band I was in was backing him up when he was in Frozen Ghost. I even tried that guitar he's playing. Really cool guy.Hey Phil. I'm diggin your vids.
Just to put everyone's mind at ease. He made the flipstick because he didn't like the fact that traditional whammy bars had to either be screwed right in (which would get in the way of him playing/using the volume and tone knobs) or swinging about (which would hit him in the knuckles). This eliminated both problems.
+philx111 I think I've finally figured out the tune here. It's Steve Morse - 'Cruise Missile', with the outro from 'Cruise Control' by the Dregs (Still Steve Morse).
Thanks for sharing. I´m 68 and this is some of the best guitar playing I have ever heard or seen in my life. It´s Hendrix, you, Mattias ia Eklund and Tommy Emannuel top of the hill in no special order and then of course a whole bunch of other talented guys and girls like the young asian girls.
+diggingwithmartin thx guys. just a '76 Marshall JMP 100 watt & a parts guitar with a Duncan JB & Floyd Rose trem. probably the BOSS SD-1 for the theme & solo. all fx done at mixdown
it looks like a neck i got from a company called "signature" in canada. i don't think they're around anymore. plus i only got parts because the girl liked me. hahaha
I didn't hear Vai or Satriani in that.......given Phil's age and more likely influences....... it sounds a lot like Jeff Beck. This song would have fit right in as an extra track on "Wired"
Phil, DUDE, I never get tired of watching your videos, cause no matter what shit's going on in my life, I can always pump the volume up and watch you do your stuff, and just bang my head off! You're my guitar idol! So thank you for existing!!! And thank you for blessing us with your music!
@hatehomework i have and love both. they're too different to actually say which is better but in this time of overpriced gibbys', i'd get an LTD Viper 401 and stick a gibson P94 in the bridge position for an amazing rock machine. and if you go crazy on stage and break the headstock like i have, you can glue her back together and not worry about decreasing the value.
Phil X has become my favorite guitarist of all time because he takes everything good about classic rock, funk and blues and made it his own style. KEEP ROCKIN PHIL!
Phil, I am 14, I've been playing guitar since I was 3. I haven't had a major drive to play the guitar for a little while now. then I saw this video along with your frettedamericana videos and I am inspired beyond belief. you are my idol. thank you.
Phil I have been playing guitar for 20 years and have many of the same heros a guitarist get attached to when learning to play like, Hendrix, Page,Townshend, Angus etc. I got a little bored playing in the last few years as now Im in my 40's, then after watching the guitar demo's on fretted and learning about Powder and now the Drills, I have put you in my group of modern guitar Heroes and you have inspired me to continue playing and learning. Thanks Phil, love ya
wow you really know what your talking about, you have such a wealth of musical knowledge to share with the world! Because I am sure you are a experienced and knowledgable musician..........
Phil x any chances you come to play here in Paris ??? You are absolutly awsome, you have so much energy and you put so much passion in your playing and your music, you inspire me to become a better musician. In few words you make feel happy :D ! ROCK on !!
Phil you're one my favorite guitar players of all time! That's included with all the other greats I love! You're amazing and the way you play guitar inspires me !! Keep on Rockin🤘🏼
I remember you playing guitar with your brother Jimmy.. I dare not say what you played?heh heh it was when you guys moved to Erindale Village, I lived there too, we went to Springfield public school ohh God in the 70's wow you've come along way...everyone seams to know you from Frozen Ghost...I really think your great! Miss L Wilkinson
man oh man, i need tab for this.... ive been watching it for the past couple of month everyday and it never ceases to amaze me.. the intro is one of the coolest things ive ever listened to and i especially love the harmonics... so yeah, if anyone has tab or if Phil would be nice enough to transcribe it that would be great! just give me shout if anyone has them.. thanks!
I believe that I saw Phil X playing with another Canadian rocker, Aldo Nova back in the nineties. Even though I am a huge Rik Emmett fan, I would have loved to see Phil take on the guitar chores in Triumph, Phil is such a versatile and inspiring player. It's great to see a northern boy make it as such a respected and sought after player. Thanks Phil for inspiring us boys back home!
Phil, you're awesome. like seriously, you're extremely underrated, i can count on my fingers the number of guitarists out there who can do anything like that.
I can't believe I only discovered you today (I'm 43). And I'm Canadian, too. Better late than never. You totally are the real deal, I will gladly pay to rock out with any band your in, or on tour with. Kudos
@WideSword the flipstick is just the arm. it's attached to a floyd and the difference is obviously the angle in which it protrudes from the body of guitar. oh... and girth of course.
"Flippin' Out" is the name of it. You wouldn't find a better version anywhere else then this video, trust me, I've looked for weeks. Phil X made this song to advertise his custom whammy bar he created back in the late 80's called the 'Flip Stick'. (Don't try looking for it, I can't find it anywhere either) That's what that huge piece of metal is on the bridge of the guitar, same with why his leg lifts up every second or two... because he's hitting it. Great guitar player! One of my idols too!
no dude, i was into "parts guitars" back then. would buy necks, bodies, pickups and throw it all together. sometimes it was awesome and sometimes it was questionable. haha
Yeah found a dumpster guitar ,,, strat style ... Fill in t/ hole w/ bondo 2 make a hard spot 4 t/ bridge ... Thick fretbourd all good ... Many diff elc 2 play with ... Luv tubes ... Luv ur wrk ... Thankz ... D ...

@ philx111
Was this when you were with Aldo?
Dang dude ...
The queshion guitar!!! Mine is a Kramer cheapo with the original original no fine tuner Floyd and a mix of super and medium jumbo frets
I keep coming back to this video every now and then to remind myself, "Yes - he has always been legendary."
You're one of my true guitar heroes, man; have a kick-ass day!
I had to look to see if your name was Steve Vai !😃🎸⚡🔥
dude, that was me but my wife's friend was on my f*cking mac and didn't sign off. funny but thanks a lot. that really means a lot man. phil x
intro is a masterpiece.
thx
This is masterpiece
entire song is a masterpiece! Please re-record with modern high def because my ears need juice. LOL. Gross. But you know what I mean. My ears need j-u-i-c-e.
philx1111 you seriously good at making coooool and weird sounds hahahah
If Phil x and Bernard Purdie made a video together, my head would probably literally explode from excitement.
Sounds like Phil was listening to Vai back in those days. What a great jam with great playing.
I would say Joe Satriani or Vai with a touch of the other
Phil told me that so many people told him he sounded like Steve Vai that he "went to the woodshed" and didn't come out until he had his own style.
I hear some Bettencourt in the intro also.
For me, it's very Dregs/Morse.
Actually some of the best solo work for guitar I've heard in this genre, it experiments, isn't cliché, is actually written as a piece of music and not an n minute long solo, and at the same time it actually sounds great, something which eludes many people who get the first couple of things right. I really wish you'd do more stuff like this some time Phil :P
that intro has mad modern insta guitar vibes, like tim henson and ichika nito, phils the best man!
I think I’ve heard that exact riff in a Steve Vai song. I hear a lot of passion and warfare in this.
Randy Coven on bass & Karim Moussa on drums. This was the only track we ever recorded as it was just to show off the flipstick. Karim & I did a few shows with Randy playing his stuff & covers as the Randy Coven Band.
'89 i think. more later like 93-97 before i moved to LA. ahhhh.
had some magical moments then too. hahha.
I had no idea Phil x that you played with triumph they were one of my all-time favorites back,in the 80's, fight the good fight.
Watch any one of Phil X's videos and if that doesn't make you smile AND want to play your guitar....well...there might be something wrong with you.
I had this stuck in my head after like 7 years
That was fantastic guitar playing! Wow!
thanks PHIL for inspiring me and giving me the desire to continue living...
I'm diggin your vids.
those who were born in early 80's will totally dissagree 80's were awsome! great vid, god bless
Just to put everyone's mind at ease. He made the flipstick because he didn't like the fact that traditional whammy bars had to either be screwed right in (which would get in the way of him playing/using the volume and tone knobs) or swinging about (which would hit him in the knuckles). This eliminated both problems.
I listen to this song at least once everyday. This song is amazing, and Phil X is definitely one of my favorite guitar players.
Dear Mr. X. Thank you for your continued contribution to the interestingness of guitar related music. This clip is outstanding.
This video is one year older than me! O.o
It's all parts thrown together. I remember a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge & a Floyd Rose. Everything else was just lying around.
The liberty spikes Phil X, the eighties hair Phil X, and then the normal rockin' phil X. All great, Great stuff phil, great stuff
i only play live with randy a couple of times. i only wrote this 'cause i had free studio time that somebody owed me. haha
Phil X in 80's mode. Cool or what. A kneww whammy bar!!!! Fantastic.
+philx111
I think I've finally figured out the tune here. It's Steve Morse - 'Cruise Missile', with the outro from 'Cruise Control' by the Dregs (Still Steve Morse).

1:13 lol @ that move by the bassist.
LOL!!!
Oh hes hittin the peacock!!!
He had to take a sloppy gassy shit and is sucking it back up.
Like a gazelle mid stride
The best Phil, regards from Santiago of Chile..... come to my city, and thanks for the mail reply of tips!!
Chauu David
"was this before or after you were with triumph?"
about 2 years before.
THE LAST 70 YEARS OF HISTORY ARE INCREDIBLY WELL DOCUMENTED
wow!!! how could anybody dislike this??? this guy is a great player!!!
+diggingwithmartin They are just jealous
with good reason they are and I am too but I love this guys playing. wish I knew what amp/effects he is using on this, great 80's rock guitar sound!!!
+diggingwithmartin thx guys. just a '76 Marshall JMP 100 watt & a parts guitar with a Duncan JB & Floyd Rose trem. probably the BOSS SD-1 for the theme & solo. all fx done at mixdown
well, tremendous playing & tone!!!
Awesome Phil...Is that the '76 JMP you still have to this day ??
Is there a cleaner version of this? That is kick ass.
wtf is up with the whammy bar? Classic Phil X. Thank you for the video.
I really wanna see a video of you using the FlipStick nowadays and see what you can come up with, Phil :3
@Ibik
i called it a flipstick. a lot of my friends called it a kick stand. hahaha
so good great man first time i hear about Phil X
it looks like a neck i got from a company called "signature" in canada. i don't think they're around anymore. plus i only got parts because the girl liked me. hahaha
Wow... Phil... I never stood a chance as a guitar player compared to you!
"0:25 hey joe (:"
of course
I'm just going to come out and say it
that is the biggest most awesomest whammy bar i've ever seen
what little riff in the middle. give me the 0:00 and i'll hit it at FA next time we do vid some guits.
the knee whammy blows my mind !!! and so those the harmonics intro !!!!
He looked like a cross between Eddie van Halen and Steve Vai back then, wow
Not only did he look but he sounded as well!
Phil X is one of my heros. Absolutely amazing 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
"flippin' out" by phil x. oh yeah... that's me.
I love the 80's and I'm happy I lived them .... great guitar playing Phil ( as always )
@hatehomework
i have and love both. they're too different to actually say which is better but
in this time of overpriced gibbys', i'd get an LTD Viper 401 and stick a gibson
P94 in the bridge position for an amazing rock machine. and if you go
crazy on stage and break the headstock like i have, you can glue her
back together and not worry about decreasing the value.
The clean intro sounds like 80s version of Polyphia.
no. i went crazy, shaved my head and turned every floyd rose guitar i had into a coffee table. well.... it was more of an art piece.
U just amazing, a god. Huge inspiration, in my top 5 phil!!! Love from Portugal.
olla mr X where can i find one of those flipsticks ;-)
Phil X has become my favorite guitarist of all time because he takes everything good about classic rock, funk and blues and made it his own style. KEEP ROCKIN PHIL!
Vai influence? just a little.
Phil, I am 14, I've been playing guitar since I was 3. I haven't had a major drive to play the guitar for a little while now.
then I saw this video along with your frettedamericana videos and I am inspired beyond belief.
you are my idol.
thank you.
Phil X should switch to floyd rose again. Way cool!!! 80's!
Phil X, plus Ibanez electric guitar, in 1989, = TOTAL AWESOMENESS!
I'll take "Inventions that are utterly fekking useless, especially if you're drinking." for $500 Alex.
Thanks Phil, love ya
so much van halen influence. sick.
