Amazing tip on dipping the clear parts in the clear varnish, really top notch idea!!!
It would be nice if Humbrol could take the time to answer a few the queries raised by viewers,
-Spend two months building a model locomotive;
-Spend three weeks painting and lining it out;
-See the best part of three months' work ruined before your eyes when the varnish goes milky within seconds of application.
Not best pleased.
Same here , what did you use in your next project
I've gone back to my old method- watered down PVA. Dries to a satin finish, is DEFINITELY water soluble (unlike Clear, which isn't), doesn't smell, dries quickly and doesn't go cloudy.
@@chelseaK11 I Humrbol's rattle can clear coat in gloss and it reacted with some of my paintwork. I've bought Vallejo clear gloss - I was wondering do you not suffer from visible brush strokes from painting clear coats? Any tips for a newbie please?! I did a test bed and I could see strokes.
@@chelseaK11 Thank you!
It goes foggy when you apply it too thickly (I've experimented)
Great!. Must have product for sailing ships (plastic kit) modeling.
Cheap, very easy to use and the end results are stunning!
Wow beautiful, real piece of art, i really love all WW2 relics
Yes this product is available in Australia, we sent a shipment to Australia earlier this year so they should be in stock. Ask your local model shop to contact SMS, they are our Australian Humbrol distributors.
Wow, I will definitely be picking up a bottle of this.
Of course :) The new range of Enamel Washes should be released in June, the videos will be available then.
We are working on them at the moment, we expect they will be able in June.
We'll add it to the list of further videos.
Not yet, but it's on our list of videos to do.
That Spit is awesome!
It's thinned down Humbrol Acrylic paint. We will have videos showing the new Humbrol Enamel Washes range.
Yes, although you will need to apply more coats to achieve a high gloss finish.
Ok. Thanks for replying.
We have recently reformulated Humbrol Enamel No.30 Dark Green to MAP ‘Dark Green’, this is the correct colour to paint your Lancaster.
Yes, see the 'Humbrol - Weathering Powder - Rolling Stock ' video.
Gotta try this.
Thanks
Im making a big model and that dipping of varnish is a grate tip thinks. 👍
Yes, however you may need to apply several coats to achieve the same effect.
thank you, this channel gifs me good information for my models :)
Thanks really needed to know how to do that properly!
Excellent quality varnish. Goes on nice and even with no brush marks. Washes off with water. Quick drying. Much better gloss than klear. Though it's a bit pricey. Good product humbrol!
stuartsteel1 nice try humbrol employee.
Good video, good product!
This depends on what finish you are looking for. If you paint and then dip in Clear then your paint will be glossy. Alternatively you could dip in Clear and then paint, this would give you a gloss/glass like appearance and then your matt paint on top.
I like Humbrol for a lot of applications, but for a clearcoat Alclad is way better IMO. You do have to airbrush it, but it goes on thin, dries fast and hard. I love it. And probably because it’s such a thin coat (compared to brushing Humbrol), I think it has a more reasonable sense of depth and sheen. Just a thought.
I bought some to try after watching this clip and used it on my 1/72 F-16XL build. It's been perfect with no issues at all.I wonder if it's climate sensitive which may be causing others to have grief. For me, so far so good.
probably trolls for other companies to take away business from humbrol
Tim Annear nice try..
Probably u 2 work 4 humbrol aint ya. U ruined my over 50 hour model.. think bout thah ya lil. Worst thing is, u avent changed a thing in fofe years... oi wtf m9?
@@sw1000xg sw1000xg? Really? you can't handle the thought that people may have problems with this product? I've just spent a few weeks on a model with a custom paint job and $30 worth of decals and its cracked all over. Ruined. A lot of forums say the same thing. Just because you haven't had any problems, doesn't mean others don't.
You can bet I won't be using this stuff again.
@@RangaPirate another troll... paid?
@@RangaPirate NO
ONLY TROLLS SAY BAD THINGS WHAAAHAHAH
You convinced so I bought some, along with Decalfix and a black wash. :)
Good video thanks - I'll check where to acquire some - I live in Canada but typically order via the USA
Pratice makes perfect. Just take your time and think about your steps before applying any paint.
We would recommend using Humbrol Matt Acrylic Varnish.
You can use it on any model.
You can apply more than one coat. The more coats you apply, the glosser the finish becomes.
Ive got humbrol clear now and decal fix and filler and no.30 dark green :)
First of all, thank you for these great videos. I've learned a lot. And not just about Humbrol products but about scale modelling in general :) I have a question: I have painted a plastic figure using bronze acrylic paint. After basecoating, I brushed on two thin coats of Clear, waiting between each coat. After that I used black enamel paint with enamel thinners and mixed a wash. Everything was ok but after a few minutes the model started to turn white, foggy. Any ideas?
This is next on my weekly shopping list. Groceries? Pah!
I'm planning to get my rose wood guitar autographed and draw on a couple art pieces. What do you recommend I should do to keep the quality of the guitar safe from diminishing its sound?
No, however decals are best applied to a gloss surface.
This really depends on what model you are painting. Camo changes depending on aircraft, date, country, etc.
Could Humbrol Clear be used on old diecast Gerry Anderson type vehicles that have been restored with new paint jobs to look glossy and new?
Nice one John :)
Thanks so much for showing me how to use this clear varnish .. how many layers by brush can you do over the decals please
thankyou. can i use this on stone for an exterior project?
It's general purpose masking tape by a company called near. It's all my local hardware store had. I don't know if I need a higher quality tape. I avoid getting it on the tape but I think it spills through and absorbs it.
Hi, really good product. How do you clean your airbrush gun ? What is best to use?
Yes this should cause you an issue. Please test before applying to your model.
AC7431 - Humbrol Clear
I have a question would you paint your canopy frame before or after dipping them in the clear?
Getting into humbrol, does the matt version of clear still makes the carrier film in decals blend in as good as gloss??
Hi Jack, What tape are you using?
Great tuturiol do you know anything about the AK 3rd generation clear varnish gloss and the tinner that was the tinner they suggested I use to tin it both AK 3rd gen
Are you applying the washes to a gloss surface?
I have used Humbrol clear in 1/35 figures.in the figures painted only with acrylics I didn't have any problem at all but in figures primed with enamel and acrylic over it when I used Humbrol clear I had this misty, white upon them. Thus,my conclusion is that Humbrol clear works only with acrylics not with enamel so be careful.
That is exactly what I had happen to a whitemetal loco kit when I used Clear on it. I had to strip it back down to bare metal and start over again. I haven't used this product since.
I decided to use it again in my next dragon figures. But everything went ok and no milky stains.I think that as Humbrol says it has to do with humidity and cold weather. The previous figure maybe didn't get dry completly and that caused the milky stains to appear in some points. This time i had my figures in room temperature and Clear worked. So,what I understood is that Humbrol Clear and Humbrol Cotes should be sprayed in room conditions without humidity. Also in case that they appear you can remove by applying a varnish from another firm.
Thanks :)
Try the Tamiya masking tape, this is one of the better modelling tapes available.
Do Humbrol do masking tape
Try applying less Wash or wiping the excess Wash away. The idea is to only highlight the selected areas.
Can you show me a compare and contrast of brush on vs airbrush to see which one has a smoother surface finish?
When are the new washes out I really want some
awsome
yes.
may i use instead of Humbrol gloss clear the Humbrol 35 gloss diluted or not with a humbrol thinner for the glass looking like of the canopy ?
ty in advance
Thank you
Is this one suppose to be Pledge'e Future ? Does it work the same way ?
Can it protect against turpentine and enamel thinners?
We already have that one in the plan.
First, what does one clean brushes/airbrushes with, and second, can I spray over with Humbrol Matt Cote rather than acrylic based coats?
Can I use it over Humbrol acrylic spray can paints? I heard something about it crackling the finish.
Wow. Can you make a video for model filler?
Can the humbrol clear be used on enamel paint finishes, as use it and then applied a wash and then removed the excess with enamel thinners, the paint started to peel and crack, any help?
Is there a tutorial of how to apply canopies to models using Humbrol Clearfix and a tutorial of how to paint canopies with Humbrol Clear Paint?
Very Good Turorials, keep posting such videos and thank you!
what wash is it you use? looks impressive results
When applying varnish on 00 gauge locos I find I get slight brush marks/streaks. How do I avoid this?
Hello can i use thinned enamel black paint for the gap details?
Would I be able to spray humbrol matt cote over this?
Hi Humbrol. I have read several comments that after use of Clear the paint has turned White. I too have been making your new Ford Fiesta RS WRX and have suffered the same problem. I have used Humbrol Primer from the can followed by Humbrol 14 from a can given the model three coats of number 14. After two coats of clear the model has turned White. There are two comments similar to mine can you please help us?
question please: can i mix the use of acrylic and enamel, paints and varnishes? Someone told me that you can only put enamel varnish on enamel and acrylics, but not acrylic varnish on enamel paints?
I usually mask primer than paint so it looks like I I dip in clear I don't meet to primer thx ekmad for the advice
what are your tips on painting the spitfire. I want to know how to get a flawless finish
It says that you shouldn't use it under 15 degrees celcious but would it be ok to use in lower temperatures?
I watched this video this morning (I didn't read the comments below), bought the product (satin finish) this afternoon and tonight my model is ruined! The varnish has turned white. I used an airgun to apply in comfortably warm room. I see it's been a problem before and also features on some forums. Did I do something wrong Humbrol?
should i use this for my lancaster?
Would you say polishing = applying clear coating varnish? I am new to this. Please help
Worked great for me! Thanks

Does anyone know what temperature you're supposed to leave the model to dry in because it took a lot longer to dry than the said time, I mean a lot longer, so can anyone help me out
thank the gods for this look like it performs the way old johnsons klear did. i just hope its sucks the decals down like old klear did
Hello, what do I use to clean airbrush with after spraying this product please?
After allowing Humbrol Clear to fully clear, is it safe to use acrylic based washes and small amounts of acrylic thinner to remove excess wash?
Same as ol Future, albeit Future (or Klear)
costs a fraction of the price.
the clear parts dipping technique is not working for me with this Humbrol Clear some areas dont take the clear and are uneven. Although it is transparent with light you can see lines of excess clear
How can i eliminate the frosting, whe Humbrol Clear dries? I detect that happen more where i handle the model. Please help!!
Hello Humbrol, I have the Humbrol Matt varnish which is acrylic can I use this to coat on top of Humbrol oil paint?
FantasyFlyerGames don't use the matt pure or you'll have your model frozen. mix 50/50 with gloss for a fine matt finish, 1/4 matt 3/4 gloss and you have a fine semigloss finish.
sorry for my english
Does this varnish protects the model from enamel thinners?
How are you applying Clear?
3:09 Should the "dirt" be cleaned with dry cotton?
Can I use this with a brush to place weathering powder on hornby stuff?
Can I use enamel gloss on acrylic paint?
Is this the same product as Humbrol's tinned gloss varnish, or is it of a different consistency?
What is the size/number of the brush used to apply the varnish?
Which spray varnish should I use to return it back to a matt finish? I have painted the model with humbrol enamel, then a coat of the Clear. After decals, does it matter if I use the Acrylic or Enamel matt varnish? I have a spray can of both...dont want to use the wrong one!
can you make a video about humbrol filler, since my milliput takes forever to roll and dry, and dries very hard, so id difficult to sand.
What is the mixture rate for thinning paints? I always get brush lines from painting and the enamels are just too thick.
