I am a model builder for over 20 years, and with Your channel I can learn many new ways to improve my skills. I didn't realised that with Maskol I can make a "rusty signs". Gotta test it on my new tanks ;) Thank You, Humbrol, for this channel! Cheers, Andrew
To clarify. If a canopy has been treated with Humbrol clear gloss to create a glass effect, does this mean Maskol cannot be used to mask it when painting the canopy frame?
An informative video. I am just getting back into model making after a number a decades doing other things. One thing I have learnt and rad about is prepping the surface before painting. This includes decreasing the surface as fingers leave a grease marks. I notice that the body of the tank, while still being a paint work in progress, was being held by bare hands rather than gloved hands. Does finger grease not materially affect the importance of humbrol products?
Hi, I am a newbie to airbrushing and using masking solution and need your expert suggestion on how to properly remove the masking solution without scratching the underlying base paint I applied. I am working on a Tamiya Leopard A4 and the two-color camouflage scheme requires that I first airbrush a layer of red brown, applied masking solution to outline the camouflage pattern, then airbrush the olive drab over the red brown and the masking solution. But maybe I applied too thin a layer of masking solution or too thick a layer of the olive drab paint, when I tried to remove the masking solution using a small tweezers, I always scratched the underlying red brown paint. And since I applied a thin layer of masking solution (I used the Mr. Hobby Masking Sol R), it’s become difficulty to discern the contour of the masking solution under the 2 layer of the olive drab paint! Do you have any suggestion? As a last resort, I might just spray over the scratched surface and use the one-color camouflage scheme. Thanks for any suggestions!
One of the best chipping effect ever seen! And so easy to do this way! No hair spray, no salt, easy. My humbrol maskol is not so creamy. It is more thick. What can I use as thinner to make it more easy to use with a brush?
I have a question - you sprayed grey acrylic over the rust colour and maskol in the last demonstration on this video and then used enamel thinners to bleed the rust. I use enamel paints to spray, so would using the enamel thinners still be safe to use to bleed the rust? or would this take off my grey enamel painted finish? cheers. Dave
After recently trashing a kit painted with Tamiya using Decalfix without knowing it would react with it... I'm not ready to do it all over again with the Maskol bottle I bought at the same time without being 100% sure it's safe to use on Tamiya paint... so, if anyone knows...
For fine flowing shapes the result doesn’t look very smooth based on the demo. (eg current NATO schemepattern) it looks very sloppy. I‘ll stick to putty😹
how long do you let the airbrush colour dry before you apply the liquid mask? Just to prevent the original colour (acrylics) from coming with it afterwards
Hi I got a question I'm building a SD Gundam and I want to use this kind of masking liquid the colors that I use is Mr color metallic can I use this Mexican liquid over the painting parts or I need to do something else
I have used maskol, but don't understand when you use it, it seems so easy. When I use it, no sooner do I get the maskol on a brush, it quickly solidifies. How do you get it to be so easy to use
Hello this is a new guy online with a question how do I repair a broken canopy and restore it to like new condition ...for applying it to my model Aircraft...signed Emmett U.S.M.C...11,12,2017..
My maskol is thick and gets stuck in my paintbrushes, in this video your maskol was quite thin looking watered down. Have you done any thing to the maskol before applying? Also what is the best way to apply humbrol model filler. Please reply, thanks. :)
I never succeeded to apply Maskol: the maskol always dry fast, the brush is quickly rubbered. I wet and wet and wet the brush, and wet again, and wet as possible to be wet and the maskol always dry on the brush before I had time to apply more than 10 seconds... It drives me crazy, I already killed 5 brush to try to apply maskol. That's the mystery trick to succeed !!??
Nice video. Question: Eventho it is mentioned in the video that maskol could be applied over dry and fully cured Humbrol acryrilcs, what was the Tiger painted with, enamels? Regards.
It's a shame about the lid on the Maskol, mine cracked after the first time I opened it and then it all cured. Complete waste of my money. Won't be buying it again.
The result shows it rly drastical: this method is extremly grap. there are no rly sharp edges, the paint is partly removed also and on the front of the turret you see its not even completely removed. looks more like a explodes first paint instead of a sharp edged camouflage. if i need to paint with pencil, i do it instead of make this shit.
My clear arrived in the mail moments ago i was planing to apply clear to the canopy then mask it with Maskol the video mentions this is not a good idea, what would happen? Can i apply clear as a final step after removing the maskol? Thank you
could you use it over loco windows and stickers instead of masking up with normal tape to weather a loco that would save a lot of fiddly masking with tape?
I plan to get some of this and the Vallejo mask just in case this doesn't like Vallejo paint. I think this would take away some of the intimidation of doing hard edged camo and multi patter camo.
Hi guys! It's unsafe to use Maskol if the model have already a coat of gloss varnish or reacts bad only with Humbrol gloss varnish? Thanks in advance :)
I used maskol this mor inf but when I peeked it off later, some of the edges of the paint kind of stretched off with it. So I didn't get clear crisp edges. The paint looked dry but I suspect it wasn't completely. How long would you leave the painted model before peeling off maskol
@@yousuckatfortnite5598 lol Jesus are you using oil paints?! Modern acrylics need an hour or so at most to cure enough to use this stuff, it always leaves a rough edge, it’s because Maskol is garbage, you can even see in this video how bad it is.
Hi, when I peel the Maskol some of the paint comes up and stands out of the vehicle. Could you please tell me what should I do to flatten the paint back? E.g. at 2:42.
Wow! So many questions in this Comment thread that are answered in the video. The idea is that you watch the whole video, not just read the video title.
I'm considering two diffrent masking soloutions, A: the Microscale micro mask and B: Humbrol Maskol. Now my question is, why should i get the Humbrol one and not the Microscale?
AdventureCayman The cost is about the same for both of them. and i haven't tried out maskol yet, but i will be doing it for a tank i'm currently working on. Mikromask doesn't smell, and maskol can be quite smelly, but the appearence i got is that maskol will be easier to remove. Micro mask dries as a thin plastic film, while maskol seems to dry like rubber or latex. I can do a deeper review once i tested it.
Ducesweden Thanks for that great info. One of the things I really like is how the maskol is rubberlike. After seeing the weathering techniques they did toward the end of the video I think this is the product for me. I have used other Microscale products and have personally never been impressed although others sear by them. I think it's all personal preferences and availability of products. I personally love Tamiya paints, yet I know a lot of people that can't stand them. I also love Polyscale which is no longer made :(
The chipping effect? Totally!!! Very smart and awesome effect so easy achieved with maskol, very good alternative, if not the best?
Rust effects are 1st class

amazing. Things changed a lot since my last modeling. I'm stunned.

They said if you added humbrol clear then you can’t, so yes also welcome back to this video after 7 years
Using maskol for replicating chipping effect looks like a good alternative to the salt and hairspray method I've seen demonstrated elsewhere.

im guessing from the way it can be cleaned from a brush with water that it can be thinned with water.

I also got that problem but stirring it helpet for me.
@@itzspeideren9004 Yep - says on the tin that you need to stir + shake the Maskol for it to work properly.
Great chipping and rust effect there! Even more so, with the paint layer looking like it has bubbled up as well as flaked off around the rust. :)

How to use Maskol: From my own experience.
1. Leave it on the shelf in the model shop.

Can this be used underneath a layer of Polyurethane primer ? So that I can remove it after panting to reveal the plastic to enable the use of cement.
I plan to get some of this and the Vallejo mask just in case this doesn't like Vallejo paint. I think this would take away some of the intimidation of doing hard edged camo and multi patter camo.
For camouflages i preffer a Play Doh. Its not sharp shape like maskol after all
i just ordered two bottles. Looking forward to less fiddling with masking tape!
Hello.
How to clean the brush ? With "white spirit" ? Acétone ?
Do I need to add water or any kind off thinner to or just apply straight from the bottle

get a cheap nylon bristled paint brush and cut the hairs short then use it gently scrub the flaky bits off. GENTLY NOW!
Excellent product Humbrol such an inspiration to modelling.
My bottle of Maskol is solid rubber. I tried using water to reactivate/thin the product to no avail. Any suggestions?
Buy a new bottle, that one was not properly sealed and dried up.
great product will try this on canopies
Great project, makes like so easy by the looks of things! Great! Cheers, Jack
wow cool stuff, but boy that smell is horrible!
How do you get soft paint lines like on aircraft if masking with a liquid mask?
I'm not sure if you can do that? I'd be curious myself. I think you would need to offset the masking off the surface to make that effect happen.
Bloody brilliant! This may make me a better modeler!!
Can't wait to get some know to use on my shipping contains for deadzone

Have you tried Copydex??.
