I told my mother that I wanted to be stoic like Coach Grant she yelled at me; "why would you want to be like that???!!! I would have been so helpful to have grown up with a parent who 'got it'. These guys 'get it'.
When I was a kid playing baseball I scratched up my arm pretty good. My coach came over and saw I was upset and just said “eh you’re fine just rub some dirt on it, chicks dig scars”. Instantly I felt cool and it was so stupid and insignificant but I still use that mentality today when I fuck up “just rub some dirt on it, you’ll be better off and stronger because this happened”
After my first jiu jitsu class I had a normal face the rest of the day just because nothing really bothered me.. but I felt so relaxed even looking people in the eye at red lights just to see their eyes and they would look away but even when I got to work I was helping a customer who I couldn’t help but my normal calm face introduced better ideas in my head and I actually made him feel like he got good customer service something he didn’t get 5 min prior to me. This guy was being compliant, but still you need to stay in the game. This guy looked at me and after a long pause said, "You look tired". He said it plainly and without threat, which was almost more scary. I immediately took inventory of myself, my posture, facial expression - and learned from that lesson. Such an important lesson and something to work on. As I'm very competitive I can get frustrated and show that outwardly as a release without thinking about the implications to the rest of the team.
I love the concept!!! I am working to get better at it in more situations. I would think the goal is more of a fake it until you make it concept. So eventually you really are that calm and confident on the inside. If you run into a stressful situation or obstacles to a goal then you get to the point where like water running downhill hill you just automatically begin thinking of alternate means of getting there. Then the outdo match the inside. The ultimate goal. 😎
A lot of people do things to people for a reaction like bullies but if you show no face then your giving them no food to feed off, they will try harder but as long as you don't feed them they will move on , i would of thought poker players do this often so as to not show the opposition there hand as it is the same thing, i think 90% of communication between people starts with watching facial expressions, it let's you know if your on the right track to either carry on or to stop and change your approach.

One night I was going to meet my friend at the gym and I was walking to my car across the street. It was dark and when I was stepping off the road onto the sidewalk there was this miniature curb before the normal curb that I hadn't seen. I hit my toe onto the mini curb and I planted hard onto the sidewalk. I first landed on my knee, when the palm of my hand, and finally my eyebrow hit a third curb. I cut open my eyebrow (no bleeding strangely). I don't usually cry when I get injured but I hit so hard that I had this very strong impulse to cry and, to my amazement, the feeling quickly past. I realized right there that if someone was around to say "Oh my gosh, are you OK?" and show other signs of concern, I would have started crying. I'd always remembered how interesting that was and so Echo's story about his son's fall totally makes sense. FYI- After the fall I considered going home but then I was like "No, I'm meeting my friend at the gym." I got up and with a limp in my step and a huge swollen eyebrow, I went to the gym. I did power walking with my friend and it was hard to keep up with her (my friend is a superb power walker) and I was afraid I might cause more damage to my knee. But my knee actually got better. I think the power walking actually helped. Walking it off is an actual thing I guess.
This makes me think of Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan, after something harrowing happens that shakes him he knows he has to remain a leader, takes himself away from his team be himself and deal with his emotions (he cries violently) then once he's done he recomposes himself and returns to his team to do what he has to do.
There was a picture in the paper of our wrestling coach talking to team after practice and everyone was on a knee but I was laid out spread eagle on my back lol. In my defense it was after hours of practice but when he said "You look a little tired" and walked away I laughed so hard.
When ever my boy climbs up on something and gets "stuck" and cant figure out how to get down, i tell him "you got yourself in this situation you get yourself out." It always work out in the end.
On his first and second run to the title? At any rate, his story is why I love boxing. It's like military history where eventually someone figures out the upstart after they've demonstrated their playbook in enough battles. Ali knew to wear down young George Foreman, who was used to pummeling guys mercilessly for a few rounds. Old Foreman took that lesson to heart when he came to get his title back. He knew the young buck Michael Morer would slip up eventually and he could hammer him. One hook in the tenth round was all it took for him to get the KO. He had been biding his time waiting for that opening.
I went to the same small high school from 1st to 12th grade and me and my friends basically from 1st to 12 grade would play a game we called "straight face contest" I have no idea who started it where it started when or why 😂 but all the time in school sports anything we would walk up to eachother in random times and just say "straight face contest ready go" and the person initiating the contest is at advantage because he knows its coming and the surprise attack victim is at a severe disadvantage and we would try to do it at random serious times like in the middle of football games or right before the bell was about to ring and we would probably get a detention for being late to class and we all got so good at it it became kind of a thing to us of like relaxation and eye rolling so it kinda became like a calming effect like taking someone's mind off a big moment they may be stressed about and it grounded us in some big moments sometimes 😂 not to say its like some kind of life changing tool or tactic or anything but to this day I can keep a straight face through literally everything now and I even played it with some guys at basic training in the army a couple years ago and it was a nice little time wasting game... btw im currently an E-4 SPC 12B combat engineer trying to train up for sapper school sometime soon when I make SGT then possibly try my hand at SFAS one day. I do the same when my kids have had bad injuries when they were young. You have to stay calm and composed. If you're a young child in pain and see your dad who's meant to be your symbol of masculinity, your hero and he's panicking, you as a child are going to be terrified.
@@Chris-zx1ez which is why i told off my mother when she berated my father for showing no emotion visualy when my grandmother died.
He was the only thing keeping me from doing something increadably stupid as an unstable teenange
I turn everything up to 11.
So i use my "O face" as my normal face.
Underated comment
I needed to hear this, it's my Monday & it's ben a sort of stressful day at work. I have to put on "normal face" all the damn time with these different CNAs and resident aides I had to deal with.
I have perma natural face. I picked it up in the military and have not let it go. People at work always comment that “you look so calm all the time” 😂. I tell them there is no Situation that needs me to look stressed out
Me: "Jocko, My life is a mess: No money, family, friends or hope. What should I do?"
Jocko: "PRACTICE JIU JITSU!"
Yeah that did ronda rousey a lot of good against holly holm
And don’t forget she had the gracies and gene le bell teaching her,
Your comment doesnt follow the context of what you responded to.
McBurgle jui hits is what I’m referring to which when I watched was mentioned,
It’s mentioned as the answer to everything in a lot of his podcasts, I’m pointing out it didn’t do rousey any good,
If you’re struggling with anything else don’t hesitate to ask
My lack of normal face is my Achilles's heel. Or my Echo's ankle, if you will.

Man to have this man as a boss
Jocko doesn’t show negative emotions, he just eagerly shakes a switchblade and points it at Echo
Who are these 8 people that immediately watch a Jocko video right when it comes out only to dislike it? I'd genuinely like to know.
Likers from Australia
Jocko spitting knowledge with a knife in his hand. 😎
Jocko with the blade out again. Love it!
you guys are the best! thank you! God bless you!
It never fully materialised until now, the notion that tired-looking people trigger mild disgust.
you never played competitive sports, right?
you have never been tired in your life?
This is why the samurai never show exhaustion.
You sound like weak man. I guess you're unfamiliar with hard labor and athletics then.
The match isnt harder than practice.
Truthful and hella funny!!! Great job guys!!
He’s just waving that knife around the whole video😂
Picturing jocko bopping his kids with a cardboard tube 😂
“Buckle your seatbelts now!!!” 🤣🤣🤣
I've been told I look angry all the time. I'm not usually so I guess that's my normal face.
Normal face is a must at my work...keeps the the bs to a minimum as I don't look very approachable.
FoereaperGaming Same. It might be my Scottish side.
resting war face I call it
Same. I just have a stoic demeanor. Got fired for it once.

How was that in any way gay?
This makes me think of Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan, after something harrowing happens that shakes him he knows he has to remain a leader, takes himself away from his team be himself and deal with his emotions (he cries violently) then once he's done he recomposes himself and returns to his team to do what he has to do.
I can absolutely see Jocko driving down the road raging out to some metal
The buckle your seatbelts now part was hilarious
For women make-up really helps to make you look less tired as our skin reacts more to fatigue, nervousness anger... Especially if you are white.
and then you sweat and break out bc of the makeup LOOOOL!
Good to hear. My kids always got up by themselves after a fall.
Solid advice and perspective ! Thank you for sharing !
i imagine i would wake up as Superman if I would put Jocko's podcast under my pillow at night
There was a picture in the paper of our wrestling coach talking to team after practice and everyone was on a knee but I was laid out spread eagle on my back lol. In my defense it was after hours of practice but when he said "You look a little tired" and walked away I laughed so hard.
Just recently subscribed. My kind of people.
Jocko writes his words with a knife
When ever my boy climbs up on something and gets "stuck" and cant figure out how to get down, i tell him "you got yourself in this situation you get yourself out." It always work out in the end.
"Man, your letting everybody down"
*waves around switchblade*
Jocko = Total Super Alpha
I think even UA-cam is afraid to scrub any jocko videos!
Please tell me because RBF is keeping me in trouble lol
so am i saying to not be your self?...YES I AM haha
A lot of people say that like it is something wrong you don't want to be yourself you want to be the most atractive and best version of yourself
I liked that comment THE MOST. Most of the time, our natural reaction is So Wrong. Jocko Knows.
ER nurses are pro at this. Talking in the locker room later the other faces show up.
i feel thats some quality parenting advice thank you
George Foreman did not sit down between rounds when he became heavy weight champion
Echos all nervous now that Jacko is waving that knife around
Keep on keeping on my military brothers ✊
The “guns” on Echo Charles...jesus
He said "ACT Normal"
Thank you so much for this.
yo what is going on with Echo's biceps. Are those scars or tattoos? or what?
I think his biceps are trying to burst out from his flesh.
I searched the comments to see if anyone else noticed that too lol wth
T-Mass tattoo
@Anthony Blue I highly doubt it. It looks like a combination of lighting, scar tissue, and low body fat.
Sweat or stretch marks
People will try to get you to react...if you do..they are controlling you...if you dont react it aggravates them to no end
What do you invest in? My thing is agriculture and flipping currently
I’ve been told I have a “poker face” as just my Normal look even by people I meet for the first time only been talking to for 5 seconds. A stern serous poker face.
Jocko : Good
