- This video explains how I noticed Joey needed to be taken to the vet for his heart disease diagnosis. It’s important to catch symptoms early so treatment can start as soon as possible.
Thank you Courtney and Joey for sharing such an informative video. There is not enough of this kind of information (ferret illnesses and what to look for) out there. Having and sharing a video of what the labored breathing looked like is great! I can't thank you both enough for sharing your story it's going to help so many ferrents out there💚
@jakalfoshakal thank you for your sweet comment! It is my goal to help educate people on this topic to hopefully improve the lives of ferrets everywhere. Thank you for watching my video!
Thank you so much for sharing! Just noticed this in my older ferret yesterday. We will be going to the vet asap❤
Oh no I hope your baby is okay! Good job paying attention to the signs. ❤
Feed tourine supplement and save his life
It's caused by a poor diet lacking in taurine
If the food you are feeding has legumes in it which prevent taurine absorption
Grain free food kills animals all predators so it will kill your dog and your ferret
Joey is such a sweet boy
My first ferret was also named Joey. I didn't know much about ferrets then. Well a long story short Joey turned out to have congestive heart failure. What the vet told me was that Joey was very tiny and usually that means that they're born with it. He was only 2 years old and he didn't make it to two and a half. I miss him very much!Seems to be very common in male ferrets.
Yay I am getting ferrets soon and I want to give them the best life possible
You are incredible
Help full
Sad that on 2016 there is no such informative video on UA-cam. And we suffered with Thai Vets who know nothing about ferrets and was absolulelly helpless. If i could see this video THIS time - it can help me -(((
My gorgeous boy has the same condition, he’s on meds but his cough has recently come back and it’s breaking my heart.
I only noticed how ill he was when he was hours away from death, previously vets had believed that the cough was a furball. Within 3 weeks of beginning treatment he was back to his usual self and I’ve had another 6 months - so far - with him. Next week we will be returning to the vets to adjust his meds.
I wish I had seen a video like this months ago.
Ellie Bird I am sorry your sweet boy has this too! I’m glad you were able to get him on meds and will be adjusting soon. I’ve had to adjust twice so far. I wish you both the best.
You have really helped me and I am calling one joey
Milly Devenney awwww yay!
Joey is so cute
Dani Nino thank you!
I love my ferret
Thanx Courtney for the information it is nice to know wat to look for, meanly because ferrets are exelent to do as if nothing is wrong. I will look out for signs like this whit my ferret.
Thank you so much!
Mellissa Theunisz you’re welcome!
I love my ferret, he's 5 and his name is scrappy
Yay you upload
Courtney, while watching the video I noticed Joey was shaking from hands to tail
Lily Kelly yes. Ferrets do that sometimes. It’s normal.
Ty so much I think my poor baby has the same thing to!!!! Nooo I’m so disappointed :( hes heavy breathing and fast breathing I’m so worried
He is so big what do you feed him?
what does it mean when a ferret spins in circles and looks confused and is uneven when it walks
my life girls when you say confused does your ferret seem to stare off into space and wobble while doing so? Could be early signs of insulinoma :(
thank you
I noticed my ferret breathing like this and I have an appointment for him on Monday. Should I find somewhere else that I can take him sooner? He still eats and plays but he lounges around a lot
If he is eating, pooping, and playing then I think it’s ok to wait until Monday. If he becomes lethargic, not eating/drinking, or is coughing a lot, you’d want to take him sooner. You’re the best judge of how your ferret is compared to his normal activity so if things really change from his normal behavior be sure to call the vet.
He is lethargic but he eats and poops normal. He’s sleeping a lot. He will lay in one spot but then he moves to another spot and lay there. He repeats that. I take him out to hold him but try not to do too much movement. How much did everything cost for the medicine
Hi, I'm in interested in getting a ferret and at the moment I can only afford one. I know that they do better In pairs but I'd like to know your opinion on only getting one ferret instead of two! I understand that I'd have to spend more attention to the ferret, and I will. But I just wanted to know what you thought!
It all depends on the ferret. Some prefer to be on their own, others prefer groups and can suffer from depression if separated. I would strongly recommend going to a rescue or pet shop that has lots of ferrets so you don't end up separating ones that have strong ties already. If they have loads of ferrets, chances are there will be a bunch that prefer to be alone.
Did the meds keep the fluid from building in his abdominals? I know once the meds were maxed out u had to bring him every 2 1/2 weeks to drain but did the meds keep u from having to do that until he was maxed out on meds or did u always have to drain the liquid?
Yes, the meds were able to be adjusted to keep the fluid from building until a certain point. It worked for a long while. Once the meds were maxed out we had to drain the fluid.
@@TheTrainedFerret ty for getting back to me. Ur a good teacher bc I had it correct. Great info. I literally booked an appt for my boy bc of your awareness.
@@usmc72409 please let me know how the appointment goes. I wish the best for you both!
@@TheTrainedFerret i will do that. Ty for ur concern. Hes my oldest ferret. 6 right now. I couldnt figure out why he was getting so fat in his belly. And recently noticed he breathes much faster than my 41/2 year old and the baby when he sleeps. I thought it was just bc hes fat. I cut back his food over the last month and he hasnt lost weight. So i began to play google/youtube vet. Ur video was extremely helpful.
@@TheTrainedFerret my 4 1/2 year old loki has a slightly enlarged heart but vet said not to worry about it. All i have done is worry about it!
I think my ferret has the same thing. How much did all that cost?
Hey, I'm looking at this now too and I noticed that you're the only one to comment pretty recently. Let's figure this out together because I'm pretty scared for my baby
So I did manage to take him in. He started off with a cough and then 2 days later her was breathing funny. He was still eating, peeing and pooping fine. But he was very lethargic and laying around. The vet said that he has the flu or pneumonia. The cost was $92.92
That was the visit, his 2 shots. One shot was to open up his lungs and I forgot what the other shot was for. She also put him on antibiotics that he has to take twice a day. She also said that I can give him breathing treatments being that I have the machine/albuterol at the house(due to my daughter having asthma and cystic fibrosis).
How expensive is the medication?
For me they gave me another one and it’s $35 but I heard if u ask for the script u can go to the pharmacy and get it cheaper
Poor little guy is shivering so. It is very cold down there now?
Mary Ellen Byrne no. He was excited over salmon oil.
What about hiccups when upset?
And how old is he?
Joey passed away in April of 2019. He was 7 years old.
