ok, so i want to see video evidence of this. not cause i dont believe you. because this is so awesome. (but really upload this to your YT channel please(reply back when you did))
I've followed your videos/steps since i got my ferrets a week ago and every things been great. What helped me with one of my ferrets knowing there name is combining the step of them coming to me and just saying their name at the same time. now all i say is "hobbes come here" and she knows to come to me everytime
Guess I trained mine by accident, I potty trained him and beyond that he was free roaming but went everywhere with me so he was always by my side! Some police in my town had selfies with him, he was popular at the convience store. Dam I miss him. Rip Sammy. Ferrets are awesome. Keep up the educational videos!
No its not bad if you start saying "come" right from the beginning. That should work also. I just like to get Joey to perform the behavior first, then I add the verbal command/hand signal. That is easier for me, but there is nothing wrong with what you're saying.
A really useful and insightful video! I have 3 new little boys, still in their "squirmy" stage, but starting to pick up on things. They recognise when we have treats, as we shake the bags, and they are actually starting to recognise their names. Making a sharp clicking noise before and after using their names as I pick them up seems to be working, but I defo wanna give this tactic a go!
I have tried to trained my ferret Calcifer on my own but she never listens, so distractable, but today it worked for the first time after useing this method!
I haven't tried teaching this trick before.....mainly because Joey loves to jump off of things and I'm afraid he'll hurt himself. I hope when he gets older he won't jump so much and I can teach him. If your ferret is clicker trained then I would sit on a couch - or something else soft and put your ferret on your shoulder. When he shows signs of holding on or being still on your shoulder, click your clicker. Over time he should learn that is what you want.
You could try rewarding with toys but I personally haven't done that. Both of my ferrets that I have trained have been so food motivated I haven't had to try other options. Let me know if it works! You could also try mixing the treat into his kibble for a few days to see if he tries it that way.
if you're treats are healthy (meat treats like I mentioned in my video about what treats to give) then I would give them freely during a 5-10 min training session. You would still need to break them into really small portions but it should be fine for just a few minutes. I wouldn't give anymore than that throughout the day.
You should do a "day in the life of joey" so we can see your daily routine! I've seen another video on youtube like that and it was really interesting. Thanks for all your videos they are really helpful! : )
I wouldn't worry about the not staying still part, that is just a normal baby ferret :O) I would be concerned about the diarrhea. I am not a vet, but I have heard that green diarrhea can be a symptom of ECE (epizootic catarrhal enteritis) I would contact a ferret knowledgeable vet in your area and let them check out your ferret as soon as you can! If you live in the US, you can look for a ferret vet on ferret.org. There is a link on there on the left hand column.
I don’t have a clicker. But I have a high pitch squeaker that then come too. I basically did the same thing as you did just with a different sound. I believe this is the most important thing to teach your ferret.
I start training for using the litter box and not biting right as soon as I get a new baby ferret. As far as tricks and other stuff I usually wait until they're about 6 months. I'm sure you could do it younger, it just might be even more of a challenge :O)
....Joey gets a bath about once a month and I wash his bedding once a week. Too many baths can make their bodies overproduce that musky scent and actually make it worse! Washing the bedding often is the key in my opinion :O)
i did this but he ran off and hid the food. Should i he concerned? i knkw other ferrets.use to be mean to him so im thinking they jjst took his food and that's why he does that?
Catherine Okamura ferret love to hide things! It's normal behavior. If you're trying to train him just use a smaller room so he can't take it as far and will hopefully stay more focused
My ferrets name is nugget! I absolutely love her and I try to stay patient when I train her But the most cutest thing she does is when she accidentally scratches me she will lick my scratch. But I have a question: can you trim your ferrets nails? (I don’t want to do it myself but can I go somewhere do to it?) and then also is there a way to calm them when you hold them? She scratches my arms and I’m trying to teach her to calm down but idk what to do 😅
I like the clicker idea! Mine come when I make a tapping noise on my lap...unless they are zonked out. No training was required. And of course they come running to squeaky toys. Another tip....don't force your ferret to stay in your arms when they want down. Ferrets like their freedom and they get bored so so easily! My daughter would force ours to "cuddle" when they didn't want to and now they start trying to get away the second she handles them because they associate her with being restrained against their will. I put them down almost as soon as they start getting squirmy and they trust me/cuddle with me much more for it. Also make sure every time you call them it isn't to put them up in their cage or to do something they don't like. Sometimes call them to give them a treat or to play. That way they don't associate being called with something negative.
Its not mean to want another pet, but you have to really think about the welfare of each pet. Ferrets are actually predators since they eat meat and therefore might hurt the gerbils. Ferrets are actually used to hunt rabbits in other countries! I don't think it would be a good idea to have both, but if you decide to just be sure there is no way that the ferret could get near the gerbil cage. Ferrets are smart and may figure out how to open the cage themselves!
joey, im from brazil and here there arent ferrets, im leaning and searching for a long time how to get one from usa , can you help me somehow ? thank you
+Joey TheTrainedFerret I was wondering if how can you go outside with your ferret without a leash , and have it properly trained staying on your shoulder or something . Because I've seen it before and I was wondering how can you teach that
+Jojo Cross its never safe to do that. ferrets should always be onleash outside cause they can get scared and take off. there's always a chance at losing a pet that is not contained or restrained whether it be in a cage or on a leash.
@Joey The Trained Ferret what kind of treats do you use? I have treats for my ferret but he doesn’t seem to like them. Did this happen to your ferret too, I am a little worried?
YoseMiteEmery you can use small pieces of chicken you personally cut up and put it in a container. Or you could just buy treats from the Wysong Ferret company. But the cheaper one is find meat in your refrigerator or the freezer. Just make sure you warm it up just a little not too hot and to where it’s not too cold
I've had my ferret for about a month now. I've tried two different types of treats (Wild Harvest Ferret Bites grilled chicken flavor and N-Bone Chew Treats bacon flavored) and my guy Oskie barely even acknowledges the treats and won't even eat them when I mix it in with his food bowl. Do you know a type of treat that I might be successful with? Another question I have is that I often hear about using lickable treats to keep your ferret occupied, what types of lickable treats can I give Oskie that he will enjoy? Thanks
Alex Baynes First throw away those treats. They are toxic and will lead to insulinoma. Ferrets are obligate carnivores meaning they can only process raw meat. Anything else causes them to overproduce insulin which burns out their pancreas leading to death. I suggest switching to a raw diet and using bits of chicken as a treat. As a good lickable you can use a drop of fish or salmon oil. Commercial products like ferratone are toxic. And peanut butter causes insulinoma.
Hi, I’ve commented on your videos prior to getting my first ferret.... well now I own a 8 week old male ferret. My issue is he has NO interest in treats.... Is he maybe too young ?? I am working on really bonding with him right now. He does seem to recognize his name to a extent
It’s totally fine. He’s so young and may start to like them later or you can just use his regular food for training like I do for Simon. Bonding is definitely the best thing to work on!
I love your videos I have a question I have one male ferret and im getting hem a friend can I get a baby? I don't know how old rascal is he was a rescue my geuss and 2 or 3
you can make a sound with your mouth, get a different clicker (because different makes and models have slightly different sounds they make) or use a squeaky toy. It doesn't really matter what the sound is as long as it's easy for you to make right when they're doing something good!
Actually it doesn't really need to be a clicker. We only use clicker because its easy. If your gonna let your ferret learn that the click sound (Or whistle of something) is a rewarding sound, always try to immediately and gently give the ferret a treat, not long than 5 or 6 seconds cause it might forget what it have done.
How do you train if your ferret has no interest in treats? They've been exposed to anything from bought treats to raw chicken, turkey.. even raw squirrel meats but no interest on anything but store bought food. I don't want to overuse ferretone or ferret lax. Do you have any ideas on what could be done as a praise technique? Thanks!
theclanplus1 thats a tough one as I have only had ferrets that were food driven. Is there a toy they really like or maybe just cuddles and praise? I haven't ever trained that way but would be interested to know if it works. Whatever reward is given, it has to be immediately after the desired behavior.has been completed.
Well, finished training one of my little females to roll over. She loves to mock play. I got her into a small room and when she got fully into rough housing I rolled her over with one hand and made a spinning signal with the other. A few times into it and started the voice command. Since she was in such a deep play, and sense of excitement, she picked it up very fast, and no treat involved. Now her attention can be on other things and I give her a signal and command and she rolls over. She's apparently relating the act of rolling over with excitement and fun, so she does it. Of course, she gets excited when asked to do this.. but it doesn't seem so much that she goes into a play state. Works for me! Haha yeah I know.. I used to be a dog/wolf trainer about 6yrs ago! It just took a little while to get into the ferrets' minds :) Thank you for the reply! I hope this reply will help you try new ways of training also! Take care!
hi Courtney, im gonna get a ferret soon, and so is my sister. i was wondering would it be better if they are brother and sister? does it matter at all? and we are going to get them at the same time, and we were wondering if it would be easier for them to get used to us if they are together the first few days. also, i have four siblings, and two of them are below eight years old. should we train our ferrets not to bite before we introduce them? and sorry, four more questions. so first, my little brother is going to get a hamster. would it be dangerous for the hamster to be around the ferrets? are ferrets ok with traveling in the car for two hours? how old do ferrets have to be to be adopted? and finally, do ferrets like daily walks to the park? thank you, and sorry... i just want to be ready and for my future ferret to have a happy life, and hopefully the hamster too...
It doesn't matter if they are brother and sister. I would train them some before being around the younger kids too much. Please do NOT let a ferret and a hamster around each other. Ferrets are carnivores and instinct tells them to hunt rodents. Ferrets are great travelers in the car - 2 hrs should be fine as long as they are in a crate. Age of adoption depends on who is selling the ferrets. My breeder wouldnt sell Joey until he was 11-12 wks. Ferrets like being out on short walks so as long as the temperature isn't too hot for them (above 80) it should be fine. They get heat stroke easily. Random info - recliners and stow away beds are very dangerous for ferrets bec they can climb up inside and get caught in the mechanisms.
Contessa Morcello yes I only have one ferret. I feel that if you have enough time one on one with your ferret each day that you dedicate to him then it's ok. Also you need to be able to afford the ferret you have. I want to be able to give Joey everything he needs. I wanted to have the best food and vet care and I don't know if I could do that if I had two.
sorry, in the movie you said that you weren't say anything yet. so i was wondering is it bad to call them right when you start training them that trick
Hi we have a cinnamon / sugar ferret who is about 5 months old . She is constantly biting . I don't want my daughter terrified of her. She is out of the cage all the time when we are home. How can we eliminate some of the biting ?
I named my ferret Kobe and all I have to do is yell "AY YO KOBE!" and he comes running to me like Kobe Bryant runs after the ball!
idonteatcheetos That is absolutely amazing! XD
idonteatcheetos that's fye af

This was so helpful! And cute, Joey is adorable.(:
When you sounded angry, all I could hear was you still being wholesome 😂
Guess I trained mine by accident, I potty trained him and beyond that he was free roaming but went everywhere with me so he was always by my side! I used to just crinkle his treat bag and hed come running :) if he was sleeping this also worked for me :)
phantomalex777
That's how my Ferret is!
Teach Joey to stop having ants n his pants. 😂 lol. Seriously u do a really good job with Joey. All ferrets want to explore. It's in there nature.
No its not bad if you start saying "come" right from the beginning. That should work also. I just like to get Joey to perform the behavior first, then I add the verbal command/hand signal. That is easier for me, but there is nothing wrong with what you're saying.
awesome videos. I wish more people knew as much as you about these wonderful pets!
I need you in my life with that ferret training-!!☹️

Where did you get the clicker and what treats do you use. Just started watching your channel and I love it, very informative
Subscribed! I am so excited to be getting a ferret in a few months once I save up the money. I will definitely use your videos to help train him! (:
Ikr, im getting my own ferrets in two months! Soooo exciting!
he is gorgeous!
omg loved this cant wait to teach my ferret all of your amazing tricks

Love all of your videos you should have 500 billion subs ^.^
Joey loves him some ferrotone. 😂
just make sure you don't give them too much ferrotone it has ingredients that can cause cancer but salmon oil is a much better healthier choice

Joey is so adorable! Was he from a private breeder or a farm? I am currently looking for a kit
my ferret won't listen to me.. how do I know if she is deaf. she won't acknowledge anything I say. not even patting the floor
Aki take your ferret to the vet to see if she dear or not

My ferret comes to me when I hit the floor continuously, XD.
Same
Same
i recently got a ferret. She is three months old and is super hyper #HYPE
how many times would you guess you used the clicker before verbal commanding.
joey, im from brazil and here there arent ferrets, im leaning and searching for a long time how to get one from usa , can you help me somehow ? thank you
how does one help to get rid of fleas or tics ?
What do you Use as treats for Joey, Sorry if you have already covered it in another video. My little guys wont eat any of the treats from petco.
I’ve followed you for so long and appreciate joeys videos, now I’ve finally got a ferret and ruby now knows her name !! Ty
Congrats!! ❤️
I got my ferret Tuesday (3 days ago) and she's 6 weeks old. Looking forward to training her! :)
Maria Crazydawn yay!
Joey TheTrainedFerret I'm getting a ferret today
Maria Crazydawn I got mine yesterday he's so awesome
Maria Crazydawn ferrets should be sold at 8 weeks cause they need to learn stuff from their mum :)
Is the ferret bonding process the same with all Ferrets? Roughly, how long would it take to have my ferret bonding with me?
what do you give Joey for treats and what is his regular food
I want to buy a ferret too!Is it a best pet
what do you use if you don't have a clicker? how much are the clickers at petco and what are the costs of treats and that bottle stuff you used
I got you fam bfy.tw/7LnE

@Joey The Trained Ferret what kind of treats do you use? I have treats for my ferret but he doesn’t seem to like them. Did this happen to your ferret too, I am a little worried?
What type of treat do you use?
It'sAsira Ferret tone
I love these videos!! they have helped me so much with my baby ferret! thank you!!
What treats do you use?
YoseMiteEmery you can use small pieces of chicken you personally cut up and put it in a container. Or you could just buy treats from the Wysong Ferret company.
But the cheaper one is find meat in your refrigerator or the freezer. Just make sure you warm it up just a little not too hot and to where it’s not too cold

I got my ferret marceline yesterday shes had a few accidents. where would i get a clicker?
what are the best treats to use to training ferrets?
How do I teach my ferret to stop biting?
How many treats should you give a ferret each day?
I just got a ferret and i am having a hard time with putting on a collar since she's so tiny would there be anything else i could use.
thank you. i have just one more question. would it be better for the two ferrets to be in the same cage or would it not change anything?
ferrets are social and do really well in a cage together.
ok, thank you
Its best to own two. Even if you are unable to play with them they need that social/emotional interaction.
Hi Joey and cortney I am a huge fan and was wondering if u can do a video about how to get you parents to let u get a ferret. Thx
Can you make a video about how do ferrets take a bath?
Any tips for a Multi ferret household (18)
what do you use if you don't have a clicker though?
Hi, I’ve commented on your videos prior to getting my first ferret.... well now I own a 8 week old male ferret. My issue is he has NO interest in treats.... Is he maybe too young ?? I am working on really bonding with him right now. He does seem to recognize his name to a extent

mine is also a mutant like this lool
Why do ferrets run so cute im literally dyeing send help (jk just a cutness overload)
Same it's so cute
he is so freaking cute omg
Can you restate your question? I'm not sure what you're asking.
What treat stuff do u give him?
Joey is huge!!!!!!!!
I named my ferret joey too as it is another ancient name for a clown made me laugh from first day I got him pulls on my heart strings
I love your videos I have a question I have one male ferret and im getting hem a friend can I get a baby? I don't know how old rascal is he was a rescue my geuss and 2 or 3
what kinda of treats do you use for joey. i jusy got a ferret and doenst like the treats i got him.
What if your ferret is scared of the clicker? what should you use to replace that?
You can try clicking a pen
you can make a sound with your mouth, get a different clicker (because different makes and models have slightly different sounds they make) or use a squeaky toy. It doesn't really matter what the sound is as long as it's easy for you to make right when they're doing something good!

Can you use FerretVite in place of FerreTone?
Ferretvite has sugar in it, which is really bad for them
Ciao Sebastian so does ferretone
can I use ferret tone as a treat
What bottle did u use for ferret tone
What are the treats you are using?
What do you feed Joey because my farret started to have disinterest in her dry food
I love joey's furry cloves! LOL So cute!
My ferret is deaf, is there any good tip how to communicate with him to better teach him since i cant use sounds

Random info - recliners and stow away beds are very dangerous for ferrets bec they can climb up inside and get caught in the mechanisms.
one thing if u take your ferret on a walk and u put him or her on the grass can they get sick and have dieases.
do you only have one ferret? because I only want one but every one says you need two
Contessa Morcello yes I only have one ferret. I feel that if you have enough time one on one with your ferret each day that you dedicate to him then it's ok. Also you need to be able to afford the ferret you have. I want to be able to give Joey everything he needs. I wanted to have the best food and vet care and I don't know if I could do that if I had two.
What if your ferret does not like treats? I have tried a couple of different types of ferret treats and boiled chicken and he is just not interested.
Is it mean to want a ferret if you already have a pet? Would it also work having a ferret if u hav 2 gerbils
Where do you get the clicker
sorry, in the movie you said that you weren't say anything yet. so i was wondering is it bad to call them right when you start training them that trick
Hi we have a cinnamon / sugar ferret who is about 5 months old . She is constantly biting . I don't want my daughter terrified of her. She is out of the cage all the time when we are home. How can we eliminate some of the biting ?
Kim Brown pick her up by the scruff gently every time he bites or nips and he should stop eventually
