This didn't seem to explain how to beat overeating. It just explained the mechanism why people could be overeating.
You should eat healthy when eat unhealthy food the more you desire food full of fats and sugar "overeating"
Amani Abu Laban
People know this. It doesn't help. It's like: you know smoking is bad for you, you shouldn't smoke! And yet, people still smoke. We know the mechanisms. Knowing the mechanisms does not enable people to beat them.
+JE Hoyes At the end he says the more unhealthy food you eat the more you want it so eat less unhealthy food and you will eat less of it in the future
+JE Hoyes smoking is literally the same thing over here the more you smoke the more you desire cigarettes , so when you eat healthy the chances of you overeating gets lower. and when you eat foods that are high in sugar and fats it leads you to overeating simple as that :)
+StruckOne That usually leads to fasting and bingeing. As I said. we all know the mechanisms, we all know we should and want to eat less fatty sugary foods. The mechanism is the very thing that makes humans fail when they choose to eat less fat and sugar. Addictions are not simple things to break even if someone knows they are addicted.
A diet needs to be lifelong in order to stand a chance of working. Most people with access to abundant rich foods can not help but fall off the wagon. This is no longer as much of an issue for me because I have altered my diet for moral reasons and the image of cruelty is enough to keep me away from the primary sources of unreasonably rich foods. Also, it's virtually impossible to find any vegan fast food on the high street.
A solution to the obesity problem worldwide is very simple
Reduce the price of healthy food and increase the price of junk food
I can get a whole trolley full of junk food for less than $30A (enough to keep me fed and happy for a week)
But for the same $30A I can get enough food that is healthy and balanced to last me maybe 1 day (2 if I am really lucky)
Can you see the problem here?
Not sure if you are serious or trolling?
***** it takes time and effort, but you can eat healthy for cheap. I have inflammatory bowel disease so grains, meats, dairy, oats, coconut and yeast are all off the table and I have a weekly food budget of $40. Do to my stomach I am limited to mostly whole foods. I get enough to supply a very physical job and still have weight I want to lose. It is tricky and your tastes have to adjust, but it can be done. Sweet potatoes are wonderful things :) Don't let packaging fool you-- they are all microwavable.
Perhaps but in Australia food that is considered healthy and balanced is rediculously expensive
***** Bravo. Bra-fucking-vo.
Way to like your own comment
Bravo to you for that one
But what if I overeat because I hate myself, is there a video that covers that
no
Oh well *eats chocolate until she thinks she's going to throw up, then after a few seconds of horror at realizing how much she's eaten, keeps eating*
nikoincroatia I'm sorry... Its a vicious cycle
Smøl Angel Bean I-/ Thanks. I'm working on it in therapy
Well that's just stupid and irrational
You really didn't give the answer
I stopped eating candy for a couple of weeks, and now I wanna puke any time I eat it. Sure I still enjoy it in very small portions but still…
Good for you. That is a good thing.
Same happened to me about chocolate
Same Belen's happening to me with Baked Goods since I was little.......something tells me I was never invited to many parties, thus not eating many Baked Goods.......:(
Same to happened to me about soda
same with kfc any fast food!
how about the science of binge eating?
We binge eat because we are in calorie deficit. Binge eating usually begins by feeling really hungry, often following a period of restriction. If we don't eat enough of each food group (most importantly, proteins, carbs, vegetables and fats) then our body decides that it needs calories and as many and quickly as possible. That's why we often reach for junk foods like chocolate, sweets, cakes etc. They are fast energy to restore the balance. Unfortunately, by the point we've started, we're so hungry that we continue past our natural hunger and fullness signals.
The best way to prevent binge eating is to eat regular and balanced meals. If you do binge, don't skip the next meal to compensate, as this can lead to a binge - starve cycle.
Hope that helps a bit!
ilikebacon it’s not really a health food though is it 😂
@ilikebacon I didn't say dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is fine in small amounts. Like anything, enjoy in moderation.
I'm watching this video while eating chocolate digestives... oh the irony
while i eat OREOS
Oreossssssss ❤️
SmartxGuyx420 well that was overly responsive and mean
talk shit on chocolate and get wrecked
Same !
at 0:44 if you look at the bottom left corner it looks like a person winking with a moustache and long hair
Can't see it
Omg yesssss!!!!.... now u can't unsee it
Lol, it does
oh i see it lmao
Jabriah Scott lol
Why do we almost always desire things or people that we can't have?
What we tried to emphasize is that eating unhealthy foods (those with very high fat and sugar content) can cause you to eat even more. They end up causing stronger cravings for food in the future. So one way to 'beat' this, is to change what types of foods you are eating. People who eat balanced and healthy meals end up being less hungry (in general). So think about the foods you eat. While fat and sugar are still important, in moderation, eat balanced meals. Stay tuned for more on this topic
How to beat it? First time you guys let me down a little. It might be implied but the title is still misleading. But most importantly; Why nothing about whether this is reversible? This just brings people down who might not have a very healthy diet. And if you can't reverse it and you just didn't want to mention it... Don't choose a title like that.
Love your content in general. Lots of love and support from Holland!
Bettine van der Galiën Dont worry, it is reversible. Just like with any addiction, the first few days or weeks you go without eating junk food are pretty gruelling, but as you get used to eating healthy you atop craving so much junk. You even realize that healthy food tends to be more filling after you get used to it.
A note: we emphasize that eating unhealthy foods (those with very high fat and sugar content) can cause you to eat even more. They end up causing stronger cravings for food in the future. So one way to 'beat' this, is to change what types of foods you are eating. People who eat balanced and healthy meals end up being less hungry (in general). So think about the foods you eat. Hey I am a teacher from Australia and have used many of your videos for pastoral, well being and general teaching. I would love to see a video on the importance of breakfast in the morning, as so many of my students skip breakfast and end up eating unhealthy throughout the day. - Thanks for all your videos they are awesome
There is a lot of information out there you can find about how to eat a healthy and balanced meal. They commonly involve a majority of fruits and vegetables along with a combination of all food groups. These meals are rich in the vitamins and nutrients your body will effectively metabolize to maintain health.
This video shows how our bodies ability to monitor appetite can be disrupted by eating high fat and high sugar diets. More videos to come about the science of health and nutrition.
Haha
Just remember, 1:) NO STARVING. Once you reintroduce food to your system, it will automatically be stored like fat instead of processed. 2:) Eat slow, so your body can process food, not store it. 3:) Water instead of juice or soda works well.
I know, not everyone can be in sports (I've been in gymnastics since a young age, and quit a couple years ago, it really can interfere with schoolwork, and get stressful), but, try to fit in maybe extra walks, work harder in P.E., etc.
That's all bs lmao
I'm on a diet right now and when I see sweets I just want them so badly.
+cute girl i was on a one week diet i gave up eating fruits and ddrinking water wasnt that fun
Who the hell gives up drinking water for a diet?
Christine put a period after up. then what she said makes more sense
A good thing to do, along with regular exercise, is to eat your meals slower, so your metabolism doesn't freak out at the sudden intake of calories so quick, and stores it immediately. Eating in-between meals is good, but try to go for only a few apple slices, etc. instead of the whole apple (just an analogy), to prevent overeating during mealtime, and freaking out your metabolism again. Breakfast is essential, as well as drinking water as soon as you wake up. :)
speaking of eating, why are we told to eat three times a day. I wonder if there is a scientific reason
It just feels right, I don't wanna argue with that honestly
no. hunter gathers didn't have three regular meals everyday. we more likely went through periods of fasting and feeding, which makes sense bc fasting makes you live longer
Exactly, especially since some people need more and some need less
It is one of the best videos about over eating I ever seen !
The brain needs about 20 minutes to recive impulse from our stomach we are full, so the cruicial is to eat slow to not overeat.
I got a question. Why do people relate a scent to a characteristic? For example, a perfume scent is described as 'sweet', when in reality, it tastes bitter. Another example is men fragrance. How can we smell something and relate it to the strong, manly characteristics of men?
It's related to sexual attraction, a woman who smells nice to a man will appear to be a good mate, giving off healthy offspring to pass down their genes.
It’s called synesthesia
Totally awesome, and very informative. Can you do a video on AD/HD? And one on how immunizations work? Looking forward to learning more.
I'm so happy i found a tool to help me control my hunger and urges. Helped me lose 30 lbs, keep it off, and i feel like I'm no longer a slave to the mass marketing of sugar, fast food, and countless other unhealthy options being pushed out there
10yrs too late but what was your tool
I love all your videos! The way you make your videos just makes me show interest!
Yay! This was my question, I'm so happy they done it :D I have been wondering this for years!
congrats
This video makes me nostalgic for the old leptin argument days. Increasing leptin was thought of as a way to prevent overeating. However, after 4 weeks the body acclimates to the increased amount and dulls its own leptin receptors (kinda like insulin resistance). Makes me wish I would have stocked up on Leptigen back in the day (claimed to be a leptin receptor sensitizer). Oh well.
Could you do a video about different types of metabolism, and if you have a fast one is it still OK to eat lots of food? And vice versa? Thanks guys, love the videos :)
My dad and I have been doing this thing where we buy a bunch of healthy food on Sunday and make them into multiple meals that we can have during next week. It normally ends up being a lot cheaper than impulsive buying and it's good if you're the kind of person that wants to eat healthy but just doesn't have the time or the patients to make anything.
i honestly never understand what you say,but it is very fun to watch how you draw and how creative you could be!
im a normal weight and i have binge eating disorder i really would like to know more about how to help myself fight it
Can you do a video on effects of anorexia
This made my night.
@AsapSCIENCE can you explain in one of your videos about overeating while you are on cannabis and ways that you could potentially combat this issue? Thanks! Your videos are awesome! Keep them coming!
This video doesn't say ANYTHING about the topic - "How to beat overeating." Terrible job.
thought he said chose healthy and eat wisely then the craving will go down
He said if we eat healthier foods the desire to over eat would subside.
Irina Phoenix It does: Stop eating junk food, thats it!
Laobros it's not that easy??????? Lmfao, you know nothing
Ahiko_99 I may know nothing, but that's what the video says...
I want to know what sugar does to my brain and body. I want to know why excessive sugar is bad for you. Basically, I want to know everything about sugar so that I can make wiser decisions. Thank you :)
+Cesarina Lucarelli Thouin over-indulging on sugar can actually make your organs fat, specifically the liver, which is what causes the fatty liver disease, it can cause type-2 diabetes, wrecks havoc on your heart and actually causes accelerated aging, also, sugar is like cocaine, as it is an addictive substance and can cause you to lose focus, and feel sluggish for seemingly no reason.
I can tell you ^^ I learned this back a couple years ago in health class. You're stomache is a muscle that squeeses you're food to digest it. So when there is nothing there it is squeezing air, causeing it to make those growling sounds. ^^ Hoped this made sense :)
I had to re watch the video because I will to busy concentrating on the food the first time😂😂🙈
I dare you to do this challenge with me. don't eat your favorite treat for a month without failing and after that month eat it and see how much you like it. with me I don't really like it any more. I stopped eating cheese for a month and after that I had cheese and I felt like throwing up.
How do I know that I'm "full"? According to my family I tend to not eat enough, but I feel full. :/
This thumbnail is hilarious, I thought it meant “beat your meat instead of eating” 😂😂
It's called a hypnagogic jerk/hypnagogic myoclonic twitch. It's basically when you're falling asleep, (for the most part) when your muscles start relaxing, some part of your brain that's still awake feels you're not supportive - you must be falling, and it jolts you awake. In sleep, the conscious part of your brain misinterprets some of its own signals, believing you to actually be falling - supportively jerks you awake. It always occurs outside of R.E.M. sleep and can be due to fatigue.
Is tea a healthy liquid to drink? I've read that tea is not healthy because it uses up extra water in the body. Is this true?
Alexis Zuniga depends on the tea, fpr example, you can drink green tea in the morning, but don't do it 10 days straight because it will mess with your metabolism. you can have green tea but not in exess, and if you drink too much today, dont drink tomorrow and so on
My solution is to buy healthy food from the grocery store. Don't eat fast food every week. Make it once or twice a month. If you do eat anything unhealthy like cake or ice cream don't eat out. Pick and choose. You can't eat out then turn around and have ice cream.
the music gives me the chills
I've been too sick to eat today, so this video made me hungry...
Anyone from 2024 here?
No more high fat and sugary food for me!
I was raised hungry in a very poor family, so me finally putting full plates on my desk makes me feel like I'm missing out if i dont eat it all, cuz i used to think like that when i was a kid someday i eat good some days i dont
I watch this as I finish a full bag of tostitos.... great timing chain of youtube videos
My question: Why do we get insomnia ?
Eat more natural fat, more natural protein, less carbs (like grains, bread, etc), eat lots of non-starchy vegetables, drink water (coffee, or green, nothing else), and stay as active as possible. It's not that difficult. Stop worrying about quantity of calories and worry a heck of a lot more about the quality of them.
Right! I'm 14 years old, a girl, and I always eat 3 full plates of rice and vegetables at lunch and dinner. But I somehow stay healthily in shape.
That's because you are 14 years old and still growing. Wait till you're 44...
Christine
Yeah, she has a teenage metabolism
You explained changing someone's entire life, what do you mean its not that hard. Like I understand what you mean but dont make it sound incredibly easy
*sigh* im trying to stop overeating and have been for a few weeks. so far it seems it's mostly self control for me. before if I got bored I'd constantly eat. now I'm getting better and trying to get as much exercise as I can. when I say self control I mean eating only when you're hungry and less snacks. and it's okay if you don't get every crumb of every food. it's a little challenging but I'm getting there:)
IVE totally quit sugar at all.😊
Thank God to make me this strong.❤️
Eating potato chips while watching this...
How do I loose weight for school?
You could look how much calories to eat on the Internet to lose weight (depends on height weight age and how active you are)
You can try eating until you're around 80% full instead of eating until you feel full. I hear that's what Japanese people do, and they all seem to be skinny. :3
I'm sure its more than that.
just substitute your snacks with healthy snacks like fruits or vegetables and don't drink anything but water and for your meals try to eat vegetables with all your meals and stay away from fried foods
+randomperson63758 lol that's basic,y what I did
This queen didn't answer the question at all.
Great videos. An interesting topic would be about hair- whether plucking white ones means two grow back, whether plucking makes hair get thinner, or cutting more frequently thicker. Thanks for considering as the next science video
why do i pee so much
rahul garg because maybe, just maybe you drank water
lol 1:13-1:16 admit it you are one of those people too : D
That's the problem... I love sweets... But I'm 11 and only weight 67 lbs... What is it?
sasha pike that... is kinda very... underweight... well it depends on your height, but still, an 11 year old shouldn't be that underweight
CloudGamer^-^ well crap. I'm 12, 5' 2" and 65 pounds. Apparently that's not healthy.
SirFloof do your mothers/fathers starve you and sasha? Then again, you two can have an very high metabolism rate.
CloudGamer^-^ what would make you think they starve us? What I am opposite is of Sasha, I can't stand sweets. That probably has something to do with that. But I believe I am healthy. Maybe. People at school make fun of me. But whatever.
Our brains familiarize dreams that we maybe have remembered quite well, instead of forgetting it, and using a familiar scenario, your brain can sometimes trigger a same or familiar dream sequence.
My main transport is by bike too. I usually try to eat throughout the day to beat back hunger. For example, 7 am eat breakfast, bike to work, 9am at work I eat a yoghurt, 12-ish lunch, 3 or 4 snack on an apple and/or granola bar, bike home, 6 or 7 dinner, then maybe fruit or a little dessert later. I also liked dried fruit and nut mixes (drink lots of water with them though).
It's natural to be hungry every 3-4 hours, but you don't have to eat huge meals at every time.
Scrap this, Im gonna eat kfc
Everybody thinks calories make you fat. But it doesn't. Here's an example, most people that want to lose weight they go 1500c, Pepsi is 150c and 42g of sugar. You drank 15 Pepsi you would never lose wieght. Only way to lose weight is to eat right and workout.
Or eat less (and drink more) daily, routinely. I weighed 172 after my 1st semester of college. After that winter break I weighed less than 155. Recently, I intentionally changed my eating habits so I can hit 170 by the new year. I'm caught between 164 and 168, but I'll probably weigh 170 by next Monday cuz thanksgiving lol.
If you eat less that just means your losing muscle. Not fat.
Daniel Davoodnia more or less. You will only burn up your muscles after all fat has been used
Afro Barreto pretty sure you'll die before your body can eat the muscles if you have no fat.
Yes, eating less calories will not make you lose weight. It's because physics and chemistry do not apply to human bodies. Really simple.
This is a life saver!
It's popularly called "itis". When your stomach receives food, the part of your nervous system that is responsible for your body reactions decreases in activity while the part of your nervous system responsible for putting your body in a state of rest does the opposite. It allows you to digest effectively and that's what makes you feel tired. Eventually, the more you eat, the more you feel tired.
go vegan
*claps*
SoTotallyRandom I'm vegan and this is problem for me. Vegan doesn't mean healthy, I can eat potato chips and oreos every single day and being vegan. I say yes, go vegan for the animals, for the planet and for yourself, but veganism isn't going to fix your mental and physic problems if you don't do teraphy or whatever else your body and brain needs, even when it helps a lot.
I'm exactly like this as well. Once I get into the habit of eating healthy or exercise, it's easy. I never understood those people who actually can control what they eat.
I refuse to believe that this video was made 9 years ago 😲
I just adore ur one liner comments in the thinking cloud!! rofl
videos like this make me hungry..............
So basically to not overeat, Just don’t eat until I’m hungry. Thanks for that!
LOL when I saw the title I thought this was some kind of how to keep eating even though you're full 101 to help you get through Thanksgiving :D
Andddd I got a binge eating add on this video...
This is pretty interesting now I know why I liked craving on some junk food but once i decided not to eat it , I stopped! And it changed my eating habits. : )
Can you do the science of doodling?
Nice video!
Can you explain why people get head tingles when a person plays with another person's hair? There's a community on youtube called "ASMR" which stems from this idea. Apparently, sounds can also trigger this response too.
Would you make a video on if the number of calories change in how an egg is cooked? An egg that wasn't scrambled and one that was. Without any additives, like butter or milk.
You've heard of fight or flight? This response is caused by the effects of your sympathetic system. Now the opposite of this is rest and digest and this is caused by your parasympathetic system. When you eat your blood flow lessens to your skeletal muscles and flows more to your digestive organs. The parasympathetic system is then activated and as a result this also activates the hormones which cause you to feel sleepy, therefore the parasympathetic system being associated with "rest and digest".
When you start to fall asleep your muscles relax. Part of your brain notices this visualizes a scenario and jerks your muscles to catch your self from"falling"
The hormone ghrelin is also released when you eat mcdonalds etc, thats why you can eat so much of it and still feel hungry. This is due to the amount of high fructose corn syrup which is being placed on loads of home foods now aswell!
Could you do a video on metabolism? And what about studies recent studies that link the ingestion of complex carbs with depresion. Thanks I love watching your videos!
It is not only does the evolutionary desire for high-energy foods that increases excessive eating. The fact that carbohydrates and fats digest quickly means that junk food may fill the stomach for only a half hour before passing on into the intestines. The desire for food therefore returns very quickly. To lengthen the full feeling, eat protein-laden foods, such as eggs and meat because protein can take hours to digest.
@Matthew B That's due to our individual metabolism. Metabolism is a process that's vital for every cell in your body. It converts the layered energy in thefood you eat to different kind of energy that your body needs. From an evolutionary point of view it's a good thing to have a low metabolism; in that way you're able to eat very little and not starve. But as long as there's an unlimited amount of food supplies, it causes you to layer a lot of unused energy.
This was a very informative video. Thanks!
Can you explain the science behind binge-eating disorders? What’s the difference between binging and overeating?
I'm watching this video while eating a second bag of popcorn. Take that, science guy.
Actually, popcorn is healthy for you if it doesn't have too much oil, butter, or salt
What would be a great meal to eat during the day? I'd say around 12 pm because I'm in school all day and don't get home until 6 pm...I eat honey bunches of oats (almonds) for breakfast by the way.
i tend to keep little junk food in the apartment (what my roommate brings home in another story, but bc the junk food is hers, i seldom touch it even though i know she wouldn't mind), and generally just keep a small candy bowl with hard candies and occasionally some chocolate if i'm craving it. i also am a vegetarian. i have had a problem with binge eating for years and still do (i had been diagnosed at one point with BED and at another point Ana, a story for another time), but instead of binging on inherently fatty and sugar foods, it tends to be raw foods or leftovers from a previous meal - sweet potatoes, applesauce, and blueberries are my go-to "sweet" foods. it is difficult to buy fresh produce all the time, though, even in kroger, where we get discounts. i have to go all the way to another state (granted it's only a 20 min drive) to go to a second-hand produce store just to purchase in bulk, affordable produce - i generally leave having spent maybe $25 total (i have yet to reach that maximum) with a cart full of fruits and vegetables: but in america it is hard and rare to be able to do that, because junk is produced en masse and easier to get
love your channel great stuff visually and informatively!! You speak so much about the human brain.... don’t you think the brain takes little time to experience the beautiful visuals that u create the same time understand the information you giving...many a times we leave the part/information you are giving and adore the visuals...my point is it will be really awesome if u could speak a little slower. AGAIN LOVE YOUR WORK! keep doing what your doing but a little slower :P
This just made me hungry.
I used to over eat a lot but then i moved in with family that didn't have a lot of money so there was never much food. I just tried to trick my brain into thinking i was sick instead of hungry and now i can never really tell the difference. Pretty good for weight loss but probably not very healthy
Love your work
It's also been noticed that insulin (which is correlated to sugar/carbohydrate intake) can block the effectiveness of Leptin.
This, exactly :)
It's a survival instinct. After some time your body discontinues the signal for food as it sees that it isn't getting a reaction. I believe the same thing happens when you feel sleepy throughout the day, then don't feel sleepy at night.
I’m watching this video as I’m eating out of the ice cream tub
By "sugar", I'm assuming that we are both referring to sucrose. Soda, chocolate, sweets, etc.
I don't eat unhealthy food; i don't eat processed sugar, my family doesn't buy snack foods or cereal, and I'm vegan. despite all this, i still feel the urge to keep eating even when i feel sick from being full. i try to eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich foods, so it's not like i am missing out on nutrition. so what does that mean now? what do i do to stop? i go to bed every night feeling super sick and bloated, and i am afraid it's going to start having huge negative effects on my body.
great video!
What is the science of liking someone and knowing them ,but still nervous to talk to them
The science of sound
