I truly believe this is one of the most ambitiously written television shows of all time. Its pacing at the beginning is slow, but worth it, truly the best of slow burns. And as for the inaccuracy, I'd argue once you've seen the whole thing that sort of stuff matters less considering certain themes that are woven throughout the writing. All characterisation for every part of the ensemble cast is well thought out, complex and interesting - and as you say, the internal politics are fascinating, and it really never disappointed me in any of the four seasons. Every rewatch I find some new hidden detail to marvel over, it's just the best kind of storytelling, with so much to pull apart and appreciate. It's a great pilot, and I remember thinking the first time I watched it, how fun it was to watch something where all the characters, while flawed and able to make mistakes because of these flaws, were consistent, with all different motives, and above all, smart. Hope you enjoy the ride!!
Maybe this show isn't accurate when it comes to historical facts (costumes etc.). However the storyline is amazing! (Black Sails is one of the best series out there in terms of character work and telling a coherent & compelling story. Therefore I think you will love it. I know I'm excited for your reactions.
Theres a couple historical moments that do play out tho. Probably not quite the same but i know of one that happens in this and in Assassins Creed Black Flag with the same historical person and ive read about that one being real. But other than that i cant think of anything specific except maybe one other without getting into specifics
Yay for a possible new "Black Sails" reaction! The show is a loose prequel to "Treasure Island" and very cool that you're familiar with the book. It's not super historically accurate but the story is amazing. The ship sets from "Black Sails" where the ones later used in "Outlander" since Starz made both shows. It was very weird to me to see the ship sets in Outlander because I was like "Oh, that was Flint's cabin!" or "That's the spot where so-and-so happened". 😂😂
So looking forward to this on UA-cam. Subscribed! Other reactors will tell you, Black Sails won't draw quite as many views, but is one of the most perfect shows for reaction purposes. Criminally underrated and under-watched, the perfect story writing is going to take you on a journey you'll never forget. Forget any minor historical inaccuracies. As a prequel to Treasure Island, this is a fictional story at the end of the day. What's more amazing is how many historical references there actually are. The post-watch rabbit holes you can go down seem endless! It's so much fun to watch the viewers evolution as the show gets better every episode starting in Season 2. Definitely excited for you.
Thank you! It will be awhile before it hits UA-cam (more Outlander first) but I just started reactions for it on patreon and the second episode was just as good as the first!
@@alexachipman So sorry to hear that. Reactions are so much better here when they are still fresh. Also makes the comments on UA-cam far less significant.
@@srohr04 Well, I have to pay rent on my space to record in, and patreon is what helps me do that. Without them there would be zero videos! You are right about the comments. YES YOU SHOULD. it's about captain Flint and long John silver before the events of "treasure island" also a lot of the production crew worked on outlander after this series ended. Bear McCreary (the composer) did a ton of research on music and instruments of the era and used a lot of that knowledge for the music of Outlander as well
I just got through all your Outlander reactions (the ones that are on youtube), and now knowing your love of ships, I was so excited to see your starting this
Absolutely you should watch this show. This show is an adult prequel to Treasure Island, but doesn't perpetuate the stereotypes that book created about pirates. It also mixes in real historical pirates from the time. It definitely isn't accurate, but I think it's clever enough to be forgiven for that. Very excited for your thoughts. Also, you may recognize these ships from another semi-historical show you've watched. Can't believe I missed this drop. Been scrambling to catch up with your vids. Love them so much!
The thing to remember that first season is slower, as it is building up the arcs that will eventually lead to Treasure Island. So if you like it right now know that it will get better.
I guess because they use historic names people thought it might be accurate. But forget all that black sails just has an amazing story well worth the watch!!

Best unknown show of all time. Its incredible. I would strongly recommend. If you can manage till the end, you will be heavily moved...and you are probably a total sociopath if you are not. That said, I do understand that even if I think this is the greatest show of all time, I do understand that some people are just not down for the 18th century carribean or the way the language is delivered and spoken. For me, as a big history fan and someone who grew up with the 50s Disney Treasure Island, this show was almost Tailor made for me. I would say that this show does generally attract those of us that are fascinated by history but especially this time period only a few decades prior to the American Revolution. I always loved the ships and naval combat and treasure and clothes and stles and technology from that era. I think if you don't like that type of stuff, even if the show would turn you around, I do understand people just not being able to get on-board and stay on board. I don't think you will have that issue at all. Last thing here, I can somewhat believe the claim Black Sails is very inaccurate....but perhaps only as opposed to real factual historical details and events of the time. I would say that outside of a few well known films like Master and Commander, there really isn't that much in this genre to compare the show to in terms of realism. Maybe there are some hyper accurate films from the time period but I'm pretty sure there are not any television shows...making this extremely unique in that regard. I loved Reign, because it was inaccurate in so many ways, but got me delving into the past for the real story, which I knew parts of, being a fan of the tudor period.
It's not completely accurate but it does hit a few milestones of the age. They gave some of Paul Belamy's deeds to Flint, like the attack on Charlestown, but I find they got the flavour and politics of the era right
I hope you keep watching this! The first season has some rough scenes that I know scared a lot of people off, but I honestly think this is one of the few truly good shows we've seen in recent years. As an aside, I'd love to see you review more historical movies and TV shows since you often have something interesting to add. :) (Still hoping you'll do Alexander as well)

It's been a while since I both read _Treasure Island_ and watched _Black Sails,_ so I don't remember how accurate either of them are to each other, as _Black Sails_ - if I remember correctly - is a prequel to _Treasure Island._
Oh Alexa I'm happy you're watching this. I remember you referencing Hornblower a few times and I loved that, but it's a shame it didnt last longer. Can I genuinely ask what was inaccurate about Max's costume? Was it the style for the time, or was it 'too fancy' for the locale? I've never read Treasure Island, so the names don't mean as much to me, but I think everyone knows John Silver, Captain Flint etc. Some of the characters who appeared like Charles Vane were real people historically. The violence in the show is not toned down, the fight scene between Flint and that crewman was definitely a case of 'Woah, easy' when he's pummelling seven shades out of him.
Sure - to start with, even as a lady of the evening, they had a specific dress code at that time period to follow, and that is not it. Moving beyond that, the corset itself is: - the wrong cut / style - modern fabric / colors - lacking in both proper chemise and corset cover That being said, she looked divine!
@@alexachipman Thanks for that, I think the show can be forgiven some anachronisms if it's entertaining. I did think that it looked a bit fancy for the area and time period, more like something that could have been worn in a big city but I must admit to no knowledge of the clothing styles. At least the pirates look a rather disreputable bunch. I do have an interest in a wide range of historical subjects, but when it comes to naval history my main field is the Pre-Dreadnought and Dreadnought eras. I imagine if you like age of sail that you will have seen Master and Commander:Far Side of the World? Thanks for the info on the mistakes of the clothing. I would have thought Eleanor Guthrie might be a bit fancier, but at the same time you get the impression she's mixing with all sorts and wouldn't want to appear too stand-offish.
@@alexachipman The silhouettes get better. Still not 100% period accurate, but 18th century-ish, at least. There are a few missteps like this one, but I actually really love how the costuming evolves. It takes liberties, but is fairly consistent within the world of Black Sails and the fabrics, aging and textures are beautiful! I'm really happy to see someone with knowledge of the era and genre do a reaction to this show. It's so underrated. It gets better every season. If you loved the first episode, I think you'll be thrilled with the rest.

I was kinda confused when I saw the notification for episode 2... I was like, how did I miss the first/pilot episode? I found it and noticed the date. I'm very happy you're covering the series! I was also wondering, if you haven't seen it, may I suggest Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. Now to watch episode 2 ! Take care, Alexa!
If you like old time sailing ships then give "Hornblower" a look-in.(1998 to 2003 and set in the Napoleonic Wars). Also a good land based series is "Sharpe" starring Sean Bean (1993 to 1997 and 2006 and astarts off in 1809).
I completely agree! In fact I have a Sharpe commentary coming out in a few weeks that I just finished editing. I have some videos about both series’ but more as a review format. I watched them when they originally aired, since I am a huge fan of the books for Sharpe and Hornblower.
if you get the time, please try the pilot episode of killing eve! it’s a bbc show with the first 3 seasons on hulu and the 4th and final airing on amc+ right now. it isn’t historical but i really do think you’d enjoy it.
I could tell by your first 5 or 6 comments that you DO love tall ships. A love the two of us and probably the majority of those who watched share. "Run up the Black" and enjoy yourself on this one. It's an awesome bit of fictional history. You'll find yourself saying "Was that pirate real? Then looking him up and getting some new information. This and "The Three Musketeers" are two of the best for historical entertainment. ❤🔥 You might also like "Peaky Blinders" for a great turn-of-the-century crime story. I have a 3-part Napoleonic Naval machinima I created on my UA-cam channel. It's received very good reactions from those who review machinima and was featured on a number of talk shows dealing with machinima. If you're interested in that kind of thing.
I am almost done with recording the reactions and after being very confused the first four episodes or so, thinking it was all purely fiction and they just borrowed names, I figured out no, this is a fusion history/fiction show. Then I really got into it!
@@alexachipman Wow! That's so great to hear. You've made it through what is generally considered the worst of the 4 seasons. So pleased to hear you are enjoying it already, as the best is yet to come. So does this mean we will see Black Sails sooner then 6 months from now?
What bothers me about period films or tv series is that the actors teeth are so white, back in these days with all the tobacco use and strong teas they drank there teeth would resemble the color of brown wood not bright white..
Oh another suggestion for a historical based series but you might not be able to get it there as it's from the 80's was a show called Robin of Sherwood, which was a fairly gritty but not overly so interpretation of the Robin Hood storyline.
I petered out in interest on this after season 2 (GOT obsession) killed my interest in most other shows. This one had facts well overboard but it does illustrate the dangers of the 'letter of marque' the licence a owner of a civilian vessel could obtain to set up as a Privateer, when the war ended in the early 1700's there was a danger that privateers would become pirates, rather than return to being merchants or smugglers. With a fact I'll add that if they hadn't been too evil when the next war broke out they could buy a pardon, get a new letter of marque and be back in legal business. Also of course there was no peace west of the line Pope Alexander the VI had drawn when he gave the Americas to Spain. Which we saw happen in the Borgia's
If you want a dark series with a mystery to it. Check out Disney's late 90's show So Weird. If you would prefer something shorter there is a show which only lasted 22 episodes across two seasons called Pushing Daisies.
Or as I like to call it, "Gay Feminist Pirates of the Caribbean". This is really for people who just don't give a fig, not only for historical accuracy but even verisimilitude. Like "Bridgerton" fans, shall we say. Well, not quite that bad, to be fair. The show does have great production values, but I had cramps from cringing so often (yes, I watched the whole series). Almost forgot, if you like Toby Stephens you might want to check out a movie called "The Machine" (2013) which came out about the same time as, and tackles similar themes as "Ex Machina". Also starring Caity Lotz.

Are there full length cuts?
Only for occasionally Star Trek. I think my FAQs video gets into it: ua-cam.com/video/uNpsUvjvzSM/v-deo.html
Which platform is this on? I'll watch along if I have it
I was watching on Starz; it might also be on Netflix?
I'm devastated that there's no episode 2.
There is on patreon! Otherwise it will be coming to standard UA-cam after Outlander S6.
@@alexachipman So that's over 28 weeks away since you are only at 4x10 on Outlander and each season is about 13 episodes.
@@srohr04 True, but it's out on Patreon :)
Vote to get another reaction to this amazing show here : ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxu3Wz5j2-KbQ-zSKr-dcW9Vdv-t3kIkQL
Done! I just recorded all of S1 for my reactions and loving it so far.
They also didn’t have perfect modern makeup at all times; someday we will have a truly immersive show that avoids all that!
(Sighs, grumbles) ANOTHER Starz show I've got to binge to keep up.
If you want a dark series with a mystery to it. Check out Disney's late 90's show So Weird. If you would prefer something shorter there is a show which only lasted 22 episodes across two seasons called Pushing Daisies.
Pushing Daisies was a fun show!
@@alexachipman It was, and it deserved so much better than what happened to it.
Well, as a lesbian, I thoroughly approve of finally having a show where I am represented :)
@@alexachipman Really none of my business. I have a similar take on the Biblical parts of sword & sandal pics or some of John Wayne's old flicks.
