We had 3-5 company trucks and then we brought in all the harvest contract haulers, around 100, and kept the highways between Southern Oklahoma to Caprock Texas, 25 different load and Coop points, busy just like your harvest is. And yes, I do miss that! Terrible food, looong hours, no sleep, getting called out all hours with a broke truck 200 miles away or, worse, a accident. But nothing will make a big bunch of folks come together for 3 months out of the year like bringing in a harvest.

I hear ya' Daddy Cornstar. The comments you made while driving the semi, on the highway, and people passing when they shouldn't. Most of our two lane roads around my home were either built for model T's, or gravel roads that have been paved in the last 25 years. Most of them have very few passing areas, and very few long enough to pass a truck. If you need to go faster, use the 4 lane roads. We all know what time of year to help our farmers out and give them a break. I grew up in a rural town. Used to seeing farm equipment on the roads during planting and harvesting. You use the gravel roads for the most part, but there are times you need the highways. Thanks for helping to put food in our bodies, seed for the next planting season, and food for the livestock. There are several packing plants around here. I was born in Waterloo Iowa. My Dad worked at Wrath Packing, next to the Cattle Congress. I live in Warren County... not much but fields in this county 😊❤

Cole, it would cost some money out front, but adding a vfd to the cross auger in the pit would solve the problem. Your controls guy can easily set up a load sensing program to monitor the amperage draw from the motor. There would be a target amperage and if that threshold was exceeded the vfd would automatically slow down until the amperage dropped below the threshold. That would prevent burning off the belts but still keep the discharge auger fully loaded. Then as the pit becomes empty the cross auger would speed back up again to quickly empty the pit.

The pit centering auger problem can simply be solved with a timer relay. It doesn’t need to run all the time so don’t. Put a timer on the control of the auger motor. 10 sec on and 20 sec off. Or change the pulley sizes to spin at 30% current rate. I enjoy all your content. Grew up in Melrose township. Very easy to relate.

I live in farm country by choice. Twice a year I get stuck behind slow moving equipment. Passing isn't the safest option on most of these roads either. I'll gladly just hang back behind that machine for a few extra minutes rather than risking it with the traffic on those same roads. Thankfully our ditches aren't so deep here, because I've pulled over into them more than a few times to let machines pass without taking out a mailbox or something else. I'm not a farmer, but I'll stick with living between them. The spring and summer inconveniences are worth it compared to where else i'd be living. It's not hard to figure out the day or two they will be in your way if you pay attention either. Planting and harvesting seasons delay me WAY less than the normal stuff on the highway. Plus, I like to eat regularly, so I'll give the farmers some room so we can do that.

Industrial maintenance here. If you have a frequency drive for your cross auger (which I imagine you do) you might be able to slow it down where it turns slower that the diagonal auger. So that way it can take away grain faster than it can pile up. Might be able to have Joe look at that for you. It's not right but you might not have to change belts everyday. Best of luck.

Every day running up and down the county road, I've been passed and almost witness to head on collisions, and I'm doing the speed limit! On the pit, maybe slow the cross auger down so it won't crowd the lift auger, it might help.

Change the cross auger to a chain drive instead of belts. You could put vee belt pulleys that uses 8 vee grooves instead of 4 vee grooves.

Just a thought, if you put put a voltage monitor on the cross auger, and back fed it so when the middle is empty the auger runs until the middle has filled you might stop cramming the grain and burning out belts???

Cole, the auger solution would be to use a motion switch on the pulley, they can be wired to send a constant signal to sense rotation or to send pulses.
If you have an AB high speed counter module on the plc rack you can set the belt slip limit through basic coding.

Here's hoping your Lawyer sues the pants of your contractor, I know you all have been troopers putting up with it and you have to stay quiet for now, but enough is enough with the shoddy work and under sized equipment they installed there... All of you are just pushing through and we all know things break from time to time. I hope a warm dinner and a few hours of sleep bring back more of the smiles.... I think a lot of us would love to come and help you all get through this a little easier. Thanks as always for bringing us along on your journeys, hope to see you tomorrow...... Maybe change the pulley sizes on the pit cross auger to slow it down? And if the belt spins might be worth switching to a poly chain if you are getting new pulleys anyways? Hope all works out and you end up finally getting your moneys worth one day.

Hey guys, what if you were to remove the pulleys on the cross auger and install sprockets with heavy duty chain. Have a small sprocket on the motor and a larger sprocket than the pulley that’s on the auger to slow down the auger speed a little. Might help since the belts can’t seem to handle the load and with the cross auger turning a little slower, might help the auger to the leg to keep up. That cross auger sounds like it’s going too fast.

Hi Cole. It sounds like the problems you are having burning out the belts in the cross auger could be because the gearing of the belts is wrong? If it’s trying to drive too fast your main centre auger won’t be able to take it away fast enough. Might pay to check if the pulleys on the drive motor and the cross auger need swapping over. Even if it’s running slow you could maybe still get to empty the truck out. Good luck with the rest of HC arrest from Australia. We are just a few wet away from starting our harvest. Been slightly delayed because of a wet spring for us here now, and much cooler temperatures. Have fun in the John Deere, glad they could come up with a solution for you. 👌👍

As an automation/controls engineer I can't help myself and don’t expect a response...
Is your pit cross auger driven by its own motor?
    Is it on a VFD?
If the auger is in fact independently driven, I'd put a VFD on it if it doesn't already have one and slow its speed down. I doubt it'd get you back to your rated grain take-away rate but it'd prevent you from burning up belts. You can get a fairly cheap one to save you the headache as you’re not doing anything too fancy control-wise.
Another option is to modify the PLC program to only run the cross auger when the main auger load is starting to lighten up. As you have noted previously, you are using load detection for the auto shut-down and as I understand the shape of the pit feeds the main auger when it’s "full" .
A fancier option could be to put an encoder on the auger shaft itself which with PLC code you could use to detect belt slippage and to throw an error and stop.
    I hope this information helps.

cole you might wanna consider changing the pulley size on the pit cross auger to minimize the pressure on the belts - it will slow the pit emptying time but will lower the stress on the pit system - love you guys and your family is in my prayers for success and abundance

DC, I share your frustrations about people passing semis and about killing themselves in the process. I live in a area with a lot of farming and constantly see people pushing semis loaded with soybeans, corn, livestock and passing them and about running themselves off of the road. I shake my head when someone risks there life to get around a slow moving semi and then that car and the semi arrive at the same red light at the same time.

Could you try reducing the size of pulleys on the ends of cross augers so they are running as fast and not binding as much, it's a band aid fix but it may help with not burning belts. Custom agri systems out of Napoleon ohio does fantastic work and they travel all over to do work for the Andersons.
