DC, I'm so sorry you've had to deal with the incompetent construction of the bin site! You handle it better than I would have. Safe harvest to you all. Kudos to Nave' for taking care of your chocolate milk needs! Great editing Summer!
You can name your Pit... "The Grates of Hell!!!" LOL
I don't know why this is taking so long to figure out who made the mistakes. But I know this I will definitely read my contract with a attorney before I sign someone to build my bin site. Money does not grow on trees😊😊😊😊
😂 well you haven’t been in the legal system I am guessing 💁♂️😅 that’s how they work dragging it out for years. That way the lawyers get paid well for their paper shoveling 💁♂️😂
the contractor will tell his lawyers to drag their feet!
Incompetence reigns supreme
Jury trial is set for later April 2024. The defendant requested the jury vs bench. Based on their response to the complaint, I suspect they are going to try and sell the jury that the Cornstars are just trying to get something for free. But, no one is dumb enough to believe that. I doubt the defendant wants this to drag out too long either because they are a small business and they're also paying their lawyer by the hour. If Cornstars do win a judgment, they still have to collect. Then if they do actually get some money in the bank, how are you going to fix that mess? First they need to determine why the feed system does not meet the specs; the welding can be fixed, but the foundation under the hopper is going to have to be chiseled out and start over.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I suspect the contractor’s lawyers are going to use the videos of Cole filming when the bin site was being built & pushing the contractor to hurry up & finish. In hindsight it may have been better if took more time, even if it meant storing corn in shed for another year.
Watching you test the corn reminds me of my dad. He worked as a grain inspector at Continental Grain (now Conagra) in East Saint Louis, IL for decades when the Truckers were bringing the harvest in for sale.
Enjoy your visiting with us on your videos. Your family has been very patient with all the problems with the grain system that is the pits.
That Million Dollar Bin Site has been a HUGE problem since day one! It would be nice to get it fixed.
It’s a 2.5 million dollar death trap.
Yup college is just a piece of paper nothing like experience
@@sidneyknutson3823 ?
I don’t know if slots of it can be fixed I think a lot of it will have to be torn down and then start over again. Sad to say a lot of wasted money and time
@@sidneyknutson3823 Are you saying you believe the construction failures are Cole's fault? If so, please expound on that theory.
Like I said yesterday on Coles channel, makes me sick just to watch these also... Have had fam get scammed in FL after a hurricane... Not just the money, your site is DANGEROUS!!! In 91 we did a major overhaul of our grain system. Bought 2 used legs from a neighbor that they were upgrading, have the same SuperB dryer you have, got their over head bin and super structure etc,,, referbed it all ourselves... air floors in all the bins...We had a millwright neighbor literally a half mile down the road we hired to install it all. The dude did 110%, it increased our capacity 4 fold, we couldn't keep up with it... Rent it to a good friend neighbor to this day, still rocking it... so if you're wondering folks, 1974 SuperB batch dryer, still killing it... was sad to see Brian retire his... LOL...
I do appreciate you discussing the issues with the bin site. Helps everyone that will be building one in the future. It is a frustration now, but this too shall pass. Stay safe and appreciate the family you have around you to work and live with. God has blessed you and you are blessing your family. Edward and his siblings and cousins will be the future and the bin site will be a story of the work it takes to carry on!
Well said!
How will God bless sueing it's clearly a sin
Well “Give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s.” The Lord God Almighty didn’t set us down upon earth and say “Here are the rules…this will be easy.” Sometimes he will expect us to stand up against what is wrong, especially to protect our family. No different than how he would stand up to protect us. We will have to look within our heart to determine what is right.
@@billpotmesil you definitely don't Kno the whole Bible
When I am driving in the country I constantly see the bin sites and think of you guys. Wishing that everything can get fixed and your struggles to be over. 🙏
My heart goes in my throat every time you show a video of anyone climbing around on top of that bin site ever since you were up there and piece’s kept coming off in your hand. Be careful!
Daddy Cornstar, pretty sure Nave is gonna watch this and put 2+2 together. Oh my goodness you make me laugh n I love it.❤
Ur such a lovely family that works so hard. Iv had to retire at 42 because of heart problems I used to work 18 hour shifts y day a week and can’t do it any more.
Daddy, I surely hope you can get the handling system working properly. Things cost enough these days without issues! You are true treasure!
That was very nice of Nave . There’s always time for a chocolate milk an a donut . Just don’t run with the milk…….might turn into chocolate butter 😄
Call it the Money Pit! I'll be glad when you guys get some satisfaction over this major issue of the grain bin site. It's been a mess since day 1!
Just remember being cheap costs money nobody admits it was his fault
I can't imagine tearing out the concrete floors in those big bins and the cost involved, better off pouring new floors next to the old ones, then there's the problem of moving the bins onto the new slabs, what a mess.
@@logpile1318 Foundations on houses can be fixed (piers dug and poured, etc. I bet there's a good way to do that with the bin site too, without having to rebuild everything. Piers cost money, but maybe the lawsuit can take care of that.
I hope you get your bin problems fixed. To spend that much money and it doesn't work or is just plain falling apart is crazy. Thank you for feeding us though. Tough job and tough people.
Daddy Corn-Star … there was a moment during the video where I thought I was able to read your mind … I think you were actually shaking a little bit. You were talking about the Bin Site and I got the idea that if you could start over you might have wished to be more involved from the beginning. We have all been there before, and in retrospect wished for more information earlier (your words). Well … “water under the bridge”. The big question is what lessons have been learned that will guarantee that working with contractors (any contractors) is a joy going forward? Making sure those lessons are learned and protect Corn-Star Farms going forward is the realm of wise old men like us. This is the important part and some of these lessons are not easy to discuss. Good luck!!!!
Good to get a uninterrupted sleep! Cooper and yourself are the hardest working farmers on UA-cam
Sorry for your million dollar storage DISASTER BIN SITE. The worst I've ever seen. Shame Shame Shame on the engineers, designers ,fabricators and the builders. Sue the last dollar out of them 😮
I sure hope that contractor isn’t building anymore. Sorry you have to deal with it, harvest is enough to worry about.
I know im late to the party. But I've had some experience running augers at a biomass boiler plant. We would run cyclo gear boxes on our feed augers and chains. They were extremely reliable and even though they obviously had some downsides, they would generally run 24/7 with very little downtime. In my opinion, it's a more durable setup then running belts on augers. Especially if the augers are stationery.
I know what it's like to have equipment constantly failing and having to be worked on.
Seeing all of your struggles with the bin site reminds me that I'm glad I'm retired !
Don't worry, DC, hopefully they will get things straightened out. 🤞🙏
Great video today. 👍
The bin site was supposed to stop all of thos e struggles, instead it is worse
Oh, you have to name the pit "The PoePit". Edgar Allen Poe could have written a gothic novel (The Pit and the Pendulum) about your misery with this bin site. LOL
I know from first hand experience, lawyers take a long time to get things done through the legal system. I just pray that your family is made whole again because of the situation with the bin site. You feel violated when things like this happen and wonder why would someone do that to you and your family.
Allegedly, the attorneys have no incentive to conclude a suit quickly. More hours means more money. Just make sure the lower pays the legal costs for the winner!
I loved that you showed the dog, the air in the bin! Thanks for sharing DC!
Always great to see you as you talk us through your day, DCS! I like watching Cole's videos and seeing how yours overlap, and the different perspectives you both bring to the work at hand. And seeing more of Ellie is always great! It's funny how sneaky pups can be sometimes, but they're like kids that way, lol.
Stay safe and well as harvest progresses. It will be good to be on the other side of the terrible issues with the handling system at some point, sooner rather than later, I hope. And make sure Nave keeps you well supplied with tiny house snacks...😄
If you're burning belts, then tighten them.
For the bottleneck that pit auger is, how long would it take to pull the auger and check the flighting?
Unlikely but the other possibility is you need larger pulleys or more belts.
Was thinking that... A larger auger pulley to run a little slower or a wider pulley for additional belts or wider belt to handle the load. Wonder if it could be the unloading side of the auger isn't made correct?
DC please find a safe place to tie off on when you go up on the bin. It's not safe for any of you to be up there. PLEASE! Love to all the family!🥰
What a multi million dollar headache 🤕 😮
Feel so bad for y’all but I have to say Y’all have been the best people in this whole mess. It’s been such a LONG process and I hope it’s over soon. Donuts 🍩 + chocolate milk makes some happy guys 😅
Daddy cornstar you are a funny man. I love you’re seance of humor
I missed the seance🤔...🔮👀😵💫...but he is "a trip"!!?!
The new bin site was so exciting for your family. I'm sorry it has not turned out well and is now a source of stress.
It's rubbish what your having to deal with, keep going stay safe
It's hard to imagine the costs associated with drying corn 7%. Used to have that same tester, but ours was branded Dole. Something we did was switch our augers over to shaft mounted 1:5 reducers specifically for Augers. It allowed us to run them full and then variable speed them to our leg that was always a problem.
Many years ago I worked for a country elevator and that was rated at 5,000 bu. per hour and we had speed reducers on every auger. When the video shows the motor pulley on the auger with very little belt contact no wonder you keep burning off the belts. Shaft mounted gearbox's eliminate the huge size difference between the drive and driven pulleys. Also every dump pit included a slide gate in the bottom so that the augers would not have to start under load. In my opinion cost savings became the most important thing. Remember people will build what you want to make a sale.
I,m sure the law suit is frustrating it seems that justice moves at a snails pace. hang in there and God bless.
So sorry you guys have to deal with incompetent people.
I can't believe that when they were building the bins and grain pit that some light bulbs came on in those people's brain that some things didn't look right!!
Thank you DC! God bless your family!
Daddy cornstar the farm is looking great cold weather is setting in those bins are gonna have to work God bless the farmers❤❤😊😊😊😊
I thought I saw in an earlier video that the dump pit outlet cannot be shut off-if this is correct I would stop and do what it takes to be able to close the outlet completely. Then you can gradually open it until you reach close to rated load on the auger motor. It may be you need a larger driven pulley on the auger drive, and go up from the current number of belts on your pulleys. What amperage is your auger motor pulling? How does that compare to full load as listed on motor plate? If you can control the flow from the pit you can dump your trucks faster and allow pit to empty in a controlled fashion while you bring the next truck in.
I must have missed the reason that wet storage bin can only hold 4000 bushel.
Young man just remember the all wont put in a situation, that you cant handle. God bless n take care.
Chuckled seeing a shoe on the table next to your food in the harvest hut!
another thing you might can try is put baffles in the bottom about 1 to 2 feet above the auger to keep the wt of the corn off the auger, 4 pcs of round tubing, a pc of 3/8 flat sheet folded in center to a point this will keep weight off the auger at bottom releasing the corn slower into the vertical auger
I’ve Been thinking I same thing, and change pulley gearing
@@jeremymullen5378I think pulley size would be the first to try... Either larger pulls to slow it down, or wider pulley for a bigger belt/additional belts. If go with more belts, might need a bigger motor. Might need a beefier auger after all said and done to handle the load, but a grain limiter sheet in the pot like the guy suggested would be an alternative
I think you should call the dump pit (and maybe the whole bin site) "The Pit of Despair." In reference to the movie "The Princess Bride." Hopefully you don't run into any R.O.U.S.'s! LOL
Sounds like The Pit of Despair to me.
You should call it the endless pit, because the problems with it are absolutely endless!
Hey! DC, good to see you. I look forward to the finalization of the lawsuit. It is a long time coming.
You have reached an elite level of dad.
Call the grain pit the money pit. It really sucks you guys have had so many issues with your bin site. I hope you guys will get your site fixed up right. Big fan of yours. Keep up the good work there are so many people that appreciate it.
Also More who hate it
Your disaster of a grain transfer system could be called the "Gridlock Gantry", though it's technically not a gantry. Alternatives could be "Gridlock Gadget", "Gridlock Gizmo" or just "The Gridlocker".
I really do hate that the bin site is all screwed up for you guys !! Sure hope you guys prevail and everything gets fixed . You would think the manufacturer would stand behind their dealer, at least some . Stay safe on those bins !!!
Your millwright sure left something to be desired.
I was around a great millwright for almost ten years. In them years never seen any thing like you are going through.
Hopefully the court gives you a huge settlement.
How about switching the belt drive out with a direct drive, where the motor is directly connected to the augershaft. Or eventually with gears and chains?. It will be better at overcoming small clogs than belts.
Just make sure that there is an motor over current protection in place that cuts power in case of a big clog.
Hope the bin situation get a final verdict soon.
That spillage is what my grandpa called ground grain. He’d scoop it up and bring it to our farm where we would screen it on frames he and dad made for chicken feed.
DC, I want to cast a vote for naming the pit #PitOfDespair. Happy Havest, stay safe!
That's my ex wife
How about the CornHub?
Or "pit of repair"
I hadn't read any of the comments yet, but The Pit of Despair was the first thing that came to mind.
maybe Sheol :)
You're getting good at videos. Keep it up DCS.
The Pit from Hell! It makes me sick to see your dream setup is such a disaster.
I’d lease a 16 inch auger and forget that pit. When you reach a settlement in court add the $$$ and labor to your settlement agreement.
Someone mentioned calling the bin site ‘Corn hub’. Hahahaha I think that would be too funny! 😂
Hi Daddy Cornstar - love your vids (& Cole's). Really feel for you re the bin site. The contractor & individual on-site workers should be ashamed of themselves. My only hope is that you have a top class SPECIALIST lawyer - don't worry about the cost as you'll get it back. PS Wee Ellie is a star too!
They'll regret it
Lifts the dog to see the corn in bin ! Classic! Something I would do
DC, Ketchup is known as "Indiana Gravy!"
I know your between a rock and hard place, investing in the farm and being let down must get to you on so many levels. God tests us with what we can take but sometimes it does make you question if you can take any more!
Lawyers will sort it out but that don’t help the farm storage and the income loss from having to sell crops rather than plan your sales.
Keep the faith, they farm will overcome and the poor workmanship will be repaired or replaced. Job was tested to beyond human resolve but was rewarded for his faith, I know that you and the whole Cornstar Family will reap the rewards and soon enough this tough time will be a small memory and the fun times will roll in. One love Cornstar Family keep pressing and we will all pray for you
Maybe you could call the corn pit the money pit! Just trying to lighten the mood cause I'd be like you, totally sick about it
11:56 Miss Ellie wants to be the Combine Operator!
Even once everything gets settled, if it does, everything will have to be tore down and rebuilt from the ground up
You deserve to be able to sleep in when you need to after all the work you guys put in all year
All this waste of money on the bin site just to water down my gas with alcohol to give my car less power and worst fuel mileage, go figure. Oh almost forgot and destroy my gasoline carburetors too.
I know that one thing can hold up the entire process. I can tell how aggravated it makes you all. However, you've got everything on video now... that should help this lawsuit. You and your boys are a hard working bunch. At least it's not completely broken. I wish there's something we can do, but besides a lot of views and prayers, we feel as helpless. You deserve to have your equipment and storage, including that important drying process. Everything has been running so smoothly in the field, and your bushels/acre are fantastic! It makes it all that more frustrating when you can't get it out of the truck. Hang in there Daddy Cornstar. ❤️🙏❤️🤗 Neva is a sweetheart getting donuts and chocolate milk. Everyone needs those extra calories. ❤😊
Daddy CornStar...My suggestion would be to maybe discuss is a High Torque Direct drive VFD drive on your grain unloading leg. You wont burn off belts because you replace the belt shives with a gear box. The downsides would be you would need to start auger before you dump. Good effect would be I would start it with Prox switch I would trigger by semi driving by. Other plus would be I would use it to Hold the RUN Command ON after until truck/trailer is gone for timer (say 30 Minutes) set to over what you need to empty your hopper bottom.
Hang in there Daddy Cornstar !! I was wondering where does all that corn you grow, go? Is it sold to make fuel or to be canned for use to enjoy on Thanksgiving?..or is it made into meal?
MONEY PIT Daddy Corn Star! So sorry for all the hassle!
I'm no expert on Grain Bins and I'm not sure if others like the Larsons, Johnsons or Brian have similar problems, but at this point it may be necessary to spend the money on a top notch Bin construction company to fix all the issues, and try to recover those costs through the lawsuit. I know that may not seem practical, but these band aid fixes you have been doing are adding up with no end in sigh. I would also see if your banker can help in some way. Your ability to recoup the costs is in their best interest as well.
As most, but not all contractors say.... "You got a problem? Can't see it from my house!" You have a Money Pit!
"The Money Pit" is perfect for a name.
It’s the “money pit” It has a positive when it works and your harvest is going into the bin to be sold, I had a negative meaning when it does not work and it is costing you money in time and repairs
From someone who doesn't know much I think you need to keep the pit dry. Put some tin over the top. Love what you guys do ❤
I was thinking the same thing, maybe later they will build a building over the pit.
Take the hopper out. Build reg bin with air floor for your wet bin. Fill 3 rings dry and cone down, now use as regular wet bin. When done drying refill with dry and cool down. Gives you multi purpose bin with lil extra storage at the end of season - cost less than hopper bin also. Project for when you win lawsuit, and you will win 🙂
Name it the Money Pit - right now it's eating money, eventually it will be making you money. Have faith!! Everything will work out! (Edit: Omg, I just saw the next comment said the same name! So funny!) (Second Edit - that's how I eat my fries too, only I use the little ketchup packs :))
New Pit Name…….
“The Bog of Eternal Stinch” 😂
Enjoyable video, even with problems of harvesting.
The Crap Chute!
Is it gonna work today?
I dunno.
It's a crap chute and a crap shoot.
Hope things improve. I am ticked they wired my dryer with Cutler-Hammer when I specified Square D QO. I have melted 3 breakers.
I would be scared putting fans on with less than 2’ corn across. It can lift floor, cause a huge mess.
I hope that Cole learn a lot from this and combine situation. ❤ He is good guy but too much in attack/invest mode and too little in defense/reinforce mode.
You the man DC. Keep on keeping on
This bin site is so dangerous that you’d be smart to get the judge or arbitrator to have a scaffolding erected around it so nobody falls. Otherwise they should be liable for business impairment and elevate risk premiums (that your insurance company could assess) for the farm operations. Maybe the liability needs to start cascading for the contractor’s lawyer to find motivation to settle this case so repairs can get started???
The PIT sounds good because any other word would be xxxxxx afterwards
Hey DC ! I appreciate your frustration with the bin site. I hope it works out before too long.
I’m curious if you’ve ever eaten field corn? I’ve rehydrated it and made a pork stew a few times when I couldn’t find dry hominy. It takes a couple days to simmer but the results are quite good. Speaking of food aren’t you concerned about a possible vitamin “P” deficiency? Seems like ages since you picked up lunch at Casey’s and you used to get your lunch there most of the time. 😜
Thanks for the video young fella !
It would be interesting to know if a certified structural engineer signed off on the grain bin layout and if the contractor built it to spec. The only reason I mentioned this is my granddaughter is studying to become a structural engineer. Also I was wondering if their are any State or Federal regulations pertaining to grain storage facilities for grain farming. I’m thinking about the safety of such grain storage facilities. Looks to me DC it might be a little scary climbing around on that structure.
The county court in Iowa that will eventually hear this case also hear criminal cases. Criminal cases always supersede civil cases (which this case is) in the court system. That is one reason civil trials take time to be scheduled for trial. The first thing that will need to be done in this civil trial is what is called discovery. Each side will gather evidence and conduct depositions to discover the facts of the case. A trial of this complexity could be years away. If the lawyers for the defendants (builders) discover that they could loose more by going to a jury trial as opposed to a reaching a settlement, they will try to negotiate a settlement. Remember, the lawyers for the Cole and family will also need to be compensated for their immense amount of time in pre-trial work. This could significantly impact the actual settlement amount.
Get a picce of 3/16 inch square tubing and weld on a half inch drive socket .. Then get a milwaukee battery operated high torque gun to open and close the hopper bottoms .. It works great ..
You got totally screwed! Should have gone with the contractor that did Mann farms.
Concerning your pit auger. What is the pitch of of the flighting?Could it be pulling more grain than the motor/belts are rated for. Try a smaller flywheel at the end to see what happens.
When I saw them pouring the concrete I knew you was in trouble it should have stopped then before any bin was installed no core testing
It’s about the shoe on table while you’re eating for me. 😂
Ol Smokey seems fitting Daddy CornStar
I suggest POD(Pit Of Despair) for your pit. A somewhat positive term for a negative situation.
The "Pits of Despair"
Your situation reminds me of an article I read in magazine about a farmer who bought a brand new case threshing machine he brought it home. It didn’t work properly so he went back to the dealer he bought from they came out and they couldn’t figure out the problem so they wired Ji case personally he came out to the field couldn’t get it to separate the grain so he set fire to it had a brand new direct delivery 🚚 to the farm the title of the story was when a warranty is a warranty sorry for your troubles on your new bin that’s half done or has been good luck and be careful around wrong way ohh ps glad to here your soy beans ran exspecially well happy harvest and be safe good luck 🍀 to you corn stars
Sounds like JI Case didn't want his name(and thus... reputation) tarnished by a failed piece of equipment sitting in a field for "all the world" to see...so he fixed that problem...with a match! Wonder if any nearby crops got "toasted" in the process? Once was a time when a name...emblazoned on a piece of equipment or building...showed pride in ownership/connection...but we seem to be in times now where the past is prologue?!
I know you were trying to get the floor covered before kicking the fandom but it’s not a good idea. I can’t tell you how many floors ive had to pull because of that. Did you take bids on the job before picking someone. I was brought in to inspect a new bin build earlier this year because of some build issues. You get what you pay for.
The pit of despair.
