    Wow. This is the most comprehensive and useful video about VR180 I've seen. It includes dozens of tips in one place that are otherwise strewn across the Internet and UA-cam. Forget anything else, this is the very first video anyone new to VR180 should view (with a headset). Well done!

    I have been shooting 3D film since the 1960s. I have slowly been digitizing the 3D film to SbyS and Anaglyph. Several years ago I bought a headset from Amazon and discovered that it couldn't recognize .MPO and the other formats that I had saved to. The screen resolution was also rather poor. A companion video to this video might be a review of the various headsets and what needs to be done to get them to display 3D content.

    Sometimes I see some blurriness in the video. Is that because of UA-cam or the video is like that? It would be great if you could upload a video for download to see the actual image quality.

    You're too close to the camera.
    Most modern stereoscopes project one pair of images on one sphere of about 3 meters in diameter,
    you come closer than one meter - my eyes hurt, go farther than two and I may as well watch it on a flat screen.
    You on the pier 3:15 and beside your Mac 4:45 - these are the good scenes.
    I think a good measure is your own arm. Stay two arms away if you gesticulate, one - if you just talk.

    Hi Ben, at 5:38 you mention using Final Cut. I have Final Cut Pro (which is what I assumed you meant) but am now finding that it can't edit 3D. All I want to do is to be able to piece clips together and maybe overlay a soundtrack, but I don't want to have to purchase another expensive editing program when I already recently spent a lot on Final Cut Pro. If there is a way to actually edit 3D with Final Cut Pro, could you show (or tell) us how? .. I already also tried running my footage through the VR180 Creator to get the metadata, but still when I upload to youtube from Final Cut Pro it just shows 2 side-by-side clips. Thanks!

      Hey- so UA-cam takes time (a few hours) to convert the side by side to 3D VR180. Its better to leave you video unlisted and come back a few hours later for it to process it. Annoying I know! But the editing process is the exact same with FCPX and Premiere.

    Great video! I enjoyed watching it in my Oculus! However you're confusing me a bit. After watching yout 3D camera comparison video you had me mostly sold on the Insta360 EVO, but here you are using the Vuze. Is the Vuze actually your 'go to' for 3D? Also does holoscreen for iphones work with any 3D video, or was that just a selling feature of the Insta360 EVO?

    • @andreasdk
      @andreasdk 5 років тому +1

      Also confused about this. In regards to holoframe for iPhone and Insta360 EVO...it's just a gimmick. I have it and it's...a pain to use and not half as good or impressive as watching content on the Oculus Go.

    • @BenClaremont
      @BenClaremont  5 років тому +1

      Thanks! In lieu of not making a Vuze XR review, I wanted to at least use it in a few videos to give it a fair go. The EVO is still my go to, and the holoframe is just for EVO right now (although there’s another generic one that works for all cameras). And no I wouldn’t call it a gimmick- it’s amazing and while yes Oculus Go is better, not everyone has one/can afford one which is why it’s a good budget option for viewing 3D 👍

    If you have an Apache or other web server setup on your PC/Mac/Linux you can access the files from the web browser in the Go and download them to the Go.. Its another way of getting files onto the Go, however getting them off is harder and seems that its not always easy especially on Linux. I have both MTP-TOOLS and ADB on Linux Mint, and it seems the trick is to connect via adb, but without mtp-tools linux won't see the device as a drive. The Deivce asked me once to determine if it trusts the PC, but it didn't this time although it seems to work as I found my content in the headset and am copying it over. I'm doing Minecraft VR and dumping video from the headset, I once tried to do the VR video capture trick using ADB but it comes out crappy so now all I do is dump the movie files from the headset even though they are not VR180, it would be nice to dump VR180 from the recorder if it supported it, but I guess that is too computationally intensive for the device. Note if Oculus wanted to they could use the OpenGL information to dump 3D information to a movie of such and let that be exported and even rerendered in a 3D application if the app developers would permit such access, it should be possible to access that information as it has to be in memory at some point and its what is eventually rendered to a buffer and exported as a movie. It would also let people re-render the content at a higher quality if they permitted it.
    I came up here to see how I could layer 2D content in 3D VR180 on blender 3D or other open source application, sadly it seems this is for bleeding edge implementations on established commercial platforms, I'll still look around someone has bound to have done it. However you can render to VR18 and VR360 in blender, I don't want to render anything cause it takes too long and am unsure how to bring VR180 video into a 3D environment and re-render it, that would offer some wild new complex layering of content I'm sure but still it is computationally intensive and wouldd take too long, compositing 4k content is a big enough waste of time. What I was planning to do was rendering he headsets video over the VR180 content from y headset so one could see the content in he headset and see the 3D content from my Lenovo Mirage Camera. I've seen it done in other VR content say like the Cirque De Soliel behind the scenes videos, but doesn't seem to be intuitive to do in anything without I guess plugins and those are on Adobe Premiere. Note, otherwise blender is pretty easy to edit video in and has a nice feature that fixes audio sync called "speed control" that permits you to increase the video length and adjust it to match the length of the audio according to the given frame rate, so regardless of your videos frame rate blender can adjust it to match the duration of anything in the given frame rate, even syncing the audio to video. Just by adjusting the clip length, super intuitive!! Animating the controls in blender is not intuitive but doable, everything in blender that has numeric controls or such can be keyframed and this means it can be animated so I can animate video transititions like a iris wipe creatively with keyframing and the output can be straight, ease-in-out or stupid like a random transition where it fluctuates between the A and B content which looks trippy. Just blender video editing is basic, but the output formats are mostly there: H.264, MJPEG, RAW AVI, MPEG, AAC, DV, etc.. It's a suite for animators and this means very fine control over the video down to the individual frames, and you can group content with Meta-Stripping, that just groups an entire edit into a strip that can be cut and layered at a higher level. The video playback of content is not accurate for 4K because the internal player of blender can't render that fast, but it dumps correctly when composited on export. You can also dump to image formats if you need to export to a platform that doesn't seem to like the video formats of blender. It's a great swiss army knife if you don't have access to premiere and say are in a environment that requires legal ownership (such as a government position) if you pirated your copy of premiere, blender is open source and free you'll always have access to it and can't be sued for anything it produces etc. EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW BLENDER you are choosing ignorance as its free and works, not knowing it leaves you disadvantaged, just like Mac and Windows users who can't use Linux, using Linux means you can backup your Mac and Windows partitions without running your operating system of choice.. Anybody who trusts the security of their operating system to anything, should know that I can access anything on your drive from within Linux as Linux can mount any drive partition cause it understands filesystems besides its own, so I can mount a NTFS partition in Linux and access all the files even make a clone of the drive or partitions in Linux. This is good if you want to backup everything precisely outside of Windows or Mac, this is bad if you think you have security from anyone who has access to your machine. Again claiming ignorance and prefering not to be aware of Linux leaves you at a severe disadvantage, like anyone who doesn't understand a car would be to a criminal mechanic with a electronics degree. However Linux is far easier than being a good hacker. Just lay audiences choose ignorance cause they think they can or maybe have such faith in God that thinking God will intervene when they are unable to have control over their space. God won't do everything for you when you can help yourself it is called growing and learning, do it.

    Nice vid once again! It’s so exciting to see that eventually stereoscopy might make it to mainstream! You can certainly make a great contribution to that aim. I still have a question: You had reviewed the quoocam a year ago or so... Through you also went into it’s 3D features you didn’t make a great deal out of 3D. Was it because it was in the Pre-Oculus-Go era? I. e. without a proper device it’s kinda useless? What do you think of autostereoscopic stuff, tried the „Hololens“ (which is just a Snap 3D rebranded) yet? This might also help in getting more people into 3D though it’s not as immersive...
    Keep it up;
    Fist Bump 👊
    PS: Don’t forget to link your vid in the respective FB groups, as you‘re more the „360 guy“ (no pun intended) not everyone of the stereo-types will have you subscribed yet 😉

    Two years ago, I purchased an Insta360 EVO based on your review. I remain very pleased with the purchase and the use of the Insta360 Studio. In fact, two years later I’m disappointed that Insta360 is no longer manufacturing this camera. I’m wanting to purchase one or two more EVOs as backup cameras in case something happens to my existing EVO.
    As of December 2021, I’m unable to find any remaining new EVOs in stock in the U.S.
    If you are aware of other options to purchase (new only), I would appreciate a link. If I can’t find any, I may proceed with the purchase of the Vuze XR 3D VR180. This is still available in the U.S. on Amazon and at B.H. Photo Video.

    A 360 camera requires double the amount of resolution. So, even if you have a 4K 360 camera, the quality will not be too good. A 4K 180 camera is much better than a 4K 360 camera.

    I hate to be critical but you really missed out on one of the biggest frustrations that I feel a lot of people are dealing with. That starts with what to do immediately after shooting a video. It seems like you just view the content by downloading from the SD card onto your phone app, which is a really strange workflow to begin with. With the mobile editing you say can’t be done in 5K which it’s seems is true. The problem is that if you have to start on the application from your phone and render out a video that you can import into Premier or some other program, my issue is that 5K video is only rendering out in 1080 P. I tried to download the studio app from human eyes’ website and it will not open on the MacBook for some reason. Everything is up-to-date on my MacBook but it keeps saying that the developer needs to update the app. So that rules out would logically be the most convenient way to edit and render these videos in actual 5K. I really wish that you would have gone through the process here from stopping the record button to exporting, before entering a third-party editing software like premiere. Also it would be really helpful if this video was not in 3-D or VR because most of us are not using the oculus to watch how to videos about our new camera we just bought. This has been pretty frustrating so far and I would really like to finally understand how to get videos to play on my oculus that are at least 4K since the oculus has that resolution. I have gotten videos to play on my oculus but they are horrible resolution and everything looks compressed meaning that a 6 foot tall person looks 4 feet in the actual video in 3-D on the oculus quest two. And this is with shooting the 180 3d in 5.7k on the camera.

I know the Vuze XR and Insta360 EVO both support this. It's not as nice as the proper goggles like the Oculus GO, but it's a good way to spot check quickly on the go. It's also a convenient way to show someone how the 3d looks while you're out and about.

    What height is ‘enough’ for shooting VR180? Most selfie sticks/monopods with tripod bases are 120-150cm which seems small if you want to be at eye level with your subject

    It seems it's not possible to edit 3D in FCP. So I'm working with 360 now. With the Evo, when exporting from Insta360 Studio, prior to importing into Final Cut Pro, what resolution should we specify? and what bitrate (mbsp)? ..Hoping for high quality resolution but also something that also works well with youtube. Thanks!

      I’m not too familiar with FCP but you should definitely be able to. Can you make a 5.7k timeline with FCP? If so export and import with that resolution, 70mbs is more than enough.

When every word is being said so fast, there is no time in my brain to process what you are saying. And this leads to rewatching your video over and over again to be able to capture what you are explaining to us. While I don't have that much time and I am having a boyfriend getting jealous because he sees me watching your movies all the time. ;) no hard feelings. And once again thanks for your support.

    Beside of carefully moving while recording vr for no motion sickness , you have also to convert the video file to be run on oculus very smooth so for no shaking on playback , we still at early ages , we need more powerful process headset or more efficient file formats or coding with better compression and faster conversion process however UA-cam format is running good on oculus but if you like to make one for memory it might be tricky or take long time to get high quality and consume much memory

    I have the Lenovo and the EVO, I got the EVO after having bought two more lenovos and neither would connect via bluetooth.. The EVO is worthless as it is so "Wintel" that the developers of the camera seem to have outsourced development to wizards or east indians who tend to withold sources from their clients to leverage them into paying for changeorders its what leads to east indians getting work visas into America as the companies here have no recourse when their investment is too great into outsourced solutions that not having access to the source puts them in dependence of a external entity, it is a conflict of interest. When any organization chooses anything proprietary and separate from the mainstream open solutions, they are leaving consumers with something that may one day show up on a electronics heap in goodwill that someone may find as a useful doorstop, may melt down to its material components or extracted to make other hardware, this is not the same as reuse or is not very good recycling, if you value your own money you would let people put value into it by permitting trade and reuse that increases the value of stuff and makes it collectable and dependable, even if your company becomes defunct you can die knowing you brought the world value, as the rich man will die knowing his relatives and friends will divide the spoils and piss on his grave especially if he was uncaring and in it for himself.
