"Minivan Camper Using Hand Warmers for Heat in -23 Degrees Weather"
While experiencing these Van life, Stealth Camp adventures I’m always looking for ways to stay warm during these very cold Canadian winter nights. I’ve tried just a -9º Sleeping bag, a Mr Heater and even an electric blanket. I saw Mav using Hand Warmers in one of his videos so I thought I’d give it a try during the coldest winter night I’ve ever experienced.
We’ll also be supporting a local mom and pop shop for a hearty breakfast before we venture out on an 8kms Hike in this beautiful Canadian wilderness. After the hike we get to treat ourselves at another local mom & pop shop in Craighurst for an awesome New York steak dinner.

IMO, If you order steak from a restaurant always order it 1 category less than you want it as it will continue to cook for a little afterwards. I like mine Medium rare, so I always order rare.

Sunlight also drains any saturation of red in meat. That's why steakhouses traditionally don't have windows. There's probably still a little bit of pink in the center. Looks like medium well.

Always carry a whistle when you are hiking especially when you are alone. It may save your life. This also goes for water activities as well. PSA from a retired Coastie.

Definitely would be easier to have something in the van. You could easily hook up a travel kettle to the jackery. Have a travel percalator for something decent and not instant. No need to take milk if he has it black. I've also seen coffee bags which are basically tea bags that contain proper ground coffee.

I was enjoying my Stake dinner and crispy onions here in Newfoundland when you posted this video.👍..Awesome timing...So I have a SHOPPRO Professional Ceramic Heater Model #ptc-700...it kicks in and out as the heat is needed.safty switch on the bottom if it tips over....Works great when I am over night camping in my truck..Check them out it will Definitely keep you warm in the night and way Safer than a Propain heater you have...Wishing you all the best on all your over night camping trips.👍👊
Good job cutting back on the cream and sugar. I started to drink black coffee a few years ago and it made me appreciate coffee (and good quality creamers) so much more.

grab a coffee at night to go bed early how does that work?
It was so cold, my delivery truck wouldn't start. I have to pull double duty because my driver quit, so I managed to deliver my food (after cooking it all) to the servery for distribution. Half that food has to be reloaded back onto the truck to be delivered to another part of the campus. Got it loaded up and lo and behold, it wouldn't start. I ended up delivering hot food in warmer bags, 4 at a time on carts making over a dozen trips, in the -19C weather. I normally do around 10k steps by the time I'm done the delivery, I finished off at 15k steps that day.
How did I mange to stay warm? Well I still had stairs to contend with at the delivery site.
Get a rechargeable electric heated hoodie/ socks and gloves.

I can’t imagine living somewhere where it’s that cold. I live in Texas and we rarely ever get snow or really cold temperatures. It was 70 degrees Fahrenheit yesterday.
I've been living in my car since 2016 in michigan. A few blankets is all you need. The vehicle stays warmer. I feel texas would get too warm in the summer.
This isn’t that cold, where he lives it doesn’t get as cold as more northern places

Should I tell you we've been at 6°C to 8°C all week in BC. 😇 Your dinner looked phenomenal! Love steak, but I eat it rare these days. Yours looks like it was medium well or well done. The hand warmers are really good idea! Glad you survived the night!
Brown sugar and regular milk on my oatmeal is still my only way of having oatmeal for breakfast. I usually make a moat of milk around an oatmeal island in the middle of the bowl. The only other way I have oatmeal is in cookies or crisp/crumble topping.
I think I mentioned it on a previous video, but I’ve heard quite a few people complain that GoPros have gone downhill the past few years.

Hey Ken you should try the body warmers that have adhesive on them and you can stick them on to your clothing and it’ll keep it from moving around. That would be better for camping and trying to keep warm at night.
I gotta say the ghost towns around certain parts of Canada are simply beautiful and the scenery is just awe jaw dropping awesome.

i know this video is 11 months old , but my advice stands today.. i drive truck , it has a lot of glass and steel that absorbs the cold, at - 20 or colder like - 40 or -50 ... it's impossible to heat up even with my bunk heater, so i have no choice but to run the truck for heat , little heaters help till you get out of bed and notice it's still cold... so Ken , don't be scared of idling the van.. -20 up is no joke .. keep safe, and keep eating .. ;0)

Ken a medium steak isnt completely grey, you are correct. Thats further than medium well. I dont do this stuff often but i would've taken that back for a new one. Steak is steak though

My family has covid , My fiancé caught it and needs some prayers , we are both vaccinated , we were tested on 1/20/22, my test was rapid and it was negative, my fiancé was positive , keep us in your thoughts Ken.

You make some pretty interesting videos Ken. I just got wind of your channel so we are doing some binge watching to catch up to your most recent videos. Todays was a cool one for sure, downright cold but you made it through. Ken, one thing I am wondering...you said. time to put on some freezing boots....why didn't you throw a couple of those hand or foot warmers into your boots and stay snuggled up in the sleeping bad until they warmed those boots up? Y'all should take a trip over to Oak Island in the Springtime... I would imagine Nova Scotia has plenty of places to hike & what not... I have to admit Ken I have seen more than enough snow(or as I have called it most of my life "White Dung") also the cold temps & winds. Anyways I enjoy porridge with brown sugar or blueberries but not both. That steak dinner & hot chocolate looked good(betcha it tasted good, I like my steak medium to medium rare myself & I find if it isn't pink than its not a good one. I will admit you didn't do something I see as a must. I need something sweet like a piece of cake or pie or even a cookie to get the grease out of my mouth. (I take after my father for sure)
honestly the only time i wanna see Oatmeal is when it's made into Cookies, not a farm of that mush that you gotta throw in a bunch of stuff in order to taste good, just sounds counterproductive to me.

So great to know about those hand warmers. Glad you are safe & sound & warm. I saw a sad video yesterday on here about the 4 ppl (3 adults & an infant) who didn't survive the cold after crossing the border into Manitoba. They were not prepared for the harsh winter elements. There is a youtube channel called the outdoor boys you should check out his channel he tells you what kind of bags he uses to keep warm and the sleeping bag he uses would be great for the temperature you were in. he does a lot of videos with him and his 3 boys.

Hi Ken, like your videos. I’m in south Jersey, tonight we’re looking at 18 F and that’s too cold to go out of the house. I don’t even understand -23C/ -9F. I saw my first Tim Horton cafe and bakery down here. It’s new, thinking about visiting it next weekend.

The steak was definitely well done. But maybe because you asked for it medium it was just about well done. So was still nice. I don't mind steaks like that.
Hand warmers go in 20 to 30 mins before you climb in… so you are climbing into a warm bag.
